The Black Lotus Omega Always Wraps His Tail Around Me - Chapter 36
The figure came closer and closer.
Ji Yanwan’s consciousness, however, was slowly slipping into confusion.
The freezing cold lake water surged in from all directions. It filled her mouth and lungs, and her breath was gradually stolen by the current.
Just before she lost consciousness completely, a pair of hands reached down and pulled her up.
Every riverside guesthouse in Wuzhen had a warm yellow lantern hanging outside.
Inside each lantern, the soft flame flickered gently behind the white paper shade.
Part of this was tradition. Part of it was practical, helping people walking at night avoid falling into the lake.
It was late at night now. The streets were nearly empty.
If someone looked closely, they might notice that one small lantern was missing from one of the guesthouses.
Inside a clean and tidy single room, a large suitcase sat wide open on the floor. Clothes and belongings were still unpacked. A big carrot rested across the top.
From the doorway, a damp trail had soaked into the carpet. The moisture clung to the cotton fibers and spread across the floor in a strangely ominous way.
But the room’s owner didn’t seem to care. She struggled to carry someone in and laid them on the carpet. Then, exhausted, she collapsed beside them, breathing heavily.
The person lying there had her eyes tightly shut. Her face and lips were frighteningly pale, so much so that at first glance, she looked like a corpse.
The candlelight inside the lantern, now removed from outside, flickered faintly. It gave no warmth.
Soaked through, the girl trembled violently from the cold. She scooted closer to the weak flame and began to strip off her wet clothes with great effort. As she did, she gave a deep, shuddering breath.
As the water droplets scattered outward, the girl’s body began to change. By the time the last drops settled, she had transformed into a snow-white rabbit.
Hu Luobei was freezing. The water temperature at night was barely over ten degrees. For a rabbit whose body temperature stayed around thirty-nine degrees, it was like falling into an icy abyss.
Especially for Hu Luobei, a rabbit spirit who had only just learned how to take human form. Her cultivation was weak.
After shaking off the water, Hu Luobei looked timidly at the unconscious person on the floor, full of confusion.
Why would a wolf be afraid of water?
While she was still dazed, footsteps sounded in the hallway outside.
Startled, Hu Luobei shivered and immediately changed back into her human form.
The footsteps stopped just outside her door. Then came a soft knock.
A moment later, the door was pushed open.
Hu Luobei froze in place, her breath caught, as she watched someone walk into the room. The person who entered also paused in surprise.
For a long moment, their eyes met.
Zhao Mumu stood there in the doorway, frozen in place, staring at the girl in front of her. She couldn’t snap out of it.
She had followed Ji Yanwan off the boat and had heard her retching, which had made her worry. Zhao Mumu searched a few nearby shops before she finally found a vending machine. Just as she turned to buy a bottle of mineral water, Ji Yanwan had vanished.
All she saw was a puddle of water and the drag marks left on the ground.
Clutching the bottle, Zhao Mumu followed the trail, imagining the worst.
But what she saw when she opened the door was completely unexpected.
On the black-and-white carpet, one person lay motionless while another sat next to her, completely unclothed, with a face full of fear.
The girl’s skin was pale and flawless. In the warm, flickering candlelight, she looked like a fine piece of white porcelain.
Her chin-length hair was soaked, and the water streamed down her neck, tracing a path along her delicate frame. Her back was curled slightly, and her elegant shoulder blades trembled gently like the wings of a butterfly about to take flight.
She was small and slender. Sitting with her legs parted slightly, she looked up with wide, innocent red eyes, her childlike face full of hesitation and fear.
Even though she wasn’t wearing anything, there was nothing indecent about her appearance.
Zhao Mumu quickly snapped back to reality and closed the door.
The night air still held a chill. With two wet people inside, the humidity in the room felt heavier.
The flame in the lantern had burned to its end. As Zhao Mumu closed the door, the last flicker of the candle was snuffed out, leaving behind only a thread of pale smoke.
Hu Luobei stared at the beautiful woman who had just burst into the room, her eyes filled with confusion.
Then she heard the woman ask gently, “Did you save her?”
Zhao Mumu looked over at Ji Yanwan, who was still unconscious. Her entire body was wet. The girl in front of her was also dripping. That winding trail of water on the floor must have come from her.
Hu Luobei nodded slowly.
She was freezing. That draft from the open door had made her shiver again. Rabbits might not fear water, but they definitely feared the cold. And now the flame was out. Hu Luobei was certain she was going to freeze to death at this rate.
Seeing the girl still dazed, Zhao Mumu turned toward the bed, pulled down a blanket, and gently offered it to her.
“Aren’t you cold? You didn’t even turn on the heater.”
Hu Luobei looked at her, trying to make sense of her actions.
But she was still new to being human and couldn’t fully understand human behavior. She couldn’t tell what the woman’s intentions were.
Seeing her still frozen in place, Zhao Mumu sighed softly, stepped forward, and wrapped the trembling Hu Luobei in the blanket. Then she turned to find the air conditioner remote.
After she switched it on, she turned back to see Hu Luobei still watching her in the same way.
As the warm air began to fill the room, Zhao Mumu moved quickly to Ji Yanwan’s side.
Ji Yanwan’s lips had turned bluish purple. Her breathing was growing faint.
She had clearly been dragged out of the water and left like this. Zhao Mumu’s heart ached. She gently lifted Ji Yanwan’s eyelids and confirmed that her pupils had not dilated. She immediately began chest compressions to resuscitate her.
For a while, the only sound in the room was the rhythm of Zhao Mumu pressing down on her chest.
No one knew how long it lasted, but Ji Yanwan still didn’t respond. Desperate, Zhao Mumu leaned down and pressed her lips to Ji Yanwan’s, starting mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Her lips were icy. The water she had swallowed had cooled her entire mouth to a chilling degree.
