Chapter 20: The Whole Family Likes Men, Except Me (20)
Zhang Yulan remained resolute. No matter how much Meng Rudeng pleaded or showed weakness, she didn’t waver.
Eventually, Meng Rudeng’s temper flared as well. He felt that Zhang Yulan’s behavior was a severe provocation and an insult to his dignity. “Fine, if you want a divorce, let’s divorce. I hope you never regret this.”
Zhang Yulan gave a heart-weary smile. “Of course I won’t. I only regret that I saw through you too late, wasting so much time on you and the Meng family. Sometimes I wonder why I ever met you, and why I persisted for so long.”
Her regret was palpable and genuine. Meng Rudeng felt a flash of panic, but it was quickly replaced by a greater surge of fury. Was her resentment not just a lateral expression of her total rejection of him?
They had supported each other for decades and were nearly at retirement age, yet they were causing such a scene… Meng Rudeng felt he was losing a great deal of face. He snorted coldly and spoke to her with vengeful sarcasm: “Since we’re divorcing, we’ll get the certificates tomorrow. Lest you go back on your word later and act like we’re playing house.”
“Fine,” Zhang Yulan agreed readily.
She answered so decisively that although Meng Rudeng felt uneasy, he didn’t take it too much to heart. Although Zhang Yulan occasionally went to the office, she was still a full-time housewife most of the time. He truly didn’t believe she had the capital to be independent. Even if she got the company, so what? Could she sustain it and keep it profitable?
It wasn’t that he was being dark-minded or wishing ill upon his ex-wife; he simply felt he knew her character and abilities far too well.
Xu Yangyang, having achieved her goal, quietly withdrew. She didn’t want to overstay her welcome and risk making them rethink their impulsive decisions. Divorce involved a lot of asset division, so Zhang Yulan wasn’t in a rush for the final details.
Having broken free from the shackles of her marriage, Zhang Yulan felt her entire body become light. Consequently, when she reappeared before Mrs. Jiang, her refreshed, “reborn” appearance left the other woman stunned.
Jiang Ni had a premonition but couldn’t voice her guesses in front of her mother. She stayed patient, accompanying her mother and Zhang Yulan through dinner. It was only after they were in the car that she found a suitable moment to speak.
Mrs. Jiang was surprised and began to ask for details, but Jiang Ni shook her head, indicating she didn’t know the specifics. This was, of course, a lie to stall her mother. No matter what happened between Zhang Yulan and Meng Rudeng, it was Xu Yangyang’s family business.
As an outsider, she shouldn’t gossip. If word spread and Xu Yangyang found out, what would happen to their relationship? Jiang Ni didn’t dare gamble. Just the thought of Xu Yangyang looking at her with cold, unfamiliar disgust made her feel like she couldn’t breathe.
While Meng Zhichuan and Xu Yangyang went to work early the next morning, Zhang Yulan and Meng Rudeng both summoned their lawyers. Sitting face-to-face, they divided their assets calmly.
Aside from the company, Zhang Yulan didn’t demand extra property; her existing personal assets were substantial. Even if she never worked again, the annual dividends, rental income from various properties, and more were enough to maintain her privileged lifestyle.
Ironically, it was Meng Rudeng who would find his budget tightening. Most of the joint assets had already been transferred to Zhang Yulan over the years. He didn’t care much, but he did try to fight for his son. “Zhichuan is grown now and reaching the age to start a family. As his mother, you should think of him.”
Zhang Yulan let out a cold laugh that sounded like she’d heard the world’s biggest joke. “Have I not thought of him enough all these years? The assets in his name are already more than yours! On the other hand, Feifei…” Zhang Yulan felt a pang of guilt. “I owe her so much. I missed her growing up.”
“So don’t even think about these things in my hand; I’m leaving all of them to Feifei.” Zhang Yulan tilted her chin, her attitude toward Meng Rudeng quite arrogant.
Meng Rudeng’s face shifted, but Zhang Yulan continued her bombardment: “Besides, don’t you know your own son? Does he need to ‘start a family’ now? If he can ever produce a grandchild for me, I, Zhang Yulan, will take his last name.”
This was a direct humiliation to Meng Rudeng. He stood up abruptly, pointing a trembling finger at her, speechless with rage.
Zhang Yulan smiled, crossing her arms. “What, am I wrong? The father is ‘bent,’ and the son is ‘bent.’ The top beam is crooked and the lower beams follow. This has nothing to do with me; my orientation is perfectly normal.”
The lawyers, who were supposed to be focused on paperwork, instantly and discreetly perked up their ears. There’s tea this good? Today’s shift was worth it!
Meng Rudeng was speechless. He glared at her for a long time, but seeing that she wouldn’t back down or “coax” him like she used to, he sat back down dejectedly. “Whatever you say.” He realized Zhang Yulan’s wings had grown strong; he could no longer control her.
Xu Yangyang didn’t pay much attention to the details. After getting confirmation from 0357 that they had officially signed the papers, she decided to poke at Meng Zhichuan. “Brother, did you know? Mom and Dad got a divorce.”
“What?! They divorced?!” The heartbroken Meng Zhichuan looked up instantly. “When did this happen?”
“Just now,” Xu Yangyang said with a sad expression. “Nanny Zhang thought they were acting strange and quietly checked. That’s how she found out.” She wiped an imaginary tear. “Brother, what will we do? Do you think they’ll want you or me?”
Meng Zhichuan was shrewd; he immediately thought of asset division and how much he would ultimately receive. He couldn’t sit still and made a clumsy excuse to leave the office. “I have to see a client. You stay busy.”
“Got it,” Xu Yangyang said, lowering her head to hide the ambition in her eyes. To her, it didn’t matter if they gave her money; she was just here for the mission. And currently, having fun was taking priority over correcting the plot. Watching the Meng family disintegrate brought her immense joy.
Meng Zhichuan rushed home in a daze, still unable to accept reality. Seeing the domestic staff packing things, he ran to his parents. “Dad, Mom, why did you divorce out of the blue? Shouldn’t you have discussed something this big with us?!”
He was frantic, losing his sense of tact.
Zhang Yulan looked up at the son she had always doted on and felt a sudden wave of disappointment. He didn’t come to ask if she was okay; he came to blame her. If it were Feifei, she would have empathized and comforted her. Only a woman could truly understand another woman’s suffering.
Zhang Yulan adjusted her emotions. When she looked at him again, her gaze was indifferent. “Discuss it with you? Why should I? If I discussed it with you, would I not have to divorce?”
She sounded like she had swallowed a firecracker, which the pampered Meng Zhichuan was not used to. “Mom, I didn’t mean it that way.”
“Then what did you mean? Why aren’t you at the office? Why are you home at this hour? Where’s Feifei?”
Meng Zhichuan ignored the last question. “I heard you divorced and was worried…”
“Your worry is unnecessary. I’m doing great.” Zhang Yulan interrupted him unceremoniously. She was better than great—she had money, and she no longer had to be a “nanny” serving these two men. It was a rebirth. She actually wondered why she had lived such a miserable life before. Is it not better to be beautiful and alone?
Meng Zhichuan choked and instinctively looked to his father for help. But Meng Rudeng looked away, refusing to meet his eyes. Feeling uneasy, he pushed for the answer to the question he really came back for: “Then… who am I going with?”
“How old are you? Do you still need to live with your parents? You’re not a minor,” Zhang Yulan mocked.
Meng Zhichuan felt a literal pain in his chest. “But you guys are my parents after all…”
“Enough.” Zhang Yulan was annoyed just looking at her ex-husband and son. She elegantly patted her clothes and stood up. “It’s just a divorce, not a death. Why are you overthinking it? This house is in your father’s name, so it stays with him. I’ll have my things out in three days.”
She spoke simply to him: “The assets in your name stay yours; we didn’t touch them. But your father has given me the company.”
Meng Zhichuan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Zhang Yulan wasn’t finished. She picked up the Schnauzer that was nuzzling her leg. “By the way, from today on, Feifei goes with me, and the dog goes with me.” She thought for a second. “And Jiang Ni goes with me too.”
“If you want to find a daughter-in-law or a wife for yourselves, go flip through the A-City Socialite Directory yourself. Don’t think about freeloading off my hard work.”
Jiang Ni was the daughter-in-law Zhang Yulan had stayed up late to hand-pick. She was the one she was most satisfied with. Regardless of who she married in the end, she had to stay with her, or Zhang Yulan wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.
Meng Zhichuan: ?
Wait, Mom… you took the house, the dog, the sister, and even the girl I was supposed to marry, but you won’t take me?
That’s too much!
