- Chapter 11 - This is Strength
The test results detonated like a heavy bomb in the deathly silent observation room.
On the screen, the line that had brazenly broken through the S-level threshold and surged all the way toward the legendary SS-level domain pierced straight into everyone’s eyes.
The military high command turned pale one by one. Their hushed voices sounded like throats being strangled.
“B-rank file… the hell, how is this possible?”
“Is the equipment broken? Hurry up and recalibrate!”
“This kind of potential… the Empire has never produced a monster like this!”
Across the reinforced glass wall, Xiao Lin’s deep green eyes contracted sharply.
This unbelievable data didn’t make him happy—instead, it felt like a hand had gripped his heart hard.
A violent sense of danger bristled along the back of his neck, making every hair stand on end.
With this kind of talent, once exposed to the muddy waters of the Empire, how many wolves and tigers would come for Ningning? He didn’t even dare imagine it.
He must—at all costs—hide him, keep him where only he could touch.
Beside him, Gu Qingfeng’s usually gentle smile froze for an instant.
The surprise in his eyes quickly sank, transforming into something more complex—scrutiny mixed with calculation, a glimmer of possession.
How interesting.
Even more interesting than he had imagined.
Such an untouched, priceless treasure—only he was worthy to be its sole master.
Their gazes collided briefly in the air, then instantly slid away.
“Numbers don’t prove everything.”
Huo Ze’s voice cut through the commotion of the observation room. He pushed the door open and strode in, his eyes—usually aloof—now burning with near-fanatic light.
Ignoring the military brass, his gaze clung to Ningning like a scalpel, naked in its obsession and curiosity.
“This isn’t just a simple spiritual power level,” he declared, quick and decisive. “It’s a qualitative change! A kind of evolution we’ve never seen before! I demand we immediately proceed to the second-phase test!”
No one present dared to oppose this infamous scientific madman of the Empire.
Ningning stared in fright as the strange-eyed man advanced toward him, his legs going weak, instinctively wanting to shrink back.
He hated the way this man looked at him—it wasn’t like looking at a person, but at a toy waiting to be taken apart.
“Don’t be afraid, Cadet Ningning,” Huo Ze softened his tone, feigning gentleness. “It’s simple. Release your spirit beast. Let me see it.”
【Host, don’t be scared! Let Moon Bunny come out and give them a little B-rank shock!】 System 89 cheered in his head.
Biting his lip, Ningning could feel those two burning gazes from outside the glass. Helplessly, he closed his eyes.
The air shimmered with light motes.
A snow-white little rabbit appeared, fluffy and soft like a ball of cloud. Its eyes—pure violet, the same as Ningning’s—were clear and crystalline.
The moment it appeared, sensing the cold, unfamiliar environment, the long ears twitched nervously. With a frightened hop, it buried itself into Ningning’s arms, trembling pitifully.
That fragile, adorable sight made many in the room unconsciously hold their breath.
Even Huo Ze’s eyes flashed with genuine awe.
“So beautiful…” murmured a young researcher, face full of infatuation.
Inside the observation room, Xiao Lin looked at Ningning clutching the little rabbit, lost and helpless, and his heart clenched painfully.
He almost couldn’t restrain himself from rushing in to snatch the boy away from all those prying eyes.
Gu Qingfeng’s fingers curled faintly at his side, his gaze darkening.
He remembered that night—the softness of this little rabbit lingering in his palm.
But Huo Ze’s amazement lasted only a second before scientific mania consumed him again.
Without turning, he ordered his assistants: “Release a test subject—an A-class berserk specimen, black bear.”
The metal gate at the far end of the chamber rose.
A violent roar exploded!
A black bear spirit beast, massive as a hill, charged out. Its eyes glowed blood-red, drool dripping from its maw, its aura so savage it made the air feel sticky.
Ningning’s face instantly drained of color.
He had never seen anything so terrifying. That raw killing intent froze the blood in his veins.
The rabbit in his arms felt his fear, trembling harder, nearly melting into a quivering ball of fur.
The bear spotted its weak little target. With another roar, it thundered forward, each step shaking the ground.
“Ah!” Ningning squeezed his eyes shut, body rigid.
Just as the bear’s claws were about to slash down—
A sudden change!
From the trembling rabbit in Ningning’s arms, a ring of faint violet light rippled outward like water.
It wasn’t dazzling, but soft, dreamlike.
Wherever it spread, cold metal walls seemed gentler, the violent air stilled, even carrying a faint sweet fragrance of blossoms.
The charging bear slammed to a halt as if against an invisible wall, screeching on the floor.
The crimson in its eyes faded rapidly, replaced with confusion.
Tilting its massive head, it looked at the little rabbit in Ningning’s arms—its ferocity melting into… gentleness?
Then, before everyone’s disbelieving eyes, the bear slowly lowered itself.
It whimpered, almost in supplication, then rolled over, exposing its soft, unguarded belly.
An instinctive gesture of utter submission.
The testing chamber fell into a deathly silence.
“…That’s it!”
Huo Ze snapped out of his daze, rushing to the monitors. Seeing the bear’s readings plummet into calmness—even showing “pleasure”—he shook with ecstasy.
He whirled around, voice high and near-mad as he proclaimed to the observation room:
“This isn’t soothing! This is the legendary Spirit Beast Suppression! The innate charm to command a sentinel’s instincts from the source!”
He spread his arms as though embracing a glorious future, eyes gleaming with mania.
“With him, the Empire’s battle against the Zerg Queen’s psychic corruption will no longer be a problem! He is the ultimate weapon! A gift from the gods to the Empire!”
Drawing a deep breath, he locked burning eyes on Ningning and formally declared:
“I request that Cadet Ningning be kept in my laboratory, under my personal year-long ‘in-depth research’! We must uncover the structure of this ability!”
“Research”… “a year”…
The words poured over Ningning like a bucket of ice water.
He didn’t want to stay here! He didn’t want to be dissected!
“I…” his trembling voice, faint as a mosquito’s buzz, carried a sob, “I don’t want to…”
“I object!”
“No way!”
Two cold, thunderous voices roared in unison!
“Bang—!”
The observation room door was slammed open with brutal force.
Xiao Lin and Gu Qingfeng stormed in, their auras freezing the very air. One on each side, they positioned themselves before Ningning like towering mountains, shielding him completely.
Xiao Lin’s face was dark enough to drip ink. The look he gave Huo Ze was one reserved for the dead. The crushing pressure of the Empire’s strongest sentinel—tempered in blood and fire—suffocated the chamber.
He ignored Huo Ze’s protests. Striding forward, he loomed over Ningning, who trembled in fright.
Suddenly, a tall shadow fell over him, blocking that unsettling gaze. Instinctively, Ningning looked up—and fell into those endless green eyes.
Xiao Lin said nothing. He only extended a hand, warm and dry, with irresistible force.
His palm closed over Ningning’s shaking shoulder, pulling him firmly into his embrace. One arm shielded him from behind, encasing him in absolute protection.
The hold radiated security, pulling Ningning back from fear. His stiff body slackened slightly. The clean, cold scent of the man filled his nose, steadying his breath.
Even the rabbit peeked its fuzzy head out from the crook of his arm, blinking its violet eyes curiously.
Only once Ningning was completely encircled did Xiao Lin finally raise his eyes—cold, sharp—and direct them at Huo Ze.
Word by word, as if ground from his teeth:
“Ningning is not your experiment.”
Gu Qingfeng still wore his gentle smile, but it was icy.
He turned toward the stunned military officers, speaking leisurely yet with the unshakable weight of royalty:
“Master Huo Ze’s devotion to the Empire is admirable. But Ningning is first and foremost a student of the Academy, my assistant, and more importantly—the Empire’s treasure.”
He paused, gaze drifting lazily across the room, then added softly:
“His health and wellbeing must take precedence for both the Crown and the military. After all, no one here would want to see such a ‘treasure’ damaged beyond repair in the name of ‘research’… correct?”
