Chapter 31: Wanting to Propose to His Wife
Half an hour later, Huo Yan finally picked out the emojis he liked, only to discover that mobile text messages didn’t support sending them.
By this time, nearly an hour had passed since Xu Jingchu had messaged him asking if he had any emojis.
Huo Yan held the phone and lapsed into silence.
Secretary Shen was about to suggest downloading a chat app when the man handed the phone to him. “VX (WeChat).”
It wasn’t that Huo Yan didn’t know these things existed; he just didn’t like using such “flashy” things.
Secretary Shen diligently helped his big boss download the green chat app. He pulled out his own phone and brought up his QR code. “Boss, let’s scan and add each other as friends.”
He felt a strange surge of excitement at the thought of being the very first friend on Huo Yan’s list.
However, Huo Yan didn’t move. “You can go back now.”
Secretary Shen: “…?”
Seeing him still standing there, Huo Yan looked up. “Is there something else?”
Secretary Shen gripped his phone, his mouth hanging open.
Huo Yan rejected him with a calm tone: “My first friend must be Chu-chu.”
Secretary Shen: “…”
Secretary Shen turned away with a face full of weary resignation. Just as his hand was about to grasp the doorknob, the man’s deep, refined voice came from behind him. “What is Latiao?”
Secretary Shen stumbled and slammed right into the door with a dull “thud.” When he clutched his forehead and turned around, he met Huo Yan’s seemingly disdainful gaze.
Secretary Shen: “…”
Secretary Shen swallowed the curses at the tip of his tongue and maintained the smile of a qualified secretary. “Why did the Boss suddenly mention that?”
“Chu-chu…” Huo Yan paused. “Wants to eat it.”
Actually, Xu Jingchu had only said he wanted latiao (spicy strips), but Huo Yan thought the name sounded like something edible, so he assumed the boy wanted to eat it.
An image of Huo Yan eating spicy strips uncontrollably surfaced in Secretary Shen’s mind, and he fell into a bizarre silence.
Seeing no reaction, Huo Yan frowned. “Is it not food?”
Secretary Shen snapped out of it, suppressed the weird mental image, and smiled. “Latiao is basically a snack that all foodies love.”
Huo Yan nodded. “Prepare a generous amount in the office tomorrow.” He paused. “Chu-chu is coming over.”
That tone sounded suspiciously like showing off…
The smile on Secretary Shen’s face stiffened. “Yes, Boss.” To avoid hearing any more words that didn’t fit Huo Yan’s persona, he asked: “Does the Boss have any other instructions?”
Huo Yan thought for a moment. “How do you propose?”
Secretary Shen’s first reaction was that he had misheard, but looking at the man’s calm and serious expression…
He couldn’t help himself. “Who is the Boss going to propose to?”
Huo Yan looked slightly dissatisfied. “Who do you think I could propose to?”
Secretary Shen: “…” It was just too shocking. For a man who had been single for 28 years to suddenly say he wanted to propose, who wouldn’t be stunned?
Huo Yan felt that his secretary had become less sharp lately. “Do you know how to do it or not?”
This sentence immediately pricked Secretary Shen’s nerves. As a qualified secretary, there was nothing he didn’t know or couldn’t do. If there was something he didn’t know, he could learn!
Secretary Shen’s voice was firm and loud: “Please rest assured, Boss! I will definitely handle this beautifully. I guarantee Young Master Xu will happily agree to marry you!”
Huo Yan was satisfied. Wanting to propose to Xu Jingchu wasn’t a sudden whim; the thought of spending the rest of his life with the boy had crossed his mind as early as the first time he marked him.
At that time, he felt the boy was still young and they hadn’t known each other long enough to rush things. But the boy’s behavior tonight had surprised him; the boy didn’t resist any of his intimate touches.
Thinking of how Xu Jingchu had asked with eyes full of anticipation if he would kiss him again, the corners of Huo Yan’s lips curled up slightly. Time was not an issue; if he was young, he could keep him by his side and raise him slowly. What he needed now was a “status.”
A legal status to engage in any intimate contact with the boy.
This was being responsible to himself, and to Xu Jingchu.
Elsewhere under the same sky.
Zhang Yihui threw his phone with a distorted, ferocious expression.
CRASH— The phone instantly shattered into several pieces, showing just how furious he was.
“Xu Jingchu, son of the richest man…”
He gritted his teeth in resentment. “You did it on purpose! You purposely watched me make a fool of myself! How laughable that I was worried you wouldn’t be able to afford food without your part-time job. You bitch!”
Zhang Yihui’s chest heaved violently. He pulled a business card out of a hidden pocket in his backpack. Recalling the elegant and contemptuous look in that man’s eyes that day, his own eyes turned bloodshot.
“Filthy thing, bullying others with power!” He suddenly threw the business card onto the floor and stomped on it frantically. “Go to hell! All of you should go to hell! Die, die, die!”
After his fit of madness, he walked through the pitch-black corridor with a cold face and entered the basement.
Click— The cramped basement light flickered on, suddenly illuminating everything inside.
If Xu Jingchu were here, he would definitely be terrified.
There were photos on all four walls and even the ceiling of this room. His photos occupied one entire wall.
There were photos of him eating, in class, on the road, and talking to others.
Looking at the photos on the other walls, although he wasn’t the protagonist, they were similarly candid lifestyle shots.
Zhang Yihui walked up to a mirror and lifted it; underneath were more photos.
There was Xu Jingchu, and two other cute-looking boys.
The photos of the three were lined up together. The photos of the two cute boys had been crossed out with large “X”s in red ink. As for Xu Jingchu’s photo, everywhere except his face had been punctured with countless holes, as if someone had been venting their rage. At first glance, it was spine-chilling.
Zhang Yihui stared expressionlessly at Xu Jingchu’s intact face in the photo, his tone very gentle: “Why couldn’t you just be obedient? Why did you have to make me angry just like them? I like you. You knew I liked you…”
His gentle tone gradually became agitated. He pulled out an iron awl and stabbed it fiercely into Xu Jingchu’s photo. “You knew I liked you! Why did you have to provoke me with another man? Why?!”
Stab— stab— stab— The photo, already riddled with small holes, finally gave way and tore apart.
Looking at the destroyed photo, Zhang Yihui’s pupils shrank, and his sanity seemed to return. He hurriedly dropped the awl, his hands trembling as he tried to piece the torn photo back together, muttering incessantly: “I’m sorry, I’m sorry… I didn’t mean it. I was just… I was just too angry. You were clearly so clean, so pure, but why did you have to go and provoke another man after provoking me? Why…”
As he spoke, he started going crazy again. He grabbed the photo, threw it on the floor, and stomped on it viciously, screaming hysterically: “Why, why, why?!”
A long time later.
Zhang Yihui calmed down again. In his hand, he held a fragment of Xu Jingchu’s photo—the face that remained intact.
There was no expression on his face, and his gaze was cold as ice. He said with a pitying tone, like a judge passing sentence on a prisoner: “Since you are already unclean, I will be the one to end your sin.”
