- Chapter 34.1 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Who Secretly Loves the Female Lead Omega (31)
Break Up Then!
Jiang Mengyu first checked into a hotel room to stay.
Perhaps because she had been exposed to the cold wind for too long last night, she woke up feeling groggy, with a stuffy nose and a faint nasal tone in her voice.
It was raining outside. When Jiang Mengyu left Chi Jingyan’s home, she hadn’t brought anything with her not even the clothes she was wearing were suitable for going out.
Today was Friday, and she should have gone to school, but Jiang Mengyu didn’t have her uniform.
After getting up, she pushed open the window and watched the raindrops beating against the glass. She decided to call her homeroom teacher to ask for half a day’s leave.
Since the results of the monthly exams had been released, the homeroom teacher’s attitude toward Jiang Mengyu had noticeably softened. Hearing that she wanted to take leave, the teacher even asked several concerned questions, only relaxing after confirming that Jiang Mengyu wasn’t seriously ill.
“Rest well at home, no need to rush.”
After hanging up, Jiang Mengyu stood by the window for a while longer, letting the cold wind blow on her, a move that even left System 031 puzzled.
[Host, aren’t you already sick?]
Jiang Mengyu reached out and closed the window. “Mm.”
In just that short time, her nasal tone became even more pronounced, and her usually expressionless face seemed to carry a faint flush.
031 watched as she covered her lips and coughed lightly twice. Suddenly, it had an epiphany. [Host, are you trying to play pitiful?]
But the female lead Alpha is probably so angry right now that she wants to kill you. Even if you look pitiful, what’s the point if she can’t see it?
Jiang Mengyu didn’t explain. She turned back to the bed, lay down, and closed her eyes, intending to sleep a little longer.
Outside, the rain continued to pour noisily, and Chi Jingyan’s emotions were equally turbulent.
She hadn’t slept all night, and when she woke up, her eyes were swollen like walnuts. Thinking she might see Jiang Mengyu at school today, Chi Jingyan forced herself to pull herself together.
The swelling in her eyes had subsided somewhat, but her face still bore traces of exhaustion.
Although she now knew that it was Madam Chi who had sent someone to confront Jiang Mengyu likely the main reason Jiang Mengyu had decided to leave Chi Jingyan still couldn’t forget those cold, cutting words.
She didn’t know whether Jiang Mengyu had spoken out of resentment or simply seized the opportunity.
It felt like countless tiny figures were fighting in her mind, making her head throb and her chest tighten as if gripped by an invisible hand.
Chi Jingyan had never experienced anything like this before. She didn’t know what to do. Her past pride told her not to lower her head easily, or she would be completely controlled.
But every time she thought of Jiang Mengyu’s retreating figure last night, her chest tightened unbearably. She didn’t want something like this to happen again.
In her mind, Chi Jingyan convinced herself: Jiang Mengyu had only misunderstood her relationship with Chu Moyao, which was why she had lashed out in pain. Ultimately, this was her fault, she hadn’t explained things clearly to Jiang Mengyu.
From Jiang Mengyu’s perspective, she had never given her a clear answer and had even secretly met another person’s parents for dinner. Without knowing her plans, Jiang Mengyu would naturally assume she was trying to play both sides.
Anyone would be upset after being toyed with like that, let alone Jiang Mengyu, who had always been particularly sensitive about Chu Muyao’s existence. The angrier she appeared, the more it proved she cared.
Chi Jingyan let out a sigh. If that was the case, she wasn’t above swallowing her pride to explain things to Jiang Mengyu but Jiang Mengyu would have to apologize for her attitude last night too!
Chi Jingyan had never been openly mocked like that before.
And especially not by someone she liked.
Remembering the look on Jiang Mengyu’s face when she accused her of just playing around last night, Chi Jingyan felt a pang of heartache amidst her anger.
Jiang Mengyu, you big idiot!
If she really didn’t like her, why would she have asked for a temporary mark in the first place?
With these tangled emotions, Chi Jingyan hurried to school, only to find Jiang Mengyu’s seat empty.
She waited for a while, but there was still no sign of her.
Just then, Chen He’an walked into the classroom.
Perhaps noticing Chi Jingyan’s gaze, she hesitated before approaching. “Classmate Chi, Jiang Mengyu took the day off.”
Chi Jingyan instinctively frowned. “How do you know?”
Her tone was sharp, but Chen He’an didn’t take it personally. The young miss had always been like this, her moods as unpredictable as June weather.
“I just went to the homeroom teacher’s office, and she told me.”
Chi Jingyan suddenly realized. She had left in such a rush this morning, preoccupied with seeing Jiang Mengyu at school. To avoid anyone witnessing her disheveled state, she had spent all her time getting ready and hadn’t even checked her messages.
She had been an idiot.
Taking a deep breath, Chi Jingyan thought of all the anxiety and hesitation she had carried with her. She had even rehearsed what to say, only for Jiang Mengyu to not even show up.
Chen He’an was still watching her quietly, her gaze almost knowing, making Chi Jingyan feel like a complete joke.
Even Chen He’an had known about Jiang Mengyu’s absence before she did.
Though she knew it was just a coincidence and that she hadn’t checked Zhou Heng’s messages, anger still flared inside her.
She instinctively resented everyone around Jiang Mengyu. She had managed to tolerate it before, but after last night’s argument, this twisted possessiveness had reached its peak.
If possible, Chi Jingyan really wanted to lock Jiang Mengyu away, make her see only her, rely only on her, love only her.
Suppressing those dark thoughts, she grabbed her things and left the classroom without another glance at Chen He’an.
Chen He’an adjusted her glasses, watching Chi Jingyan’s hurried departure. What was up with these two? They were both acting so strange.
Earlier, Jiang Mengyu had suddenly messaged her, asking her to tell Chi Jingyan about her absence but not to reveal that she had been the one to ask.
Chen He’an found it odd. Didn’t Jiang Mengyu have Chi Jingyan’s WeChat? Why couldn’t she just tell her herself?
And why did she need to tell Chi Jingyan specifically?
Although puzzled, Chen He’an agreed to help Jiang Mengyu with this small favor, considering the full set of collector’s edition exam analysis she had sent and her promise of comprehensive subject notes.
She had originally thought Chi Jingyan wouldn’t react much upon hearing the news. To her surprise, Chi’s gaze instantly turned sharp and icy. While Chi had never been particularly warm toward her before, it had never been this extreme as if they were mortal enemies.
Chen He’an didn’t understand.
Oh well, maybe this was just the unique thought process of a top student.
Let them sort it out themselves, Chen He’an secretly mused. If they ended up neglecting their studies because of this, they might not rank first and second in the next exam.
Perhaps she, currently ranked sixth in the grade, could get a taste of the top three’s rarefied air.
Ah, she really was too wicked.
Only after getting into the car did Chi Jingyan have time to check the messages Zhou Heng had sent her. As expected, he had already informed her earlier.
[Jiang Mengyu never left the hotel.]
[At 9:30, I had staff knock on her door, she answered.]
Chi Jingyan glanced at the time on her phone: 9:50.
If she had checked her messages earlier, she wouldn’t have made this pointless trip.
Rubbing her temples, Chi Jingyan called Zhou Heng directly. As soon as the call connected, she asked bluntly, “Is she still at the hotel?”
“Yes,” Zhou Heng replied. “After the staff left, she closed the door and hasn’t stepped out since.”
Pausing slightly, Zhou Heng hesitated but, hearing the slight hoarseness in Chi Jingyan’s voice and the urgency she couldn’t hide, added quietly, “The housekeeping staff said she seemed to have a cold, she looked unwell and sounded congested.”
Chi Jingyan scoffed through gritted teeth. “She deserves it!”
Ignoring her pleas to stay, wearing so little in the cold night wind served her right to catch a cold.
That said, her own condition wasn’t much better than Jiang Mengyu’s. The thought brought Chi Jingyan a strange sense of balance.
If she had cried all night while Jiang Mengyu remained completely unaffected, Chi Jingyan would have been furious.
Still, she instructed the driver to stop at a pharmacy. Unsure which medicine would work, she simply bought every well-known cold remedy available.
When the driver emerged from the pharmacy carrying a massive bag of medicine, he couldn’t help but marvel inwardly, just how long would it take to finish all this?
The young miss was truly excessive.
Meanwhile, Jiang Mengyu sat on the sofa, sipping porridge. A small plate of steamed buns and a boiled egg sat before her, all delivered earlier by hotel staff.
Awoken shortly after falling asleep, she was unusually listless. Though she appeared no different outwardly, System 031 noticed her reactions were slightly slower than usual.
Before she could finish the porridge, another knock came at the door. Wiping the traces of porridge from her lips, Jiang Mengyu rose slowly to answer it.
As expected, Chi Jingyan stood outside, holding two bags, one filled with medicine, the other seemingly containing clothes.
Jiang Mengyu lowered her eyes listlessly. “Do you need something?”
Chi Jingyan had barely managed to calm herself before coming. She’d repeatedly told herself to speak properly this time, to not say anything reckless again.
Yet the moment she heard Jiang Mengyu’s voice, Chi Jingyan found it hard to control her temper.
What did she mean by “Do you need something?”
Did Jiang Mengyu not want to see her?
“What, can’t I come?” Chi Jingyan took another step forward, her gaze sweeping past Jiang Mengyu to scan the hotel room.
Or was it because it was her who came, so Jiang Mengyu was disappointed?
Then who did she want to see?
Chen He’an?
Chi Jingyan’s brows furrowed tightly as she subtly sniffed Jiang Mengyu’s clothes. Only after confirming there were no unfamiliar scents did her expression soften slightly.
Jiang Mengyu leaned against the doorframe. “I’m not dead yet. Sorry to disappoint you.”
“Jiang Mengyu!” Chi Jingyan was furious. Did Jiang Mengyu have to speak to her like this?
