- Chapter 64.2 - Unstoppable Contradictions
When Cang Lan Heard the News of Yu Xuanji’s Pregnancy…
While Cang Lan was scolding her subordinates, An Zhi and Ting Lan slipped into the bedroom. They found Yu Xuanji reading a book with great interest.
“What is it?” Yu Xuanji asked.
An Zhi stood by, her eyes fixed on Yu Xuanji’s flat stomach. “Mistress, are you really with child? You’re human and she’s a dragon. Even if there’s no species barrier, you’re both women… Is this some kind of demon fetus?”
Yu Xuanji closed the “Parenting Manual” Cang Lan had written and said, “The child is indeed mine and A-Lan’s. As for how it happened, you don’t need to know.”
Ting Lan said worriedly, “Mistress, it’s not that we don’t like it, but the risk of bearing a dragon’s child is too great. What if something never-before-seen is born?”
Yu Xuanji’s lips curved. “It’s all an unknown, but don’t worry. I’ve checked the fetus. If it can be born, it should be a beautiful little black dragon just like A-Lan.”
An Zhi finally breathed a sigh of relief. “As long as it doesn’t have Cang Lan’s personality, I don’t care how many there are. I’ll love them all.”
Yu Xuanji raised an eyebrow. “Is A-Lan so bad?”
An Zhi immediately grew indignant. “Mistress, don’t even get me started! She’s only good to you. She oppresses Ting Lan and me, steals our phones and snacks… Out of my twenty power banks, she’s drained over a dozen just binge-watching Empresses in the Palace. I’m going to puke if I see it again.”
Yu Xuanji patted her belly and smiled. “That’s because you only downloaded that one show. A-Lan likes listening to me read Dream of the Red Chamber. If you have it on your phone, let her see it.”
An Zhi collapsed onto the floor. “Mistress, you’ve changed! You just spoil her! You used to rarely smile at us, and now your grin reaches your ears! Have you forgotten our centuries of loyalty?”
Yu Xuanji’s smile faded slightly. Her gaze fell on a nearby frame where Cang Lan had framed a small “dragon cracker.” “I know you two worked hard coming here. The Desolate Wilderness is dangerous, but it can be opened from the outside. However, if it opens, the monsters here will escape and cause chaos in the three realms. I must find a foolproof way.”
Ting Lan suggested, “Senior Phoenix is very powerful. Let’s ask her for help. Maybe we can leave safely.”
Yu Xuanji composed herself. “We shall see. It’s been so long. I wonder how Bai Lin is doing.”
“Director Bai is reliable,” An Zhi laughed.
Yu Xuanji gave a disdainful smirk. “Reliable? If he were reliable, Yu Linlang wouldn’t have escaped. We still don’t know where she is.”
Ting Lan said, “Mistress, don’t worry. She’s just a living corpse now. She’s lived for a thousand years; her body can’t hold out much longer.”
Yu Xuanji’s eyes turned cold. “To maintain her youthful face, she possessed so many people. She is covered in blood and curses. I cannot kill her; anyone who does will suffer a backlash. If you encounter her, do not strike.”
As the three discussed how to bring Yu Linlang to justice without suffering the backlash, Cang Lan walked in with a light step. Seeing the trio huddled together with dark expressions, Yu Xuanji’s smile returned instantly.
“A-Lan, what’s happening outside? I heard a commotion.”
Cang Lan lowered her head. “My lady, you told me not to tell anyone about the pregnancy. When Huang Liu and the others were chatting, some crows heard. Now the whole wilderness knows. The demon kings from every mountain are coming to congratulate us and are asking for the full-month wine feast.”
An Zhi’s eyes widened. “A full-month feast? But she just got pregnant!”
Yu Xuanji laughed helplessly. “The little demons here are bored and love gossip. It gets distorted as it spreads. A-Lan, since they know, let’s not hide it. With you here, I am at peace.”
Just then, Huang Liu rushed in. Seeing everyone there, he held out some dark green scales. “King! We were patrolling near the Dragon Pool and found these extremely hard green scales behind the mountain. They look like dragon scales, so we brought them for you to see.”
Yu Xuanji’s smile vanished when she saw the scales. “A-Lan, what are these?”
Cang Lan sniffed the scales, detecting a faint scent of blood. She felt the edges. “Not dragon scales. They look like jiao – flood dragon/serpent scales. Did you find anything else during your patrol?”
Huang Liu shook his head. “No, but last night I thought I saw the Lady…”
His words cut off as he met Yu Xuanji’s ice-cold gaze. He swallowed the rest of his sentence and said cautiously, “I must have been hallucinating. We found nothing else all night.”
Cang Lan burned the scales to ash. “I didn’t sense any jiāo presence last night, but these are definitely from one. There’s a strange fragrance… it’s likely in its mating season.”
Yu Xuanji said, “It probably caught the scent of your heat. This jiāo came from afar wanting to—”
“Don’t say it, my lady!” Cang Lan sat beside Yu Xuanji and grabbed her wrist. “Regardless of what it is, stay on high alert. My lady is pregnant and I am in heat. If some opportunistic monster targets us, it will be troublesome. I don’t want any bloodshed that might upset the child. Accumulating merit is the most important thing.”
Huang Liu shuddered. She never expected the words “accumulating merit” to come from Cang Lan. She had been with Cang Lan since the conquest of the wilderness and had seen the King crush countless skulls with her bare claws.
Yu Xuanji didn’t know the Cang Lan of old was a tyrant. Now, centuries later, Cang Lan seemed to prefer a peaceful, hidden life.
Huang Liu knew the truth, but she didn’t dare speak. The “playful and innocent” Cang Lan was a persona. No one knew the King’s bloody past better than her three great demon subordinates.
In the kitchen, Cang Lan was attempting to make sponge cakes. When she lifted the lid, steam billowed out. She pinched a piece, sniffed it, and took a bite. Her eyes lit up. “Delicious!”
Beside her, An Zhi had made a batch of perfectly round cakes. “Look at mine,” An Zhi said proudly. “Much rounder than yours.”
Cang Lan huffed. “What’s so good about being round? My lady prefers mine.”
“You—!” An Zhi was speechless.
Ting Lan acted as the peacemaker. “Alright, the Mistress must be hungry. Let her eat.”
Cang Lan carried her misshapen cakes to the bedroom. Yu Xuanji was leaning against the headboard. “My lady, the cakes are ready. I made them myself. Come try them.”
Yu Xuanji put down her book—she had been annotating Dream of the Red Chamber so Cang Lan could understand it.
As Yu Xuanji lifted the quilt, Cang Lan immediately supported her waist, moving with extreme gentleness as if touching a fragile feather.
“A-Lan, you don’t have to be like this. Let me move around a bit.”
Cang Lan shook her head stubbornly. “No. I must ensure your safety. Before, I listened to you, but now you must hold my hand and never leave my side.”
Yu Xuanji smiled sweetly. “Fine. I won’t leave you for even a step.”
“It’s not that I want to limit your freedom,” Cang Lan said. “Ting Lan told me that’s called ‘imprisonment’ and would make you unhappy. But the wilderness is dangerous. Do you know how many eyes are on you?”
“Why?” Yu Xuanji was puzzled.
Cang Lan bit her lip. “A dragon egg can gather the essence of heaven and earth to nourish the mother. Once it appears, greedy people will come. Many might covet your body. I wish the egg were in my belly instead; then no one would dare touch it.”
Yu Xuanji stroked her belly. It felt the same as before, though occasionally there was a slight ache, as if the egg were growing. “We are one, A-Lan. If you feel guilty, how about this: after I lay the egg, if it hasn’t hatched, you can incubate it.”
Cang Lan agreed immediately. “Deal! I’ll hatch it. The egg is like a protective shield for you, but I hate that you have to carry the burden.”
Yu Xuanji leaned her forehead against Cang Lan’s chest. “It’s not a burden. I chose this.”
Cang Lan had once worried about using a child to keep her, but Yu Xuanji felt the same way. She felt like a rootless weed, always fearing that Cang Lan might not love her as much as she thought. This lie was a snowball getting bigger and bigger, and she could only swallow the truth for as long as possible.
Yu Xuanji took a bite of a cake. “A-Lan… I haven’t figured out how to be a mother. I’m a bit scared.”
Cang Lan’s hand shook. “Me too. I don’t know how to raise a child. Will it be huge as soon as it’s born?”
“I don’t know,” Yu Xuanji said. “I’ve studied human birth, but never oviparous animals.”
“My lady is so learned,” Cang Lan chirped. “I don’t understand those words.”
Yu Xuanji ruffled her hair. “Oviparous means hatching from an egg, like chickens or snakes. You hatched from a dragon egg, so you’re oviparous too.”
“I see! My lady is so smart. But how do humans do it? If you lay an egg, where does it come out?”
Yu Xuanji leaned into Cang Lan’s ear and whispered, “Silly… from the same place you always use your tail-tip to enter.”
Cang Lan turned bright red and covered her face. “You said it on purpose! You could have… you could have said it differently!”
Yu Xuanji tilted Cang Lan’s chin up. “Am I wrong? You love using your tail. Your hands aren’t nearly as flexible; once they’re in, they don’t even dare move.”
Cang Lan tried to hide, but Yu Xuanji wrapped her legs around the dragon’s waist, pulling her close.
Perhaps because of the pregnancy, the cold fragrance on Yu Xuanji had become sweet, like the cakes. It made Cang Lan want to taste every inch of her. Remembering what An Zhi and Ting Lan said about no intimacy during pregnancy, Cang Lan swallowed hard, trying to suppress her urges.
“My lady, no… the baby might get hurt.”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “Who told you that?”
“An Zhi and Ting Lan. They also said—”
Yu Xuanji cut her off by pulling her down for a kiss. Cang Lan’s body began to heat up.
“Don’t listen to them,” Yu Xuanji whispered. “I’m carrying a dragon egg. Do you think it breaks that easily?”
Cang Lan glanced at her. “The egg won’t break, but I’m in heat. I can’t control my desires. I’m afraid I’ll break you.”
Yu Xuanji’s breath hitched. Her lips, now moist and red, brushed against Cang Lan’s. “Then do you know… pregnant women are the most easily aroused? Their desires are the hardest to quell. If you don’t help me, I’ll be the one who breaks.”
Before Cang Lan could refuse again, Yu Xuanji was already sitting in her lap, showering her neck and throat with kisses.
“A-Lan, I want it. You said you’d satisfy my every request. Do you really want me to suffer?”
Amidst the sound of heavy breathing and soft kisses, Yu Xuanji murmured into her ear:
“Now… I want you to fill me.”
