- Chapter 10.3 - Side Story 2: A Surprising Sight (Saves's Perspective)
“Welcome home, Young Master.”
Saves nodded to the butler, Mittegal, who greeted him, and looked around to check the state of the mansion. The house seemed the same as usual, but Saves did not intend to miss even the smallest detail. He paid close attention, just as he did when he was working.
“Yes, I’m back.”
“Will you be needing dinner?”
“I suppose so. Is everyone in the dining hall?”
“Ye… yes.”
The butler’s hesitant tone made Saves feel hopeful.
“Did something happen?”
Perhaps this was the moment he would be told his wife had run away. Saves asked the question while pretending to be calm.
“No, it’s just that the Young Madam has not been taking her meals in the dining hall.”
“What do you mean?”
Saves could not immediately understand the butler’s words. If she wasn’t eating in the dining hall, where was that girl eating? It didn’t sound like she had run away, which made him feel somewhat disappointed.
“The day after the wedding, the Master called her to breakfast, but the Madam did not prepare a seat for her… Since that day, she has hardly left her room. We haven’t brought her any food at all, so it’s possible she has already run away.”
“What? Have you not checked on her?”
“No, sir.”
A whole week had passed since the wedding. It would be one thing if she had run away, but if she hadn’t, it meant she hadn’t eaten a single thing. If that was the case, she might be collapsed in her room. He had been childishly angry with a sixteen-year-old girl and optimistically thought she would just run away if left alone. His own softness had created a terrible tragedy.
“You should have at least checked on her while bringing food.”
“The Madam ordered us not to go near the Young Madam.”
Saves clicked his tongue loudly in his mind. He knew how cruel his family could be, yet he had done nothing. His mother had been completely against welcoming the daughter of a crooked moneylender as a daughter-in-law. Her pride as a former Earl’s daughter made it impossible for her to accept the girl as his wife. Even if she were just a commoner it would be bad, but she was the daughter of a famous and wicked moneylender.
Despite that, the fact remained that they currently had no money. To maintain their luxury, they had no choice but to welcome a commoner girl with a bad reputation as a wife.
And so, they had taken out all that frustration on the girl who arrived. They would likely claim that whatever happened was the girl’s own doing. They might have even ignored her hoping she would die. That way, they wouldn’t have to return the dowry. Why had Saves not realized his parents were the type of people who would do such things without a second thought? There was no way a servant in this house could disobey his parents.
Saves rushed to the room where his wife stayed, the same one he visited a week ago, and hurriedly threw open the door.
Then, he stood speechless at the sight that jumped into his eyes.
