Chapter 19: The Whole Family Likes Men, Except Me (19)
Xu Yangyang quickly pivoted, her tone urgent as she asked the butler, “Where is she now?”
“In the guest parlor.” After answering honestly, the butler glanced at Jiang Ni before looking back at Xu Yangyang. “Shall I… take you there now?”
“Yes.” Xu Yangyang naturally hadn’t forgotten Jiang Ni’s presence; she gave her an apologetic half-smile. “Sorry, she must be here for something important.”
Jiang Ni felt a sharp sting in her chest, as if a giant hand had squeezed her heart. Her lips paled slightly. “It’s alright. Go ahead and take care of your business.”
Having received the answer, Xu Yangyang didn’t hesitate. With a few strides of her long legs, she quickly vanished from Jiang Ni’s line of sight. Jiang Ni stared blankly in the direction she had gone. Anxiety, loss, and a cocktail of complex emotions surged up in an instant, leaving her overwhelmed and struggling for composure.
Su Rui was indeed there to report on work.
Because she had successfully completed the tasks Xu Yangyang assigned, she was desperate for her “General Manager’s” praise. The moment they met, Su Rui hopped over like a lively sparrow. “General Manager, you really have to praise me this time!” She proudly tilted her fair, delicate chin. “I didn’t cause a single bit of trouble!”
“Oh?” Xu Yangyang arched an eyebrow in surprise. “That truly is rare. Our Xiao Su actually has such a reliable side.”
“General Manager!” Teased by Xu Yangyang, Su Rui’s face reddened with embarrassment. She huffed twice, but didn’t push her luck, instead professionally reporting the results word-for-word.
After listening, Xu Yangyang nodded. “Well done. Keep it up.”
Su Rui smiled happily. Xu Yangyang then gestured for her to sit down and leaned in close to issue a new set of tasks. The new instructions were a bit complex, so Su Rui pulled out a pen and a small notebook, recording as she listened.
The two were very close. From Jiang Ni’s perspective in the distance, she could only see Xu Yangyang proactively leaning toward Su Rui—their two beautiful, fluffy heads nearly touching in an indescribable intimacy.
She is so unguarded around Su Rui.
Jiang Ni’s eyelashes fluttered downward. She didn’t want to keep looking for trouble for herself, yet she couldn’t help it. She looked up again, watching the two talking and laughing. Xu Yangyang’s eyes and brows were filled with a radiant, charming smile that made Jiang Ni wish she could replace Su Rui on the spot.
But her relationship with Xu Yangyang wasn’t “there” yet. Bursting in would only damage the image Xu Yangyang had of her. Jiang Ni pressed her fingers together, finally bowing to reality. At least now she could occasionally appear by her side and exchange a few words like an ordinary friend. Why break that “window paper” and scare her away with her dark, lowly thoughts?
Her love might only be a burden to Xu Yangyang. After all, her identity was set from the start: the brother’s blind date.
But some thoughts, the more they are suppressed, the more they rebound—like a rebellious youth who refuses to back down.
Su Rui finished her notes. After confirming nothing was missing, she carefully tucked her notebook away to say goodbye. Her gaze shifted, and she caught a glimpse of Jiang Ni standing in the shadows. After a momentary daze, Su Rui couldn’t help but ask, “General Manager, why is Miss Jiang…”
…at your house?
Su Rui felt a pang of unease. Had she stumbled upon some secret? Following Su Rui’s gaze, Xu Yangyang spotted Jiang Ni as well. Sensing the scrutiny, Jiang Ni looked up, gave a nonchalant smile, and naturally walked past them.
Xu Yangyang didn’t hide the truth, mostly because she didn’t think it was a big deal. “Her mother brought her over today to visit my mother.”
The words were few, but Su Rui keenly sensed many layers of meaning. For instance, the private relationship between Xu Yangyang and Jiang Ni was far better than she had previously assumed. Moreover, the relationship between the two families was close and friendly, suggesting they likely visited each other often.
Su Rui clenched her fingers, smelling something unusual. Miss Jiang’s feelings for the General Manager are definitely not ordinary, Su Rui analyzed silently. Although the woman appeared calm just now, the glance she swept over Su Rui was tinged with wariness and caution. Su Rui was sensitive to emotions; she didn’t think it was an illusion.
“Then, General Manager, I’ll take my leave.” Not wanting to be part of such a complex emotional entanglement, Su Rui sensibly said her goodbyes.
Xu Yangyang didn’t insist she stay. With a smile, she personally saw her to the door and called the family driver to take her home. Their interaction was natural—slightly intimate, but within professional boundaries. Jiang Ni quietly retreated, hiding her figure, hating her own behavior and possessiveness. It felt inexplicable, yet she was powerless to change it. She felt like a creature in a dark sewer—craving the light but unable to draw near.
Once Xu Yangyang and Jiang Ni had left the immediate area, Zhang Yulan only spared them a brief glance. To her, the more pressing issue was her husband and son, who were both practically drooling over the young makeup artist, Xiao Lan.
Seeing the two of them looking dazed and completely enchanted, Zhang Yulan was incensed. If Jiang Ni and her mother weren’t still in the house, she would have slapped these two disgraceful men into next week. She took a deep breath, using every ounce of her logic to maintain a smile.
When Xu Yangyang returned after seeing Su Rui off, she first looked at Zhang Yulan, then at the father-son duo, Meng Rudeng and Meng Zhichuan. Finally, her red lips curled, and with a wave of her hand, she had the staff move Jiang Ni and Mrs. Jiang to another part of the house.
Once the living room was quiet, Xu Yangyang began her performance. “Brother, why is your ex-boyfriend at our house, and how did he become Mom’s makeup artist?”
“Ex-boyfriend?” Meng Rudeng’s face changed dramatically. Wasn’t this the “confidant” he met at the club? The one Xu Yangyang had broken up a meeting with?
Zhang Yulan watched Meng Rudeng’s reaction, her eyes narrowing dangerously.
Xu Yangyang nodded. “Yes. When Brother was with him, he was so happy.” She stopped there; the others could easily imagine the rest.
Since Xiao Lan appeared, Meng Zhichuan had been in a daze. Now, he nodded distractedly. “Dad, Mom, you guys handle things. I’m going to my room to rest.”
Neither Zhang Yulan nor Meng Rudeng stopped him. Once Meng Zhichuan was gone, Xu Yangyang turned her firepower toward Meng Rudeng. “Dad, your reaction just now… it’s almost as if you’re very satisfied with Brother’s ex.”
“A pity they’ve already broken up.”
What’s a pity about that? Meng Rudeng felt a surge of joy in his heart. He was more than happy about it.
Thinking this, his joy leaked onto his face. By the time the atmospheric pressure in the room suddenly dropped and he tried to fix his expression, it was too late.
Zhang Yulan was calm—calmer than she had ever been in her life. “Meng Rudeng, let’s get a divorce.”
“The company and Feifei stay with me. The rest is yours.”
“If you don’t want your ‘marriage of convenience’ to become the talk of the town and ruin your reputation in your old age,” Zhang Yulan stared mockingly at her sanctimonious ex-husband, “then I suggest you agree to my terms.”
