The Beautiful Wife I Picked Up Is A Little Mute - Chapter 37
Chapter 37: Indescribable
Xie Mo had read many cases online stating that a blow to the back of the head could cause anything from memory loss to permanent cognitive impairment. Consequently, he underwent a series of neurological exams, CT scans, and other tests. Even after the wound was bandaged, lingering fear haunted him.
He scribbled his worries on a piece of white paper, repeatedly asking the doctor if there would be any lasting side effects. It was only after hearing the doctor’s patient explanation—that he would recover as long as he changed his dressings on time and rested quietly—that the heart hanging in his throat finally settled back into his chest.
The medical expenses had been covered by Xie Shi, the person who brought him in, and the amount was terrifyingly high. Not only that, but Xie Shi had also thoughtfully bought him some hot porridge. Xie Mo pulled the crumpled two thousand-plus dollars from his pocket and counted it several times; he was still short by several thousand.
Gritting his teeth, he mustered his courage and gently tapped the forearm of Xie Shi, who was sitting beside him looking at messages. Xie Shi was focused on his phone, but upon feeling the movement, he immediately turned his head with a look of concern.
“Does your head still hurt?”
Although there was a dull ache, it was within a tolerable range. Xie Mo shook his head gently. After a moment of hesitation, he carefully took Xie Shi’s hand and wrote on the palm, stroke by stroke: “Can you give me your contact information? I only have 2,585 dollars right now. Once I save enough, I will definitely pay you back the rest.”
Xie Shi had known since the ride to the hospital that this Omega was unable to speak. Thus, when Xie Mo took his hand, he didn’t pull away. Feeling the characters traced on his palm, he hurriedly waved his hand and offered a gentle smile.
“There’s no need to pay it back. Keep the money to buy yourself some good food to recover.”
“But it cost you a lot of money,” Xie Mo wrote, feeling guilty. Just as he was about to write more, his finger met empty air—Xie Shi’s hand was suddenly yanked away.
A deep, clearly displeased voice came from above. “He said you don’t need to pay it back. Didn’t you hear him?”
Xie Mo looked up to see a tall Alpha. The man was dressed in a sharp, custom-tailored suit. Perhaps having just come from a banquet, his black hair was slicked back. Under defined brow bones, his eyes slanted slightly upward, and his thin lips were pressed tight. He radiated an aura that screamed “do not approach.” One look was enough to tell he was difficult to get close to.
Right now, he was gripping Xie Shi’s hand, pulling him up from the waiting chair. The Alpha was incredibly tall, nearly as tall as Ji Hanyue. Xie Mo had to crane his neck to see him clearly. The man’s cold face was clouded with irritation as his sharp eyes scrutinized Xie Mo from head to toe.
A second later, the Alpha’s gaze swept over Xie Shi, and his hostile aura instantly dissipated. He straightened his collar, his tone softening.
“It’s late. It’s time to go back.”
Seeing the Alpha naturally put an arm around Xie Shi’s shoulder, it was obvious their relationship was deep. Xie Mo opened his mouth several times, wanting to offer the money, but his hand froze in mid-air. He wanted to look at Xie Shi for his opinion, but the man’s figure was already completely obscured by the Alpha’s broad back.
The Alpha glanced down at the loose bills in Xie Mo’s hand and let out a “tsk.” He pulled out his wallet, grabbed a thick stack of cash, and tossed it onto the chair, gesturing with a slight tilt of his chin. Then, he led Xie Shi out of the hospital by the hand.
Xie Mo stood frozen, clutching his own money. Not only had he failed to pay them back, but they had given him more money.
As he was being pulled away, Xie Shi kept looking back, appearing worried. A little mute person—and a physically weak Omega at that—the danger index for him was sky-high. Not to mention they had found him unconscious; he had clearly already met with misfortune once today.
Just as Xie Mo sat down, the Alpha suddenly doubled back. His face was even darker than before. He slapped a gold-embossed business card into Xie Mo’s palm and said coldly, “If anything happens, call this number.”
Before the words had even finished, the Alpha turned around, grabbed the still-lingering Xie Shi, and disappeared through the hospital doors without looking back.
This was the first time in Xie Mo’s nineteen years that he had met such a kind Beta—and an Alpha whose behavior was good even if his expression wasn’t. The card in his hand was made of metal, feeling uniquely heavy. The name “Cui Yejin” was printed prominently on the front in bold, elegant characters.
Xie Mo repeated the name twice in his mind. Recalling the Alpha’s face, he felt as if he had seen him on TV, though he couldn’t remember which channel. He tucked the card into his pocket. The most urgent task now was to find Tang Yingrui.
The diagnosis was a mild concussion. After walking only a few steps, Xie Mo felt a wave of nausea and a headache. He leaned against the wall to steady himself, looking out at the prosperous, towering buildings of the city with a sense of utter bewilderment.
This was not a city he was familiar with. He didn’t even know where that car had ultimately driven to.
Dejected, Xie Mo pulled out the metal card that was still warm from his body heat. After walking for a long time, he finally found a public telephone booth. Feeling a spark of hope, he stepped inside and dialed the number on the card.
The phone rang twice before it was picked up. The voice was just as cold as the Alpha’s had been earlier. Both sides remained silent for a few seconds; the other side was waiting for Xie Mo to speak. But Xie Mo couldn’t make a sound. He hesitated, then habitually tapped the wall twice.
Tap-tap.
The line went dead.
On the other side, Xie Shi looked toward the sound, only to see Cui Yejin tucking his phone back into his suit pocket with a neutral expression. “Harassment call. Let’s go, let’s head back to the banquet hall.”
No matter how naive Xie Mo was, he understood. That Alpha had only given him the card to save face for Xie Shi. He never intended to help.
Still, Xie Mo was very grateful to them for giving him money. This city felt strange in every way, yet it was just as full of neon lights and heavy traffic as City A. Xie Mo’s thin, frail figure was swallowed by the bustling crowd, entirely inconspicuous.
He tried to search the secluded alleys, but he was met either by snarling, vicious dogs or predatory Alphas following him in the shadows. Terrified, Xie Mo didn’t dare wander into quiet places anymore, lingering only on the busy, well-lit streets.
His feelings for Tang Yingrui were hard to put into words. It was likely the mutual sympathy of two people depending on each other for survival. Xie Mo could feel that Tang Yingrui seemed to need him.
It was a different kind of “need” than Ji Hanyue’s. Ji Hanyue had plenty of money and plenty of people to love him; he didn’t lack Xie Mo’s share. But Tang Yingrui… it seemed as though besides Xie Mo, no one else in the world would ever care about him.
