The Cannon Fodder Became the Empire's Beloved Omega - Chapter 22
It was a bit awkward.
Not for any other reason, but because the person speaking turned out to be Gu Yu.
Yu Ruan quietly glanced in the direction of the voice. The argument had just reached its most intense point. A handsome young man, his face flushed with anger, was tugging at Gu Yu’s collar, saying, “You can’t treat Uncle Gu like this!”
Gu Yu pulled his hand away. “I suggest you mind your own business and stay out of the Gu family’s affairs.”
As he said this, Gu Yu’s tone was indifferent, his expression seemingly disinterested. This only fueled the other person’s fury, making him grit his teeth so hard it seemed they might shatter.
After restraining himself for a moment, the other person slammed his fist against the wall in frustration, as if exasperated by Gu Yu’s lack of response, then turned and stormed off.
Yu Ruan quickly averted his gaze.
He never expected that getting lost would lead him straight into someone else’s family drama, and with an acquaintance, no less. Now, he couldn’t decide whether to stay or leave. All he could do was stand there quietly, silently repeating to himself that he was just a blade of grass, hoping no one would notice him.
It was really awkward.
While Yu Ruan was lost in his self-hypnosis, the young man who had just argued with Gu Yu passed by on a nearby path. Yu Ruan quickly stepped back a little further, watching the other’s figure disappear into the distance before finally relaxing and stepping forward again.
After all that, Yu Ruan felt too embarrassed to ask Gu Yu for directions. Having just argued with a family member, Gu Yu was probably in a bad mood, and Yu Ruan didn’t want to add to his troubles.
He opened his light brain, intending to study the map on his own, when he caught sight of an ID card out of the corner of his eye.
The card lay on the ground, reflecting a faint glimmer of light. Curious, Yu Ruan walked over, picked it up, and saw the name “Jiang Ye” printed in the ID section, with a photo of the young man from earlier.
Had he dropped his student card?
Yu Ruan was momentarily puzzled, then instinctively turned to look for the young man’s figure.
Not far away, the young man in the dark blue school uniform had just reached a grove of trees and was about to leave. Seeing this, Yu Ruan quickly called out and ran toward him.
Hearing the call, Jiang Ye paused and turned to look in Yu Ruan’s direction.
He turned around, his voice slightly stiff as he regarded the breathless Yu Ruan. “Can I help you?”
“Your, um, thing.” The sprint had left Yu Ruan’s face slightly pale. He handed over the ID card and said, “This is your student card, right?”
Jiang Ye took the card, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes. He nodded, his tone softening slightly. “It is mine. I didn’t expect to have dropped it here. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Yu Ruan smiled at him, then remembered that the other was also a student at Xingyun Academy and couldn’t help but ask, “Excuse me, could you give me directions?”
“Directions?”
“Mm-hmm.” Yu Ruan said sheepishly, “I was trying to get to the Sky Garden, but I think I took a wrong turn.So I wanted to ask someone for directions to avoid causing any trouble.”
Was he here at Xingyun to look for a relative?
A faint scent of inhibitors drifted over with the breeze, and Jiang Ye immediately recognized the identity of the person before him. He looked at the pretty Omega in front of him, a hint of curiosity surfacing in his heart.
But he didn’t voice it. Instead, he pointed Yu Ruan in the right direction. “Follow this path all the way to the end, and you’ll find the place you’re looking for.”
After speaking, he pursed his lips and added, “If you’re here to find someone, please be careful. There are a lot of Alphas here, and if anything unexpected happens, it’s hard to guarantee your safety.”
Yu Ruan blinked and obediently nodded. “Okay, thank you.”
Although he wasn’t sure what the other person had misunderstood, Yu Ruan could still recognize genuine kindness. He thanked the young man named Jiang Ye and followed the directions he had been given.
Sure enough, he ended up back where he started.
Yu Ruan sighed softly.
He had thought he’d misread the map, but it turned out he had overthought things.
Resigned, Yu Ruan walked to the entrance to discuss the registration issue with the robot, thinking to himself: Thank goodness I talked to Yi Tu yesterday and managed to persuade him not to send anyone along. Otherwise, today would have been incredibly embarrassing.
After finishing the registration, he entered the building, intending to retrieve his luggage from the storage lockers.
To his surprise, as soon as he stepped into the dormitory lobby, he spotted Gu Yu standing in front of the elevator.
The top button of his shirt was half-undone, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He stood lazily in front of the elevator, one hand hooked in his pants pocket, his gaze drifting in Yu Ruan’s direction.
Remembering their previous encounter, Yu Ruan felt a little awkward. He offered a faint smile and prepared to walk past Gu Yu to retrieve his luggage.
Unexpectedly, Gu Yu strode directly toward him.
“Need help?” Gu Yu asked.
“Ah! No, no,” Yu Ruan quickly refused. “My things have already been shipped over. I just need to pick them up. It’s really simple, no need to trouble you.”
Gu Yu lifted his eyes. “Do you know where the storage lockers are?”
Yu Ruan: “…” QAQ No, I don’t.
“Come here.”
“Okay.”
Gu Yu led him across the lobby to a screen, tapped it a few times, and motioned for Yu Ruan to enter his information. Yu Ruan obediently stepped forward and carefully input his details. Finally, a pure white robot emerged from the wall, looking very similar to the one in Gu Yu’s room.
“Personal assistant. Everyone gets one,” Gu Yu said flatly.
Yu Ruan nodded gratefully. If not for Gu Yu, he would have had a hard time finding it.
What a lifesaver!
“Do you know where you’re staying?” Gu Yu asked again.
This time, Yu Ruan was honest. “No.”
Gu Yu glanced at him sideways. For some reason, Yu Ruan thought he detected a hint of amusement in his eyes, but the emotion vanished almost instantly, replaced by an unreadable, deep blue.
“I’ll take you there,” he said.
“Okay.”
The two of them walked into the elevator one after the other. Since Yu Ruan had been here once before, he was already somewhat familiar with the place. As the elevator slowly ascended, a faint sense of foreboding began to creep into his heart.
Could it be?
With a soft “ding,” the elevator stopped. Gu Yu stepped out calmly, pulling Yu Ruan along with him. “There are only four rooms here,” he said evenly. “The other three are occupied. You’re the last one.”
They turned a corner, and Gu Yu stopped in front of his own room, pointing to the door opposite. “Yours.”
Yu Ruan: “…” Just as I thought!
This connection really was unbreakable.
Yu Ruan thought for a moment, unsure what kind of “neighborly remarks” he should make under the circumstances.
After being stuck for a long moment, he could only nod politely at Gu Yu and say, “Thank you for your help.”
“You’re welcome.”
Yu Ruan then went to open the door.
Just then, a distant call suddenly drifted over: “Hey, Gu Yu!”
Yu Ruan instinctively turned to look and saw a familiar face—it was actually the Alpha who had come over for a free meal the last time he visited Gu Yu.
Could it be that he was also a student living in this building?
Yu Ruan couldn’t help but wonder.
After greeting them, the other person noticed Yu Ruan standing beside Gu Yu, and his smile instantly widened. He walked over a few steps and said cheerfully, “What a coincidence, you’re here too? What, here to see your Gu-gege again?”
Gu, Gu-gege.
Yu Ruan nearly choked on the address and couldn’t resist stealing a glance at Gu Yu.
Gu Yu’s expression was cold, clearly displeased to see the other person here. This calmed Yu Ruan down a bit, and he explained to the newcomer, “No, you’ve misunderstood. I just happen to live across from Gu Yu, so?”
He thought for a moment and changed the subject directly: “My name is Yu Ruan. Nice to meet you. Are you also a roommate living here?”
Hearing this, Cheng Mu was dumbfounded. He stared incredulously at the Omega in front of him, scanning him up and down, and froze in place. ??
Had he heard correctly?
The little heir who had caused such a stir at school, rumored to be spoiled, willful, and difficult—was this the person in front of him?
Only now did Cheng Mu truly understand what it meant when people said rumors couldn’t be trusted.
The rumors about this mysterious heir had spread like wildfire at Star Cloud. Supposedly, he had a terrible temper, no manners, and was arrogant and domineering—it was practically a collection of the worst traits imaginable, as if someone had gathered every possible flaw an Omega could have and piled them all onto him.
But the person he knew was adorable, considerate, and exceptionally well-spoken, sweet enough to melt anyone’s heart. If it weren’t for Gu Yu being in the picture, he wouldn’t hesitate to pursue him.
Those bastards spreading nonsense!
Cheng Mu thought indignantly. After a moment, he suppressed his anger and smiled, “Yes, yes, I live here too. My name is Cheng Mu. From now on, we’re all friends under the same roof. If anyone ever bullies you, Ruanruan, just come to me. Your gege will definitely help you get revenge.”
What a familiar person.
Yu Ruan nodded somewhat uncomfortably. “Okay, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Cheng Mu grinned at him.
As they spoke, the roaring sound of a motorcycle echoed from downstairs. Cheng Mu’s eyes lit up at the noise, and he craned his neck, calling out loudly toward the lower floor, “Sister Han Ran, you’re back just in time! Hurry, hurry, come to the third floor. I want to introduce you to a little friend!”
Yu Ruan looked bewildered and followed the sound of his voice to glance downstairs. He saw a woman in black leather pants swing her leg off the motorcycle. She had big, wavy hair, red lips, and was wearing red high heels, along with a short, bright red vest. A teardrop mole adorned the corner of her eye, giving her a bold and striking appearance.
Hearing Cheng Mu, she removed her helmet and looked up toward the balcony, her eyes meeting Yu Ruan’s.
“What’s up?” she asked from afar.
“Hurry up and come up,” Cheng Mu urged.
Han Ran didn’t ask any more questions but raised an eyebrow before her figure disappeared downstairs.
“The last room out of the four, and the boss lady around here,” Cheng Mu explained to Yu Ruan, teasingly adding, “That lazybones Gu Yu definitely didn’t introduce you to any of the neighbors, did he? Honestly, he’s just—”
Gu Yu lifted his eyelids and shot him a bland, unimpressed look.
Cheng Mu’s voice abruptly cut off.
“Right.”
For a moment, the scene was rather comical.
Yu Ruan felt the urge to laugh but held back, not wanting to embarrass Cheng Mu further. Just then, Han Ran stepped out of the elevator and walked toward the group.
“Ran Jie!” Cheng Mu called out to her.
Han Ran didn’t respond.
Her gaze swept past Cheng Mu and landed on Yu Ruan. After a moment, she raised an eyebrow. “Omega?”
Yu Ruan nodded.
“Don’t wander around,” Han Ran said curtly. “There are a lot of Alphas around here. You get it, right? Make sure you take your suppressants. If something happens, you’ll be the one crying.”
Cheng Mu awkwardly rubbed his nose. “Ran Jie, you’ve got it wrong.”
“Huh?”
“He’s our new roommate,” Cheng Mu clarified.
Yu Ruan quickly greeted her, “Hello, I’m Yu Ruan, the new resident who just moved in. I look forward to your guidance.”
It was as if his words had flipped a switch. The moment he finished speaking, Yu Ruan noticed Han Ran’s expression shift, her brows suddenly furrowing.
