- Chapter 21.3 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Who Secretly Loves the Female Lead Omega (18)
Before Chi Jingyan’s footsteps even reached her, the scent of jasmine mixed with snow pear and lychee wine drifted over, making Jiang Mengyu’s heartbeat quicken. It seemed that ever since she temporarily marked Chi Jingyan, she had become even more sensitive to her pheromones.
The sweet, wine-like scent grew closer.
Just as Chi Jingyan was about to appear at the kitchen doorway, Jiang Mengyu tilted her head swiftly while holding the bowl.
Bang!!
The bullet grazed past her hair and struck the wall in front of her, leaving a deep bullet hole.
A wisp of white smoke rose from the impact, a testament to how ruthless that shot had been. But Jiang Mengyu first looked down at her hand.
Some of the porridge had spilled from the bowl.
Holding the bowl, Jiang Mengyu turned around. Chi Jingyan stood at the kitchen doorway, staring at her coldly, the familiar small silver pistol still in her hand.
“Why did you dodge this time?” Chi Jingyan mocked.
Of course.
The first time Jiang Mengyu hadn’t dodged, it was because she hadn’t seen real killing intent in Chi Jingyan’s eyes, she knew Chi Jingyan wouldn’t actually pull the trigger.
But if she hadn’t dodged this time, that bullet would have blown her head off.
Yet she didn’t voice her thoughts. Instead, she pressed her lips together and said softly, “You haven’t had breakfast yet.”
“Who the hell wants breakfast now?!”
Chi Jingyan was so furious she could kill Jiang Mengyu right then and there!
“Jiang! Meng! Yu!” Chi Jingyan spat out each word through gritted teeth. “You’ve got some real nerve.”
Jiang Mengyu shot her a glance, unfazed. “You know I’m an orphan.”
Chi Jingyan’s eyes burned with rage. “Get the hell out of my sight right now!!”
If Jiang Mengyu continued to stay in front of her, Chi Jingyan couldn’t guarantee she wouldn’t lash out at her again.
“Ayan.” Jiang Mengyu set the bowl down on the table, her eyes slightly lowered, her expression tinged with dejection. “Are you abandoning me?”
Chi Jingyan sneered coldly, “I have no interest in keeping a dog that bites. Get out!”
The gland at the back of her neck still throbbed with pain. Just the thought of how Jiang Mengyu had bitten through her gland and injected her own pheromones into her body made Chi Jingyan seethe with murderous rage.
She clenched her teeth so hard they nearly cracked, her eyes glistening faintly with unshed tears.
Jiang Mengyu could sense the violent fluctuations in her pheromones. Whether it was due to the temporary mark or not, she seemed able to understand Chi Jingyan’s emotions through them.
“I know you’re furious, and I won’t try to justify myself,” Jiang Mengyu said softly. “You can punish me however you want, but don’t let it harm your health.”
“Get out!!”
Chi Jingyan’s gaze swept the room before she decisively grabbed the bowl of plain congee from the table and hurled it to the ground.
The vegetable and lean meat porridge Jiang Mengyu had painstakingly prepared early that morning splattered across the floor, shards of the porcelain bowl scattering everywhere.
Chi Jingyan was truly beyond furious.
Jiang Mengyu recalled how casually and lightly she had reassured her last night that it was just a temporary mark. Some things really only felt unbearable when they happened to you.
If it had been Chi Jingyan marking her last night, would she still be this angry?
Jiang Mengyu had no intention of provoking her further. She bent down to pick up a broken shard. “Remember to have Secretary Zhao send someone to clean this up later. Don’t cut your feet.”
“None of your business!” Chi Jingyan pointed sharply at the door. “Get out right now!”
Her voice trembled with rage.
Jiang Mengyu obediently walked out, quietly closing the door behind her.
Seeing this, System 031 couldn’t even gloat anymore.
[Host, what do we do now?]
Though it knew the current situation was entirely the host’s own doing, seeing her so pitifully kicked out still made 031 feel a pang of sympathy.
“Wait.” Jiang Mengyu sat down on the shoe bench by the door.
031: [Huh?]
Jiang Mengyu: “What else?”
Chi Jingyan had only told her to get out, she hadn’t specified where to go.
As long as she stayed out of Chi Jingyan’s sight for now, it would suffice.
Jiang Mengyu hadn’t brought her phone, so she had no idea how long she’d been waiting by the door. She’d only taken one sip of the porridge she’d made that morning, and now she was starting to feel hungry.
Suddenly, the elevator nearby dinged. Jiang Mengyu looked up and locked eyes with Secretary Zhao as he stepped out, followed closely by Professor Chen.
Secretary Zhao wasn’t surprised to see Jiang Mengyu sitting outside, but Professor Chen’s eyes lit up the moment he recognized her. “Did the young mistress kick you out?”
His question was blunt. Anyone else might have felt even more anxious being asked like that.
“Yes.” Jiang Mengyu answered frankly, without a hint of evasion.
Professor Chen grew even more excited. “In that case, can you come with me?”
Without waiting for her response, he nimbly sidestepped Secretary Zhao and strode into the apartment. “I’ll go ask the young mistress myself!”
In his eyes, Jiang Mengyu had no right to make her own choices her fate was firmly in Chi Jingyan’s hands.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t bother arguing with him. Under the sympathetic gazes of the two assistants, she lowered her head and continued to wait quietly.
The atmosphere inside the room was even more stifling than outside.
Secretary Zhao only knew that Jiang Mengyu had angered Chi Jingyan, but he wasn’t aware of the details. He suspected it might be related to Chi Jingyan’s rut, but he never imagined Jiang Mengyu would have the audacity to do something like this.
She had temporarily marked Chi Jingyan!
“Miss, your condition…”
Secretary Zhao’s expression grew much more serious.
Chi Jingyan’s face was particularly grim. Physically, she wasn’t in too much discomfort aside from the swollen, burning ache at the scent gland on the back of her neck, there were no other issues. But emotionally, she was furious.
Suddenly, she remembered the first time they met after Jiang Mengyu dropped out of school. Back then, Jiang Mengyu had said she wanted to try marking her. Later, Jiang Mengyu even experimented with a few other Alphas.
Perhaps it was because Jiang Mengyu had been so obedient lately that Chi Jingyan had forgotten Jiang Mengyu was, at her core, a dog that could bite.
She’d been bitten by this dog, and it was her own fault for being careless.
The discomfort at the back of her neck was a constant reminder of just how naive and foolish she had been.
Chi Jingyan closed her eyes briefly. “Well?”
She was asking Professor Chen.
“It’s similar to last time,” Professor Chen replied, unable to hide his excitement. “The hormone levels in your body have stabilized.”
This meant Jiang Mengyu’s pheromones were highly effective far more so than suppressants.
Just yesterday, he had suggested that Chi Jingyan accept a temporary mark from Jiang Mengyu. Chi Jingyan had coldly refused at the time, leaving him deeply disappointed. He never expected things would take such a turn so quickly.
“Her pheromones have integrated seamlessly into your system. Not only have they not negatively affected your physiological indicators, but they’ve also made your own pheromones more stable.”
Truly a 100% compatibility rate.
Professor Chen’s eyes shone with amazement.
Hearing this, Chi Jingyan finally relaxed slightly.
Professor Chen continued, “As for her sudden marking of you… it’s possible your pheromones also affected her.”
“This is a common occurrence between Alphas and Omegas. Pheromone leakage from an Alpha in rut can very likely trigger an Omega’s heat.”
Especially given how high their compatibility was being influenced was only natural.
Chi Jingyan’s expression remained tense. “Her behavior didn’t seem like she was affected at all.”
“Perhaps she’s just exceptionally good at holding back?” Professor Chen refused to believe Jiang Mengyu hadn’t been affected.
The effects of pheromones were mutual. If Chi Jingyan had been tempted multiple times to mark Jiang Mengyu, how could Jiang Mengyu have felt nothing?
Chi Jingyan fell silent.
Earlier that morning, when she discovered she’d been marked, rage had clouded her judgment. She hadn’t even checked the surveillance footage from the night before before lashing out at Jiang Mengyu and sending her away.
While waiting for Secretary Zhao and Professor Chen to arrive, Chi Jingyan had forced herself to suppress her anger and reviewed the surveillance playback.
It had indeed been her who made the first move.
If Jiang Mengyu hadn’t marked her at the last moment, perhaps she would have been the one marking Jiang Mengyu instead.
Perhaps Professor Chen had a point, but Chi Jingyan knew that Jiang Mengyu had been far more clear-headed than her at the time.
Couldn’t she have just pushed her away?
Professor Chen studied Chi Jingyan’s expression and, seeing her still looking sullen, tentatively suggested, “Miss, if you’re uneasy, why not hand her over to me?”
Chi Jingyan shot him a sidelong glance and said nothing.
Secretary Zhao, standing nearby, couldn’t help but recall the scene he had witnessed earlier, a deep bullet hole in the kitchen wall.
Was the young mistress planning to eliminate Jiang Mengyu for good?
Just as he was thinking this, Chi Jingyan’s cold voice suddenly cut through the air. “That would be letting her off too easily.”
Her expression was icy and brooding. “We’ll talk after the estrus period is over.”
Jiang Mengyu had already temporarily marked her. No matter how unwilling Chi Jingyan was, she couldn’t change that fact. Rather than handing Jiang Mengyu over to Professor Chen, it was better to keep her by her side just treat her as a tool to get through the estrus period.
Secretary Zhao was somewhat surprised. Given how furious the young mistress seemed, he had assumed she would simply abandon Jiang Mengyu.
It seemed that from the very beginning, the young mistress had harbored an inexplicable leniency toward Jiang Mengyu, tolerating all her reckless behavior.
Secretary Zhao didn’t dare dwell on it. After confirming that Chi Jingyan was physically fine, he left with Professor Chen.
Before leaving, Professor Chen cast a few regretful glances at Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu wasn’t particularly surprised by this. What did catch her attention was the meaningful look in Secretary Zhao’s eyes as he regarded her.
“You…” Secretary Zhao seemed to want to say something, but he had barely uttered a single word when Chi Jingyan’s voice rang out from inside the room.
“Get in here already.”
Her tone was thick with impatience.
It was obvious who she was referring to.
Secretary Zhao sighed. “You’d better go in.”
He didn’t seem to have the standing to say much. Though the young mistress was young, she was shrewd. He was just an employee, it wasn’t his place to interfere too much in his boss’s affairs.
Jiang Mengyu stood up. When she re-entered the room, Chi Jingyan was still sitting on the living room sofa, glaring at her with a dark expression.
“Ayan,” Jiang Mengyu stepped closer to her. “How are you feeling?”
“Hmph.” Chi Jingyan let out a cold laugh, ignoring the question and firing back, “Didn’t I tell you to get lost? Who said you could stay by the door?”
Jiang Mengyu didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she knelt in front of Chi Jingyan and looked up at her, speaking softly. “I have nowhere else to go.”
After following Chi Jingyan here, Jiang Mengyu had already given up her small rented apartment.
Chi Jingyan stared down at the person at her feet. Jiang Mengyu was behaving obediently now this was the same act she had used to deceive her, lulling her into lowering her guard.
“Last night,” Chi Jingyan studied her for a long moment before abruptly asking, “did you use your pheromones to control me?”
Jiang Mengyu met her gaze unflinchingly. “No.”
Chi Jingyan fell silent again, her eyes flickering with something inscrutable as she scrutinized Jiang Mengyu’s face, somewhere between scrutiny and suspicion.
A long time passed before Jiang Mengyu heard Chi Jingyan say in a low voice, “You’d better not have.”
Jiang Mengyu pressed her lips together slightly, her gaze unwavering as she looked at Chi Jingyan.
“Ayan, are you still going to send me away?”
