- Chapter 57.2 - Post-Coital Payment, Suck a Little Harder
Cang Lan had learned some dough-kneading and pulling techniques, and she easily produced some thin noodles. She boiled them in a pot of water, prepared some seasoning in a bowl, and fried an egg.
After scooping the cooked noodles into the soup bowl, Cang Lan poured a ladle of original broth over them, covered them with the boiled green vegetables and the egg, and added a handful of chopped scallions.
A steaming bowl of Yangchun Noodles was ready.
Cang Lan carried the bowl to the bedroom. Yu Xuanji was sitting at the dressing table combing her hair. Smelling a faint fragrance, she turned her head and saw Cang Lan standing beside her with a bowl of noodles, saying with a grin, “My lady, happy birthday.”
Yu Xuanji was stunned. Her lips moved, and she realized belatedly that today was indeed her birthday. She was so dazed that she even forgot to put down the wooden comb, leaving it stuck in her hair.
Cang Lan placed the noodles on the table in the parlor, smiling as she took the wooden comb from Yu Xuanji’s hair. She helped her up slowly and walked her to the table to sit. “My lady, I made Longevity Noodles for you. It won’t be too late to finish grooming after you’ve eaten.”
With her long hair draped over her shoulders and wearing only thin inner garments, Yu Xuanji sat at the table holding the bowl of noodles, seemingly unsure where to start.
Seeing this, Cang Lan smiled, picked up the chopsticks, and handed them to Yu Xuanji. “My lady, don’t just look. The noodles will get cold in a moment. They taste best while hot. Remember to eat all the noodles and drink all the soup.”
Yu Xuanji nodded blankly. She picked up the charred yellow fried egg and took a bite. The first bite resulted in a “crack” as she bit into a piece of eggshell.
“…”
Yu Xuanji looked up and met Cang Lan’s bright, sparkling eyes. She chewed the piece of eggshell and swallowed it, smiling. “It’s delicious.”
Cang Lan laughed. “Then my lady must eat it all. No wasting allowed.”
Yu Xuanji slowly swallowed the egg, nodding with a choke in her voice. “Mhm, I will eat it all.”
Cang Lan cupped her cheeks with both hands, staring unblinkingly at Yu Xuanji eating the noodles, occasionally letting out a silly laugh.
A gentle breeze blew; in the blink of an eye, it was almost May, and clothing had become much thinner.
Cang Lan wore a light purple gauzy robe, revealing a large expanse of snowy white skin at her chest.
When Yu Xuanji finished her noodles and looked up, her gaze was drawn to the snowy white at Cang Lan’s chest, and she couldn’t help but freeze for a moment.
As soon as Cang Lan turned her head, Yu Xuanji hurriedly lowered her gaze, drank the last sip of the savory soup, and then hid her face behind the bowl. However, her two exposed ears turned red.
Cang Lan chuckled, resting her chin on one hand while using a fan to cool herself. She smiled. “What was my lady looking at just now that made her ears turn so red? Is it from the heat or something else?”
Yu Xuanji put down the bowl and said with mock anger, “Stop talking nonsense. I’m just hot from finishing the noodles; that’s why my ears are red.”
Cang Lan took off her outer gauze layer, revealing her snowy white arms and rounded shoulders. Her entire body seemed as though carved from snowy, lustrous jade, emitting a translucent glow in the hazy morning light.
Yu Xuanji’s breath hitched. The heart inside her left chest throbbed violently. Her hands hung at her sides, twisting her skirt, her palms breaking out in sweat.
Seeing Yu Xuanji staring at her, seemingly dazed, Cang Lan held her small silk fan and lightly traced it over the skin of her own arm. Then, she used the fan to tilt Yu Xuanji’s chin, stood up, leaned over, and slowly moved closer.
Yu Xuanji’s lips were tightly closed, her neck stiff. She couldn’t control the swallowing of her throat. The moment Cang Lan’s lips pressed against hers; she slowly closed her eyes.
This ambiguous, subtle kiss was fleeting, like a dragonfly skimming the water—so quick that Yu Xuanji felt almost nothing.
The scent of Cang Lan’s lips seemed to linger on her own. Yu Xuanji pursed her lips and subconsciously licked them. Upon meeting Cang Lan’s smiling eyes, she stood up angrily and walked outside.
Yu Xuanji didn’t even know what she was angry about.
She was angry that Cang Lan was so skilled at seducing her, yet stopped right when she was becoming lost in the moment. She was also angry that Cang Lan was such a master at this; if she hadn’t done this with others before, how could she be so soul-stirring, making her heart so chaotic?
Seeing Yu Xuanji’s back turned to her, seemingly angry again, Cang Lan embraced her from behind and murmured, “My lady, today is your birthday. Why are you sulking with me? Was the bowl of noodles not to your taste?”
Yu Xuanji shook her head. She couldn’t explain what she was angry about. In short, she felt uncomfortable in her heart, wanting to vent but unable to find the source. Even she felt it was somewhat inexplicable.
Cang Lan pressed close against Yu Xuanji’s thin, boney back, resting her chin in the crook of her neck. She said softly, “Today is my lady’s birthday. If you are unhappy, speak of what is bothering you. Don’t keep it inside; if you suffer, I suffer with you.”
Yu Xuanji turned around, hugged Cang Lan’s waist tightly, and pressed their foreheads together. She murmured, “I don’t know. I truly was angry with you just now, but I don’t know why. Now, thinking about being angry with you, I’m starting to be angry with myself.”
Cang Lan placed a hand gently on Yu Xuanji’s lower abdomen and smiled. “That my lady can tell me exactly what she is thinking is true sincerity. If you keep it hidden, it will turn into a deep-seated ailment over time, harmful to both body and mind.”
Yu Xuanji walked to the swing in the courtyard, pulled Cang Lan’s hand to sit on it, and lowered her head as she swayed slightly. She said hesitantly, “Actually, what I am angry about is that in all the days we have been together, you have never consummated our marriage. Even our kisses are just brief touches, that’s why…”
Cang Lan suddenly understood. “Is my lady resentful that I am not being intimate with you?”
Yu Xuanji lowered her eyes, her cheeks turning bright red, and nodded shyly. “Mhm.”
Cang Lan grasped her palm, slowly interlacing her fingers with Yu Xuanji’s. She said solemnly, “Previously, I felt my lady’s body was unwell and feared you couldn’t withstand the power of a dragon. If my lady wants it, then we shall consummate tonight. Let me make some preparations.”
Yu Xuanji hurriedly grabbed Cang Lan’s arm and murmured, “I didn’t mean that. I just… I just have this illusion of being drifted apart, a fear of loss.”
Cang Lan cupped Yu Xuanji’s face and dropped a gentle kiss on her forehead, smiling. “My lady, in this life, I have only you.”
Under her panic, Yu Xuanji blurted out almost instinctively, “Then what if I die! Would you fall in love with someone else? Slowly forgetting me.”
Realizing her loss of composure, Yu Xuanji’s lips trembled as she spoke the dark, bitter words stuck in her throat: “You told me before that you left the immortal island to find a mate and breed offspring together. You have your responsibilities and pursuits. I am merely an insignificant person in your long years. Time will slowly erode everything; perhaps you will eventually forget me.”
“No!” Cang Lan tightened her grip on Yu Xuanji’s hands and said softly, “How can my lady say such things? After these many days together, do you still not know my character? I know my lady fears loss, but I have only one thing to say: rest assured.”
At first, Cang Lan didn’t know why Yu Xuanji was always worrying about the future, occasionally getting up in the middle of the night to sigh in sorrow. Later, she finally understood; under the disparity of absolute strength and lifespan, the weak are often more self-deprecating and pained.
But wasn’t Cang Lan the same? Watching the person, you love gradually grow old is the most tragic torture in the world.
Cang Lan touched her heart, turned her head to meet Yu Xuanji’s eyes which were faintly bloodshot, and stood up slowly.
Her head felt dizzy. The moment she stood up, Cang Lan pinched her temples with one hand, staggering back a few steps until her back hit Yu Xuanji’s chest.
Her waist suddenly went soft. Cang Lan closed her eyes. When she opened them again, her head felt like it was splitting. She clutched her head and shouted “My lady” in a raspy voice. Something ice-cold was pressed against her cheek.
Three days had passed since Cang Lan woke from her drunken stupor. Yu Xuanji hadn’t expected that a single cup of wine would make Cang Lan sleep for three days and three nights.
During these three days, Cang Lan had been talking in her sleep. Yu Xuanji stayed by her side without rest, and the more she heard, the more heart-stopping it became.
Ming Huang hadn’t returned for three days, so Yu Xuanji carried Cang Lan back to Longtan to look after her for the three days, waiting for her to wake up.
On the bed, Cang Lan slowly opened her eyes and met Yu Xuanji’s haggard face. She moved her lips, let out a soft moan, propped herself up with her arms, and said in a raspy voice, “My lady.”
Yu Xuanji said in surprise, “A-Lan, you’re finally awake.”
Cang Lan was stunned. “My lady, how long did I sleep? I remember it was your birthday. We were talking on the swing, then you started crying, and I comforted you, and then… then…”
Yu Xuanji’s eyes suddenly widened. She said with a choke, “Have you forgotten? Three days ago, we were guests at Senior Ming Huang’s house. you had some wine and got drunk.”
Cang Lan rubbed her head and swayed. “But I clearly remember it was your birthday and I made you a bowl of Yangchun Noodles. Did I dream again?”
Yu Xuanji cracked a smile and said, “You probably mixed up your dreams with reality. You slept for three days and were talking in your sleep. I was so scared I didn’t dare leave you.”
