- Chapter 38.2 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Secretly in Love with the Female Lead Omega (35)
The Chi parents had only heard about this matter in passing and weren’t entirely clear on the details. They generally didn’t pry into Chi Jingyan’s private affairs, and from a young age, she had been cultivating her own network of influence.
Her luck had always been good. Though still somewhat green and naive, she always seemed to coincidentally meet influential figures of considerable status.
Otherwise, why would Old Master Chi hold her in such high regard?
Secretary Zhao paused, resisting the urge to glance at Jiang Mengyu. The young miss could say such things openly in front of Jiang Mengyu, it seemed she truly trusted her.
Then again, considering she’d already kidnapped Jiang Mengyu and brought her here, Jiang Mengyu had probably long since realized the young miss wasn’t exactly a good person.
“Your meaning is?”
“There are plenty who can replace him. I don’t need disloyal dogs.”
Only after speaking did Chi Jingyan remember she’d once said similar words to Jiang Mengyu. Her expression froze instantly, and she turned to look at Jiang Mengyu in dismay. “I didn’t mean.”
How could she explain this?
Say she wasn’t calling Jiang Mengyu a dog?
Jiang Mengyu showed no reaction, the indifference in her dark eyes sending a chill through Chi Jingyan. But with Secretary Zhao present, she couldn’t very well start coaxing her otherwise, wouldn’t he also learn she’d once called Jiang Mengyu a dog?
Chi Jingyan could only stealthily reach out to grasp Jiang Mengyu’s fingers, only for Jiang Mengyu to coldly pull away.
Secretary Zhao saw it all clearly.
Well-versed in preserving his employer’s dignity, he kept his expression neutral, though his internal shock was no less profound.
He recalled the last time he’d seen Jiang Mengyu when the young miss had driven her out, leaving her to sit pitifully by the entrance, waiting for her anger to subside.
How long had it been since then?
And now, it seemed the one desperately seeking affection was the young miss, while Jiang Mengyu appeared reluctant?
Chi Jingyan’s mind was wholly occupied with placating her Alpha, unwilling to waste another moment on irrelevant matters. She waved a hand impatiently. “Handle this matter for me.”
Secretary Zhao was perceptive. Seeing the main discussion concluded, he promptly gathered his things and left.
Spotting Zhou Heng downstairs, he shot him a meaningful look. Zhou Heng gave a slight shake of his head, and Secretary Zhao could only sigh.
With Secretary Zhao gone, only the two of them remained in the room. Chi Jingyan finally relaxed, leaning toward Jiang Mengyu.
Before Jiang Mengyu could rise and leave, Chi Jingyan seized the moment to softly inhale, as if in pain, and murmured, “My back really hurts.”
True to form, Jiang Mengyu didn’t pull away.
But neither did she reach out to support Chi Jingyan as hoped.
Chi Jingyan had the strange sensation that Jiang Mengyu now regarded her as nothing more than a lifeless vine clinging to her body.
Jiang Mengyu had grown so very cold.
Chi Jingyan couldn’t help but recall last night, the desperate strength with which the other woman had held her, as if trying to melt her into her very flesh, and the scorching heat of her lips when she kissed her legs.
She still preferred Jiang Mengyu from last night.
Even if it was all just pheromones at work, at least Jiang Mengyu had been lost in her, hadn’t she?
Chi Jingyan leaned against Jiang Mengyu and talked for a long while, but Jiang Mengyu ignored her the entire time, making her feel as though she were speaking to a statue.
Jiang Mengyu’s indifference was like an oppressive, suffocating gray cloud, pressing down on Chi Jingyan until she could barely breathe. She would rather Jiang Mengyu talk to her say anything, even if it was just sarcasm.
Just don’t ignore her.
With no other choice, Chi Jingyan tilted her head up and kissed the corner of Jiang Mengyu’s lips, murmuring softly, “Once I’ve fully recovered, I won’t keep you locked up anymore.”
“Okay?”
Chi Jingyan was certain now, there was a place for her in Jiang Mengyu’s heart.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have softened toward her time and time again.
“We’ll go back to school together.”
She paused, then added, “But you can’t sit with Chen He’an anymore. You’ll sit with me.”
“Alright?”
She still couldn’t shake her resentment toward Chen He’an. Even though she knew Jiang Mengyu had no feelings for him, the mere thought that Jiang Mengyu had still replied to his messages despite being deprived of her freedom made jealousy surge uncontrollably in Chi Jingyan’s heart.
At this, Jiang Mengyu finally reacted. “We’ll see.”
She didn’t trust her.
Chi Jingyan clenched her fists. Of course she knew why.
But since Jiang Mengyu had finally responded, Chi Jingyan seized the opportunity to press further. “The apartment has been regularly cleaned. I’ve had the other bedroom prepared. Didn’t you say before that you wanted to raise a cat?”
“Let’s pick out a beautiful kitten, and you can raise it yourself. Okay?”
Jiang Mengyu didn’t even look up. “No.”
Chi Jingyan studied her cold profile, unable to decipher her thoughts, and could only ask quietly, “What’s wrong with that?”
Jiang Mengyu flipped a page of her book, her tone light. “I plan to rent my own place. I won’t be living with you anymore.”
Chi Jingyan froze as if struck by a paralysis spell. After a brief moment of stunned silence, she immediately grabbed Jiang Mengyu’s wrist. “Why?!”
Her eyes welled up again, the lingering redness at the corners making her look both pitiful and obsessive.
“Why should I live with you?” Jiang Mengyu countered.
Chi Jingyan parted her lips. She wanted to say, shouldn’t people in a relationship live together? But Jiang Mengyu hadn’t agreed to get back together with her yet.
All she could do was soften her tone. “We used to live together before…”
Jiang Mengyu turned another page. “So?”
“Should I just go back with you and wait for the day you’re in a bad mood to kick me out again?”
Chi Jingyan’s heart clenched. “I wouldn’t!”
How could she ever drive Jiang Mengyu away again?
But Jiang Mengyu didn’t believe her.
She glanced at Chi Jingyan, said nothing, but the mockery in her eyes was unmistakable.
Chi Jingyan’s eyes were red, unable to speak for a long while. It wasn’t until Jiang Mengyu stood up to fetch water that she finally snapped out of it, wrapping her arms around Jiang Mengyu’s waist from behind and pressing her cheek against the small of her back.
“Then let’s sign a new contract. I’ll transfer the apartment to you, it’ll be your home, and I’ll just be staying there as your guest. Okay?”
When Jiang Mengyu remained silent, Chi Jingyan continued softly, coaxing her, “If I ever upset you in the future, you can just kick me out.”
Jiang Mengyu pried Chi Jingyan’s hands away, answering evasively, “If you’re not feeling well, go lie down.”
Progress!
Chi Jingyan sensed the softening in Jiang Mengyu’s attitude, and only then did the tension in her chest begin to ease.
She knew it wasn’t about the money for Jiang Mengyu, it was the act of being driven away before that had left a shadow in her heart.
Somehow, Chi Jingyan suddenly remembered Jiang Mengyu’s orphan background. Though Jiang Mengyu never spoke of it, she truly cherished the warmth others gave her.
Wasn’t that the case with that so-called “life-saving benefactor”?
Chi Jingyan immediately called Secretary Zhao, instructing him to arrange the transfer. She claimed she was giving the apartment to Jiang Mengyu, but in truth, she had far more prepared than just that.
When pursuing someone, you couldn’t be stingy, this was something Miss Chi understood well.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t stop her.
But she still barely spoke to Chi Jingyan.
Since Chi Jingyan wasn’t feeling well, the two did nothing that day. Jiang Mengyu read and did homework, while Chi Jingyan curled up in bed, sketching designs for a necklace.
When she had first mentioned it to Jiang Mengyu, Chi Jingyan had only a vague idea in mind. But once she started drawing, the strokes flowed effortlessly, and the rough outline of the necklace took shape on the paper almost without conscious thought.
Chi Jingyan turned the sketch over and over, admiring it, as if the finished piece already existed vividly in her mind.
A familiar scent of jasmine drifted near. Chi Jingyan looked up to find Jiang Mengyu standing before her at some point.
Her long lashes half-lowered, her gaze fixed unmistakably on the design in Chi Jingyan’s hands.
Instinctively, Chi Jingyan shielded it slightly, but then quickly raised the tablet back up to Jiang Mengyu, asking, “Do you like this kind of design?”
Her eyes held both nervousness and anticipation.
But Jiang Mengyu didn’t answer.
She simply stared at the sketch on the tablet, the emotions in her deep eyes so dark they were nearly indecipherable.
Chi Jingyan bit her lip, watching Jiang Mengyu. In this moment, she felt both incredibly close and yet impossibly distant.
Unable to resist, she hooked her fingers lightly around Jiang Mengyu’s and gave a small tug. “Don’t just stay silent, okay?”
Finally, Jiang Mengyu shifted her gaze to Chi Jingyan’s face. Her expression was inscrutable, somewhere between scrutiny and contemplation. “What’s the concept behind your design?”
Relieved that Jiang Mengyu didn’t seem displeased, Chi Jingyan explained, “The moon is you. The clouds are me.”
She revolved around Jiang Mengyu, chasing her, yearning for her.
Jiang Mengyu: “Why am I the moon?”
Chi Jingyan’s lashes trembled. Wasn’t Jiang Mengyu exactly like the moon?
At first, she seemed the epitome of gentleness only later, under the quiet moonlight, did one glimpse the coldness hidden beneath.
Just like the moon, she was a master at disguising herself.
Chi Jingyan lowered her eyes slightly without speaking, but the hand entwined with Jiang Mengyu’s fingers unconsciously tightened its grip, holding onto her firmly, refusing to let her leave.
Jiang Mengyu had once owned an identical necklace.
It was a gift from her elder sister, Jiang Wanjing, on her 19th birthday.
The two Jiang sisters had always been close, but Jiang Mengyu knew that Jiang Wanjing had once distanced herself from her for a time.
It wasn’t exactly estrangement more like Jiang Wanjing had been avoiding her on her own.
Jiang Mengyu wasn’t sure exactly when she had upset her sister. She tried to mend their relationship, but Jiang Wanjing always claimed to be too busy and refused to see her.
Later, the ice between them finally broke when Jiang Wanjing gifted Jiang Mengyu a necklace she had designed herself for her birthday.
Jiang Mengyu wore that necklace constantly until the day she detonated a bomb, perishing alongside the male and female leads, after which the necklace vanished.
Jiang Mengyu stared fixedly at Chi Jingyan.
The person before her bore no resemblance to Jiang Wanjing whatsoever.
Jiang Wanjing had been mature and steady, appearing cold and unapproachable only to outsiders, but to her, she had been the epitome of gentleness and care, rarely ever refusing any of her requests.
Chi Jingyan, on the other hand, was arrogant, childish, and domineering, someone who enjoyed treating people like dogs and playing the victim while acting shamelessly.
How could someone like this have designed a necklace identical to Jiang Wanjing’s?
“System,” Jiang Mengyu said expressionlessly.
“I need an explanation.”
