The Black Lotus Omega Always Wraps His Tail Around Me - Chapter 42
When Ji Yanwan returned, the light in their small room was already on.
In the cool night, the warm yellow glow from that lamp felt especially comforting.
Her mood brightened a little, and her steps quickened on the way home.
But the moment she pushed the door open, she realized that Fu Suihe wasn’t alone inside.
Fu Suihe placed the rabbit she had brought back on the table. The little creature was still in a daze, overwhelmed by fear.
Looking at the soft, limp ball of fur lying on the tabletop, Fu Suihe sighed.
She hadn’t expected it to be this easily frightened.
Still, more than that, she was curious about the rabbit’s origins. Was it connected to Fu Leiwu… or perhaps that wolf?
Just the thought made her expression darken.
She felt her own reasoning was ridiculous. Who else would be foolish enough to cozy up to their natural predator just to survive? Who else would endure humiliation like she had?
The memory sent a sting through her wrist.
Fu Suihe snapped back to the present. This wasn’t the cold den of a wolf. It was a warm little cabin. She had been here for a week now.
This cabin, once bare and lifeless, had gradually taken on the warmth of a home under Ji Yanwan’s careful touch. There was a ceramic vase on the table with fresh flowers, and every evening the scent of blossoms filled the air.
A soft carpet covered the floor, the bedding had been replaced with a new set, and a little custom night light sat near the bed.
This temporary home now had a soul. Every small item in the room had some connection to them both.
She had to admit, Ji Yanwan was a thoughtful and tender partner. But Fu Suihe reminded herself that love wasn’t something she needed.
The door creaked open.
Ji Yanwan stepped inside, her smile glowing like sunlight.
Fu Suihe stared at that smile. It was so pure and warm that even the sunflowers in her arms seemed to pale in comparison.
For a brief moment, her resolve wavered. But she quickly crushed that feeling.
Fu Suihe stood up and greeted her with enthusiasm. “Why are you back so late, Jie-jie?”
She reached for the flowers first, then wrapped Ji Yanwan in a big hug. As they embraced, her hand slipped into Ji Yanwan’s pocket.
“What’s this?” Fu Suihe pulled out a card between her fingers.
It was made of black and red cardstock, with delicate embossing that shimmered under the light.
“That’s an invitation to the Zhao family’s banquet,” Ji Yanwan replied honestly.
Fu Suihe made a soft sound and opened it. The interior was just as elegant as the cover. The message inside had been handwritten, and the recipient’s name was listed as Ji Yanwan alone.
Clearly, this was an invitation prepared especially by Zhao Mumu.
Noticing the subtle change in Fu Suihe’s expression, Ji Yanwan explained gently, “These kinds of banquets are mostly for business networking. They’re actually very boring.”
In recent years, the Zhao family had risen quickly. In Jiangcheng, they had already climbed two social classes. Their company’s market value now sat just below the Cheng family.
This kind of move made it clear that the Zhao family intended to break into the circle of the city’s four elite families.
Fu Suihe came back to herself and gave a gentle smile. “Then will you take me with you, Jie-jie?”
Ji Yanwan blinked, a little caught off guard by the question.
“Because I don’t want you to go see her alone,” Fu Suihe said softly. “If you go see her by yourself, I’ll get jealous.”
Under the soft light, her face had a gentle and dreamlike glow. Her eyes especially seemed to draw people in with their quiet intensity.
For a moment, Ji Yanwan felt like she was being pulled into a deep, untraceable vortex.
On the table, the fainted rabbit slowly regained consciousness. Hu Luobei blinked hazily, her thoughts still scattered.
From her angle, she couldn’t see Ji Yanwan’s face clearly. All she could make out were those fox-like eyes.
Her mind, once foggy, cleared in an instant. As soon as it did, she lowered her head quickly.
Foxes were known for their charm. At night, they often acted like helpless creatures to lure in unsuspecting prey, using their appearance—or more often, their eyes.
Hu Luobei couldn’t understand how a wolf could fall for a fox’s spell, or why a fox would dare get so close to a wolf in the first place.
Nothing she saw made sense. All she could do was lower her head as much as possible. After a brief silence, she heard Ji Yanwan quietly say, “Alright.”
In that moment, Hu Luobei suddenly understood where Ji Yanwan’s feelings for Fu Suihe came from.
The night was still.
Beneath the table, the little rabbit curled into herself, waiting for a chance to escape.
After washing up, Zhao Mumu sat alone at her desk.
The document on the computer screen remained untouched. Zhao Mumu brushed the damp ends of her hair aside and let out a quiet sigh.
On the desk were scattered fountain pens, ink, and a pile of ruined invitation drafts she had yet to clean up.
Her phone lit up beside her, but she didn’t look. She waited for the screen to go dark on its own.
Then the ringtone began to ring.
The sound pulled her back from her thoughts. A number she didn’t recognize was calling. Almost as soon as she picked up, the caller spoke in a calm, distant voice.
“Hello.”
“This is Ji Mingtao.”
The exhaustion on Zhao Mumu’s face vanished instantly, replaced by nervous tension. She sat up straighter without thinking and replied in a soft voice, “Hello, Director Ji.”
Ji Mingtao responded with a nonchalant hum, then said, “You’re in the same production as Wanwan, aren’t you?”
Zhao Mumu paused, a little surprised. “Yes.”
Ji Mingtao continued, “This weekend’s banquet at your home. You should attend with Wanwan.”
As she spoke, Zhao Mumu could hear the faint sound of her fingers tapping lightly on a tabletop. Her tone remained light. “The Ji family will be there too.”
Zhao Mumu still didn’t fully understand what she meant. Attend with Wanwan? That thought echoed in her mind, and she finally asked it out loud.
“There’s no invitation for the Cheng family on the guest list,” Ji Mingtao said. “I assume your grandfather and I share the same opinion. Let’s work together.”
“The plot of land in the eastern district. I can offer it as a goodwill gesture for our collaboration. Maybe even more than that.”
Her voice never changed in pitch. That land had been driving up to over thirty thousand per square meter, yet she spoke of it as if she were offering a bag of rice or a few carrots.
Zhao Mumu froze. The room seemed to go completely still. She could hear her heart pounding in her chest.
And then she heard her own voice say, “I don’t want the land in the eastern district. I want the Ji family to cancel the engagement with the Fu family.”
“Or… I want Ji Yanwan.”
As soon as she finished speaking, she held her breath.
Time suddenly slowed.
She heard a soft chuckle on the other end of the line. For the first time, Ji Mingtao’s voice carried a hint of emotion.
“Alright,” she said, “but only if my sister makes that decision herself.”
“If she personally asks to break the engagement, I’ll agree.”
Zhao Mumu gave a quiet reply. “Understood.”
The call ended.
But Zhao Mumu sat frozen, still holding her phone long after the screen went black.
Just now, she didn’t know where her courage had come from. It felt as though the long, rainy season of her youth had finally come to an end.
And the one standing at the finish line, like a reward for all her persistence, was Ji Yanwan.
Suddenly, Zhao Mumu stood up and pushed open the window. Moonlight spread across the floor as she took all those wasted memories and let them go, letting her longing burn freely into the night.
There was no meaning in holding on to the past anymore, she thought.
She would step into the future Ji Yanwan once spoke of and begin again.
