- Chapter 47.2 - Floating Fragrance, A Wet Kiss Underwater
Yu Linlang’s eyes turned bloodshot as she let out a cold laugh. “Oh? Back then, it was you two who forced her into the bridal sedan! You knew she wouldn’t live long anyway, so you just had her take my place to go to her death. How is it suddenly my fault now?”
Father Yu stood up and slapped Yu Linlang across the face, pointing at her in a rage. “Shut up!”
Yu Linlang’s eyes went red, and she held her swollen left cheek in disbelief. “Father, you hit me?”
Mother Yu quickly stepped in to restrain Father Yu. “What are you doing? Linlang only said a few harsh words; how could you strike her so hard in front of the child?”
Disappointed, Father Yu let out a sigh and sat back down. “Retribution! All of this is retribution! It’s the retribution for your mother and me, and for you as well! Think about what you did to Xuanji. Your mother and I weren’t unaware of every single thing you did; we just didn’t want to lose another daughter.”
Yu Linlang laughed. “Then you two were also accomplices. Heaven destroys those who don’t look out for themselves. I just didn’t want to die; what did I do wrong? She was a sickly thing who was going to die anyway. Ten years of medicine did nothing for her; it was only right that she died in my place.”
As the argument escalated, Yu Xuanji lowered her gaze. Holding Cang Lan’s hand, she slowly turned away and murmured, “A-Lan, let’s go.”
The quarrel in the hall continued incessantly. The girl called XiuXiu hopped down from Yu Linlang’s lap and walked into the courtyard on her own, looking up at the high walls surrounding her. Yu Xuanji stood to the side, watching her with a faint expression, feeling Cang Lan grip her palm and interlace their fingers.
Xiu Xiu knelt on the ground and began digging in the sand with her hands. Afterward, she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, getting her face dirty. Yu Xuanji wanted to take out a handkerchief to clean her up, but looking up, she saw a bewitchingly beautiful woman in white sitting on the wall. The woman dropped a small red fruit onto Xiu Xiu’s head.
Cang Lan looked up and saw it was Tushan Bai. She called out, “Tushan, stop bullying the child.”
Taking advantage of the distraction, Tushan Bai flipped over the wall into the courtyard. She crouched beside XiuXiu and asked with a smile, “Little one, what are you doing?”
XiuXiu looked up and answered innocently, “I’m helping the ants move. There’s a big stone blocking them, so I’m moving it so they won’t be so tired.”
Seeing that Tushan Bai had no intention of harming the girl, Cang Lan breathed a sigh of relief and explained to Yu Xuanji, “Wife, this is the nine-tailed fox immortal from Qingqiu, Tushan Bai. She isn’t a bad person.”
Yu Xuanji nodded. “That’s good then.”
Cang Lan supported the hollow-eyed and stiffly walking Yu Xuanji out of the Yu Manor. Once outside the gates, Cang Lan removed the invisibility spell. She held Yu Xuanji, and they vanished without a trace in an instant.
Tushan Bai thought watching the child help ants move was quite interesting. She crouched beside her and couldn’t help but ask, “What’s so fun about ants moving? How about I take you flying in the sky?”
XiuXiu stared at the beautiful sister with wide-eyed wonder. “Can you really take me flying in the sky?”
Tushan Bai laughed. “Of course! I’m an immortal from the heavens, very powerful.”
Xiu Xiu’s eyes lit up. She stood up and brushed the dust off her clothes, ready to agree. But when she looked back at the hall where the arguing was still going on, her gaze dropped sadly. She shook her head and said, “I can’t go with you. My mother will worry about me.”
Cang Lan held Yu Xuanji and arrived at the banks of Qingyang Lake. More than a decade had passed, and the scenery remained as beautiful as ever. The altar built for the Dragon God was still there, though it was weathered and slightly dilapidated.
Yu Xuanji sat by the lake, staring blankly at the clear water. Cang Lan sat beside her, draping an arm over her shoulder and pulling Yu Xuanji’s head gently onto her own. Cang Lan’s voice was as light and clear as a breeze. “Let the past remain in the past.”
To Yu Linlang, over ten years had passed, but to Yu Xuanji, it felt like a brief, blurry dream. How could such pain be easily smoothed over by a short amount of time?
The two sat shoulder to shoulder. Eventually, Yu Xuanji turned to look at Cang Lan and asked softly, “A-Lan, is there any way you can help XiuXiu?”
Cang Lan was silent for a moment before saying, “There is.”
Saying this, Cang Lan stroked Yu Xuanji’s cheek and gently touched the corner of her eye with her lips. “Don’t worry. With me here, even if I loathe her mother, I will do my best to protect that innocent child.”
Yu Xuanji lowered her eyes, only to hear Cang Lan say, “Xuanji, you’ve suffered these years.”
Yu Xuanji shook her head, then nodded. She bit her lower lip and leaned into Cang Lan’s embrace, sobbing, “It’s all in the past. They say one must taste the bitter before the sweet. If it weren’t for all that, I wouldn’t have met you.”
Cang Lan smiled. “Good. Bitter first, then sweet. No matter how hard or unhappy it was before, it’s all over now.”
The water of Qingyang Lake was clear and bright. Cang Lan took off her shoes and socks, then leaned over to remove Yu Xuanji’s as well. She stepped into the cool lake water, pulling Yu Xuanji’s feet in with her. “Wife, soaking one’s feet in this water is very comfortable.”
Yu Xuanji took a breath and, after adjusting to the cold water, laughingly tried to step on Cang Lan with her other foot, but Cang Lan dodged. In the playful back-and-forth, Yu Xuanji lost her balance and fell into the water. Seeing this, Cang Lan lunged in after her, grabbing her waist and swimming toward the surface.
There were undercurrents in the water. Yu Xuanji had been caught off guard by the fall; before she could reach the surface, she reached her limit, and tiny bubbles began to escape from her nose and mouth.
Seeing this, Cang Lan gripped the back of Yu Xuanji’s neck and tilted her head to breathe air into her mouth, swimming upward while continuing to share her breath. Their fine hair drifted and tangled like clumps of dark, soft seaweed in the lake.
Cang Lan stared into Yu Xuanji’s open eyes and smiled with her own eyes. However, in the next second, Yu Xuanji took the initiative, wrapping her arms around Cang Lan’s waist and deepening the kiss underwater.
Her eyes slowly drifted shut. Cang Lan kissed Yu Xuanji passionately in the water until something wrapped around her ankle and yanked her violently toward the bottom.
Cang Lan snapped her eyes open. She wasn’t at the bottom of a lake or at the Yu Manor, but in the side room of Tushan Bai’s fox den.
An itch came from her ankle. Cang Lan’s eyes widened as she looked down; a thorny vine had wrapped around her ankle, and the thorns were trying to pierce her skin.
Cang Lan was a divine dragon; an attack of this level wouldn’t even cause a scratch. She was about to crush the vine into dust when a hand grabbed her wrist. Yu Xuanji was lying beside her, already awake. She had silently reached out to stop Cang Lan from destroying the vine, slowly shaking her head at her.
Cang Lan had been startled awake. Most of the dream had faded as soon as she woke up, but as soon as she met Yu Xuanji’s gaze, those fragmented memories resurfaced. She clearly remembered dreaming of kissing Yu Xuanji, and it seemed to be underwater. Was her mating season approaching again? Was that why she was dreaming of doing this and that with Yu Xuanji?
Seeing Cang Lan looking distracted, Yu Xuanji pointed toward the door and made a gesture, signaling toward the bright red roses blooming on the window. Cang Lan understood and used a “cicada shedding its skin” trick. She plucked a scale and tossed it into the air, transforming it into a dragon that slipped out through the crack in the door.
Yu Xuanji looked at her left arm with immense pity, her eyes filled with heartache. Cang Lan wasn’t actually in pain, but she suddenly put on a pained expression, wrapping her arms around Yu Xuanji’s waist and burying her face in her chest, let out whimpering sounds of spoiled affection.
Yu Xuanji had been through these many times. Every time, she treated it as if Cang Lan really were in pain and needed her comfort; otherwise, she would have been tempted to pinch the wicked dragon’s face.
The black dragon that went to investigate slipped back in through the crack. Cang Lan took back the scale and tapped it gently. A beam of light projected, recording everything that had just happened outside.
Yu Xuanji watched Cang Lan’s actions in amazement, thinking she hadn’t expected the Great Barren to have such high technology—it was basically a free projector.
The courtyard outside was completely covered in thorny vines. In the dark of night, these vines swayed like long, slender ghost hands. They were covered in blooming roses as red as blood, bewitching and grotesque.
After watching the recording, Cang Lan tucked the scale away and turned to plant a kiss on Yu Xuanji’s cheek. Yu Xuanji frowned, thinking that she still had the heart for such things at a time like this. She struggled to get up, but Cang Lan pressed her back down.
In their scuffle, even the vine on her ankle sensed something was wrong and stopped its attack. Yu Xuanji, fearing the vine might hurt Cang Lan, gathered her strength in her palm, intending to shatter it with one strike.
But Cang Lan wasn’t in pain; she felt as if the thorns on her ankle were just tickling her, which was actually quite pleasant. She narrowed her eyes and tried moving her ankle experimentally. The vine instantly froze, and even the thorns on it turned soft.
Yu Xuanji pressed her lips against Cang Lan’s ear and whispered, “Do not alert the enemy.”
Cang Lan nodded and raised three fingers to swear she wouldn’t, then turned and kissed Yu Xuanji on the lips. She licked her lips as if wanting more, a sweet fragrance still lingering there.
Yu Xuanji frowned. “Go out and see.”
Cang Lan replied with a beaming smile, “I’ll go after we finish kissing.”
