The Beautiful Wife I Picked Up Is A Little Mute - Chapter 41
Chapter 41: Overthinking
Despite being injured, an Enigma’s strength was not to be underestimated. Just as Cui Yejin was about to issue a second order, Ji Hanyue stepped in with a frown to stop him.
“What’s the rush?” Ji Hanyue asked. He was still waiting for an answer from Kou Xingying.
At this moment, Kou Xingying finally realized the gravity of her situation. In the instant she lost her strength and let go of Tang Yingrui, Kou Xingyu had already lunged forward at extreme speed, pulling the man safely out of her reach.
She covered the bleeding bullet hole on the back of her neck, warm blood dripping through her fingers. Under the gaze of a circle of Alphas who looked ready for war, she forced herself to stand tall, her cold gaze sweeping the surroundings.
Suddenly, she laughed. “Xingyu, are you really going to kill me? Do you actually dare let them open fire and finish me off?” Despite the years apart, she knew her brother’s nature was not inherently bloodthirsty.
In this tense, sword-drawn moment, a faint scent drifted into her nose. It was different from the aggressive pheromones of an Alpha—it was fresh, ethereal, and carried a hint of sweetness. An Enigma’s sense of smell was naturally more acute. Aside from her, the Alpha who had questioned her earlier also showed a subtle, unusual reaction.
There was an Omega here.
“Move, move! Out of the way!”
Zhou Minghe pushed through the layers of Alphas and patted Cui Yejin on the shoulder. With a face full of “righteousness,” he said, “Yejin, I won’t tell Xie Shi about this.”
Cui Yejin turned around, bewildered, only to see a disheveled Omega following behind Zhou Minghe. The person’s head was wrapped in a bandage, and his small face was stained with dust. His watery eyes looked at the crowd with fear; he looked unspeakably pitiful.
Wait… he looks familiar, Cui Yejin thought.
Zhou Minghe gave Xie Mo a shove forward. “There,” he said, teasing in a low voice. “He was making a fuss about finding you, so I brought him in. I didn’t think you’d have the guts to pick up an Omega behind Xie Shi’s back.”
Cui Yejin frowned. “Shut the hell up.” He finally remembered seeing this person at the hospital. But he hadn’t expected Zhou Minghe to bring him here. “Zhou Minghe, are you insane?”
Xie Mo was half a head shorter than any of them. Standing in the middle of a group of Alphas with overwhelming auras, he felt instinctively uncomfortable. By chance, through a gap in the crowd, he spotted an Alpha leaning against a wall nearby.
It was Tang Yingrui. There was another frantic-looking Alpha guarding him. Xie Mo felt a wave of relief; he hadn’t found the wrong place after all.
Just as Xie Mo was about to slip through the gap in the crowd, his shoulder was gripped by a force like iron pliers. For a moment, he felt his bones might shatter. He turned his head with difficulty and locked eyes with a pair of frost-covered pupils. Ji Hanyue’s face was a mask of gloom.
Xie Mo’s heart skipped a beat. Oh no. His second reaction: Why is Ji Hanyue here?
Before he could process it, his waist tightened, and he was suddenly flipped over and slung over a shoulder. Xie Mo struggled and writhed on Ji Hanyue’s shoulder, his knees bumping against the Alpha’s side, broken gasps escaping his throat.
He was here for Tang Yingrui. Tang Yingrui looked terrible; something bad must have happened to him. He definitely needed him.
Suddenly, a heavy smack landed on his thigh. Five finger marks immediately bloomed on his plump flesh. The stinging heat made his tear ducts flare up again. The strike left Xie Mo dazed; he gasped for air, tears uncontrollably hitting Ji Hanyue’s back. He had never been hit like that before.
Xie Mo gestured desperately, trying to point back toward Tang Yingrui, a frantic “Heh-heh” sound coming from his throat.
“Behave yourself!” Ji Hanyue growled. He was fuming. The person he had worked so hard to find had gone through all this trouble just to come to this place. They hadn’t even been apart for a month, and he had already turned himself into a little beggar again—bandaged head, ragged clothes, and even his clean cheeks were filthy.
Xie Mo seemed determined to fight him, resisting with everything he had to get down. Ji Hanyue didn’t dare touch the bandaged injury, so he could only pin him tighter to prevent him from falling.
As they walked away, a gunshot echoed from the house behind them. An agile Enigma suddenly leaped from a first-floor window—Kou Xingying had broken through the glass, clutching her bleeding neck. Her figure was like an arrow released from a bow as she stumbled toward the deep forest. Unfortunately, just as she was about to disappear, her knees buckled, and she fell forward.
“Ugh—” She groaned in pain and fainted. Men immediately rushed over to load her into a car.
Nearby, Cui Yejin climbed out of the window. He tossed a steaming tranquilizer gun to his subordinate. He watched Kou Xingying being loaded into the off-road vehicle, then glanced toward Ji Hanyue. He was uncharacteristically surprised. When he first saw that Omega, he never imagined the person would be connected to Zhou Minghe and Ji Hanyue. Moreover, the relationship with Ji Hanyue seemed… unusual.
Ji Hanyue raised a hand casually toward them, his voice hard: “I found my person. I’m leaving.”
Xie Mo somehow found the strength to wedge himself against the car frame, refusing to get in.
“Whatever you have to say, we’ll talk back in City Z,” Ji Hanyue said, his jaw locked tight. He carefully avoided Xie Mo’s injuries while prying his fingers off the car door one by one. He pushed him into the car with a mix of force and restraint. “Stop fighting it.”
Unexpectedly, Xie Mo had learned a trick; the moment he was pushed in, he opened the door on the other side and scrambled out. Ji Hanyue laughed out of sheer anger. Xie Mo was the first Omega he’d met with this much energy. He had worried about Xie Mo’s weak constitution and held back in everything he did—it turned out he was overthinking it.
Xie Mo was dizzy, and running was a subconscious reaction. He hadn’t gone far when a hesitant voice called out to him.
Tang Yingrui had finally noticed Xie Mo. He shook off Kou Xingyu’s supportive hand, dropped a frown and a sentence—”I’m fine, go look after your sister”—and walked toward Xie Mo with an expression of disbelief.
Perhaps knowing that Tang Yingrui had suffered because of him, Kou Xingyu didn’t move to stop him.
Tang Yingrui’s gaze swept over the Alpha with the chilling aura standing behind Xie Mo, and his heart constricted. The pressure emanating from that man triggered his survival instincts. Then, the Alpha spoke in a voice full of amusement—the same voice from the phone call:
“Xie Mo, do you want me to tell him everything that happened between us?”
In just two seconds, Tang Yingrui guessed exactly who he was. During the time he was away, Xie Mo had been living in this Alpha’s house. He wasn’t angry; he had simply assumed Xie Mo was “staying” there.
Xie Mo’s footsteps toward Tang Yingrui froze the moment he heard those words. His fists clenched tight. He looked ready to turn back.
This result didn’t surprise Ji Hanyue. Faced with a choice between two Alphas with such a massive gap between them, anyone would choose him. To him, it was beyond doubt.
