- Chapter 3 - The Vase Beauty (Part 3)
Bo Shuyi had not slept this soundly in a very long time. When she woke up, her body felt soft and relaxed. Pressing her fair cheek against the pillow, she let out a gentle yawn. Her eyes were half-laced with sleep, and her thick eyelashes were damp with moisture.
“Mm,” she murmured. The bed beneath her felt excessively soft; it did not seem like her own. Where was she?
Bo Shuyi opened her eyes and pushed herself up with her arms. As the thin quilt slipped down, she felt a slight chill. She glanced down, pulled the quilt back up to her shoulders, and finally remembered the events of last night.
Feeling bored, she had agreed to go to a dinner party with Ding Cheng. In reality, she had arranged for bodyguards to wait outside the private room. The moment she left, Zhang Haisheng was supposed to be given a severe beating.
However, there had been a hitch in the plan, and she ended up being rescued by a girl.
Although she had feigned drunkenness the entire night and had not seen the girl’s face clearly, the girl’s soft, sweet voice and adorable behavior had piqued Bo Shuyi’s interest and boosted her favorable impression of her.
For the first time in years, she had met someone so interesting. Life did not seem so boring anymore.
Bo Shuyi remembered that after the girl left last night, she had returned with her own quilt because she was afraid of the dark and wanted to sleep together. Now, Bo Shuyi was the only one in the bed. Where did she go?
The bathroom door pushed open, and a cloud of white steam billowed out. Lin Nanyun stepped out from the mist. Her hair was wet, and her facial features were delicate and soft. Her white bathrobe was practically duller than her pale skin. Her small, bare feet stepped onto the carpet, leaving behind patches of wet footprints.
“You’re awake!” Seeing Bo Shuyi sitting up in the large bed, Lin Nanyun ran over in pleasant surprise and sat by the edge of the bed.
Bo Shuyi’s dark eyes glistened with a dazed expression. “Who are you? Why am I here?” As she spoke, she nervously pulled the quilt tighter around herself.
In Lin Nanyun’s heart, Bo Shuyi was like a crystal flower that needed careful protection: innocent and pitiable. Seeing Bo Shuyi’s snowy, slender shoulder exposed, Lin Nanyun waved her hands apologetically. “Don’t be afraid! My name is Lin Nanyun. I’m not a bad person. And I was not the one who took your clothes off.”
Bo Shuyi nearly burst out laughing.
She had taken her own clothes off because they were uncomfortable to sleep in; of course, it was not the girl in front of her. The way she explained herself was so cute that Bo Shuyi wanted to keep teasing her.
“Lin Nanyun? I don’t know you. Why am I here?”
Lin Nanyun felt bashful under Bo Shuyi’s watery gaze. She turned her head, and a hint of red appeared on her ear through her wet black hair. She took a deep breath, turned back, and explained earnestly, “You don’t know me, but I know you. I am your fan. At the dinner party you attended yesterday, those men were no good. They were trying to get you drunk on purpose. I happened to be passing by, so I rescued you.”
“This is the Louis Hotel. I did not know where you lived, so I brought you here for the night.”
“Who took you to that party yesterday? Do you have any idea how dangerous it is for you to be drunk?” Lin Nanyun added, her tone full of disapproval for the situation.
Bo Shuyi frowned and said softly, “My manager took me there. I thought it was just an ordinary dinner; I did not expect.” Her body gave a slight, fearful shudder.
Seeing Bo Shuyi looked frightened, Lin Nanyun quickly comforted her. “Don’t be afraid, it is over now. I saved you, did I not? But your current manager is far too unreliable. You have to replace him.”
“Nanyun, can I call you that?” Bo Shuyi looked at her with a heart-wrenching expression.
Hearing her name spoken by the great beauty made it sound exceptionally melodious. Lin Nanyun touched her warm cheek with the back of her hand and replied, “Of course you can.”
“But my manager, Ding Cheng, was assigned to me by the company. I have very little influence right now; I am afraid the company will not listen to me.”
Bo Shuyi looked so helpless that Lin Nanyun could not help but grab her hand. “Don’t be afraid, I will help you!”
The temperature of Lin Nanyun’s hand was just as warm as it had been last night. Bo Shuyi usually disliked being touched, but for some reason, she did not pull away.
She shook her head and gave a faint, ethereal smile that seemed veiled in mist. “I am already so grateful for what you did last night. I should handle this myself. You do not know; the company I am signed to, Xingshan Media, is incredibly famous in the industry. For people like us to resist such a giant would be like an ant trying to shake a tree. It is a waste of effort.”
Lin Nanyun’s eyes widened. “You’re a signed artist with Xingshan Media?”
Her current identity was the youngest daughter of Lin Xingshan, the boss of Xingshan Media: the Little Princess of Xingshan who reportedly owned 3.5% of the company’s shares. Helping Bo Shuyi change managers would be incredibly simple.
“Yes. You have probably heard of it; Xingshan Media is a giant, even people outside the industry know them. My contract expires in half a year, and the company has not shown any intention of renewing it. They will not change my manager for me. But don’t worry, I will be on guard against Ding Cheng from now on. I will not go to any more dinner parties.”
Bo Shuyi turned the tables to comfort Lin Nanyun instead.
Lin Nanyun smiled. “It is even better that you are with Xingshan Media. I happen to be a shareholder. I will help you get rid of Ding Cheng in a bit. As for the renewal, do you want to stay with the company?”
Bo Shuyi stared at her blankly, seemingly unable to believe it. “Stop joking. How could you be a shareholder of Xingshan Media?”
So this little cutie has such a background, Bo Shuyi thought. No wonder she dared to snatch me from Zhang Haisheng with ten bodyguards last night.
Lin Nanyun tilted her head with a cute smile. “The boss of Xingshan Media is named Lin, and my surname is Lin. Why is it impossible?”
In her surprise, Bo Shuyi let go of her right hand, and the quilt suddenly slid halfway down. A flash of snowy white passed before Lin Nanyun’s eyes.
Facing the curves of Bo Shuyi’s chest directly, Lin Nanyun froze for a moment. Realizing what was happening, she immediately let go of Bo Shuyi’s left hand, her face turning crimson as she pulled the quilt back up.
“It is getting late. You must be hungry. I will call room service. You should get dressed and freshen up first.” Lin Nanyun turned around and ran out, clutching her burning cheeks.
Bo Shuyi watched her flustered figure disappear behind the door and let out a light chuckle.
She had originally thought Lin Nanyun might have other motives, and since she liked the girl, she had tested her a little. Since they were both women, Bo Shuyi had not expected Lin Nanyun to be so easily embarrassed.
What should I do? I think I like her even more now.
On the other side, Lin Nanyun, having used an excuse to hide outside out of embarrassment, was so flustered that even her voice trembled while calling room service.
Even though we are both women, not all women are the same. Especially since Bo Shuyi’s figure is so good.
Lin Nanyun collapsed onto the sofa, covering her face. Even when she closed her eyes, that scene kept flickering in her mind, and her heart thumped wildly.
[Host, 199 provides a sincere reminder: there is really no need for your heart to race. Bo Shuyi reveals more when she wears an evening gown.] Sigh, humans are so inexperienced.
Lin Nanyun: “An evening gown is different! You would not understand the thrill of this kind of half-hidden, half-revealed situation.”
[Fine. Human cognitive rules are more complex than I imagined.]
[Host, you have successfully rescued Bo Shuyi. Next, you must protect her, help her find her value in life, and ensure she lives a happy and joyful life. Do you have any ideas?]
Lin Nanyun fanned her burning cheeks with her hands, trying to cool down.
Lin Nanyun: “When Bo Shuyi mentioned Xingshan Media not offering a renewal, she seemed quite dejected. She must really like her identity as an actress.”
Lin Nanyun: “But I will have to ask her personally for her specific thoughts. Whatever she wants to do in the future, I will do my best to help her.”
Room service arrived, and the waiter laid out a rich, exquisite breakfast on the dining table. Lin Nanyun went to the bedroom to see why Bo Shuyi had not come out yet, only to walk right into Bo Shuyi’s arms as she opened the door.
Bo Shuyi reached out to steady her by the waist. “Careful.”
Once Lin Nanyun was steady, Bo Shuyi let go.
Lin Nanyun still felt a bit shy seeing her. She whispered, “I came to call you for breakfast.”
“Thank you, Nanyun.” Bo Shuyi’s voice was melodious with a hint of huskiness, full of rhythm and very pleasant to the ear.
“You’re welcome,” Lin Nanyun replied softly. Not daring to meet Bo Shuyi’s shimmering dark eyes, she kept her gaze level with the other woman’s exquisite chin.
Lin Nanyun was 160 cm tall, while Bo Shuyi was around 170 cm. Last night, Lin Nanyun had been wearing nine-centimeter heels to match her height, but now in flat slippers, her eyes only reached Bo Shuyi’s chin. When Bo Shuyi had held her just now, they were pressed close together: a perfect fit, likely due to the height difference.
Bo Shuyi had spent a little time in the room calling Lin Jiu to confirm Zhang Haisheng’s current situation. Lin Jiu had asked if she wanted to deal with Ding Cheng as well, but thinking of Lin Nanyun’s offer to help, she told Lin Jiu to leave him be.
It seemed it would be more satisfying to let Lin Nanyun handle him for her.
The two sat at the dining table. Seeing it covered in various breakfast dishes, Bo Shuyi said in surprise, “Why did you order so much?”
Lin Nanyun explained awkwardly, “I forgot to ask what you like, so I ordered a bit of everything. It is okay; I have a big appetite. After you eat what you like, I will finish the rest. It will not go to waste.” At the time, she had been too nervous to go into the bedroom to ask.
As they ate, Lin Nanyun asked, “Which ones do you like? I’ll move them to your side.”
Bo Shuyi said, “No need. What if I like the same things you do? Then you would not get to eat them.”
Lin Nanyun thought to herself: Bo Shuyi really is a kind little angel. She would even give up food she likes for others; she does not think of herself at all.
Lin Nanyun was so moved by her own assumptions that her eyes welled up.
“I am not a picky eater, I love everything. There is no information about your hobbies online. I am your fan, after all; fans should at least know what you like to eat.”
Seeing Lin Nanyun’s persistence, Bo Shuyi picked out a few items she liked.
Lin Nanyun placed them in front of her, saying happily, “That is how it should be! You have to speak up about what you like so you do not miss out.”
Bo Shuyi replied, “Even if you speak up, you will not necessarily get it.”
Lin Nanyun disagreed. “If you speak up, there is a possibility. If you do not, there is no chance at all.”
“You are so beautiful, why are your thoughts so pessimistic? Do you know that with your looks and personality, no matter what you want, people would scramble to bring it to you just to see you smile?”
Bo Shuyi had experienced more malice than kindness in the entertainment industry. For a Vase Beauty, the emphasis was not on Beauty but on being a Vase: a useless decoration. Many used that label to attack her, inventing flaws even when they could not find any.
Bo Shuyi smiled at Lin Nanyun, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
Lin Nanyun insisted, “I am telling the truth. You are really beautiful. I have never seen a woman more beautiful than you.”
Bo Shuyi: “…” The praise was so high that she felt genuinely flustered for the first time.
“Nanyun, let us stop talking about my appearance. Let us talk about something else.”
Lin Nanyun nodded readily. “Okay!”
Looking at Lin Nanyun’s suddenly sparkling eyes, Bo Shuyi felt like she had just dug a hole for herself.
Lin Nanyun ate quickly, and talking did not slow her down. Soon, she had finished half the dishes on the table. Bo Shuyi, however, was leaning lazily on her arm, eating slowly and elegantly.
Watching Bo Shuyi eat, Lin Nanyun’s own movements unconsciously slowed down.
“Shuyi, do you have any plans for the future?”
Bo Shuyi was eating a soup dumpling. She looked up at Lin Nanyun in confusion, not quite understanding the question.
Lin Nanyun put down her chopsticks and rested her arms on the table. “I mean, what do you like to do? What kind of work do you want to do later?”
“If you like being an actress, should I have someone talk to you about a contract renewal?” Lin Nanyun asked expectantly.
Bo Shuyi finished her dumpling and, feeling mostly full, set down her chopsticks. She frowned slightly. “Thank you, Nanyun, but there is no need.”
Lin Nanyun did not expect to be rejected. “Why? I thought you liked acting. And if you stop, it would be a total loss for the industry.”
Seeing how much Lin Nanyun wanted her to stay an actress, Bo Shuyi suddenly felt like teasing her.
“Did you not ask what I want to do in the future?” Bo Shuyi bit her lower lip gently, leaving a faint tooth mark on the red flesh. Her eyelashes trembled as she looked down, a faint blush staining her pale cheeks. She whispered with a hint of shame, “Actually, I do not like working. I hope that in the future, someone very powerful can support me and provide for my needs. Am I too lacking in ambition?”
“Huh?” Lin Nanyun was stunned.
Bo Shuyi wants to be a caged canary in the future?
Lin Nanyun: “199, what do I do? How could Bo Shuyi want to be a canary?”
[It is not impossible. If Bo Shuyi likes being supported, then in the original plot, her suicide was likely because Lin Dongting’s fiancée brought reporters to catch them and leaked her photos, ruining her comfortable life. Host, you can complete the mission by helping her find a loyal, wealthy benefactor.]
Lin Nanyun: “You cannot judge a book by its cover. Lin Dongting looked tall, handsome, and devoted, yet he kept Bo Shuyi on the side while still clinging to his fiancée. Men are visual creatures; they always want more beautiful women. 199, I feel like I cannot complete this mission.”
Lin Nanyun: “Bo Shuyi is so wonderful, why does she have to be kept by some smelly man?”
[Host, it does not have to be a man. You could find a woman to support her.]
Lin Nanyun: “Are you serious? But Bo Shuyi does not seem like she would like women.”
[Why don’t you just ask? Everything we say now is just speculation. It is better to ask directly.]
Lin Nanyun: “I will try. But sexual orientation is so private, she might not tell me.”
Bo Shuyi rested her chin on her hand, watching the shifting expressions on Lin Nanyun’s face. She wondered if it was too late to take back what she had just said.
“Nanyun,” she began.
“Shuyi, do you like men or women? I mean, for the person who would support you.” Lin Nanyun waited for the answer with a mix of excitement and anxiety.
Meeting Lin Nanyun’s expectant gaze, Bo Shuyi said impulsively, “Either is fine.”
Lin Nanyun: “199! Shuyi can actually accept women!”
Lin Nanyun: “But a reliable woman is also hard to find. This is tough.”
[If all else fails, you do it yourself.]
Lin Nanyun: “…”
[Just kidding, just kidding.]
System 199’s stable persona was crumbling.
After breakfast, Lin Nanyun drove Bo Shuyi home. Bo Shuyi invited her in for tea, but Lin Nanyun, preoccupied with the task of screening potential partners for her, declined.
Bo Shuyi watched Lin Nanyun return to her car. Within two seconds, Lin Nanyun hopped back out and ran to Bo Shuyi, holding up her phone. “I almost forgot to add you on WeChat!”
After adding her, Lin Nanyun said, “I will ask you out to hang out sometime.”
Bo Shuyi looked at her with a hint of reluctance and lowered her eyes. “Okay. I have never really gone out with a friend before.”
Lin Nanyun felt an immediate pang of sympathy. “From now on, I will call you whenever I go out!”
“Shuyi, I am leaving! Let us keep in touch on WeChat!” Lin Nanyun ran a few steps, turned back to give her a big smile, waved vigorously, and got in the car.
“Miss, was that your friend?” Aunt Wang, who had been watering plants on the second-floor balcony, asked as she watched the car drive away.
Bo Shuyi looked up and smiled. “Friend? I suppose so.”
Aunt Wang said warmly, “That is wonderful. Miss finally has a friend! Next time you bring her home, I can prepare a huge feast for you both.”
Bo Shuyi gave a noncommittal response, entered the villa, walked past the foyer, and sat on the sofa.
She made a call to Lin Jiu. “Check someone for me. Lin Nanyun, a shareholder of Xingshan Media.”
Lin Jiu replied immediately, “Lin Nanyun? I recognize that name. Is she not Lin Xingshan’s youngest daughter: the Little Princess of Xingshan Media?”
Bo Shuyi rested her left hand on her leg, her pink-tipped fingers tapping gently against her jeans. “Yes. I want every bit of information on her from childhood until now.”
