When her hair was half-dry, she turned off the hairdryer and glanced sideways, only to find Lanqiu standing at the doorway, arms crossed, watching her silently. It was unclear how long she had been there.
Mengyu was wearing the pajamas Lanqiu had bought for her, using Lanqiu’s shower gel and shampoo. She stood where Lanqiu usually washed her face, as if completely enveloped by Lanqiu’s scent.
Jiang Mengyu was the kind of person who dared to stab herself with a knife, yet in moments like this, she seemed so fragile and soft that one hand could easily subdue her.
Lanqiu studied the woman before her Mengyu’s long hair still damp, her dark, clear eyes free of any impurities, her lips pressed together in a thin line. The delicate curve of her neck and collarbone resembled fine porcelain, smooth and beautiful.
When she wasn’t in one of her frenzied states, that refined, noble air about her was indeed quite deceptive.
Maybe being with Jiang Mengyu wasn’t so bad.
So far, Lanqiu had yet to meet anyone who stirred her heart more than Mengyu did.
Lost in thought, she suddenly noticed Mengyu turning and walking toward her.
“Lanqiu,” Mengyu said, the scent of jasmine clinging to her as she approached. “What are you looking at?”
“You,” Lanqiu answered honestly.
Her gaze lingered on Mengyu’s deep, dark eyes, they reminded her of the precious gemstones she collected, dazzling and beautiful, shimmering under the light with an extraordinary glow.
Mengyu stepped even closer. “Do I look good?”
Lanqiu replied, “Mm.”
The corners of Mengyu’s lips seemed to curl slightly. “I’ll wait for you outside.”
She had said those words before, but this time, Lanqiu sensed a different meaning behind them.
She met Mengyu’s gaze deeply. “Alright.”
By the time Lanqiu finished her shower and stepped out, Mengyu was sitting with her back to her by the floor-to-ceiling window. As Lanqiu approached, she saw a book in Mengyu’s hands.
Jiang Mengyu seemed to really enjoy reading this.
Gu Lanqiu focused her gaze and followed where Jiang Mengyu’s fingertip rested on the page. There, in stark black and white, were a few lines of text:
“The moon is sweet.”
“It is bright, and warm.”
Jiang Mengyu’s head was slightly lowered, and the moonlight from outside the window spilled in, bathing her in its glow. In that moment, she truly seemed to merge with the moonlight itself.
Gu Lanqiu thought to herself that those words weren’t entirely wrong.
Perhaps sensing the movement, Jiang Mengyu lifted her hand and naturally closed the book in her grasp. “You’re done washing up.”
“Mm.”
Jiang Mengyu stood up, and the distance between them abruptly narrowed. The moment their eyes met, an invisible undercurrent seemed to surge around them, flowing and pulsing with each breath they took.
Under the cool moonlight, Gu Lanqiu watched as Jiang Mengyu reached out toward her and she didn’t refuse.
Their figures melded into one, their breaths hot against each other. The touch of their hands was scorching, sending shivers through their bodies, yet they remained inseparable.
Gu Lanqiu truly felt drunk.
All her attention was consumed by Jiang Mengyu. As she felt the other woman’s kisses trailing down her body, her legs lifted instinctively, and the hand gripping the back of Jiang Mengyu’s head clenched so tightly that the veins on the back of it stood out starkly.
She wasn’t sure if the air conditioning was on in the room Gu Lanqiu only felt unbearably hot. Sweat-dampened strands of hair clung to her cheeks, her eyes half-lidded, her slender waist taut with tension.
Her legs were covered in red marks, some even bearing the faint imprint of teeth.
Gu Lanqiu no longer had the capacity to think of anything else.
She wouldn’t know that the story she had just read wasn’t actually finished. If she turned the page, she would find a few more lines:
“The moon is actually cold.”
“What you see?”
“Is only the moon of your imagination.”
Yet the embrace around her was so real, the warmth of another person unmistakably tangible. Gu Lanqiu tightened her arms around Jiang Mengyu’s neck, listening as the other woman murmured softly in her ear.
“Lanqiu, Lanqiu…”
“Wife.”
That last word was whispered so faintly, like the buzz of a mosquito, but Gu Lanqiu still caught it.
Her drifting consciousness snapped back abruptly. She drew in a deep breath. “Don’t call me that.”
Jiang Mengyu lifted her head to look at Gu Lanqiu’s flushed face. A sheen of sweat had formed on her own skin, and on her shoulder was the mark of Gu Lanqiu’s bite. “You don’t like it?”
Gu Lanqiu averted her gaze. “No.”
That term was too grating because Gu Lanqiu knew Jiang Mengyu wasn’t really calling her.
Jiang Mengyu fell silent for a few seconds. Her fingertips brushed the corner of Gu Lanqiu’s eye, wiping away a tear that had unconsciously escaped. “Then what would you like me to call you?”
Gu Lanqiu didn’t know.
She just didn’t want their relationship to carry the shadow of her past self.
“What did you call her before?”
Gu Lanqiu didn’t specify who “her” was, but they both understood.
“Haven’t you already figured it out?” Jiang Mengyu looked down at her, her expression unreadable.
Gu Lanqiu pressed her lips together, silent. Her gaze lingered on Jiang Mengyu’s features, and suddenly, struck by the thought that the other woman was ten years younger than her, an idea flickered through her mind.
“You can call me jie.”
Jiang Mengyu’s eyes froze. She stared at Gu Lanqiu for a long, long moment, her emotions inscrutable.
Gu Lanqiu didn’t know what she was thinking. For a brief moment, she felt as though Jiang Mengyu was looking through her at someone else. But when she looked closer, Jiang Mengyu’s eyes were clear and undisturbed, without a ripple of emotion.
“Is it not, okay?” Gu Lanqiu asked.
Was the term “sister” also something special to Jiang Mengyu?
Gu Lanqiu thought back Jiang Mengyu only had one stepsister, and she had never mentioned knowing any other sisters. The title should be unique to her alone.
Jiang Mengyu’s voice was soft. “Do you know what you used to call me in your past life?”
Gu Lanqiu froze. She frowned at Jiang Mengyu. “What do you mean?”
Jiang Mengyu’s tone was indifferent. “Lanqiu, if you were to give me a nickname, what would you call me?”
Gu Lanqiu had a feeling this question was important to Jiang Mengyu.
Her mind was a tangled mess, but as she pondered, the image of Jiang Mengyu sitting under the moonlight reading suddenly surfaced in her thoughts.
Almost instinctively, Gu Lanqiu whispered:
“Jiaojiao?”
