- Chapter 2 - The Vase Beauty (Part 2)
Bo Shuyi stood up. Her legs, encased in denim, appeared long and slender. She wore a simple white T-shirt that concealed her delicate waist, while her voluminous, curly hair cascaded over her shoulders. Her neck was thin and long, like a graceful swan.
Even in such a simple outfit, Bo Shuyi was stunning.
However, to those lecherous men, Bo Shuyi’s attire was clearly far too modest. Her shoulders, collarbone, waist, and long legs were all strictly covered by fabric. In their eyes, if she did not show skin, her beauty was useless.
Ding Cheng felt his plea had been sincere enough that Bo Shuyi would not refuse. Seeing her stand up, he assumed she was taking his advice to change. He said happily, “That is more like it! Remember to pick a skirt a bit shorter than the black lace one you wore this morning.”
Bo Shuyi cast a cold glance at him and simply asked, “Are we going or not? If not, I am going upstairs to rest.”
Ding Cheng’s joy lasted less than two seconds before her words choked him into silence. Seeing that he was not moving, Bo Shuyi made a move toward the stairs. Snapping back to reality, Ding Cheng scrambled to his feet. “Going! We are going right now!”
He had already promised Zhang Haisheng. If Bo Shuyi did not show up, not only would the casino debt collectors refuse to let him off, but Zhang Haisheng would likely send people to teach him a lesson. If she would not change her clothes, so be it.
Knowing how stubborn Bo Shuyi could be, Ding Cheng did not say another word. He acted as a dutiful driver, piloting Bo Shuyi’s luxury car toward Jinman Building.
Bo Shuyi sat in the back row, her pale pink fingertips carelessly tapping and scrolling across her phone screen.
Bo Shuyi: Are the people in place?
Lin Jiu: Yes, Miss. I have bribed the lobby manager of Jinman Building. The bodyguards have been disguised as waiters and positioned outside Zhang Haisheng’s private box.
Bo Shuyi tucked her phone away and leaned her elbow lightly against the car window. Watching the flow of traffic outside, she felt a wave of boredom and could not help but close her eyes and yawn. When she slowly opened them, tears blurred her dark pupils, making them appear watery and bright, while her wet lashes looked even thicker and darker.
She thought that it was very boring. She wondered when something interesting would finally happen.
Due to the evening rush hour, it took Ding Cheng an extra twenty minutes to deliver Bo Shuyi to Jinman Building. Fortunately, he had factored in a thirty-minute buffer, so they arrived ten minutes early for the appointment with Zhang Haisheng.
Ding Cheng parked the car in front of the ornate, palatial entrance of the building. He handed the keys to the valet and personally opened the car door for Bo Shuyi. Following her inside, he found a waiter to lead the way. Regardless of whether Bo Shuyi was listening, he nagged as they walked.
“Shuyi, once we enter the box and see Zhang Haisheng, you really cannot be headstrong. Mr. Zhang has a massive business; he has seen all kinds of beauties. The only reason he agreed to arrange a role for you is because he is a fan. Treat this like a fan meeting. Just have a better attitude to make him happy; it is for our own good.”
Finally reaching the door, Bo Shuyi glanced subtly at the surrounding waiters. The men were the bodyguards Lin Jiu had hired, but there was also a woman looking at her with a frown. Bo Shuyi’s gaze swept over An Yu’s face; she was certain she did not know this woman. She assumed it was just another fan.
Ding Cheng stared at the door, his heart pounding with excitement. As long as he got Bo Shuyi through that door, Zhang Haisheng would help him pay off his gambling debt of over two million. He stole a glance at Bo Shuyi, feeling a fleeting moment of pity for her impending fall into Zhang Haisheng’s clutches.
Bo Shuyi was not exactly a pushover, but Ding Cheng was not afraid of her seeking revenge later. He had already coordinated with Zhang Haisheng. Once the deed was done, Zhang Haisheng would take compromising photos of Bo Shuyi and give them to him to keep her under control.
Suppressing his excitement, Ding Cheng knocked three times, pushed the door open, and ushered Bo Shuyi in, following behind her with a face full of fawning smiles.
Caught up in his fantasies, Ding Cheng failed to notice the woman in the cheongsam, An Yu, tugging at Bo Shuyi’s sleeve and shaking her head as she entered. Bo Shuyi gave An Yu a soft smile, a look that flashed with a momentary, captivating charm, but she did not slow her pace. In an instant, she was inside.
An Yu watched Bo Shuyi disappear behind the door, feeling a mix of rage and pity. The rage was for Zhang Haisheng; the pity was for Bo Shuyi. To think the most beautiful woman in the industry was about to be ruined by that greasy man. An Yu wished a Prince Charming would appear to rescue her. Unfortunately, the most powerful person she knew was her cousin, and he, like her, did not dare offend the people inside.
As An Yu stood there despondently, she did not notice the male waiters slowly and inconspicuously closing in on the door.
[Host, our first priority is to prevent Lin Dongting from saving Bo Shuyi from Zhang Haisheng.]
Lin Nanyun was full of confidence. “Got it! Leave the rescue to me. I will definitely finish the task!”
The Lin Nanyun of this world was born with a silver spoon, a typical, willful, and spoiled young miss. To save Bo Shuyi from the lecher Zhang Haisheng, she had hired ten bodyguards, all muscular men in suits, and led them toward Jinman Building in a grand procession.
By the time Lin Nanyun arrived, Bo Shuyi had only been in the room for a short while. When the hotel staff saw her charging in with ten hulking men, they panicked and scrambled to find the lobby manager.
Before coming, Lin Nanyun had changed into her battle dress, a sizzling red off-the-shoulder gown and nine-inch heels. She walked with an air of absolute authority. Though she was secretly nervous, the thought of a weak and pitiful Bo Shuyi waiting to be saved filled her with courage.
[The box at the very end of the hall on the right, upstairs. Bo Shuyi is being forced to drink.]
Hearing this, Lin Nanyun immediately led her guards upstairs. The lobby manager spotted the group and rushed to intercept them, sweating profusely. To him, this looked like a legal wife coming to catch a cheating husband. If the bodyguards got out of hand, the hotel would be liable.
He managed to squeeze through the guards to Lin Nanyun’s side just as she reached the door. “Madam,” he stopped, realizing how young she was. “Miss, fighting is prohibited here. Let us talk this out; do not be impulsive.”
Lin Nanyun replied, “Do not worry, I am just here to take someone away. I will not do anything illegal.”
The manager looked at the ten massive men behind her, highly skeptical. Before he could say another word, Lin Nanyun reached out and shoved the door open.
Inside the box, Zhang Haisheng stared at Bo Shuyi’s enchanting face and swallowed hard. He stood up. “Miss Bo, please, sit here!”
Receiving Zhang Haisheng’s signal, Ding Cheng immediately guided Bo Shuyi to the seat next to him. “Shuyi, this is the Mr. Zhang Haisheng I mentioned. Mr. Zhang is a big fan of yours.”
Bo Shuyi smiled without a word and compliantly sat down.
“Miss Bo, I have watched all your dramas. You acted so well! It is outrageous that people call you a ‘Vase Beauty,'” Zhang Haisheng blustered, before raising a glass with a wide grin. “I never expected to see you in person. You are even more beautiful than on television. Come, a toast!” He downed the red wine in his glass.
Bo Shuyi did not move. Ding Cheng anxiously shoved a glass into her hand. “Shuyi, Mr. Zhang is an investor for The Order of Chaoyang. Since he toasted you, should you not have a drink?”
Bo Shuyi swirled the glass gently, frowning with worry. “My tolerance is not very high. If I get drunk, you have to make sure I get home safely.”
Ding Cheng promised instantly, “Of course! I will definitely get you back safely!”
Bo Shuyi glanced at Zhang Haisheng, hesitated, and then, under his expectant gaze, drank the wine. A mist quickly covered her dark eyes, making her look as though she could not handle her liquor at all.
Zhang Haisheng chuckled, patted his belly, and signaled to a man in glasses and a balding man. Both stood up to toast her. Bo Shuyi furrowed her brows, her eyes hazy. She leaned her head on her hand and murmured, “I cannot drink any more.”
But they would not let her off. With Ding Cheng’s help, they forced another two glasses down her. A light flush crept onto Bo Shuyi’s snow-white cheeks. Her eyes half-closed, she leaned against the table and mumbled incoherently. She was clearly drunk.
Zhang Haisheng was overjoyed. He rubbed his hands together and asked Ding Cheng, “Drunk already? Such a small tolerance?”
Ding Cheng nodded flatteringly. “When Director Wei was alive, Shuyi never touched a drop. Today is her first time. Mr. Zhang, you are in luck tonight.”
Though Bo Shuyi was signed to a company, she had not had a proper manager before; Wei Chunze had handled everything personally. Ding Cheng had only been assigned to her after the death of Wei and did not know her well. He did not know that when Bo Shuyi first drank at sixteen, she discovered she was practically immune to alcohol. Wei Chunze had forbidden her from drinking simply to prevent her from becoming a heavy drinker.
In reality, Bo Shuyi’s tolerance was legendary. Being drunk after three glasses was entirely an act. Without it, the next part of her plan could not happen. She had already instructed her bodyguards that the moment she was taken out of the box, no matter who was helping her, they were to give Zhang Haisheng a brutal beating.
The bodyguards would leave after the beating, and as for her, she had her own ways of escaping.
Zhang Haisheng told the other two men, “Weren’t you two heading to that new club on Guanghua Street? Whatever you spend today, I will reimburse it.” He could not wait to take Bo Shuyi to the five-star hotel next door.
As he basked in their flattery, a mocking curve touched the corner of Bo Shuyi’s lips. A beating was not enough for someone like Zhang Haisheng; he needed to lose his ability to offend forever.
“Click!”
The door was suddenly thrown open. All four men looked over in shock. A girl in a bright red dress and high heels stormed in. Though she lacked Bo Shuyi’s seasoned charm, her beauty was easily on par.
Lin Nanyun’s eyes swept over the room full of hideous men. Seeing the slumped Bo Shuyi, she rushed to her side to help her up.
Ding Cheng snapped out of it and blocked her. “Who are you? What do you think you are doing!”
Lin Nanyun’s ten bodyguards filed in. Without a word from her, they picked up Ding Cheng, Zhang Haisheng, and the others like small animals and shoved them into a corner.
Lin Nanyun gently stroked Bo Shuyi’s soft hair and whispered, “Do not be afraid. I am here to save you.”
Bo Shuyi’s closed eyelids fluttered. The warmth from Lin Nanyun’s hand seemed to travel through her hair straight to her heart. It was a full, warm sensation she had not felt in a long time, something novel and oddly addictive.
She felt Lin Nanyun lift her gently, her movements as careful as if she were handling fragile glass. Bo Shuyi stood unsteadily, leaning against the slender body, her nose filled with the girl’s fresh, sweet scent.
Despite her height and the nine-inch heels, Lin Nanyun managed to support the thin Bo Shuyi toward the exit. She held Bo Shuyi by the waist, and they walked out surrounded by the protective circle of ten bodyguards. The group left with just as much intimidating momentum as they had arrived with.
“So cool!” An Yu’s voice snapped the lobby manager out of his daze.
He rushed into the box, relieved to see that although the four men had ruffled clothes, they were not injured. He began to apologize and offer comfort, only to be met with a barrage of curses from a recovering Zhang Haisheng.
An Yu, thrilled that her wish had come true, that Bo Shuyi had been rescued by a princess, heard Zhang Haisheng insulting her cousin. She lowered her head and stomped her foot in frustration. “Scum like him should be beaten half to death! It would be best if he could never perform again!”
At that moment, the bodyguards Bo Shuyi had planted received a new order: Wait for Zhang Haisheng to leave Jinman Building, then beat him and destroy his tools of the trade.
Zhang Haisheng, done with his tirade, left the building in a huff. The bodyguards disguised as waiters exchanged looks and followed him out. The other three men, wary of his temper, followed at a distance.
Ding Cheng’s face was dark. He had planned to use Bo Shuyi to win favor, but a little beauty had appeared out of nowhere and snatched her away. Not only was his debt still there, but he had lost his patron. Zhang Haisheng was a proud man; after such an embarrassing scene, he was more likely to take it out on Ding Cheng than help him.
Lost in thought, Ding Cheng walked aimlessly. Passing an alley, he heard the sounds of punching, kicking, and muffled groans, but he ignored it. Days later, when he heard that Zhang Haisheng had been cornered in an alley, beaten, and maimed, he was filled with regret. If he had looked into that alley, he might have been Zhang Haisheng’s savior.
Lin Nanyun did not know Bo Shuyi’s address. She called out to System 199, but there was no response. To avoid running into Lin Dongting, she could not go home, nor could she go to the hotel next to Jinman Building. Instead, she took Bo Shuyi to a different five-star hotel across the city.
With her hands full, she had a bodyguard handle the check-in. Once they reached the presidential suite, she dismissed the guards and took Bo Shuyi inside.
Lin Nanyun carefully laid Bo Shuyi down on the soft bed. Bo Shuyi pretended to wake up just enough to grab Lin Nanyun’s wrist, pulling her down with her. Before Lin Nanyun could react, she was lying right next to Bo Shuyi. Bo Shuyi released her hand and draped her arm over Lin Nanyun’s waist.
Looking at the breathtaking beauty at such close range, Lin Nanyun almost forgot to blink. Bo Shuyi was way too pretty. Her brows were dark, her lashes long and curled, her nose perfectly straight, and her lips were as red as cherries.
Lin Nanyun leaned in, her face barely a centimeter from Bo Shuyi’s. She could smell the faint scent of wine and felt a bit lightheaded herself. She stared at the flawless, pale skin and whispered in awe, “I really cannot see a single pore.”
Bo Shuyi nearly broke character and laughed. She wondered where this treasure came from and why she was this cute.
After finishing her study of Bo Shuyi’s features, Lin Nanyun gently moved the arm from her waist, sat up, and tucked Bo Shuyi in. She planned to sleep in the adjacent room.
Bo Shuyi opened her eyes, her shimmering gaze following Lin Nanyun until the girl reached the door and switched off the light. Feeling uncomfortable in her clothes, Bo Shuyi kicked off her jeans and T-shirt under the covers, unhooked her underwear and set it aside, then closed her eyes to sleep.
In the next room, Lin Nanyun tossed and turned. The heavy curtains blocked out all light, leaving the room in an oppressive silence.
“199? Are you there?”
Still no answer. Lin Nanyun felt a prickle of fear. She could not sleep, her eyes wide as she stared at the dark ceiling. She thought of Bo Shuyi in the next room. She figured that since they were both girls, she should be able to sleep there. She thought Bo Shuyi was so delicate that she might be even more scared if she woke up.
Using this logic as an excuse, she grabbed her quilt and walked to Bo Shuyi’s room by the faint light of her phone.
Bo Shuyi was just drifting off when she heard soft, rustling footsteps. Then, she felt someone climbing onto her bed.
“I am a little scared to sleep alone,” Lin Nanyun’s soft voice whispered in her ear.
As she occupied the space beside her, she added, “And I am a little afraid of the dark.” Lin Nanyun hugged Bo Shuyi’s waist through the covers. “I am glad you are here. Let us sleep together.”
Bo Shuyi thought that the girl was a bit delicate, a bit silly, and very cute. She fell fast asleep shortly after.
