Chapter 12: In the Future, I’ll Be Gentler.
“Don’t like them?” Huo Yan crouched before him, his narrow dark eyes welling with a depthless tenderness.
Meeting such a gaze, Xu Jingchu’s already irregular heartbeat skipped violently once more. He felt that something was wrong with him. It wasn’t that he disliked the cute slippers, but rather that compared to wearing shoes, he felt… no, it wasn’t just a feeling—he desperately wanted the other man to hold him like he had just now, so that he could press himself tightly against him.
In his previous life, Xu Jingchu hadn’t had much opportunity to interact with people or the world. Most of what he knew came from his family’s descriptions or his own internet searches, which didn’t include the fact that two men could be in a romantic relationship. However, he had his own judgment; his thoughts just now had clearly exceeded the boundaries of friendship.
Xu Jingchu’s hands, hanging at his sides, gripped the air helplessly, unable to understand why he was having such strange thoughts.
“What’s wrong?” Huo Yan’s dark eyes watched him intently. “Is your gland still hurting?”
“Gland?” Xu Jingchu was a bit dazed, not reacting for a moment.
Huo Yan took his hands, slowly enveloping them within his large palms. “I’m sorry. In the future, I’ll be gentler.”
In the future? Gentler?
Xu Jingchu suddenly thought of the helplessness he felt when pressed against the sink, and that strange sensation of his body longing to be filled by something.
He instinctively felt that this was a dangerous topic. Subtly breaking free from the man’s hands, he pressed his back against the slightly cool leather sofa. “Huo… Huo Yan, I’m hungry.”
His soft, waxy voice trembled slightly. To the ears of the Alpha who had temporarily marked him not long ago, it sounded like an aggrieved plea or a spoiled pout.
Huo Yan paused. The pheromones he had just suppressed with an inhibitor showed signs of agitation again. He took a deep breath and, with great restraint, brushed his fingertips against the boy’s translucent earlobe. “Don’t be so spoiled,” he whispered. “Sit here and wait for me obediently.”
Xu Jingchu watched him blankly as he walked into the kitchen. The earlobe that had been touched felt as if it had been lit on fire, radiating heat and turning a deep, blood-like red in the blink of an eye.
Spoiled? When… when was I being spoiled?
And what was with this heartbeat, so fast it felt like it would jump out of his chest?
Xu Jingchu suddenly felt a surge of anxiety. In his previous life, he had spent enough time lying on a hospital bed to be terrified of it; he was scared that something was going wrong with his current body.
No, he couldn’t stay here any longer!
Xu Jingchu took a deep breath, forced himself to stay calm while putting on the slippers the man had prepared for him, and then…
He slipped away.
It wasn’t until he ran outside that Xu Jingchu realized this was a private villa, with no other residences in sight for quite a distance.
Once he reached the main road, he hailed a car directly to the hospital.
Inside the consultation room.
Xu Jingchu looked nervous. “Doctor, I’d like to have my heart checked.”
The doctor kept his eyes on the computer, fingers tapping rapidly on the keyboard. “What’s wrong with your heart?”
Xu Jingchu covered his heart, which had returned to its normal rhythm. “It was beating way too fast just now.”
The doctor: “…?”
The doctor looked away from the computer and sized him up subtly. “What caused the rapid heartbeat?”
“Because of a friend.” Xu Jingchu hesitated for a moment, then emphasized: “A male friend.”
“Is your… friend…” The doctor’s hands left the keyboard, his voice pausing for a second. “Is your boyfriend an Alpha?”
Xu Jingchu had no concept of men being together, so he didn’t catch the ambiguity in the doctor’s words. “Yes, he’s an Alpha.”
The doctor raised an eyebrow. “When your heart was racing, were you two being intimate?”
“He held me,” Xu Jingchu added. “A princess carry.”
The doctor: “Anything else?”
“He touched my earlobe.” To help the doctor understand, Xu Jingchu mimicked Huo Yan by touching his own earlobe. “Just like this.”
Remembering something, he added, “Oh, and before that, he bit me.” Xu Jingchu pulled down his collar, revealing the fresh teeth marks on his gland. “When he bit me, my heart was also racing.”
The doctor glanced at it. “Did your… boyfriend enter his rut?”
Xu Jingchu praised him sincerely, “Doctor, you’re amazing. You even knew that.”
The doctor took a deep breath and said calmly, “There’s nothing wrong with your heart. As for your… boyfriend…”
Xu Jingchu was startled and asked, “What’s wrong with him?”
“When an Alpha is in their rut, they tend to be very clingy toward their…” The doctor originally wanted to say “Omega,” but seeing Xu Jingchu’s slightly furrowed brow, the words changed to, “…friend.”
“You should spend more time with him. If possible, let him feel your presence at all times. Otherwise, he will become anxious and uneasy. In worse cases, he might even self-harm or hurt others.”
“It’s that serious?” This information exceeded Xu Jingchu’s understanding. He looked shocked. “But he seemed quite normal when I left.”
The doctor said patiently, “That’s because you were by his side.”
Xu Jingchu didn’t quite understand. He and Huo Yan were just friends; if the man was in “heat,” shouldn’t he look for a woman? Why did he need him so much?
“Also…” The doctor tapped the desk with his pen to get his attention. “I see you’re quite young. If your… boyfriend really can’t hold back, just let him bite you a few more times. If that still doesn’t work, you can help him out manually—but don’t be foolish enough to let anyone permanently mark you.”
Xu Jingchu was bewildered. “What does that mean?”
The doctor took his confusion for embarrassment and waved him off. “Fine, fine. You’re perfectly healthy. Next!”
Meanwhile.
Huo Yan came out of the kitchen carrying a bowl of freshly cooked porridge. The boy who had been “acting spoiled” just moments ago was nowhere to be seen in the living room.
The man’s gentle gaze instantly darkened. The curve of his lips faded, and his expression was half-hidden in the shadows of the backlight, revealing a hint of loneliness and coldness.
Did his angel… abandon him too?
“Huo Yan is a monster! He’s the one who cursed his parents to death!”
“Can a normal person see clearly in the dark? Can a normal person hear someone whispering through three floors?”
“Huo Yan is a total idiot. Who would be friends with a monster? Every time I sit with him, I’m afraid my privacy will be exposed just by typing on my phone. It’s damn disgusting!”
…
All the harsh voices he had inadvertently heard in the past swirled into Huo Yan’s mind as if they had made an appointment. He gripped the edge of the scalding bowl tightly, not even noticing his fingertips turning red from the heat. At the same time, the pheromones that had just quieted down began to stir wildly. Soon, the aggressive pheromones of a top-tier Alpha filled the entire house, turning frantic as if they wanted to tear the space apart.
“Clang—” The porcelain bowl hit the floor and shattered into pieces, and the carefully made porridge splashed everywhere.
