- Chapter 52.1 - The Evil Dragon Grows Resentful; Even Honey is Not as Sweet as My Lady
An Zhi and Ting Lan lay flat on a tree, watching the scene of these two flirting and acting affectionately under the Bodhi tree. They both rubbed the goosebumps on their arms.
Yu Xuanji slowly curled her lips into a smile. She looked up at the tree and happened to lock eyes with An Zhi and Ting Lan.
That single glance made An Zhi shiver. As she lay on the tree, her foot slipped, and she failed to grab the branch above her head. With a tragic cry, she fell straight down.
Cang Lan was currently holding Yu Xuanji. Seeing An Zhi falling from the sky, she nimbly dodged to the side. An Zhi fell down with a thud, unable to even make a sound.
Ting Lan leaped down lightly from the tree, automatically ignoring the two who were hugging and being lovey-dovey. She grabbed one of An Zhi’s legs and dragged her away, disappearing without a trace in the blink of an eye.
Watching the two flee in panic, Yu Xuanji struggled to get up from Cang Lan’s embrace, but the other held her even tighter: “Is my Lady still afraid of being seen by others?”
Yu Xuanji smiled and said helplessly, “It’s not about being afraid of being seen. If we don’t go back, that pot of porridge simmering in the kitchen will boil dry.”
Not long after she spoke, Yu Xuanji and Cang Lan heard a loud bang coming from the kitchen; it seemed like something had exploded.
When the two reached the cave entrance, they saw a cloud of pungent black smoke billowing out. Huang Liu was covered in black soot from head to toe, and her fluffy golden tail had been burned bald. Holding her face with both hands, she ran out of the cave, crying hysterically.
Cang Lan conjured a stream of clear water to douse her, then stuck out a leg to stop Huang Liu, asking, “What happened?”
Huang Liu sobbed, “Great King, I just went into the kitchen to prepare some chicken soup, but the pot of porridge you made exploded! The whole kitchen almost caught fire. I just finished putting out the fire and coming out; I nearly turned into a dried weasel. Great King, look at my fluffy, beautiful tail—it’s all burned bald, wahhhh—”
Yu Xuanji took out a handkerchief to wipe away Huang Liu’s tears and cleaned the dusty grime off her face. She rubbed Huang Liu’s furry little head and said gently, “It’s been hard on you. It’s good that you weren’t badly burned; the fur on your tail will grow back quickly.”
After the fire was extinguished, Cang Lan looked at the pot of porridge she had worked so hard to brew. It had been burned into pitch-black charcoal. Standing before the black pot, she couldn’t help but feel secretly dejected.
At this moment, Yu Xuanji’s inner thoughts were quite the opposite of Cang Lan’s. Looking at the black charcoal inside, she thought to herself that finally, she wouldn’t have to eat it anymore. However, on the surface, she put on an expression of comforting Cang Lan.
Yu Xuanji wrapped one arm around Cang Lan’s waist and said softly, “In the future, when you cook, you must keep an eye on the fire, otherwise it’s easy for things to explode and catch fire. Just remember for next time; treat this as a lesson learned. Let’s see if there’s anything left that wasn’t destroyed.”
Cang Lan silently took Yu Xuanji’s words to heart and used water to wash the entire soot-blackened kitchen clean.
Yu Xuanji gathered the surviving dishes and set them aside. After wiping them clean and putting them in the cupboard, she turned around to see that Cang Lan had turned completely black. Her face was as messy as a calico cat’s, covered in soot.
Cang Lan was completely unaware. Instead, she picked up a rag and carefully wiped the stove, releasing water to wash it as she wiped. When she finished, she rubbed her waist, wiping the black soot from her hands onto her clothes.
“…”
Yu Xuanji thought to herself that it was fortunate Cang Lan had the ability to automatically clean her clothes. Otherwise, if she got like this every day, how long would it take to wash so many dirty clothes?
Huang Liu had already taken a cold bath in the Dragon Pool outside. After washing off the filth, she emerged just in time to run into the Gray Wolf Demon and the Iron-Eating Beast (Panda) who had come to help.
Seeing her disheveled state, the two great demons couldn’t help but burst out laughing: “Did you crawl under someone’s cooking pot? How did you get burned like this? Hahahaha—”
The Gray Wolf Demon said, “Fortunately, you are a great demon with a thousand years of cultivation, otherwise you would have become a charcoal-roasted dried weasel! Hahahaha—”
Huang Liu climbed out of the cold water crossly, leaving wet footprints with every step. She stood before the two mocking demons with her hands on her hips and said, “It’s easy for you to talk. I became like this to put out a fire.”
Touching her bald, furless, thin tail, Huang Liu felt more and more like a hairless rat spirit. She said pitifully, “It’s all because of whatever breakfast the Great King was making. Before I even entered the kitchen, I smelled something burning. When I walked in, that fire… the whole kitchen was shrouded in smoke. Luckily, I acted bravely, which is how I saved the Great King’s kitchen.”
Having said that, Huang Liu puffed out her chest proudly and said, “Just now, the Madam even rubbed my head and praised me for my hard work.”
Hearing this, the two great demons began to feel jealous again. Gritting their teeth, they said, “The Great King is truly lucky. Every day she can get close to the Madam, and even get touched by the Madam. We are so envious we can’t stand it. But the Great King won’t let us touch; one glare from her is enough to scare a demon to death.”
As they spoke, a cold voice came from behind them: “What are you talking about?”
The Gray Wolf Demon and the Iron-Eating Beast slowly turned their heads, their legs trembling as they stammered, “No… nothing.”
Cang Lan stood behind them expressionless, with some soot still on her face. She didn’t look like the Great King of the Wilderness, but rather like a charcoal seller.
The Gray Wolf Demon was originally afraid, but seeing Cang Lan’s “kiln-burned” appearance, she couldn’t help but suppress her rising lips and nodded, saying, “Yes! Great King!”
The Iron-Eating Beast was naturally slower in its movements, so it reverted to its original form, turning into a chubby, round, and cute giant panda. Holding a rag in its two paws, it prepared to go into the kitchen to help Yu Xuanji with the work.
Immediately, the scruff of its neck was grabbed by Cang Lan. It turned its head only to hear Cang Lan say, “Change back for this King.”
The Iron-Eating Beast asked slowly, “Great King, why?”
Cang Lan bit her teeth, thinking to herself: Do I really have to say it’s because you look cute and Yu Xuanji likes you? So, she said expressionlessly, “You look too stupid. My Lady will be scared when she sees you. Stop talking nonsense and change back quickly.”
The Iron-Eating Beast gave an “aow,” but as it was about to change back, Yu Xuanji walked out with a rag in her hand and saw this scene. Her eyes immediately lit up.
Cang Lan thought to herself: Great, my Lady saw it again.
Sure enough, Yu Xuanji handed the rag to the Gray Wolf Demon and walked toward the Iron-Eating Beast with light steps. she reached out to touch its soft, large paws and said, “You’ve changed back again.”
Cang Lan stepped in front of Yu Xuanji and made up a lie on the spot: “Oh, Lady, it has bugs on its body. It’s a contagious disease. I’m planning to give it medical leave so it can go to the divine doctor on the neighboring mountain to get treated.”
Yu Xuanji smiled and said, “It has bugs? It doesn’t look like it. It looks round, white, and plump—not like it’s suffering from malnutrition due to bugs. Could it be a misdiagnosis?”
Cang Lan pushed the Iron-Eating Beast aside gloomily, took Yu Xuanji’s hand, and led her back to the bedroom. She grumbled, “My Lady just likes furry things. It’s so ugly and fat, and it has two dark circles around its eyes. It clearly has a bad sleep schedule and isn’t a good influence. Don’t let it lead you astray.”
The Iron-Eating Beast watched pitifully as Yu Xuanji was led away. It curled into a ball on the ground and rubbed its eyes sadly: “The Great King said I am ugly and fat. Am I really that ugly?”
The Gray Wolf Demon, seeing that Yu Xuanji had touched its paw just now, said very jealously, “You are indeed ugly. Look at you with your bucket waist, lotus-root legs, dark circles, and tiny eyes. You aren’t slender at all.”
The Iron-Eating Beast reached into its chest pouch, took out a small copper mirror to look at its face, and said, “But An Zhi said I am very cute. Those humans outside all like me very much. They even say I am some kind of precious protected animal, and anyone who bullies me will get shot.”
Huang Liu came up with a bad idea: “Then let them take you out. When you become successful and famous out there, don’t you dare forget us, your sisters who shared hardships with you.”
Inside the bedroom, Yu Xuanji was dropped onto the bed by Cang Lan. She propped up her upper body with her arms. Seeing Cang Lan about to press down on her, she reached out to block her: “No! You are too dirty! You are not allowed on the bed!”
Cang Lan looked at her black clothes and said in confusion, “Where is it dirty? It’s clearly very clean.”
Yu Xuanji looked at Cang Lan’s soot-stained face and her hands covered in black ash, frowning: “Look at your hands and face. They are filthy. If you get it on the bed, how will we sleep tonight?”
Cang Lan stared at her hands for a moment, then suddenly put on a tearful expression, saying, “So my Lady thinks I am dirty. My Lady never disliked me before. I suppose after being together for a long time, my Lady has grown tired of me, is that it?”
Yu Xuanji asked in confusion, “Why would you say that?”
Cang Lan bit her lower lip and said, “Just now, your eyes lit up when you looked at the Iron-Eating Beast. In all the days I’ve been with you, I’ve never seen you make such an expression for me. Tell me, have you had a change of heart? Have you fallen in love with that big fat thing!”
Yu Xuanji listened to Cang Lan’s inexplicable accusations and couldn’t help but laugh: “A-Lan, I haven’t. I’ve just never touched a giant panda before. In the world outside, they are rare animals that many people wish they could touch but never get to.”
Hearing this, Cang Lan said aggrievedly, “What about me? There isn’t just one Iron-Eating Beast in the Wilderness, so how can it be called a rare animal? Besides, I am a dragon! The only dragon in the heavens or on earth! Am I not a rare animal?”
Yu Xuanji was stunned for a moment. After thinking for a while, she said, “Hmm—you aren’t just a rare animal; you are a legendary divine beast. They love you even more than they love giant pandas. Even the number of children born in the Year of the Dragon is higher than usual. You are the most important totem in their hearts.”
As Cang Lan listened, she realized Yu Xuanji seemed to be praising her. She blinked, and her voice involuntarily softened. She squatted in front of Yu Xuanji, deliberately revealing the two smooth, rounded dragon horns at her temples: “Lady, is what you say true?”
Yu Xuanji’s palm indeed stroked upward, rubbing Cang Lan’s two small horns with great affection. She smiled and said, “It’s true. I never lie to you. If you were really to appear before the masses, the myths passed down for thousands of years would become reality.”
Cang Lan said proudly, “But I am real. Have those people outside never seen what a dragon looks like?”
Yu Xuanji laughed and said, “Correct. Their knowledge of dragons comes entirely from records passed down from ancient times, which were then continuously evolved until the true image of a dragon was determined—which is exactly how you look now.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Cang Lan transformed into a small dragon about the thickness of an arm. She wound herself around Yu Xuanji’s arm, wagging her tail and shaking her head at her, saying, “Lady, tell me, am I exactly the same as what they say?”
Yu Xuanji’s fingers stroked the soft, smooth scales of the little black dragon, her smile widening: “Exactly. You are exactly the same. Though, I think the real you is even more beautiful than those dragons in the paintings.”
Cang Lan was so happy that she couldn’t help but tighten her body, squeezing Yu Xuanji’s arm.
Hearing Yu Xuanji say it tickled, she became even smaller, coiling around Yu Xuanji’s wrist and transforming into a shiny black “dragon bracelet.”
Yu Xuanji held her right hand before her eyes. Looking at this quiet little dragon, she slowly lowered her head and kissed the “dragon bracelet,” saying, “So good.”
