Chapter 6: Climbing Through the Window
The Alpha had bitten too hard. Previously, being numbed by the cold wind had dulled his physical sensations, but now that Xie Mo was curled up on the bed, he realized his nape was burning and heavy.
This wasn’t the first time he had been bitten.
There were several occasions in the past when Tang Yingrui would come home and, as if desperate to prove something, grab Xie Mo’s hair and bite into his nape. It was painful, but beyond the pain, he felt nothing else. With his glands damaged, Tang Yingrui could neither release pheromones nor mark an Omega. The encounter would always end with Tang Yingrui letting go in frustration, sitting alone on the sofa against the wall with a lit cigarette, his eyes filled with an indecipherable gloom.
But this time was different. It started as a fever. Xie Mo pulled back the quilt, gasping in small breaths. Gradually, it felt as if his entire body was on fire, the heat spreading from his glands to every extremity. His beautiful, pale cheeks were flushed a deep crimson.
So hot. That was the only thought in Xie Mo’s mind.
Xie Mo’s thin, frail body curled up slightly, and the sheets beneath him were soon soaked with cold sweat. His pale hand gripped the bedsheets as he wiped the thin sweat from his brow, his head feeling heavy. He slowly realized the truth: his heat had arrived.
It had only been half a month since his last heat; Xie Mo felt a surge of regret for not stocking up on more suppressants. The small room was soon filled with the sweet scent of Nutmeg, which even began to seep out through the window.
Xie Mo gritted his teeth, intending to endure it as he had done before. But suddenly, his nose caught several unfamiliar Alpha pheromones.
An Omega in heat is incredibly sensitive to everything. His clouded brain instantly snapped awake. Xie Mo instinctively looked toward the source of the pheromones—the window.
This area was on the edge of the city and was almost completely abandoned. The people living here were either bankrupt gamblers or thugs hiding from debts—essentially, Betas with no social standing. Consequently, Xie Mo was the only Omega in the vicinity.
“Holy crap, there’s actually an Omega in this shithole!” a young Alpha’s voice rang out, sounding slightly out of breath.
Xie Mo froze instantly. Why were there Alphas here? Holding his breath, he crept to the window and shut it, but the Alphas below all looked up at the same time. By the moonlight, Xie Mo saw four or five Alphas downstairs. An Omega alone in a house encountering several Alphas in their rut—the scene was terrifying.
“It really is an Omega…” An Alpha’s eyes lit up, staring like a predator at its prey.
Xie Mo tremblingly drew the curtains. Realizing something, he scrambled out of the bedroom and ran to bolt the front door. The Alphas moved with frightening speed; just as he reached the door, a violent pounding erupted from the other side. Knowing the Omega was home alone, they acted without restraint.
“Open up, baby. It must be hard being all alone, right?”
Xie Mo was drenched in sweat, his mind a mess. He struggled to drag a table over to barricade the door, then stacked several stools on top, terrified they would break in. After finishing, he curled up on the sofa, staring at the door and shaking uncontrollably.
After an unknown amount of time, the pounding finally faded into the distance. Xie Mo touched his burning gland and dragged his weak legs into the bathroom. As the cold water sprayed down, he pressed his sweaty back against the freezing tiles.
So hot… he thought to himself.
Water droplets from the shower fell into the cracks of his parched lips; he couldn’t help but stick out his tongue to lick them, only to taste the salty bitterness of his own cold sweat. This time, however, the cold water did nothing to soothe the restlessness in his heart; instead, it made him feel even worse.
“Why isn’t it working…”
Xie Mo grew dizzy with anxiety, his body sliding down the tiles uncontrollably until he was sitting on the floor. The only Alpha he could think of to help him was Tang Yingrui, but he wasn’t back yet.
In a half-conscious state, a loud crash echoed. The bathroom door was burst open, and a familiar Alpha pheromone rushed toward him. He hadn’t realized he would crave the pheromones of the Alpha who had bitten him. As he was pulled into a tight embrace, the thick scent of Cypress wood enveloped him, giving Xie Mo a sense of security he had never felt before.
The corner of Ji Hanyue’s lip was still bleeding—a mark from a brawl with other Alphas. On his way home, there had been a massive traffic jam due to an accident. The Nutmeg scent in his car had faded until it was almost gone, and the heat of his rut nearly tore the roof off his car. Driven by an inexplicable impulse, Ji Hanyue had turned back.
This place was easy to find because there were only two old residential buildings. Xie Mo’s home was even easier to find because several Alphas were loitering nearby—destitute Alphas who couldn’t afford an Omega. Alpha instincts made Ji Hanyue loathe the fact that anyone else was coveting his Omega.
As the Omega’s soft body nestled into his arms, Ji Hanyue’s breathing grew heavy. In the air, the scents of Nutmeg and Cypress wood intertwined. As he carried Xie Mo out of the bathroom, his gaze swept over the cramped space before he strode into the bedroom.
His chest was suddenly nudged gently. Xie Mo’s eyes were misty with tears as he slowly gestured a few times. Though Ji Hanyue didn’t know sign language, he somehow understood the question.
“I climbed in through the window.”
Xie Mo’s apartment was on the second floor; it was easy to climb up using the drainage pipe.
