As she spoke, Chi Jia’s eyes trailed from Jiang Mengyu’s brows down to the Yun-Yue necklace around her neck. “Cloud and moon, huh…”
“What does Chi Jingyan call you? Jiaojiao?”
Chi Jia’s eyes brimmed with mockery as she looked Jiang Mengyu up and down like a pitiful worm. “You don’t resemble her in looks, but your aura is like a carbon copy.”
“Jiang Mengyu, can you tell the difference? When Chi Jingyan calls you ‘Jiaojiao,’ is she calling out to you, this moon or the other moon far beyond reach?”
Chi Jia probably thought “Jiaojiao” was a pet name Chi Jingyan had given Jiang Mengyu.
That was why she was provoking Jiang Mengyu like this.
System No. 031 was stunned, there was actually someone in this world who could spin tales even more shamelessly than its host. Judging by Chi Jia’s expression when she mentioned “Jia Yue,” she didn’t even blush or falter. If it hadn’t read the original novel, it might have believed her.
Jiang Mengyu remained unfazed. “Why should I believe you?”
Chi Jia glanced at the bodyguards not far away. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, and her face, half-hidden in the darkness, looked like a vengeful ghost. “Of course Chi Jingyan would keep it from you.”
“But I can’t bear to see you kept in the dark.”
“You wanted evidence, didn’t you? I’ll show you.”
After speaking, Chi Jia took two steps back. “The documents are in the study. Do you dare to come with me?”
Her gaze was full of provocation.
Chi Jia was certain Jiang Mengyu would take the bait. No one liked being someone else’s substitute, especially not a control-freak Alpha like Jiang Mengyu. How could she possibly accept it?
Jiang Mengyu stepped forward into the darkness.
Chi Jia was on the verge of smiling when, suddenly, her vision blurred. The aggressive scent of jasmine assaulted her senses, robbing her of strength in an instant.
Jiang Mengyu gripped the back of her neck and slammed her against the wall. Chi Jia was forced to press her entire body against the cold surface, her face nearly contorted from the impact.
She struggled violently, like a turtle flipped onto its shell. “Jiang Mengyu, have you lost your mind?!”
Chi Jia hadn’t expected Jiang Mengyu to attack her out of nowhere especially not in the family estate!
“Tell your people to stand down.” Ignoring Chi Jia’s furious roar, Jiang Mengyu spoke calmly into her ear.
Chi Jia froze. How did Jiang Mengyu know she had backup?
Of course Jiang Mengyu knew. The last time she had lured Chi Jingyan out, she had used the same trick.
Some vague so-called “evidence” was enough to make the protagonist, fully aware of the danger ahead, still leap headfirst into the trap.
It was a classic trope in stories.
Too bad, she wasn’t the protagonist. She was the villain, and villains didn’t fall for such tricks.
“Didn’t you want to talk? It’d be no fun if you called your people over.”
Jiang Mengyu’s grip was tight, nearly suffocating Chi Jia. Her heart pounded wildly, her face a mix of fury and shock. But for some reason, Chi Jia ultimately obeyed, signaling to the hidden figures to stand down.
“What do you want to say?” Chi Jia gasped, bracing her hands against the wall as she tried to break free.
Jiang Mengyu’s voice was low. “I’ve never heard of any ‘Jia Yue,’ but I once had a dear friend, much older than me. She was best at making mung bean cakes, I wonder if you’ve ever tasted them.”
Chi Jia was about to snap, what nonsense about red bean or mung bean cakes, why would she have eaten them? But just before the words left her mouth, realization struck.
Jiang Mengyu wouldn’t bring this up randomly. Did this so-called friend of hers have some connection to Chi Jingyan?
Come to think of it, she seemed to have a vague recollection.
Mung bean cakes…
Chi Jia was struggling to recall when Jiang Mengyu’s voice sounded in her ear again, “If I were you, I wouldn’t choose to act now.”
Chi Jia’s heart tightened. Jiang Mengyu actually knew what she was planning did that mean her entire performance just now had been nothing but a joke in the other’s eyes?
“What do you mean?” Chi Jia turned her head with difficulty, trying to catch a glimpse of Jiang Mengyu’s expression, but the hand gripping the back of her neck was like an iron clamp, rendering her completely immobile.
Jiang Mengyu said, “Old Master Chi is already dead. Who do you think this place belongs to now?”
Even if Chi Jia managed to tie her up, she probably wouldn’t get far before being discovered.
Chi Jia remained silent.
But what else could she do? The only plan she could think of was to use Jiang Mengyu to threaten Chi Jingyan, then have Chi Jingyan beg Chi’s father to release her own father.
With Chi’s third uncle gone, the company was already in chaos.
Her mother wasn’t cut out for business, and though Chi Jia had the will to turn things around, she was too young those old-timers simply wouldn’t listen to her.
Jiang Mengyu paused, her voice icy. “I promised Chi Jingyan that I’d decide whether to accept her confession after the college entrance exams.”
Chi Jia’s eyes widened. Jiang Mengyu was actually referring to Chi Jingyan in such a cold tone, had she been acting all this time?
Before Chi Jia could figure it out, Jiang Mengyu continued, “Haven’t you always wanted to cooperate with me?”
She finally released her grip, and Chi Jia immediately turned around, leaning against the wall as she gasped for breath.
When she focused her gaze, she realized Jiang Mengyu was now holding a black voice recorder in her hand. Chi Jia instinctively touched her pants pocket, it was empty.
Jiang Mengyu toyed with the recorder. “Consider this proof of our cooperation.”
“As a show of sincerity, I’ll persuade Chi Jingyan to let you see your father.”
No. 031 let out a sigh in Jiang Mengyu’s mind.
[Host, I take back what I said earlier. The person in this world best at spinning lies is still you.]
Some old friend who knew how to make mung bean cakes.
No. 031 had practically scoured the original novel before finally stumbling upon a tiny passage buried in some obscure corner.
Female Lead A took Female Lead O on a trip, where they passed by a street vendor selling mung bean cakes. Female Lead O wanted to try some, and while paying, Female Lead A casually mentioned that she once had a bodyguard who was great at making them. Unfortunately, during a kidnapping incident, the bodyguard had been fatally shot while protecting her.
That was it, just an insignificant little detail. Yet the host had remembered it and even used it to deceive Chi Jia.
No. 031 was at a loss for words.
But then it occurred to them that perhaps the host was worried Chi Jia might stir up trouble before the mission was complete, hence the excuse to placate her. With that thought, No. 031 felt a little better.
No wonder the host was wandering around in the middle of the night instead of sleeping maybe she had anticipated Chi Jia would try to make a move at the old house and deliberately came out to fish for her.
Come to think of it, was this some kind of villainous telepathy?
After all, the host had also once kidnapped Tang An right from his own stronghold.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t speak. After all, she was just a cannon-fodder character who exited the story right after her appearance. The author hadn’t bothered to spend much ink on her, even making her an orphan outright. Her interpersonal relationships were both simple and complicated, she’d met many people, yet didn’t have a single close friend.
So Jiang Mengyu wasn’t worried about being exposed.
Chi Jia should remain subdued for a while longer. As long as she could hold out until the mission was completed, everything would be fine.
Jiang Mengyu looked into the distance, where Chi Jingyan’s figure appeared before her. She was rushing over in a hurry, and as she drew closer, Jiang Mengyu simply stopped walking.
Chi Jingyan was still catching her breath. She stared intently at Jiang Mengyu, her lips pale. “I heard you ran into Chi Jia?”
“Yeah.”
Jiang Mengyu had deliberately wiped her fingers clean earlier, ensuring no trace of Chi Jia’s scent lingered on her.
Chi Jingyan’s expression darkened. “Chi Jia has been quiet for a while now. I thought she’d finally come to terms with the situation.”
“Did she bully you?”
Jiang Mengyu wasn’t sure what kind of image she had in Chi Jingyan’s mind, she always seemed worried that she’d be taken advantage of.
“No.”
Chi Jingyan curled her fingers slightly. “If she said anything to you, don’t believe her.”
Not a single word from Chi Jia’s mouth could be trusted.
Still uneasy, Chi Jingyan wanted to say more, but Jiang Mengyu suddenly wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “I know.”
Chi Jingyan froze, even feeling a little flustered by the unexpected gesture. Her doubts and worries were immediately pushed aside. Chi Jia could wait right now, Jiang Mengyu was more important.
“It’s so late. Why aren’t you asleep?” she asked softly.
Without changing her expression, Jiang Mengyu replied, “I couldn’t sleep without you in the room.”
Chi Jingyan’s heart instantly softened. Had Jiang Mengyu always been this dependent on her?
She comforted her, “It’ll be better after tomorrow night.”
Chi Jingyan missed Jiang Mengyu too. If she could, she wouldn’t have spent the night keeping vigil for the old man, she’d much rather have held Jiang Mengyu and slept together.
Chi Jingyan used to despise people who lost all rationality when they fell in love, but now she had become exactly that kind of person.
She just wanted to stick to Jiang Mengyu like glue.
The woman beside her leaned in for another embrace. Jiang Mengyu let Chi Jingyan wrap her arms around her waist, gently patting her back. “If you’re tired, rest for a bit.”
The gentle scent of jasmine enveloped Chi Jingyan, soothing her exhaustion and agitation.
Chi Jingyan tilted her head slightly, pressing her lips lightly against Jiang Mengyu’s neck in a soft kiss. “I wish time would pass faster.”
She wanted a proper identity, one that would allow her to openly bring Jiang Mengyu into her life.
“Do you like M Country?” Chi Jingyan murmured. “Or Y Country would work too.”
“Riding a Ferris wheel to see the Thames, kissing at the highest point, that must be wonderful.”
“I also want to go camping with you in snowy forests, to see the auroras.”
“We could travel to so many places together, take so many photos.”
As long as Jiang Mengyu was willing, Chi Jingyan wanted to share everything with her.
She tightened her embrace, drawing warmth from Jiang Mengyu’s body. The steady, strong rhythm of her heartbeat echoed faintly in Chi Jingyan’s ears.
Her eyelids drooped halfway. “As long as you’re willing, we can do anything. I’ll listen to you, okay?”
Chi Jingyan’s posture was so humble, carefully seeking Jiang Mengyu’s opinion, her breath against Jiang Mengyu’s ear soft and gentle.
Jiang Mengyu lowered her gaze to the person in her arms. Chi Jingyan had bared her vulnerable neck without hesitation, even the scent gland at the nape, completely exposed.
The once haughty young lady had finally learned to bow for love, willingly offering everything she had to please the one she adored.
Jiang Mengyu shielded Chi Jingyan from the biting cold wind, the loose strands of hair by her cheeks fluttering lightly in the breeze. To Chi Jingyan, this scene made it seem, for a fleeting moment, as though Jiang Mengyu had also turned into a gust of wind about to vanish from her side, no matter how desperately she tried to hold on, unable to make Jiang Mengyu stay.
The sudden surge of panic forced Chi Jingyan to tighten her embrace around Jiang Mengyu. She pressed her nose against the side of Jiang Mengyu’s neck, and only after inhaling the warm, familiar scent did her heart gradually settle.
“Don’t leave me,” Chi Jingyan murmured softly. “I really would die without you.”
She couldn’t bear the thought of losing Jiang Mengyu again.
When the person beside her remained silent, Chi Jingyan sought reassurance once more:
“You won’t leave me, right?”
