- Chapter 54.1 - The Evil Dragon’s Complaint—Wife, My Hand Hurts, She Bullied Me
A sudden thunderclap exploded. In the blink of an eye, dark clouds tumbled and the world turned dim, wrapping the entire Wilderness in shadow.
Yu Xuanji stood within a shimmering golden protective shield, slowly retreating according to Cang Lan’s instructions. Her gaze fell upon the window of the nearby bedroom; her eyes lingered for a moment before she began walking toward it.
Lu Xuan saw through her intentions and waved a hand to set up a barrier, isolating Yu Xuanji outside.
Yu Xuanji’s eyes darkened as she was struck by an extremely powerful force. Fortunately, protected by the spiritual shield Cang Lan had set up, she remained unharmed.
Cang Lan called out anxiously, “Wife!”
Yu Xuanji smiled at her. “No matter, I am fine. Be careful.”
With that, Yu Xuanji lifted her skirt and scurried behind a door with small steps, shouting, “A-Lan! Flatten her!”
Cang Lan curled her lips into a smile. “As you command.”
Watching the two of them acting so lovey-dovey, Lu Xuan felt a surge of inexplicable anger. It was annoying to look at, yet deeply enviable.
Seeing the spring flowers in full bloom across the garden, Lu Xuan frowned. “Let us take this to the sky.”
Cang Lan, fearing their battle would affect Yu Xuanji, transformed into her true form and leaped upward.
Lu Xuan transformed into a pitch-black giant beast with fangs and sharp horns. Suddenly, two sky-covering wings sprouted from the beast’s back as she followed closely behind Cang Lan.
Standing in the courtyard, Yu Xuanji watched the two giant beasts fighting in the sky. Standing outside the bedroom door, she used her bare hands to tear open the barrier Lu Xuan had set, slowly pushing the door open and walking inside.
The interior was clean and tidy. Yu Xuanji passed through layers of gauze curtains and stood by the bedside, only to be taken aback by what she saw.
Ming Huang lay on the bed with her eyes tightly shut, her snow-white hands resting on her lower abdomen. Her exposed skin was covered in red marks, a shocking sight.
Yu Xuanji frowned and took a step back, but at that moment, Ming Huang suddenly opened her eyes.
Ming Huang looked at the startled Yu Xuanji and gave her a slight smile.
Yu Xuanji breathed a sigh of relief and asked worriedly, “Senior, you are—”
Ming Huang said helplessly, “I did something wrong and received some punishment. I heard the fighting outside just now. Is it A-Lan and A-Xuan?”
Yu Xuanji nodded. “Yes. A-Lan realized that this A-Xuan is not the same as the other. Senior, what exactly is going on?”
Ming Huang’s brow furrowed slightly. She lowered her eyes and propped herself up with weak arms, grabbing the clothes hanging on the screen to cover her body. “She is Lu Xuan, yet she is not the A-Xuan who stayed with me for a thousand years.”
The more Yu Xuanji heard, the more surprised she became. Standing by the bed, she asked in confusion, “Why is that? However, I saw a black shadow shrouding A-Xuan’s body earlier, and her soul was emitting streaks of black energy. Could it be—”
Ming Huang gritted her teeth as she rose from the bed, tying her waistband as she spoke. “Exactly so. When the world was first created, a demon beast beyond the three realms was born from the chaos. Later, I took the opportunity to bring it back to Mount Danxue, hoping to slowly purify it one day to prevent it from wreaking havoc on the world and causing a catastrophe.”
Yu Xuanji asked, “The demon beast you speak of… it wouldn’t be Lu Xuan, would it?”
Ming Huang said, “Yes. I gave her a human name and taught her to read, write, and recite scriptures. Little did I know she would be so unruly. She feigned reform to make me lower my guard, sealed my spiritual power, and imprisoned me in her nest for a thousand years.”
Yu Xuanji frowned. “And then?”
Ming Huang’s gaze was deep as she looked into the distance. “Later, while she was undergoing a tribulation, I split her soul into two—one good and one evil, one black and one white. In the end, her tribulation failed, and she was at death’s door. When her soul was about to dissipate, I—”
Yu Xuanji guessed, “Senior gave everything of your Phoenix body to save her. Am I right?”
Ming Huang closed her eyes and choked out, “Yes, I couldn’t bear to let her die. After my nirvana, I took the other half of her soul and left Mount Danxue for the Wilderness, staying here for all these years.”
As many years passed, she thought Lu Xuan’s other soul had slowly vanished with time. Who would have thought it would spiral out of control, even surpassing the demon who tried to incite a bloodbath back then.
Ming Huang stood up, easily shattering the barrier outside the door. She looked back with a smile. “Enough talk. Lu Xuan’s power is not inferior to mine. A-Lan must be struggling by now. I will go assist her.”
In the blink of any eye, Ming Huang transformed into a fiery red phoenix, her wings wrapped in golden flames as she slowly rose into the sky.
Standing in the courtyard, Yu Xuanji brushed her fingertips against the smooth stair railing and gathered the winter jasmine petals scattering in the wind.
Cang Lan stood upon the clouds, her gaze sharp. Looking at the red-eyed Lu Xuan, she pointed her spear at her. “Come out!”
Lu Xuan’s eyes were full of mockery as she laughed. “This seat is the genuine Lu Xuan. You are but a little dragon who received some enlightenment. To think you dare point a spear at me. You lack your protective heart scale and your strength is far below what it once was. I advise you to have some self-awareness.”
Cang Lan smiled disdainfully. “I see this soul of yours has lived for many years. Such an old, worn-out soul… I believe before long, it will slowly dissipate and pass from this world, turning into a mere gust of wind after death.”
Lu Xuan, hearing the little dragon call her old, gritted her teeth and smiled. “You dare call this seat old?”
Cang Lan shrugged with a smile. “I didn’t say that. Whoever speaks up is the one being talked about.”
Lu Xuan gave a sinister smile. “Sharp-tongued. I shall skin you and pull out your tendons to use as a belt.”
Cang Lan laughed. “Oh, listen to that. For a moment, I couldn’t tell if you were Lu Xuan or A-Xuan.”
Lu Xuan held a giant, pitch-black scythe and swung it fiercely toward Cang Lan. Just as Cang Lan was about to strike back, a red-gold protective shield enveloped her.
Cang Lan looked closely and saw a phoenix emitting fiery light arriving slowly. The cry of the phoenix echoed across the horizon, and even the sky-blotting dark clouds began to dissipate, replaced by drifting colorful mists.
Lu Xuan froze. Looking at Ming Huang blocking her way, she said with bitter resentment, “Master, it seems I am not the one you pity most in this world.”
Ming Huang turned around, her eyes quietly watching Lu Xuan as she slowly walked toward her.
Cang Lan stood behind and said, “Old Phoenix! Don’t go!”
Ming Huang did not speak. She walked slowly to Lu Xuan and reached out her right hand. “A-Xuan, let us go home.”
Lu Xuan stared at Ming Huang’s soft, white hand. As if possessed, she reached out, tentatively grasping it at first, then holding it tightly.
Just moments ago, this demon had been ready to destroy heaven and earth, but at the phoenix’s gentle touch, the hostility on her body vanished in an instant. She became as obedient as a kitten.
Cang Lan retracted her black iron spear, tucking it into the bun behind her head, and flew toward the ground. She caught sight of Yu Xuanji digging a hole with a hoe in Ming Huang’s courtyard.
Yu Xuanji had originally intended to bury the plum blossom petals, but as she dug, she hit something hard. The more she dug, the clearer it became.
Cang Lan landed in the courtyard and hugged Yu Xuanji from behind. “Wife, what are you doing? I think I smell wine. It’s so fragrant.”
Yu Xuanji asked without looking back, “The fight is over?”
Cang Lan nodded. “Yes, it’s over. Wife, why don’t you care if I’m hurt, or whether I won or Lu Xuan won?”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “I know you are powerful and couldn’t possibly be hurt. I also knew that you would stop eventually. Am I right?”
Cang Lan said in shock, “Wife, you are simply too intelligent to have guessed even that!”
Yu Xuanji chuckled. “Well, I am a seer, after all.”
As she continued digging, half of a jar was revealed. Yu Xuanji saw it was a wine jar and hurriedly tried to cover it back up, but she was caught red-handed by Cang Lan. “What treasure has wife dug up? Why hide it?”
Yu Xuanji gave a dry laugh. “Nothing, just an empty jar. By the way, A-Lan, where are Senior Ming Huang and A-Xuan?”
Curious about what was in the jar, Cang Lan leaned in and caught a faint, fresh scent. She squatted down and began digging with her hands. While digging, she answered, “I don’t know where they went.”
The speed at which Yu Xuanji buried could not match the speed at which Cang Lan dug. Before long, the wine jar was unearthed and held in Cang Lan’s arms.
Cang Lan opened the lid, and a rich aroma of wine wafted out. It smelled sweet and fragrant with a hint of tartness. She said indignantly, “Unbelievable, burying wine under this winter jasmine tree again. That Old Phoenix lied to me and said there was no more wine. Truly detestable.”
Yu Xuanji slowly filled the hole under the tree and even fetched more soil from elsewhere to fill the depression, packing it down firmly.
Cang Lan was still gloating over the jar of plum wine, thinking she had finally gotten something good from the Old Phoenix. The next second, a gust of palm wind arrived, and Lu Xuan appeared in the courtyard carrying Ming Huang.
Ming Huang rubbed her forehead helplessly, while Lu Xuan gritted her teeth in rage. “Little thief! Taking without asking is stealing!”
Cang Lan argued back, “This jar of wine was buried by A-Xuan. A-Xuan and I are sworn sisters; her things are mine. Isn’t that right, Old Phoenix?”
A voice came from inside Lu Xuan’s body, sounding like a suppressed roar: “The hell it is! I’m going to kill you!”
Lu Xuan scolded, “Shut up! It’s not your turn to speak, you idiot!”
Cang Lan laughed. “Hear that? A-Xuan said this jar of wine is a gift for me. Then I won’t be polite, haha.”
Yu Xuanji could hardly bear to watch. She tugged at Cang Lan’s sleeve. “A-Lan, put the wine back. If you want to drink, I will brew some for you myself.”
Ming Huang smiled. “In that case, this jar of wine—”
The words cut off abruptly. Lu Xuan pinched Ming Huang’s waist with moderate force and asked resentfully, “Was this wine brewed by Master’s own hands?”
Ming Huang smiled and shook her head. “No, it was A-Xuan—”
Lu Xuan’s expression changed instantly. She tilted her chin coldly toward Cang Lan. “Oh. Since she brewed it, I allow you to take it. Leaving her things here is bad luck and annoying to look at.”
Ming Huang frowned and struggled to get out of her arms, but Lu Xuan held her even tighter. Ming Huang could only scold her softly, “There you go again. These are guests. A-Lan grew up at my knees and is like half a child to me. She’s a bit naughty, that’s all. Do not show hostility in the future.”
Lu Xuan said sullenly, “I know.”
The box of small cookies was still on the table. Cang Lan casually placed the wine next to it. Taking advantage of the moment when no one was looking, she grabbed a
