- Chapter 42.2 - Shaking to Pieces; The Proactive Wife is the Most Adorable
While walking through Tushan Bai’s vegetable garden, Yu Xuanji had found many bright red peppers. After tasting one, she confirmed they were the right flavor and decided to make crawfish for Cang Lan. She hadn’t had them in a long time and missed the taste.
Tushan Bai hid inside, and the little skeleton stayed by her side, occasionally patting her back as a form of silent comfort.
The painting Yu Xuanji had made yesterday was dry, but they had to wait seven days until the proper “Yin” hour to reshape the body.
Thinking of the arrow warning from breakfast, Tushan Bai knew she had offended someone dangerous. She began rolling up her paintings and packing her belongings to flee with the little skeleton.
Meanwhile, Yu Xuanji was unhurriedly taking off her shoes by the bank. She sat on a large blue stone while Cang Lan knelt at her feet, helping her remove her shoes while grumbling. “I told you the water is dangerous. I’ll go down myself. You just give orders from the bank. Your health isn’t great; what if you fall in?”
Yu Xuanji patted the top of Cang Lan’s head. “It’s just a small stream that won’t even cover my calves. Nothing will happen.”
Cang Lan continued, “There are stones in the water. What if you step on slippery moss? What if you slip and fall? What if you hit your head on a rock?”
Yu Xuanji was speechless. As she tried to stand up, Cang Lan pressed her back down. “Wife, let me do this hard labor. Wouldn’t it be more comfortable for you to sit on the bank and read?”
In the end, Yu Xuanji couldn’t win against Cang Lan. She sat on the rock, idly poking at the water grass with her fish spear.
Cang Lan didn’t need a spear; her dragon claws were the best tools for catching fish. However, remembering the time she choked on a fish bone, Cang Lan ignored the carp swimming by her feet and turned over river stones instead.
Yu Xuanji said there would be crawfish and small crabs under the stones and told her to be careful of the claws.
Cang Lan had lived in cold ponds for years and had seen many shrimp and crabs. She just didn’t like eating them—too much shell, crunchy but no meat, and they got stuck in her teeth. But since Yu Xuanji said they would be delicious, Cang Lan began to look forward to them. She hadn’t seen “spicy crawfish” before and was already salivating.
Cang Lan flipped a large rock to find a large, pitch-black crawfish. Having its territory disturbed, it raised its claws and charged at Cang Lan.
Cang Lan snorted, “Foolish,” and tossed it into the bucket. The spot where she was pinched didn’t even hurt.
By the time she caught the second and third, she was doing well. Seeing her get the hang of it, Yu Xuanji picked some tough reeds and sat on the bank to weave small trinkets.
Watching Cang Lan work, Yu Xuanji imagined the shape of a black dragon. She pressed the reeds and began weaving from the head.
After some time, Yu Xuanji looked at the nearly finished grass dragon. She was about to add a tail when she heard a cry from Cang Lan in the stream.
Yu Xuanji stood up quickly, but the sudden movement caused her lower back to ache. She had to support herself as she walked toward Cang Lan.
Cang Lan was clutching her finger, looking like she was about to cry. She ran to Yu Xuanji. “Wife! That stinky shrimp bit my hand! It hurts so much, kiss it better for me.”
Those words sounded oddly familiar.
Yu Xuanji smiled, hid the grass dragon behind her back, took Cang Lan’s finger, and blew on it gently. She looked up to see Cang Lan staring at her expectantly. “Wife isn’t going to kiss it?”
“…”
Yu Xuanji looked at the full bucket of crawfish and then at Cang Lan’s dirty finger. She leaned in and kissed her on the lips. “There, doesn’t it feel better now?”
Cang Lan grinned. “It doesn’t hurt anymore. My wife is a miracle doctor.”
Yu Xuanji sighed helplessly. A few days ago, this dragon was boasting about being “copper-headed and iron-boned,” yet now she was acting “frail.” It was obviously intentional, but Yu Xuanji played along.
Cang Lan caught crawfish for two hours. As the sun began to set, Yu Xuanji finished a second grass figure—a small grass person. The grass person and the grass dragon held hands. She held them contentedly and called out, “A-Lan, it’s time to go home.”
Cang Lan leaped onto the bank and gave Yu Xuanji a long kiss. She proudly lifted the heavy bucket. “Wife, look! I caught a whole bucket. Is it enough?”
Yu Xuanji’s eyes lit up. She patted Cang Lan’s head. “You caught so many! Our A-Lan is so impressive.”
Cang Lan nuzzled against Yu Xuanji’s palm for a while, then spotted the trinkets. “Wife, what are those?”
Yu Xuanji held up the grass dragon. “This dragon is you, and this person is me.”
Cang Lan asked, “Why isn’t there a baby?”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “We don’t have a baby yet. Does A-Lan want one?”
Cang Lan’s face turned bright red. Her golden eyes darted around as she turned away shyly. “Wife, I’m not prepared to lay an egg yet…”
Yu Xuanji’s smile deepened. “Alright then, we’ll wait until the time is right.”
Cang Lan stared at her. “When is it right?”
Yu Xuanji laughed. “There’s no time like the present. How about today?”
Cang Lan froze, stuttering, “To… today?”
Yu Xuanji patted her head again. “Just kidding. I’m teasing you.”
Cang Lan’s excitement vanished, replaced by a dejected “Oh.”
Yu Xuanji touched her abdomen and said, “Having a baby depends on fate. It might come when you least expect it. No need to rush; we’ll prepare first.”
The Siege of the Fox Hole
When they returned with the bucket and spear, they found a crowd of demon beasts surrounding the fox hole. It was packed from front to back.
Cang Lan and Yu Xuanji looked at each other, standing behind the crowd and peeking in. Could these demons be Tushan Bai’s fans coming for books?
But Yu Xuanji felt something was wrong. These demons were carrying steel forks, machetes, maces, and wolf-tooth clubs. They looked fierce. You don’t need weapons to ask for a book. Yu Xuanji suspected they were there to cause trouble for Tushan Bai.
Cang Lan held Yu Xuanji’s hand as they pushed through. Her fish spear accidentally poked a tiger demon in the rear. The demon yelled and hit the one next to it. “Why did you poke me?”
The confused Golden Toad demon replied, “I didn’t! Don’t slander me!”
The tiger demon was short-tempered and immediately started a fight, causing chaos among the onlookers.
At the front stood the Qingbird, holding a book—the draft Tushan Bai had given her yesterday. She led the demons, waving her weapon and shouting, “You dead fox! How dare you write off our goddess Yu Yaoguang! We are here for an explanation!”
Cang Lan flashed into the fox hole with Yu Xuanji. Yu Xuanji asked, “What did that bird just say?”
“I don’t know.” Cang Lan waved her hand, setting up a barrier. “What’s wrong with these demons? They are all thousand-year-old demons, and that bird is usually so composed. Why is she leading a mob?”
Yu Xuanji shook her head. “Let’s ask Tu Shan.”
Inside, they found Tushan Bai carrying bags and bundles, hurriedly packing her belongings. She was holding the little skeleton, preparing to escape through a back tunnel.
Cang Lan grabbed her collar. “Why are you running?”
Tushan Bai explained frantically, “I just wrote off a supporting character, and this mob showed up! It’s just one character! They even said they’d send blades to assassinate me. I wrote for them for nothing; they’re all ungrateful.”
Yu Xuanji looked at the angry crowd and then at the panicked fox. “Who did you kill off?”
Tushan Bai said casually, “Yu Yaoguang.”
Yu Xuanji’s smile faded. She fell silent for a moment and then told Cang Lan, “A-Lan, catch her. Don’t let her run.”
Tushan Bai: “…”
In an instant, Tushan Bai transformed into a single-tailed fox to escape through a small hole, but Cang Lan easily grabbed her by the scruff of her neck.
Tushan Bai, now in human form, sat on the floor, defeated.
Yu Xuanji walked toward her with a “kind” smile. “Tushan Bai, who did you say you killed off?”
Tushan Bai trembled. “Yu… Yu Yaoguang. Is there a problem?”
Cang Lan didn’t know who Yu Yaoguang was, but she followed Yu Xuanji’s lead.
Yu Xuanji smiled. “Very well. A-Lan, take her to the study.”
Tushan Bai was forced into the chair at her desk, with the little skeleton tossed beside her.
Yu Xuanji flipped through the latest chapter and smiled thinly. “You killed her. Why?”
Tushan Bai stammered, “I… I couldn’t think of what to write next, so I thought I’d let her go offline first and introduce new characters…”
Yu Xuanji’s smile disappeared. “Oh, so you’re a writer who leaves stories unfinished. Say no more. Bury her.”
The Qingbird pointed at Tushan Bai’s nose. “You! No wonder you were acting suspicious yesterday. You killed Yu Yaoguang! I hate you!”
The other demons, afraid of Cang Lan, stayed at the door.
Yu Xuanji smiled at them. “Don’t be afraid. Come in. I’m on your side.”
At those words, the demons swarmed in, shouting accusations. “You stinky fox! Why did you kill our goddess?”
The tiger demon who got poked: “I can’t take it anymore! I’ll fight you!”
The toad demon: “Revive our goddess immediately, or I’ll skin you!”
Tushan Bai was held at weapon-point as she frantically rewrote the ending for Yu Yaoguang. The little skeleton was grinding ink so fast that sparks almost flew.
Tushan Bai kept shooting pleading looks at Yu Xuanji, but Yu Xuanji just picked up the bucket of crawfish and walked away. “A-Lan, let’s go wash the crawfish.”
As they left, the Qingbird blocked Tushan Bai’s view. “Keep writing! We want to go home for dinner too!”
In the Kitchen
Cang Lan closed the kitchen door and set the bucket down, pulling Yu Xuanji into a hug.
Finally, it was quiet. Yu Xuanji looked for tools and went to reach for a brush on the wall, but Cang Lan hugged her from behind.
In an instant, Yu Xuanji was lifted and placed on a small stool by the stove. Cang Lan said, “Wife, you sit. You worked hard last night; you must be exhausted. Let me do these small tasks.”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “It’s just washing crawfish. Let me move around a bit. Sitting like this is uncomfortable; my back is a little sore.”
Cang Lan tilted her head and teased, “Wife says that now, but last night, who was it that held my neck and insisted on ‘moving herself’? And then after a few times, you said you couldn’t do it anymore and wanted to lie down and told me not to stop. I’m doing this so you can save your strength for the bed, so you won’t say I’m ‘bullying’ you day and night.”
Yu Xuanji poked Cang Lan’s nose and took the brush to start cleaning the crawfish, turning her back to her.
Cang Lan realized Yu Xuanji might be slightly annoyed and leaned in playfully. “Wife, I know I was wrong. I won’t do it again. Please forgive me—”
Listening to Cang Lan’s sweet, soft voice and her exaggeratedly cute tone, Yu Xuanji felt a bit of a chill, yet she found the “bad dragon” incredibly adorable. Is it because I love her too much?
Cang Lan blinked her bright golden eyes and rested her head on Yu Xuanji’s lap, looking up expectantly.
Yu Xuanji looked at her, poked her nose again, and laughed helplessly. “You… what am I supposed to do with you?”
Cang Lan took the brush. “Leave these small things to me. You just sit and watch.”
Then, Cang Lan leaned into her ear and whispered conspiratorially, “But Wife, you can’t be like this in bed. You should be more proactive. Actually, I like it better when you take the lead.”
Yu Xuanji closed her eyes, her ears turning red beneath her hair. She tried to hide them, but Cang Lan caught her.
The bad dragon laughed. “Wow, Wife’s ears are so red. I really want to taste them; I bet they’re sweet.”
Yu Xuanji finally admitted it: she had lost completely.
Cang Lan was the most adorable, most naturally gifted dragon in the world. Whether then or now, she was no match for her.
Without a doubt.
