Though she wanted to explode, Chi Jingyan restrained herself. She had no intention of arguing in the hallway, so she brushed past Jiang Mengyu into the room, coldly commanding:
“Close the door.”
Jiang Mengyu silently shut it behind them.
Chi Jingyan carelessly tossed her bag onto the coffee table. Seeing the half-eaten breakfast beside it, irritation bubbled up again.
“How relaxed you are, still in the mood for breakfast.”
Meanwhile, she’d been running around all morning without even a sip of water.
Jiang Mengyu lowered her lashes. “If that’s all you came to say, you can leave now.”
Chi Jingyan bit her lip. Of course that wasn’t why she came, but whenever she saw Jiang Mengyu’s indifferent attitude, her mouth seemed to act on its own.
After two deep breaths, she met Jiang Mengyu’s eyes squarely, her tone heavy:
“About having dinner with Chu Muyao, I can explain.”
She watched Jiang Mengyu closely for any reaction, but the woman remained impassive, stirring unease and confusion in Chi Jingyan’s chest.
Still, she pressed on: “I never intended to get engaged to her. It was just to placate my parents. Chu Muyao knows this too. If you don’t believe me, I can have her explain it to you personally.”
Jiang Mengyu said nothing. She didn’t even look at Chi Jingyan, her dark lashes half-lowered as her gaze drifted somewhere indistinct.
This was nothing like what Chi Jingyan had imagined. She’d expected Jiang Mengyu to be either overjoyed or angrily demanding answers, anything but this utter detachment.
“The recording… I can explain that too.” Chi Jingyan dug her nails into her palm, using the pain to stay focused. “I did say those words.”
“But Grandpa was adamant about the engagement. I was worried he’d harm you, so I went along with his narrative.”
For Chi Jingyan to swallow her pride and patiently explain like this was already extraordinary.
To her, these words were practically an admission that Jiang Mengyu mattered to her, that everything had just been an act for her family’s sake.
Yet Jiang Mengyu remained silent. Her quietude made Chi Jingyan’s skin crawl with cold. Staring at the woman before her, a wave of restless frustration and bitter hurt welled up inside.
“Jiang Mengyu.” Chi Jingyan’s eyes reddened once more without her realizing it. “Say something.”
“What do you want me to say?” Jiang Mengyu finally lifted her gaze to meet Chi Jingyan’s. Her own eyes held an unmistakable weariness. “Are you trying to say that I wasn’t just a passing amusement to you, is that it?”
Chi Jingyan stiffened, silent. That was indeed what she had intended, but the faint trace of mockery in Jiang Mengyu’s words made her hesitate.
What did Jiang Mengyu mean by that?
Did she not believe her?
Jiang Mengyu’s tone remained calm, almost detached. “Chi Jingyan, maybe you do like me a little. But it’s more like the affection one has for a well-behaved pet. The only reason you’re so fixated now is because I showed you my claws, and you found it intriguing so you wanted to tame me.”
Once stripped of her thorns, Jiang Mengyu would become just like everyone else in Chi Jingyan’s eyes, utterly unremarkable.
“Today, you can hide the fact that you had dinner with Chu Muyao because of your grandfather’s orders. Tomorrow, you could abandon me for countless other reasons.”
All of it simply proved that Jiang Mengyu wasn’t important enough in Chi Jingyan’s heart to warrant an unwavering choice.
“And I… I no longer want to pin my hopes on someone so uncertain.”
Chi Jingyan’s breathing grew uneven. She couldn’t help but argue back, “But you knew from the very beginning, didn’t you?”
Knew the pressures and responsibilities she carried.
Why had Jiang Mengyu accepted it all back then, only to refuse to endure it now?
Chi Jingyan paused, her eyes flashing with bitterness. “Is it because you found out I wasn’t the one who saved you?”
If she had truly been Jiang Mengyu’s savior, would Jiang Mengyu still be so determined to leave her now?
Was that debt of gratitude really so important?
Chi Jingyan found herself envying a person whose identity wasn’t even confirmed.
Jiang Mengyu sighed softly. “Chi Jingyan, you’re still the same.”
“You never think you’re in the wrong.”
“To you, as long as you lower yourself just enough to crook a finger at me, I should come running to you with my tail wagging, is that it?”
Even in her attempts to explain, Chi Jingyan’s tone carried an unconscious air of superiority.
Chi Jingyan fell silent. Had she really been the one at fault?
A hint of confusion flickered across her face.
“Just go,” Jiang Mengyu turned her gaze away, her voice quiet. “This room was booked with your money. I’ll pay you back.”
“I—” This wasn’t at all what Chi Jingyan had expected.
She had to admit Jiang Mengyu was right. Before coming here, Chi Jingyan had indeed assumed that Jiang Mengyu might be angry for a while, but once she explained herself, Jiang Mengyu would surely agree to reconcile.
After all, Chi Jingyan truly didn’t believe she had done anything wrong.
So why was Jiang Mengyu still so upset?
Chi Jingyan parted her lips, wanting to speak, but no words came out. The look of disappointment, almost resignation on Jiang Mengyu’s face extinguished even her anger.
Her gaze drifted downward from Jiang Mengyu’s pale face, settling on her neck. There, amidst the lingering marks of kisses, were two vivid red lines likely from when the necklace had been yanked the night before.
She recoiled as if pricked by a needle, swiftly averting her gaze.
Jiang Mengyu clearly had no intention of speaking, and Chi Jingyan also felt there was nothing left to say.
She took a few steps toward the door but couldn’t resist glancing back one last time, only to find Jiang Mengyu quietly watching her retreating figure. When their eyes met, Jiang Mengyu calmly looked away, her expression indifferent.
Chi Jingyan curled her fingers slightly before finally turning and leaving.
Coming here to explain herself had already exhausted all her pride. Her self-respect wouldn’t allow her to stoop any lower.
If Jiang Mengyu was determined to end things, then so be it. Chi Jingyan clenched her jaw, it wasn’t as if she couldn’t live without Jiang Mengyu.
Fine, let’s break up!
Chi Jingyan left.
The room remained silent for a long while before Jiang Mengyu finally moved.
She bent down and opened the bag Chi Jingyan had brought filled to the brim with cold medicine and her school uniform.
System 031 cautiously spoke up: [Host…]
It had started to understand. The host seemed to want Female Lead A to coax her a little, even just say a few soft words. But Female Lead A simply wasn’t the type to comfort others, which was why things had escalated to this point.
Yet System 031 didn’t feel too sorry for its host. It had long since recognized the cold indifference at her core. Female Lead A might not know how to speak gently, but the host wasn’t much better.
Jiang Mengyu took the medicine and changed into her school uniform before heading to class that afternoon. She didn’t check out of the hotel room, even extending her stay for two more nights.
The moment Jiang Mengyu left, Zhou Heng sent housekeeping to inspect the room and reported the findings to Chi Jingyan.
“One box of medicine was opened, two pills are missing. She must have taken them.”
Chi Jingyan’s face remained expressionless. “What does that have to do with me? Don’t bother telling me whether she lives or dies from now on.”
Zhou Heng: “…Should I head back to the training base, then?”
Chi Jingyan: “…”
Chi Jingyan: “And if someone takes advantage of her absence to kidnap her, will you take responsibility?”
Zhou Heng sighed. So the young mistress still cared about Jiang Mengyu, they’d just had some kind of falling out.
“I’ll keep a close eye on her. Don’t worry.”
Chi Jingyan didn’t attend class that afternoon. Jiang Mengyu first caught up on the homework she’d missed in the morning, then handed her meticulously organized notes to Chen He’an.
Chen He’an, noticing her slightly haggard appearance, couldn’t help but ask quietly, “Are you okay?”
“Mm.” Jiang Mengyu responded, though her gaze inadvertently drifted toward Chi Jingyan’s empty seat.
Chen He’an clicked her tongue. “So dedicated.”
Even sick, she still came to class, no wonder she was the top student in their year.
She needed to work harder too.
For two whole days, Chi Jingyan didn’t show up to class.
Jiang Mengyu’s chat history with her remained frozen from days ago. She didn’t know if Chi Jingyan had blocked her, but she was aware that someone had been following her.
On the third day, Chi Jingyan still hadn’t returned, but Chu Muyao sought Jiang Mengyu out first.
The two walked to the quiet artificial lake. Studying Jiang Mengyu’s aloof expression, Chu Muyao pressed her lips together and said softly, “Do you know why Jingyan hasn’t been in class these past two days?”
Jiang Mengyu didn’t look at Chu Muyao. Instead, her eyes settled on the black swans gliding effortlessly across the water. “Do you?”
Chu Muyao: “…I heard Jingyan had a big argument with your mother and really upset her.”
“Your mother even seemed to hit someone, but Jingyan didn’t back down either.”
As for the reason behind it, both Chu Muyao and Jiang Mengyu knew perfectly well.
Jiang Mengyu remained silent for a moment before suddenly asking out of the blue, “Did Chi Jingyan send you to tell me this?”
How could family conflicts like these possibly become common knowledge if Chi’s mother was involved?
Chu Muyao was momentarily stunned. Meeting Jiang Mengyu’s deep, unfathomable black eyes, the words she had intended to say stuck in her throat.
How was she supposed to explain this?
Chi Jingyan had repeatedly warned her not to reveal that she had sent Chu Muyao to sound out Jiang Mengyu’s thoughts.
But Chi Jingyan hadn’t mentioned that Jiang Mengyu would be this sharp, figuring it out in an instant.
It wasn’t that Chu Muyao wasn’t trying to keep Chi Jingyan’s secret.
She was just really nervous, and the only thing she could do was stay silent.
After all, she was terrible at lying.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t need her to say anything. “I understand what you mean.”
“Tell Chi Jingyan that if she has something to say, she should come talk to me herself.”
Chu Muyao let out a quiet sigh of relief. “Okay.”
But then she suddenly realized something was off.
She hadn’t actually admitted anything just now.
Was Jiang Mengyu bluffing her?
Jiang Mengyu was still staying at the hotel.
She had originally planned to look for a suitable place to rent, but with the heavy workload from assignments these past couple of days, she hadn’t found the time.
After pressing the elevator button, Jiang Mengyu waited as it ascended. Just then, someone came rushing over in a hurry, calling out, “Wait!”
The familiar voice instantly drew Jiang Mengyu’s gaze.
The girl had an unfamiliar face, but her voice was unmistakably identical to Chi Jingyan’s, and even her figure was strikingly similar.
As Jiang Mengyu studied the girl, the girl was also sneaking glances at her out of the corner of her eye.
Was this the target of her mission?
She was really so beautiful!
Seeing her in person was even more striking than photos or videos. When those dark eyes turned toward her, the girl actually felt a little nervous.
She waited and waited. Finally, just as the elevator was about to reach Jiang Mengyu’s floor, she heard the person beside her speak softly, “Hello.”
“Can I add you on WeChat?”
