- Chapter 10.2 - Side Story 1: The Beloved Bride (Saves's Perspective)
It had been one week since the wedding when Saves returned to the Zikkeldocra mansion for the first time in a while.
In truth, he hadn’t been paying attention to the date. Saves did not acknowledge the fact that he was married and had a wife. Knowing that his partner was the daughter of a moneylender with a terrible reputation in the royal capital only made him despise the situation more.
It wasn’t as if Saves wanted a wife. If anything, marriage was a nuisance, and he had no desire for an heir. Although he never wanted it, he was looking away from the fact that the wedding ceremony was already over.
Most likely, his father wanted money and sold his son for the dowry. His father had always had an abnormal obsession with money. Yet, he wasn’t a miser, so he never saved anything. He was always busy struggling to raise funds. Soon, he would probably sell his sister to a rich man as well. To Saves, his family was nothing but a troublesome headache. Even if she was his real sister, he had no intention of helping her.
That was why he felt a shock when he saw the girl who would become his wife for the first time at the wedding. He heard she was sixteen. A bright, innocent, and lovely girl was being married off to a stranger, sold by her father. He was amazed by her innocence as she smiled, seemingly accepting this reality completely.
She looked at Saves with sparkling hazel eyes, as if being loved was only natural. She had probably never been rejected by anyone. One could guess just by looking at her that she was pampered by her parents, as she radiated a happy atmosphere from her entire body. She truly looked happy.
That was why, after the wedding, he asked the servants where her room was and went to see how she would react. Now, he could see how tasteless that was, but at the time, he was driven by a strange sense of self-righteous anger. Perhaps he wanted her to know that the Zikkeldocra house was a terrible den of monsters. He also wanted her to understand that her moneylender father, who supposedly adored her, had pushed her into a horrible family. He wanted to see how devastated she would be once she realized the truth.
However, when he visited the room, although the girl who welcomed him looked tired, the look in her eyes had not changed. They were pure, sparkling eyes. They were eyes full of hope, as if she knew what it was to be loved and believed she could love someone in return. Even after seeing the room, she only had a few sarcastic comments to offer.
This made him incredibly angry. That was why he spat out such harsh words. It was also true that he hoped she would lose all hope in him and the Zikkeldocra family and run away. He knew it was too late to regret being so immature.
A grown man, no matter how much he wanted her to leave, threw nothing but thoughtless words at her, calling her an unhappy bride and saying he wouldn’t sleep with her. He even went as far as pushing her onto the bed just to scare her. He had become flustered by his own uncharacteristic behavior. Feeling embarrassed, he eventually had no choice but to leave the room in silence.
Because of that, he found it hard to go home and had been staying at his workplace. However, the workplace was not meant for long-term stays. His boss found out and urged him to go home for once. That was why he had returned now.
It was dinner time. His family would be in the dining hall. That meant the girl who had become his wife must be there too. Or, perhaps, she had run away long ago. In fact, he hoped she had run away. Saves, who usually never did such a thing, even prayed to God for it.
