Chapter 7: I am Honored to be the First
It was a rare night without dreams.
Lu Siyang opened his eyes, and what met his sight was the cold, hard lines of a man’s jaw. Beneath him was a familiar, soft mattress.
What was going on? He clearly remembered being on the sofa chair on the balcony. Could Fang Lv have…
Lu Siyang lifted his head and discovered that he was actually pressed tightly against Fang Lv’s chest, with one leg even hooked over Fang Lv’s waist…
His earlobes felt a bit hot. He had actually brought a strange man home? And had slept in the other’s arms without any hesitation?
Lu Siyang shifted his body backward, attempting to escape this awkward and ambiguous posture. As his leg lifted just slightly, Fang Lv seemed to sense it and abruptly opened his eyes.
“Morning.”
The deep voice carried the hoarseness of someone who had just woken up. Seeing that Lu Siyang didn’t respond, Fang Lv propped himself up on his arm as if to lean over.
Lu Siyang instinctively backed away. In his movement, he pulled down the blanket covering Fang Lv, revealing a large expanse of bare skin. On the full muscles of his chest, words were tattooed densely.
This was the first time Lu Siyang had seen the content clearly. His brow furrowed slightly; it seemed to be…
“The Heart Sutra.”
Fang Lv spoke.
Lu Siyang looked at Fang Lv in surprise. To actually tattoo the Heart Sutra on his chest—even though Lu Siyang didn’t believe in Buddhism, he knew that this kind of behavior was considered great irreverence.
As if knowing what he was thinking, Fang Lv acted indifferent: “Believing in Buddha is all about sincerity. I carved the sutra on my chest to remind myself of the Buddha’s teachings at every moment. Isn’t that the ultimate expression of sincerity?”
Meeting Fang Lv’s half-smiling gaze, Lu Siyang froze, suddenly feeling that there was some sense to it. Then he shook his head. What sense? Bullshit sense… This man’s name was Fang Lv (meaning ‘rule’ or ‘law’), yet he didn’t follow the rules at all; everything he did was extraordinary and crazy.
Alarm bells rang in Lu Siyang’s brain: do not have any more dealings with this madman.
He sat up, looking at Fang Lv lying on his bed: “I don’t have the habit of bringing strangers home.”
“Oh?” A hint of surprise flashed in Fang Lv’s eyes, followed by a curl of his lips. “I am honored to be the first.”
Lu Siyang’s brow furrowed, and his tone turned dark: “My meaning is, since you’re awake, get the hell out.”
A flash of hurt crossed Fang Lv’s face: “President Lu is truly heartless.”
Saying that, he climbed out of bed and began to slowly put on his clothes with his back turned to Lu Siyang.
Lu Siyang watched coldly, his gaze brushing over Fang Lv’s wheat-colored skin and the undulations of the muscles on his back… He gave a light cough and walked to the door with an unnatural expression, his tone icy: “Hurry downstairs once you’re dressed.”
The bedroom door slammed shut with a “clatter,” leaving Fang Lv alone in the room. Hearing Lu Siyang’s slightly panicked footsteps as he went downstairs, Fang Lv smiled coldly, lowered his head, and began to button his shirt unhurriedly.
By the time Fang Lv came downstairs, Lu Siyang had finished preparing and was standing by the door fastening his cuffs.
Fang Lv jingled the car keys in his hand: “Do you need me to drive you to work for a fee?”
Lu Siyang could guess with his toes what kind of ‘fee’ Fang Lv meant, so he refused without thinking: “No need.”
Fang Lv poured himself a glass of water as if he owned the place, saying as he drank: “Are you sure? It’s rush hour in the city right now. It’ll take at least forty minutes for a driver to get here.”
Lu Siyang’s hand fastening his buttons paused, and he frowned at his watch. How could he have forgotten? His car was sent to the 4S shop yesterday, and the other cars were all parked at the old family manor. Also, regarding the matter Assistant Zhang mentioned on the phone last night, he needed to get to the company as soon as possible to check on the progress.
He glanced at Fang Lv, who was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. There was no other way, he could only…
Throughout the journey, Lu Siyang kept his eyes closed, feigning sleep to avoid Fang Lv saying any more rebellious, crazy words to him. To his surprise, Fang Lv drove obediently and didn’t make any other moves.
Even when the car stopped beneath the Lu Corporation building, Lu Siyang still hadn’t quite recovered.
“President Lu,” Fang Lv pinched a piece of paper with two fingers and stuffed it into Lu Siyang’s suit pocket, “This is my contact information. I’m on call whenever you need.”
Lu Siyang’s lips stiffened, and he gave Fang Lv a cold look: “Thanks, but no thanks.”
“Don’t be so quick to refuse,” Fang Lv didn’t mind his coldness, only smiling, “At least President Lu was satisfied with my technique, wasn’t he?”
“Fang Lv,” Lu Siyang stopped his hand reaching for the car door and turned back to look straight at Fang Lv, “What exactly do you want?”
Their eyes met. In the depths of Fang Lv’s eyes was a heavy emotion that was impossible to see through. After a long while, Fang Lv suddenly gave a light laugh.
“President Lu,” Fang Lv unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned in close, “Are you going to refuse to settle the bill after using me?”
Lu Siyang was stunned for a moment before his lips curled into a sneer: “Boss Fang, surely you don’t mean you want me to take responsibility? We’re all adults, why are you still playing that elementary school game?”
Fang Lv didn’t speak; he only looked into Lu Siyang’s eyes. In his light gray irises, layers upon layers of fire seemed to be burning. That hot, intense gaze forced Lu Siyang to look away. His heart trembled, and he simply shifted his line of sight.
Before he got out of the car, Fang Lv’s voice rang out behind him again.
“President Lu, do you need a pick-up service tonight?”
Feeling inexplicably annoyed, Lu Siyang ignored him and slammed the car door hard.
He stepped into the elevator in a rage, pressing the floor button with force as a way to vent. It was ridiculous when he thought about it—he was the one who had been slept with, yet Fang Lv had the gall to come to his door demanding he take responsibility?
Reason told him he must absolutely stay away from this madman.
He stepped out of the elevator, and as he passed the trash can at the corner of the hallway, he suddenly stopped. The fingers hanging at his side curled, and ultimately, he pulled the slip of paper with the phone number out of his pocket and threw it in without mercy.
After Assistant Zhang finished reporting the progress of the matter, Lu Siyang buried himself in reviewing documents. Looking at the lists of payment approvals, Lu Siyang felt a wave of frustration. Even though they had managed to maintain the status quo, Lu Corporation’s stock price had been continuously falling. Furthermore, the funds invested in early projects could not be recovered for the time being, so the available capital had shrunk significantly.
He rubbed his aching forehead. Just as he was preparing to go wash his face, Assistant Zhang suddenly returned. Seeing Assistant Zhang’s strange expression, Lu Siyang asked, “What is it?”
Assistant Zhang said, “President Lu, someone ordered a bouquet of flowers for you.”
Lu Siyang was stunned. Someone ordered flowers for him? “Bring them in.”
Assistant Zhang stepped aside and carried in a large bouquet of wine-red roses wrapped in black paper. The flowers bloomed intensely and enchantingly; the delicate, moist petals emitted a rich fragrance.
He was dazed for a moment, then heard Assistant Zhang say, “President Lu, this is the card that came with the bouquet.”
He glanced at the card. The handwriting was vigorous and powerful—quite beautiful. Only the content…
It clearly read: “Flowers for a Beauty”—five big words.
He could guess with his toes who sent this. Ignoring Assistant Zhang’s searching look, Lu Siyang calmly took them: “Fine, leave them here.”
As soon as Assistant Zhang walked out, Lu Siyang’s face stiffened, and he threw the flowers under his desk. He buried his head in his work, trying his best to ignore the thing that occupied nearly half the area under his desk, but with every breath, there was always that thick floral scent. The entire office was practically marinated in the scent of roses, annoying him all day.
In the evening when leaving work, Lu Siyang purposely had the elevator stop at the first-floor lobby on his way to the underground parking lot. As expected, he didn’t see Fang Lv’s car.
He sneered in his heart; it seemed it was just talk after all. People like Fang Lv were skilled and practiced in flirting and teasing. Perhaps it was just a casual perfunctory remark, but he had actually taken it somewhat seriously.
Disappointed? Of course that was impossible. He had been troubled by this all day, fearing more harassment from Fang Lv, only to find the man had just been speaking casually.
On the way home, as he passed Fang Lv’s bar, Lu Siyang instinctively glanced over, and his brow furrowed.
“Stop the car.”
The driver was a bit confused but still pulled over as instructed. Lu Siyang rolled down the window and looked across the parking spaces outside the bar.
In front of the bar entrance, Fang Lv stood with a gentle smile, facing a young man. The other man had a slender build, and the neck visible above his collar was white and long. However, his back was to this direction, so his face couldn’t be seen.
For some reason, Lu Siyang had a hunch that the man’s looks were definitely not bad.
The two were talking when Fang Lv suddenly reached out and ruffled the top of the other’s head. Lu Siyang let out a cold snort and withdrew his gaze expressionlessly. To think that after saying he wanted him to take responsibility, he was here hooking up with someone else.
His peripheral vision caught the bouquet of roses on the seat beside him. It was laughable that he had actually planned to take the flowers back with him. He grabbed the roses and threw them straight out of the car window.
Perhaps the movement was a bit large, as Fang Lv and the other person at the bar entrance looked over. He raised the window with a dark face and said to the driver, “Drive.”
Watching the scenery outside the window recede rapidly, the blockage in his chest seemed to dissipate quite a bit. They had only met three times; they could even be considered strangers. Why should he waste his effort and mind? Moreover, having gotten rid of a clinging trouble, he should be happy.
For the next few days, Fang Lv seemed to have suddenly vanished, never appearing before his eyes again. Lu Siyang didn’t bother to look into it either.
Early one morning, Lu Siyang drove his newly repainted Laf to work. Before he even reached the company entrance, a mineral water bottle full of water flew through the air. With a “thud,” it slammed right onto the car hood.
Immediately following that, a short, stout man darted out from the side, spreading his arms and rushing in front of the car like a madman. Lu Siyang was startled and slammed on the brakes.
He got out of the car and saw a small, faint dent on the hood; his anger flared up instantly. He grabbed the stout man by the collar, his voice laced with rage: “What are you doing? If you don’t want to live, go somewhere else. Don’t dirty my car.”
The stout man, however, looked to the side and shouted loudly, “See that? Do you see that! This is a rich person! A human life isn’t even as valuable as his car!”
Lu Siyang had a premonition. He followed the stout man’s gaze and sure enough, several people were standing nearby, pointing their phones in this direction to film.
