“Her matters have nothing to do with me.”
The corridor was quiet, with sporadic insect chirps blending faintly with the distant mourning music, forming a peculiar melody.
Jiang Mengyu patted Chi Jingyan’s back. “The night wind is chilly. Let’s go back.”
Chi Jingyan hadn’t gotten the answer she wanted from her, leaving her heart increasingly hollow and confused, with a vague, barely perceptible panic lurking beneath.
But remembering that Jiang Mengyu had just promised not to fall for anyone else, Chi Jingyan forcibly suppressed the unease in her heart.
Perhaps Jiang Mengyu was waiting until after the college entrance exams to give her a definitive answer?
Chi Jingyan exhaled softly and glanced sideways at the Yunyue necklace hanging so close to her. Her heart eased slightly, and she asked Jiang Mengyu in a small voice, “What about the other gift I gave you?”
Jiang Mengyu pulled out the tiny glass bottle from her coat pocket and shook it in front of Chi Jingyan. “Right here.”
Finally, the corners of Chi Jingyan’s lips lifted ever so slightly.
These two items were like tokens of their love, because it was after she gave them to Jiang Mengyu that her attitude toward her began to change.
Seeing Jiang Mengyu carrying the gifts with her, Chi Jingyan could temporarily set her mind at ease.
She reached out and touched Jiang Mengyu’s fingertips, icy cold. Worry immediately surfaced on Chi Jingyan’s face.
“You shouldn’t stay out either. Go back and sleep.”
“Alright.”
As she spoke, Jiang Mengyu cast one last glance over her shoulder. The corner was empty, Chi Jia was long gone.
Chi Jingyan probably wouldn’t believe her words and would surely check the surveillance footage privately. But since Chi Jia had dared to set up an ambush in the old house, she had likely already taken care of that issue.
Chi Jingyan would never know what they had talked about.
Chi Jingyan walked Jiang Mengyu back to her room. Only after the door closed did she turn and head downstairs.
After just a few steps, her pace gradually slowed. She tilted her head slightly and whispered to Zhou Heng, who was following behind her, “Go check the surveillance footage from earlier.”
The bodyguard had called to report that Jiang Mengyu had confronted Chi Jia. Unfortunately, Jiang Mengyu hadn’t allowed him to get close, so he hadn’t heard their conversation. He’d only seen them make physical contact, though Jiang Mengyu hadn’t been at a disadvantage, she was the one who had grabbed Chi Jia by the throat.
Chi Jingyan’s brows were tightly furrowed, her beautiful, delicate face cold and stern.
On previous occasions when Chi Jia had run her mouth, even if Jiang Mengyu was furious, she’d only told her to get lost. What had Chi Jia said this time to provoke Jiang Mengyu into actually laying hands on her?
Jiang Mengyu’s refusal to tell her suggested that Chi Jia’s words had likely been about her. Chi Jingyan was worried Jiang Mengyu might actually believe Chi Jia’s nonsense.
Wasn’t Chi Jia approaching Jiang Mengyu just to arrange a meeting with her father?
Chi Jingyan returned to the mourning hall with a frosty expression. She went straight to her father and whispered a few words in his ear. He frowned, seemingly disapproving, but eventually nodded.
Finally, he gave her a deep look. “Jingyan, you’ve always had a mind of your own. I won’t say much.”
“Just remember, don’t go too far in anything. Always leave yourself a way out.”
Previously, when Chi Jingyan had impulsively kidnapped Jiang Mengyu, her father had said these words to her after finding out. Now, as he brought them up again, Chi Jingyan sensed a different implication in his tone.
Pursing her lips, she carefully studied her father’s expression, wondering if he had already discovered something.
Like how she had used Jiang Mengyu’s pheromones to scheme against Third Uncle…
In the end, Chi Jingyan nodded lightly. “I understand.”
From that day on, Jiang Mengyu hadn’t seen Chi Jia again. Chi Jingyan had mentioned in passing that Chi Jia had finally met with Third Uncle, though no one knew what they had discussed. Chi Jia had emerged looking rather pale.
Jiang Mengyu was massaging Chi Jingyan’s sore waist when she heard this. She remained silent, merely patting Chi Jingyan’s lower back calmly, signaling her to sit up.
Her hands moved downward, fingers encircling Chi Jingyan’s calves as she skillfully kneaded the tense muscles. Softly, she said, “Her affairs have nothing to do with me.”
Chi Jingyan rested her legs on Jiang Mengyu’s lap, leaning against the headboard as she watched the woman diligently tending to her. A faint smile tugged at her lips. “Then what do you care about most?”
Jiang Mengyu lifted her gaze slightly. “What do you think?”
Chi Jingyan raised her leg slightly, her toes pressing lightly against Jiang Mengyu’s thigh as she tested the waters. “You care about me the most, don’t you?”
She had finally learned to speak such bold, direct words of affection.
The sweet scent of rice wine pheromones had unknowingly filled the air, enveloping Jiang Mengyu in its soft embrace. Jiang Mengyu said nothing, her head slightly bowed, loose strands of hair revealing lingering kiss marks.
Chi Jingyan’s heart stirred. Leaning forward, she hooked a finger around Jiang Mengyu’s neck, pressing her lips against hers the moment the other woman looked up.
Their equally striking faces were now close. Jiang Mengyu’s eyes remained half-lidded, gazing straight into Chi Jingyan’s, who met her stare unflinchingly her eyes challenging, yet her lips tender.
Jiang Mengyu’s hand still rested on Chi Jingyan’s calf, but as their kiss deepened, those long, strong fingers trailed upward along her thigh, settling at her waist.
Chi Jingyan’s arms tightened unconsciously, shifting from clasping Jiang Mengyu’s nape to wrapping around her shoulders. The distance between them shrank until there was none left.
As the kiss grew more fervent, Chi Jingyan’s face flushed, her breaths ragged and warm, her entire body radiating an intoxicating fragrance.
Jiang Mengyu held her steadily, a faint blush coloring her otherwise expressionless face. Her eyes never closed, taking in every one of Chi Jingyan’s reactions with clarity.
Outside, a light rain had begun to fall unnoticed. A chilly breeze slipped through a crack in the window, rustling the curtains.
Chi Jingyan shivered.
The stray strands of hair stirred by the wind obscured Jiang Mengyu’s brows and eyes, leaving Chi Jingyan unable to read her expression. All she felt was the sudden tightening of the arm around her waist, pulling her securely into an embrace.
“So cold…” Chi Jingyan murmured.
Jiang Mengyu released her. “I’ll close the window.”
Before she could rise, Chi Jingyan entangled her once more. Jiang Mengyu felt as though she were ensnared by soft, pliant vines, unable to escape even an inch.
The person in her arms brushed her lips lightly against Jiang Mengyu’s earlobe, exhaling slow, scorching breaths. A husky voice drifted softly into her ear.
“Don’t go.”
“Hold me tight, and I won’t be cold anymore.”
The funeral of Old Master Chi proceeded without any mishaps.
Chi’s third uncle was still absent, but Chi Jia and his wife were present, both looking equally haggard and indifferent, barely speaking throughout the ceremony.
Jiang Mengyu accompanied the procession as well, only because Chi Jingyan was uneasy unless she kept Jiang Mengyu within her sight. Only then could Chi Jingyan relax slightly.
As the funeral concluded and the crowd gradually dispersed, Chi Jingyan prepared to take Jiang Mengyu back to the apartment. Her nerves had been taut for days, and now, at last, she could unwind for a moment.
Through the gaps of unfamiliar figures, Jiang Mengyu locked eyes with Chi Jia from a distance. There seemed to be an unspoken depth in the way Chi Jia looked at her.
Noticing Jiang Mengyu’s awareness of her gaze, Chi Jia curled her lips into a faint smile.
Her eyes then shifted to Chi Jingyan, a trace of mockery flickering in their depths.
A second later, Chi Jingyan’s gaze swept over. She barely acknowledged Chi Jia, sparing her only a glance before turning her attention back to Jiang Mengyu standing beside her.
“Someone recommended a really good hotpot place to me. Want to try it?”
Jiang Mengyu lowered her eyes, masking her thoughts. “Sure.”
In the past, their dates had always been at Western restaurants. Regardless of the taste, the ambiance had always been quiet and refined but Jiang Mengyu had never been particularly interested.
Perhaps Chi Jingyan had noticed her disinterest in such cuisine, because this time, she had done her research. She’d gotten a list of must-try restaurants in S City from Chu Muyao, which included a hotpot place.
After changing clothes, they left the old estate. Chi Jingyan’s parents, perhaps preferring to avoid the sight of them, had vanished after the funeral, their whereabouts unknown.
The driver parked the car by the roadside, leaving them a little over a hundred meters to walk to the hotpot restaurant. Rarely did Chi Jingyan get to stroll hand-in-hand with Jiang Mengyu like this. She tightened her grip on Jiang Mengyu’s hand, her smile unwavering.
Though it was a weekday, the streets were crowded. As they walked, Chi Jingyan couldn’t resist glancing at Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu was gazing intently at something. Following her line of sight, Chi Jingyan spotted a dessert shop.
“You want some?”
Chi Jingyan moved to step inside, but Jiang Mengyu tugged her back, idly squeezing her fingertips. “Not right now.”
So maybe later?
Chi Jingyan suddenly remembered the time she had cooked porridge for Jiang Mengyu, only to be told it was terrible.
An idea flashed through her mind.
“What if I signed up for a baking class?”
Jiang Mengyu looked at her questioningly.
Chi Jingyan pressed her lips together. “We could try making things at home.”
They didn’t share many hobbies, and Chi Jingyan couldn’t immediately think of anything that might pique Jiang Mengyu’s interest. The woman always seemed so composed and detached, as if nothing could stir her emotions.
Well not entirely, Chi Jingyan mused. At night, Jiang Mengyu had plenty of energy.
There was also a different sparkle in her eyes when she touched the gun.
But they couldn’t stay in bed forever, could they?
Or perhaps, aside from that silver pistol, she could give Jiang Mengyu something else?
But if she did, would Jiang Mengyu misunderstand her intentions, thinking she still only saw her as a bodyguard?
Chi Jingyan fell into a dilemma.
But soon, she didn’t have the luxury to dwell on it anymore because Jiang Mengyu rejected her suggestion.
“No need.”
Chi Jingyan didn’t understand. “Why?”
Jiang Mengyu lowered her gaze to the hand she held in her palm, well-proportioned, with slender fingers. Apart from the faint calluses on the base of her thumb and middle finger from holding guns and writing, the rest of her skin was smooth and soft.
Jiang Mengyu’s tone was indifferent. “Because this isn’t something you should be doing.”
The young lady’s meticulously cared-for hands were better suited for other things, not for deliberately doing something she disliked just to please someone.
Chi Jingyan seemed to understand, yet not quite. She slipped her fingers back between Jiang Mengyu’s and asked softly, “Then what should I do?”
Jiang Mengyu’s lips moved slightly, as if uttering two very quiet words. Unfortunately, the surroundings were too noisy, and Chi Jingyan couldn’t make them out.
She pressed again, “What?”
But Jiang Mengyu didn’t speak again.
She led Chi Jingyan toward the hotpot restaurant, leaving Chi Jingyan to replay in her mind what Jiang Mengyu had just said.
Judging by her lips, it seemed like she had said, love me?
Chi Jingyan wasn’t sure.
No matter how much she asked afterward, Jiang Mengyu refused to say it again.
After dinner, the two took a walk before returning to the apartment to rest.
Since moving back in, the door to the guest bedroom had remained closed. Jiang Mengyu had been sleeping in the master bedroom with Chi Jingyan.
The young lady was well-behaved in her sleep, except that she had to hold onto Jiang Mengyu constantly. Even a second of separation would startle Chi Jingyan awake.
Rain began to fall again in the night. Chi Jingyan woke groggily to find Jiang Mengyu still awake.
