Water droplets trailed continuously down her waist.
Gu Lanqiu didn’t answer immediately. She stared fixedly into Jiang Mengyu’s reddened eyes, only speaking softly after a long pause, “Fu Lianxi is just my college roommate.”
That’s all there was to it.
“Is that so?” Jiang Mengyu traced the corner of Gu Lanqiu’s lips with her fingertip, a cold glint flashing briefly in her eyes. “Are you sure she feels the same way?”
Gu Lanqiu couldn’t hear Jiang Mengyu’s inner thoughts, but she detected the mockery and jealousy in her tone.
It wasn’t that Gu Lanqiu didn’t know Jiang Mengyu had an overwhelming possessiveness toward her. The way she looked at her was always dark and obsessive, the desire and affection in those eyes never concealed.
Jiang Mengyu was deeply bothered by Fu Lianxi’s presence.
Gu Lanqiu remained motionless, gazing deeply into Jiang Mengyu’s eyes. “You don’t like her.”
“Is it because I had dinner with her tonight, or because of things she did in the past?”
She effortlessly tossed the question back to Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu’s finger paused. “Is there a difference?”
Gu Lanqiu curled her lips slightly. “Of course there is.”
Tonight, she had merely shared a meal with Fu Lianxi and spent some time at a bar. Others had been present the entire time, and Fu Lianxi hadn’t even said a single unnecessary word.
Was that really enough to upset Jiang Mengyu?
Narrowing her eyes, Gu Lanqiu’s expression remained indifferent. “I remember telling you before.”
“Don’t project your feelings about others onto me.”
What dissatisfied Jiang Mengyu was the version of her from a past life, not the present one.
“Fu Lianxi has never said she loves me, and I certainly haven’t agreed to accept her.”
As she spoke, Gu Lanqiu tilted her head away, avoiding Jiang Mengyu’s touch. “Save your resentment.”
Jiang Mengyu’s breathing faltered for a moment, her ink-dark eyes seemingly clouded with suppressed emotion. “Are you blaming me?”
“I’m just reminding you.”
Leaving aside the fact that her relationship with Fu Lianxi was entirely innocent, even if there had been something between them, it wasn’t Jiang Mengyu’s place to criticize her.
“You seem to have forgotten.” Gu Lanqiu closed her eyes briefly. “I haven’t agreed to your pursuit yet.”
She knew her own emotions weren’t entirely steady either, but hearing Jiang Mengyu’s accusatory tone, Gu Lanqiu couldn’t help but say something hurtful.
Jiang Mengyu wasn’t truly upset about tonight’s events.
When she looked at her, who was she really thinking of?
The question lingered on the tip of her tongue before Gu Lanqiu swallowed it back.
“Lanqiu.” Jiang Mengyu seemed oblivious to Gu Lanqiu’s thoughts, her voice slightly hoarse. “You promised me you’d let me pick you up at ten.”
Yet, in the end, Gu Lanqiu had broken that promise.
Because she had gone to accompany another woman.
“I’ve already explained it to you.”
From start to finish, Gu Lanqiu never believed Jiang Mengyu was angry about this matter.
“Running into Fu Lianxi was just a coincidence.”
They hadn’t seen each other in years, and Fu Lianxi had extended the invitation herself, how could Gu Lanqiu have refused?
Besides, Fu Lianxi was only here on a business trip and might leave in a couple of days, whereas Jiang Mengyu was staying at Beiyuan indefinitely, with plenty of opportunities to pick her up after work.
Gu Lanqiu didn’t see any issue with how she had handled things.
For a fleeting moment, the image of Jiang Mengyu’s expectant gaze before she left in the afternoon flashed through her mind, but Gu Lanqiu quickly suppressed it.
“Are you really going to fight with me over this?” she murmured.
Earlier at the bar, she had tacitly allowed Jiang Mengyu to assert her dominance, and when Jiang Mengyu clashed with Fu Lianxi, Gu Lanqiu had unhesitatingly taken Jiang Mengyu’s side. She believed she had already done more than enough.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t respond. Her eyes remained fixed on Gu Lanqiu, the flush that had risen to her alluring face from their kiss slowly fading.
Gu Lanqiu flexed her fingers slightly. Jiang Mengyu’s hand still lingered on her cheek, and she could still recall the way Jiang Mengyu had forcefully hooked an arm around her neck to kiss her. Yet, looking at Jiang Mengyu now lips pressed tightly together, stubborn and silent, Gu Lanqiu felt as though she were staring at a drenched puppy.
A peculiar sensation welled up in her chest. Gu Lanqiu knew that just a single soft word from her might dissolve the invisible tension between them.
But she remained silent.
After what felt like an eternity, she finally heard Jiang Mengyu speak in a hoarse voice, “I don’t want to fight with you.”
“Lanqiu, I’m just scared.”
Jiang Mengyu’s unwavering gaze bore into Gu Lanqiu’s eyes, her voice mingling with the night wind seeping through the car window. To Gu Lanqiu’s ears, it carried an inexplicable, eerie chill.
“She shares memories with you that belong only to the two of you.”
“She’s witnessed your entire journey from youth to maturity.”
Twelve whole years.
Jiang Mengyu paused. “But I know nothing about your past together.”
“Lanqiu, how can you expect me not to care?”
[Lanqiu has no idea.]
[How jealous I am…]
Jealous?
Gu Lanqiu thought, how could Jiang Mengyu believe she didn’t understand what that felt like?
When Gu Lanqiu didn’t respond, Jiang Mengyu’s breathing grew heavier. She lowered her eyes, her gaze drifting down to Gu Lanqiu’s lips, her voice barely audible. “Lanqiu, I want to lock you away. Somewhere only I can reach you. So we can be together forever.”
Gu Lanqiu’s heart lurched at those words. They sounded familiar Jiang Mengyu had said something similar before, though back then, she had asked Gu Lanqiu to tie her up instead.
Gu Lanqiu couldn’t tell whether Jiang Mengyu was joking or truly meant it, but her instincts told her Jiang Mengyu was capable of doing exactly that.
So, what about her past self?
Had she really been unwilling?
The thought made her doubt Jiang Mengyu’s claim that Xu Zeyan had imprisoned them in their past life. Truthfully, she had never fully believed Jiang Mengyu’s words to begin with, but now, her skepticism grew even stronger.
Jiang Mengyu’s crimson eyes darkened as she watched Gu Lanqiu’s silence. Her posture was unyielding, yet her tone was pleading. “Lanqiu, don’t look at her.”
“Just look at me, okay?”
The hand cupping Gu Lanqiu’s cheek moved as if confirming something, stroking her face repeatedly. Gu Lanqiu felt immobilized, as though entirely trapped within Jiang Mengyu’s grasp.
Her body was saturated with Jiang Mengyu’s scent, the fragrance of jasmine permeating every inch, as if thoroughly marking Gu Lanqiu.
Jiang Mengyu’s emotions showed faint signs of losing control. Gu Lanqiu gazed at the shimmering tears in her eyes and thought of how she had clutched her chest earlier, her face twisted in discomfort. In the end, she couldn’t bring herself to say anything crueler.
“I don’t like Fu Lianxi.”
If she had any real feelings for Fu Lianxi, would Jiang Mengyu even have the chance to assert her dominance here?
When Gu Lanqiu first met Fu Lianxi, Jiang Mengyu was still in middle school.
At this thought, Gu Lanqiu’s expression turned slightly complicated.
She knew there was a ten-year age gap between her and Jiang Mengyu.
But until now, Gu Lanqiu had never given it much thought. Besides, Jiang Mengyu’s usual demeanor showed no trace of childishness, so Gu Lanqiu had naturally overlooked it.
Now, upon closer reflection, when she was in university, Jiang Mengyu had just started seventh grade still a clueless little kid.
Only then did it truly sink in for Gu Lanqiu.
“Really?” Jiang Mengyu brushed her lips lightly against Gu Lanqiu’s, her hand resting on Gu Lanqiu’s cheek sliding down to grasp her fingers and press them against her own chest.
“Lanqiu, can you hear it?”
The heartbeat beneath her palm was strong and rapid. In a daze, Gu Lanqiu even felt her fingertips tremble from the force of it.
Jiang Mengyu’s voice was soft but firm. “It’s only beating this fast because it’s you in front of me.”
“Everything about me belongs to you.”
Her slightly husky tone carried an invisible allure.
“In exchange, you belong only to me too, okay?”
Gu Lanqiu’s eyes darkened. Did she truly belong only to herself?
The car remained silent for a long moment before Jiang Mengyu finally heard Gu Lanqiu murmur, “I won’t like anyone else.”
Aside from Jiang Mengyu, no one else could evoke that same flutter in her heart.
“Then what about me?”
Jiang Mengyu stared straight at Gu Lanqiu. “What am I to you in your heart?”
That statement she’s not my lover had clearly left a mark on Jiang Mengyu.
Gu Lanqiu turned her face away without answering.
When Jiang Mengyu received no response, she pressed on, “Would you sleep with other suitors too?”
Gu Lanqiu’s breath hitched. “You!”
Before she could finish, Jiang Mengyu sealed her lips with a kiss, cool lips pressing fiercely against Gu Lanqiu’s, deep and relentless.
Gu Lanqiu struggled slightly, only for her lower lip to be bitten sharply. A spark of anger flared in her chest.
This kiss was more intense than any before. By the time it ended, both their lips were unnaturally red, their breathing ragged.
“Lanqiu.” Jiang Mengyu traced the faint flush at the corner of Gu Lanqiu’s eyes, murmuring, “You’re mine.”
“No one else gets to come near you.”
Gu Lanqiu’s chest rose and fell rapidly. “Oh?”
“Before I agree to your pursuit, you have no right to dictate who I associate with.”
So Jiang Mengyu would just have to try harder, to work harder at pleasing her as she was now.
Gu Lanqiu licked her tingling lips. “She never smoked in front of you?”
“Mm.” Jiang Mengyu lowered her lashes slightly. “No.”
Good.
If she wanted Jiang Mengyu to realize that she wasn’t the same person as in her past life, she had to make her see clearly, they had different habits and preferences.
Gu Lanqiu steadied her breathing. “Next time you light a cigarette for me, you don’t have to stand so close.”
“Has anyone else done this for you before?” Jiang Mengyu immediately pressed.
“No,” Gu Lanqiu replied. “Only you.”
Finally satisfied, Jiang Mengyu lightly pecked the corner of Gu Lanqiu’s lips. “I’ll remember that.”
Gu Lanqiu exhaled softly and turned to look out the car window. “We’re here.”
The tension between them momentarily subsided, but the lingering atmosphere of unresolved tension and subtle intimacy remained thick in the air.
Gu Lanqiu withdrew her hand, gently pushed Jiang Mengyu away, and was the first to open the car door. “Let’s go.”
Jiang Mengyu followed silently behind her.
Gu Lanqiu had half-expected Jiang Mengyu to do something more perhaps take her hand, as she had in the bar. But the woman simply walked quietly behind her, her gaze fixed on Gu Lanqiu, making no other move.
A faint, fleeting unease passed through Gu Lanqiu’s heart.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t miss that subtle reaction.
The cool night breeze lifted Jiang Mengyu’s long hair, and for a moment, a different emotion seemed to flicker across her face. But before Gu Lanqiu could turn to notice, it had already vanished into calm.
