- Chapter 22.3 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Secretly in Love with the Female Lead Omega (19)
Even after the call ended, she remained dazed for a moment.
She turned off her phone, her reflection in the dark screen revealing an uncharacteristically troubled expression.
Why had Jiang Mengyu crossed her mind just now?
Chi Jingyan reminded herself inwardly Jiang Mengyu was merely a temporary tool to help her through her rut. She could treat Jiang Mengyu as an obedient pet, a useful instrument, but never as an equal, someone she could truly engage with.
She was going to marry Chu Muyao. Chu Muyao was the Omega suited for her.
How could the future heir of the Chi family possibly associate with an Alpha of no standing?
…
When Jiang Mengyu returned to the study with a glass of honey water, Chi Jingyan was sitting in her office chair, staring blankly out the floor-to-ceiling window.
Hearing the movement, Chi Jingyan turned her gaze toward her. “Why did you take so long?”
Her tone was cold and impatient, devoid of the earlier laziness and intimacy.
“I didn’t want to disturb you.” Jiang Mengyu set the honey water in front of Chi Jingyan, who glanced at it but made no move to drink.
“I don’t feel like it right now,” she said, locking eyes with Jiang Mengyu before issuing a detached command. “Go to my walk-in closet and find a pink diamond necklace. Pack it in a gift box.”
She didn’t explain its purpose, but Jiang Mengyu already knew.
“For Chu Muyao?” Her voice betrayed no emotion.
Chi Jingyan frowned slightly. “That’s none of your concern.”
Jiang Mengyu clenched her fingers. “Ayan, you know very well.”
You know very well how much Chu Muyao’s existence bothers me. Why are you doing this on purpose?
Chi Jingyan still carried the scent of jasmine, proof that Jiang Mengyu had marked her. They had been intimately close, yet now she was asking Jiang Mengyu to prepare a gift meant to please another girl.
Her cruelty was deliberate, her indifference unrelenting.
Chi Jingyan didn’t seem to think she was being excessive. She gazed coldly at Jiang Mengyu and said, “I don’t know.”
“Nor do I want to know.”
“Jiang Mengyu, don’t forget your place.”
This wasn’t the first time Chi Jingyan had said this to Jiang Mengyu, but never had it felt so chilling.
The mingled scents of jasmine and lychee-pear wine in the room were gradually dissipating, much like Chi Jingyan’s attitude toward Jiang Mengyu, reverting to how it had been at the beginning.
“I kept you only because you’re still useful.” Chi Jingyan’s eyes were filled with mockery. “If you think a temporary mark would make me accept you, you’re delusional.”
Jiang Mengyu remained silent. After a long pause, she finally replied softly, “Alright.”
“I understand what you mean.”
“Miss.”
She turned and left the study again, heading to the dressing room to find the necklace Chi Jingyan had mentioned.
Only after the door closed once more did Chi Jingyan let her guard down. For a moment, she thought she had seen a glimmer of damp redness in Jiang Mengyu’s eyes.
Had she cried?
Chi Jingyan forced herself not to dwell on it. Whatever happened to Jiang Mengyu wasn’t her concern.
She was only paying extra attention to Jiang Mengyu because of the pheromones’ influence. That was all.
…
The necklace Chi Jingyan had mentioned was placed conspicuously, and Jiang Mengyu spotted it immediately.
With an indifferent expression, she took the necklace out and carefully placed it in a jewelry box.
System 031 hesitated: [Host…]
Logic told it that the host didn’t seem like someone who would be easily hurt, but 031 couldn’t help feeling distressed.
The protagonist was being so cruel.
What was worse, the host still had to obey her and prepare gifts for her.
What was that phrase again…
031 suddenly remembered a term it had seen while browsing the internet: “washing underwear with a cold face.”
Though the host wasn’t washing underwear well, her actions were pretty much the same.
But 031 didn’t dare say this to Jiang Mengyu’s face.
Though the host treated it decently, 031 still felt somewhat intimidated by her.
It couldn’t read Jiang Mengyu’s thoughts. If it said the host didn’t care about anything, she was still fairly proactive in completing tasks. But if it said she cared, she kept disrupting the original plot.
031 couldn’t even figure out how Jiang Mengyu truly felt about Chi Jingyan.
At first, it thought Jiang Mengyu disliked Chi Jingyan, but when the host marked her, the emotion in her eyes didn’t seem fake.
Human emotions were so complicated.
Far beyond what an AI could comprehend.
…
Jiang Mengyu brought the prepared necklace to show Chi Jingyan, who glanced at it briefly before closing the box indifferently.
“Zhou Heng will pick you up tomorrow morning.” She didn’t look at Jiang Mengyu, her gaze landing somewhere else. “Don’t disappoint me.”
“If I fail, will you discard me?” Jiang Mengyu asked softly.
Chi Jingyan finally deigned to look at her. “What do you think?”
She had no use for worthless trash.
“I’ll satisfy you.” Jiang Mengyu’s tone was flat, her eyes dark like unfathomable, icy pools.
Chi Jingyan neither agreed nor disagreed. “We’ll see.”
Their conversation ended there.
That night, Chi Jingyan didn’t have another episode, and Jiang Mengyu spent her first night in the apartment sleeping alone.
Jiang Mengyu was having trouble sleeping.
Perhaps the air purifier in the room wasn’t working properly, but she could still faintly detect the lingering scent of Chi Jingyan’s pheromones, maybe remnants from the night before, clinging to the bedsheets.
Her body grew restless from the scent, while her heart felt a pang of dissatisfaction at the empty space beside her in bed.
This sensation was entirely new to Jiang Mengyu. No wonder so many Alphas and Omegas fell for each other after marking pheromones truly had a profound effect on people.
It was as if she had been split into two parts: her soul coldly observing the surrender of her flesh.
Would Chi Jingyan feel the same way?
Jiang Mengyu didn’t know.
By the time she freshened up and opened the bedroom door, Chi Jingyan was already seated at the dining table, eating breakfast.
She wore the uniform of S High, a white blouse paired with a plaid skirt, topped with a beige blazer and a neatly tied necktie looking crisp and immaculate.
This was exactly how Chi Jingyan had dressed the first time Jiang Mengyu saw her.
Noticing Jiang Mengyu’s silent stare, Chi Jingyan lowered her gaze to inspect herself, confirming nothing was amiss before asking coolly, “What are you looking at?”
Jiang Mengyu shook her head.
Chi Jingyan set down her spoon. Taking in Jiang Mengyu’s black jacket and trousers, she suddenly understood.
“You want to go back to school too?”
Jiang Mengyu neither confirmed nor denied it, only countered, “Can I?”
She had been the one expelled on Chi Jingyan’s orders. If she wanted to return to S High, she naturally needed Chi Jingyan’s approval.
In her mind, System No. 031 stirred with excitement.
The host is finally getting back on track with their mission!
It was only then that Chi Jingyan remembered Jiang Mengyu’s grades had actually been quite good. If not for her own troublemaking, she would never have been expelled in the first place.
Wiping a trace of congee from the corner of her lips, Chi Jingyan replied, “That depends on your performance.”
Without giving Jiang Mengyu a chance to plead further, she turned and went back to her room to gather her things.
Seizing the opportunity, Jiang Mengyu finished her own breakfast. As she swallowed the last spoonful of congee, Chi Jingyan emerged from her room, bag in hand.
Jiang Mengyu followed Chi Jingyan downstairs. From a distance, she noticed someone staring intently at her.
The person was likely a male Alpha tall, probably over six feet, with a muscular build and a sharp, intimidating gaze.
That must be Zhou Heng.
Sure enough.
Chi Jingyan walked straight toward him. Only when she was close did the man nod slightly. “Young Miss.”
“Mn.” Chi Jingyan didn’t look back. “I’m leaving her to you.”
Zhou Heng dipped his head. “You needn’t worry.”
With that, Chi Jingyan bent down and got into the car. Jiang Mengyu stood nearby, watching as the door closed and the window rolled up.
Chi Jingyan’s face gradually disappeared from view. From start to finish, she never once glanced back at Jiang Mengyu.
Just like that, she handed Jiang Mengyu over to someone else.
Only when the car had driven far into the distance did Jiang Mengyu finally look away. Beside her, Zhou Heng was still staring at her, unblinking.
He didn’t go easy on Jiang Mengyu just because she was young and a girl. His gaze was filled with scrutiny as he looked at her, exuding an overwhelming sense of pressure.
“Follow me,” Zhou Heng said in a low voice.
He wanted to see for himself just what it was about this Alpha that had earned the young lady’s favor.
Jiang Mengyu wasn’t intimidated by Zhou Heng. She followed him and got into another car.
She, too, wanted to know how her current abilities stacked up against those of a professional mercenary.
In the back seat, Chi Jingyan glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Jiang Mengyu still standing in place.
She raised a hand and rubbed her temples.
Zhou Heng knew his limits, he wouldn’t actually let anything happen to Jiang Mengyu.
There was nothing for her to worry about.
Chi Jingyan silently reminded herself.
What she should be thinking about now was whether Chu Muyao would like the gift she had prepared for her.
