Chapter 13: Don’t Run Away, My Angel
Huo Yan seemed not to notice the mess on the floor as he stepped out from the shadows, his usually warm and gentle face devoid of expression.
He dialed Secretary Shen’s number. “Find out where Xu Jingchu goes to school.”
Secretary Shen, who had been dispatched to the company to work overtime even on a Sunday, was dazed. “Xu Jingchu? Which Xu Jingchu?”
Huo Yan’s voice remained flat. “He ran away.”
Secretary Shen froze for a full two seconds before taking a sharp breath. “The Pink-Eared Bunny ran away?!”
Just an hour ago, their big boss—who had been single for all twenty-eight years of his life—had suddenly asked him to deliver a pair of slippers to a private villa he rarely visited. The slippers were specifically “soft, cute, and pastel” in size and color.
When he delivered them, he hadn’t seen anyone else, but the Boss—who was clearly in the middle of his Susceptibility Period—had said in an uncharacteristically good mood: “He hasn’t woken up yet. Leave the shoes and you can go.”
Think about it. Think deeply!
An Alpha in heat, with a sleeping “him” tucked away at home—there was no way that was just a friendship! Moreover, the way the Boss said it clearly carried a hint of deliberate showing off.
To summarize, Secretary Shen’s conclusion: The Boss was hiding a sweet, soft Omega in his house!
“I want results within half an hour.”
The familiar yet cold voice came through the phone. Secretary Shen shuddered, and his professional mode kicked in instantly: “Yes, Boss.”
After hanging up, Secretary Shen immediately tossed aside his current work and personally investigated as if his life depended on it. He hadn’t met Xu Jingchu, but as Huo Yan’s most capable secretary, he had plenty of ways to find information on someone in the same city.
Back at the private villa.
Huo Yan sat on the sofa, his fingertip gently brushing the spot where Xu Jingchu had just been sitting, as if he were stroking the boy’s shy, flushed cheek.
“I won’t let you run away…”
My angel.
Meanwhile.
After Xu Jingchu left the hospital, he stood at a crossroads feeling a bit lost.
The doctor had said Huo Yan’s condition was very poor and that he needed his company. However, he felt like something wasn’t quite right. As for what it was, he couldn’t say—it was a total blind spot in his knowledge.
After hesitating for a long while, Xu Jingchu took a bus back to A University.
It wasn’t that he didn’t worry about Huo Yan, but rather that he didn’t remember the address of Huo Yan’s home. Besides, a person as wonderful as Huo Yan must have many friends; surely they would go to accompany him.
For some reason, thinking this didn’t make Xu Jingchu feel relieved. Instead, his chest felt strangely tight.
Back at the dorm, his three roommates hadn’t returned to school yet. Xu Jingchu sat at his desk in a daze, his finger occasionally tapping his phone screen as it dimmed.
He… forgot to ask Huo Yan for his phone number.
They had been apart for less than an hour, yet he missed him so much his whole body felt off. It was very strange; even with his family in his previous life, he had never felt such an emotion.
That night, Xu Jingchu dreamed of Huo Yan.
In the dream, the man’s legs had been broken. He was crawling through the heavy rain using only his hands. Those dark eyes, usually so gentle, were dead and devoid of light.
A group of faceless people stood nearby spitting on him, occasionally kicking him, letting out piercing laughter at his utterly pathetic and defenseless state.
Under the wash of the heavy rain, the man lying in the puddle looked like a fallen deity dragged from an altar into the abyss. Stripped of his steady, elegant demeanor, only a heart-wrenching wretchedness remained.
In the dream, Xu Jingchu was like a spectator, watching the man being beaten and mocked but unable to stop it.
When he woke up, Xu Jingchu found that his pillow was wet, and his chest felt as if it were blocked by a heavy stone.
The sky outside was just beginning to turn gray. Xu Jingchu rubbed his chest and got out of bed in a daze.
It wasn’t until he was standing at the school gates that he snapped back to reality. How… did he end up out here?
Only then did he realize he hadn’t washed up, nor had he changed out of his pajamas. Thankfully it was still early and there weren’t many people around, but even so, his light-yellow pajamas earned him a 100% “head-turn” rate.
Xu Jingchu pursed his lips, a sense of inexplicable grievance welling up in his heart.
After a night had passed, he still missed Huo Yan—missed him with a clawing, restless intensity. Thinking of the man’s tragic state in his dream, Xu Jingchu found it hard to breathe.
He wanted to see Huo Yan!
The thought made him anxious and uneasy.
“Chuchu…”
A familiar deep voice drifted over.
Xu Jingchu looked toward the sound, wondering for a moment if he was hallucinating. Why else would he see Huo Yan?
Ten meters away, next to a black Maybach, the tall man with long legs was walking toward him step by step.
It wasn’t until the man came to a stop in front of him and that familiar, possessive ocean scent enveloped him that Xu Jingchu opened his mouth. “Huo… Huo Yan?”
Thump-thump, thump-thump—
His heartbeat was acting abnormal again.
But strangely, his anxiety and unease were “cured” in an instant.
Huo Yan looked down at the boy standing so close. The pheromones inside his body, which had been suppressed by several shots of inhibitors, sent out signals of pure excitement.
The man’s fingertips trembled slightly. Behave. I like him very much, too, so we can’t scare him away again.
The excited pheromones settled down.
Once certain that the man wasn’t an illusion, a look of uncontainable surprise and excitement appeared on Xu Jingchu’s beautiful face. “Huo Yan, why are you here?”
Seeing how happy he was, Huo Yan was slightly stunned. “You… are happy I’m here?”
“Yes,” Xu Jingchu’s eyes curved into crescents. “Did you come to find me?”
Huo Yan gazed at him intently.
The boy’s eyes were bright and his expression was joyful; he was truly happy.
The boy was happy to see him.
Huo Yan couldn’t help but lose himself for a moment. If he was happy to see him, then why did he run away so suddenly yesterday?
“Huo Yan, you’re so tall.” Xu Jingchu suddenly exclaimed in wonder.
Previously, he hadn’t noticed that the man was so much taller than him. Standing face-to-face, he had to tilt his face up just to see the man’s eyes.
“Did you not sleep well last night?” Xu Jingchu leaned in slightly. “Your eyes are so red.”
A sweet floral scent drifted into his nose. Huo Yan snapped back to his senses. His cold fingertips twitched, suppressing the urge to pull the boy ruthlessly into his arms. He answered seriously in a husky voice: “I am 189 cm tall.” After a pause, he answered the first and second questions: “Yes, I came to find you.”
As for the last question, he didn’t mention that he had waited here all night. When he saw the boy walk out of the school gates just now, he had almost lost control of the impulse to rush over, throw him into the car, and lock him up at home.
Xu Jingchu looked at the man and remembered what the doctor had said—that Huo Yan really needed the company of a friend. Could it be that because he wasn’t there last night, Huo Yan didn’t sleep well?
After a moment’s hesitation, Xu Jingchu stood on his tiptoes and reached out to gently pat the man’s head three times. His voice was soft and sweet: “I’m sorry. I had an emergency yesterday so I left without saying goodbye. Can you forgive me?”
