Chapter 16: His Birthday and the Lie
“Yes, President Lu.”
Lu Siyang gave a cold sneer. Rongfei Building Materials, huh? Quite an appetite. They’d better be careful not to stretch their mouths too wide, or they might just snap their tongues! Once he dragged out the person behind the scenes, he would absolutely not let the Wang father and son off the hook!
Lu Siyang returned to the top floor from B2. Just as he was about to enter his office, Assistant Zhang spoke up from behind: “President Lu, President Sun wants to invite you for a gathering tonight.”
“Tell him another day.” Lu Siyang rejected it without a second thought. He pushed open the office door and looked back to add, “By the way, tell the driver I won’t need a ride tonight.”
Declining a business dinner and not needing a driver… Assistant Zhang instantly filled in a lot of blanks in his mind. However, as the Chief Assistant of Lu Corporation, his high level of professionalism allowed him to suppress his curiosity as he replied seriously: “Understood, President Lu.”
For the rest of the time, Lu Siyang sat on the sofa, his mind bouncing back and forth between “Should I go change into a new suit?” and “Why the hell should I be so obediently waiting for Fang Lv to pick me up?”
Just as he was wavering, his phone rang again. It was actually Song Ning, one of his “fair-weather” friends whom he hadn’t contacted in a long time.
Lu Siyang picked up the phone, his tone faking surprise: “Yo, Young Master Song. What made a busy man like you think of calling me?”
Song Ning said lazily, “Big birthday boy Lu, how are you planning to spend today?”
Birthday boy? Lu Siyang’s mind went blank, then he heard Song Ning tease: “You didn’t actually forget your own birthday, did you?”
Only then did Lu Siyang remember that today was indeed his birthday. He said sheepishly, “If you hadn’t mentioned it, I really wouldn’t have remembered.”
Song Ning chuckled and asked, “Coming out for a few drinks tonight?”
Lu Siyang opened his mouth, suddenly remembering Fang Lv’s earlier call. For a moment, he didn’t know whether he should refuse.
Sensing his hesitation, Song Ning urged, “You’re so busy lately no one sees you. Last time with Sheng Muyan and the others at the racetrack, you didn’t show up either. How long has it been since we met? Besides, this isn’t cutting into your working hours.”
“How about… tomorrow?” Lu Siyang’s tone was slightly apologetic. “I really have something tonight.”
“What could be more important than President Lu’s birthday?” Song Ning said bluntly. “Alright, alright, they’ve already booked a room for you at Bishui Bay. Come straight over after work, we’re all waiting!”
“I don’t—”
Beep beep beep…
Before he could finish, Song Ning hung up.
Now, he was even more conflicted than before. Lu Siyang stood up and paced from one end of the office to the other, his face full of hesitation. On one side were his friends excitedly waiting to celebrate his birthday, and on the other… was Fang Lv.
He hadn’t seen Fang Lv for three or four days, but… he was still brooding over Fang Lv’s previous deception…
After hesitating for a long time, Lu Siyang finally picked up his phone and sent a WeChat message to Fang Lv. He scrambled to make up an excuse, saying he had to work overtime and would be back late.
After a long while, Fang Lv replied with a single word: “Okay.”
Seeing that he had typed a long string of words only to receive this one simple character, Lu Siyang felt a flicker of anger in his heart. Just ‘Okay’???
If Fang Lv didn’t care himself, then why should he overthink it! The guilt he felt for breaking their ‘agreement’ vanished instantly.
Bishui Bay Entertainment City was an asset of Song Ning’s family and a favorite gathering spot for young socialites. Before seven o’clock, the parking lot was already filled with luxury cars.
Before Lu Siyang’s bright red LaFerrari even entered the gate, the valet hurriedly came to greet him. He looked in the rearview mirror and ran his hands through his neatly combed hair, letting a few strands fall messily across his forehead. Coming out with this crowd, wearing a suit and a slicked-back hairstyle would inevitably lead to being teased.
He unbuttoned his coat and tossed it into the back seat, loosened his tie, and fumbled in the storage compartment of the driver’s door. He pulled out a limited-edition pendant worth seven figures that had been gathering dust for a long time, hung it around his neck, and finally stepped out of the car with satisfaction.
By the time Lu Siyang arrived at the private room, almost everyone was there. The moment he pushed the door open, he was met with jeers from the group of young masters.
“Our big birthday boy is here!”
“Thank you, President Lu, for taking time out of your busy schedule to grace us with your presence!”
“One day apart feels like three autumns, so it must have been centuries for us!”
Lu Siyang didn’t bother wasting his breath, only laughing and cursing: “Scram, scram, scram. Stop being so annoying.”
Song Ning and a few others were playing dice. Seeing him arrive, Song Ning shook the dice cup: “Come, come, play a few rounds!”
Just as Lu Siyang sat down, Song Ning gave a look to the boy sitting next to him: “I didn’t lie to you, did I? President Lu is handsome, dashing, and romantic—exactly your type.”
The boy looked about eighteen or nineteen, with a layer of foundation as thick as plaster on his face. His long eyelashes, sharp enough to stab someone, flickered twice at Song Ning as he said shyly, “Young Master Song, why are you always teasing me?”
“Go on,” Song Ning pushed the boy, feigning annoyance, “your eyes are practically glued to President Lu. Go sit next to him!”
The boy pursed his lips in a smile and sat down close to Lu Siyang. A cloying, sweet floral scent hit his nose. Lu Siyang leaned against the sofa armrest on the other side, unobtrusively moving his body away.
Unexpectedly, the boy was bold. Seeing him back away, the boy’s chest leaned further forward. Lu Siyang was extremely averse to excessive physical closeness, but for the sake of Song Ning’s face, he didn’t lose his temper. To avoid any further intimate movements, he casually made small talk: “What’s your name?”
The boy said daintily, “My name is Honey~”
Honey? How direct…
Lu Siyang felt a chill of disgust in his heart, but his lips carried a seductive smile: “It suits you well.”
“Everyone says so,” Honey blushed and couldn’t help but look Lu Siyang up and down. “President Lu, your physique is really great.”
Lu Siyang gave a polite smile: “Is that so?”
Honey, seeing his perfunctory smile, thought he didn’t believe it and said seriously, “Really, you have the best body of any young master I’ve seen. Look at Young Master Wang from Rongfei Building Materials—when I saw him a few months ago, he was so fat he couldn’t even fit in a single-person sofa!”
Lu Siyang’s pupils constricted, and his tone darkened: “Young Master Wang from Rongfei Building Materials?”
The private room suddenly went silent, and everyone turned to look. Song Ning, who was having fun with the dice, turned around and glared at Honey, rebuking: “On such a great day, why mention that dog-thing? How unlucky!”
Everyone in the circle knew by now that Wang Fa had offended Lu Siyang and couldn’t survive in Shan Province, scurrying back to He Province in disgrace. How did this idiot dare to mention Wang Fa in front of Lu Siyang?
Honey’s face turned pale from the scolding. Realizing he had said the wrong thing, he shrank into a corner of the sofa and didn’t dare open his mouth again. Seeing this, the other young masters looked at each other and said nothing. Song Ning’s face was also a bit unpleasant, and the atmosphere became stiff for a moment.
Lu Siyang’s gaze swept across the room, and he suddenly let out a light laugh. He leaned back against the sofa, looking at Song Ning with a casual, indifferent tone: “Young Master Song, why so fierce? Look how you’ve scared him.”
Song Ning was socially adept and reacted immediately, turning to Honey and saying playfully, “Oh look at you, I only said one word and President Lu is already heartbroken for you.”
Seeing that Lu Siyang wasn’t upset, the crowd joined in the teasing, and the atmosphere livened up again. Lu Siyang picked up his wine glass, and Honey quickly poured red wine for him: “President Lu, I was just talking nonsense earlier, please don’t mind.”
“It’s fine,” Lu Siyang took a shallow sip and said as if coincidentally, “You said you met Wang Fa. When was that?”
“Two months ago, I think it was September 12th…” Honey said with certainty. “Yes, that was the day.”
September 12th? Wasn’t that just a few days after he had been drugged?
Lu Siyang seemed to have caught a key detail and intentionally raised an eyebrow: “I didn’t expect you and Young Master Wang to be so close.”
Hearing this, Honey hurriedly explained: “No, no, no! I went to a bar with friends that day! It was, it was—” Honey frowned and thought for a moment, “The one on Chunhe Road, or… over on Futing Street… President Lu, I drank too much that day and forgot exactly which one it was. I just happened to see Young Master Wang in the bar lobby. I’m not close to him! And there was someone else beside him…”
Lu Siyang narrowed his eyes and asked casually, “Who?”
“It seemed…” Honey tried hard to recall for a long while, speaking intermittently, “It was a tall, thin man. His appearance… he should be quite good-looking… the light was too dim inside, I didn’t see clearly.”
Lu Siyang pondered for a moment and asked again, “Which bar specifically, do you remember?”
As expected, Honey shook his head. Lu Siyang didn’t press further. As long as he went back and had someone check the surveillance, things would likely become clear.
Seeing Lu Siyang’s good-tempered manner, Honey grew bold enough to lean in, his wrist winding around Lu Siyang’s arm like a snake. His cloying tone carried a deep meaning: “President Lu… why don’t you give me more time? Maybe I’ll remember…” As he spoke, a finger traced circles along the seam of Lu Siyang’s trousers. “How about we find a place tonight and think about it together…”
Lu Siyang suppressed the wave of nausea in his throat and gave him a deep look: “That depends on your performance.”
After playing a few rounds of dice and with the time just past eight o’clock, Lu Siyang couldn’t sit still. He pulled out his phone several times to check for new WeChat notifications. For the nth time, Lu Siyang was so distracted he didn’t hear the dice count. Song Ning finally couldn’t take it anymore.
“I say, President Lu, what is with you? You come out to play with us and your eyes haven’t left your phone all night. Wait, you aren’t—” Song Ning suddenly seemed to think of something, his face full of realization, “is there a situation?”
Lu Siyang’s expression stiffened. He thought to himself that this kid was a good guesser. On the surface, he feigned indifference: “What situation could I have? Just play your dice.”
