- Chapter 42.1 - Shaking to Pieces; The Proactive Wife is the Most Adorable
Tushan Bai was in the master bedroom writing a storybook. Ever since she started writing out of boredom, she had become an overnight sensation among the book-loving demons of the Barren Wastes. She even had a following of obsessed fans who chased after her for updates.
The little skeleton sat beside her, holding the inkstone and ink stick in her hands, diligently grinding ink.
Turning to look at the hardworking little skeleton, Tushan Bai cupped her cheeks and placed a gentle kiss on her smooth, snow-white skull. “Thank you for your hard work, Xiuxiu.”
The little skeleton looked up and smiled at Tushan Bai, but since she had no facial muscles, she couldn’t actually form a smile.
Tushan Bai rubbed her chin, happily writing off a popular “White Moonlight” character in her story. As she wrote, she sighed over the character’s tragic fate while smiling broadly.
Closing the first draft, Tushan Bai went to the window and whistled. A Qingbird, deep azure with mottled feathers, arrived and grabbed the draft with its strong talons.
Perched on the windowsill, the bird pecked at its feathers and said, “Finished so soon? What’s the ending for the second volume of Cang Xuan and Yu Yaoguang? I’m looking forward to them living happily ever after.”
Tushan Bai gave a forced laugh. “Right, right. You go ahead and print it first; I haven’t written the ending just yet.”
Once the bird flew away, Tushan Bai paced the room anxiously. She wanted to call the bird back to change the female lead’s ending, but it was too late. She muttered to herself, “It’s over, it’s over. It’s just killing off one supporting character; surely I won’t get scolded too badly.”
Thinking this, she prepared to lie down and rest to steady her nerves, but her ears caught a sudden, hurried sound.
Tushan Bai held her breath and tilted her head to listen. The sound seemed to be coming from the side room next door.
What was happening? Could the young couple be fighting and throwing things? Tushan Bai felt a sense of dread. If she had known, she would have moved all the teacups, teapots, and vases when she was tidying the room earlier. She hurried to the door, followed by the confused little skeleton.
The little skeleton clutched Tushan Bai’s sleeve, following her to peek.
The windows of the side room were tightly shut. Tushan Bai tried to push them, but they wouldn’t budge. She initially thought an argument was occurring, but as she stood by the door, she heard nothing.
That was until she pressed her ear against the wooden door and heard faint, rhythmic groans. There was a woman’s voice sounding aggrieved, with a hint of coquettishness: “Don’t… don’t do that…”
Tushan Bai’s eyes widened, unable to believe her ears. Soon after, the sounds of grievance were drowned out by the creaking of a shaking bed.
Squeak, creak— It sounded like the legs of the bed were swaying.
Tushan Bai couldn’t help but shout, “You two! Don’t shake my thousand-year-old sandalwood bed to pieces!”
After cursing, Tushan Bai covered the little skeleton’s ears and walked away, grumbling.
The creaking of the elm bed drowned out Tushan Bai’s shouting. Yu Xuanji’s wrists were held above her head, bound by a slender red string that left red marks on her snow-white skin.
Yu Xuanji turned her head toward the window, sensing someone speaking outside, and tried to focus on the sound.
Cang Lan looked up and, seeing her distracted state, bit her directly. “Ah—”
Immediately after, Cang Lan leaned in to kiss Yu Xuanji’s lips. Their lips were red and glistening, covered in crystal-clear moisture.
A tear slid from the corner of Yu Xuanji’s eye, only to be licked away by Cang Lan’s tongue. Tasting the salty, hot tear, she heard Cang Lan’s ethereal voice in her ear: “Let’s see if you dare to do that again.”
The Next Morning
When Yu Xuanji woke up, her arms and legs were aching. Opening her eyes, she was met with Cang Lan’s chin and slender neck, which bore several red marks—likely scratched by her the previous night.
The first thing Yu Xuanji did was reach down to feel the wooden bed beneath her. Finding it intact, she breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s still here. It didn’t collapse.”
Just as the words left her mouth, a loud thud echoed. Both Yu Xuanji and Cang Lan slid toward the left side of the bed, and she landed squarely on top of Cang Lan.
Their chins collided. Cang Lan felt a slight pain and slowly opened her eyes, mumbling hoarsely, “Wife, what happened?”
Lying on top of Cang Lan, Yu Xuanji pointed at the bed and said calmly, “The bed leg broke.”
Cang Lan rubbed her eyes and saw that she had indeed rolled off the bed along with the blankets.
After helping Yu Xuanji dress, Cang Lan carried her to a nearby stool, placing a pillow on it first for fear of it being too hard.
Cang Lan stood before the broken bed, hands on her hips, looking troubled. She turned to Yu Xuanji for help. “Wife, the bed leg is broken. What should we do?”
Yu Xuanji massaged her lower back and said, “I told you to slow down yesterday, but you wouldn’t listen. You said this bed was sturdy. Did you forget about the white jade bed at Dragon Pond the other day?”
Cang Lan lowered her eyes, looking embarrassed. “I just… got excited and forgot. Wife, I know I was wrong. Please don’t bring that up again, I beg you.”
Yu Xuanji smiled, but before she could speak, a knock came from the door.
Tushan Bai had woken up early to prepare a meal. She didn’t actually want to cook for them, but since Yu Xuanji had promised to help her reclaim the assets Cang Lan had seized, she endured it.
The door was shut; it seemed they weren’t up yet. Tushan Bai didn’t want to feed Cang Lan, but she and Yu Xuanji had made peace yesterday.
Since they were friends now, she couldn’t let a friend go hungry. Tushan Bai wasn’t that unkind of a demon.
After some thought, she decided to call them for breakfast to avoid the petty dragon making a scene and turning her house upside down.
Hearing no movement inside, Tushan Bai knocked again. She leaned in and heard Cang Lan whispering, “Wife, how do I put this bed leg back on?”
Tushan Bai’s eyes widened. She kicked the door open and stood there with her hands on her hips. She saw Cang Lan holding a bed leg in one hand while lifting the bed with the other.
“…”
Witnessing this, Tushan Bai pinched her own philtrum hard, gritting her teeth. “Did you not hear what I said yesterday? I told you to be careful not to break my thousand-year-old sandalwood bed!”
Cang Lan looked at Yu Xuanji blankly and asked, “Wife, what is she babbling about? Did you hear?”
Yu Xuanji thought for a moment and said, “I think I heard someone talking, but I didn’t catch it clearly.”
Cang Lan slowly set the bed down and tossed the bed leg toward Tushan Bai. “What thousand-year sandalwood? This broken bed isn’t sturdy at all. My wife and I just fell right off while sleeping. Fortunately, it didn’t hurt her.”
Cang Lan walked over to Yu Xuanji, massaged her a bit, and said, “You scared my wife first thing in the morning. I haven’t even asked for mental compensation yet, and here you are coming to our door.”
In all her thousands of years, Tushan Bai had never met someone so unreasonable. No, she wasn’t a person; she wasn’t even a decent “thing”!
Just as Tushan Bai was about to lose her temper, Yu Xuanji stood up and placed a jade pendant carved with a phoenix pattern into her hand. She smiled and said, “Tu Shan, this is a small token of my appreciation. A-Lan is just looking out for me, which is why she speaks so bluntly.”
Cang Lan stood by with her arms crossed. After Tushan Bai took the jade, she pulled Yu Xuanji back and warned into her ear, “Don’t get so close to her.”
Yu Xuanji had suffered quite a bit the previous night, so she was still feeling wary. She didn’t dare cross Cang Lan’s mind and didn’t even give Tushan Bai a second glance, fearing she might “go crazy” again.
Yes, go crazy.
Tushan Bai opened her palm and looked at the jade, which was brimming with spiritual energy. She exclaimed in surprise, “This is Lingshui Jade! Legend has it that this jade is formed from the tears of a Divine Phoenix. You’re just giving it to me?”
Cang Lan leaned her chin on Yu Xuanji’s shoulder and smiled. “So it’s a precious jade? This King has plenty to choose from. This piece is a reward for you.”
Tushan Bai was green with envy. She held the Lingshui Jade in both hands and blew on it carefully.
Just then, the little skeleton walked over. Tushan Bai took her wrist and patted her head, smiling. “Xiuxiu, you wear this. It has the power of the phoenix. No other demon will dare bully you while you wear it.”
“Bully?” Cang Lan laughed. “She even dares to provoke This King. Who in the Barren Wastes would dare bully her?”
Tushan Bai huffed coldly. “I know my Xiuxiu. She is quiet, gentle, and frail. You, you evil dragon, don’t even think about bullying her.”
Cang Lan and Yu Xuanji exchanged a look. Cang Lan wanted to recount what had actually happened that day, but Yu Xuanji stopped her with a smile.
After putting on the Lingshui Jade, the little skeleton stroked it carefully with her bony hands, afraid of accidentally cracking it.
Then, the little skeleton turned to Cang Lan, pointed at the red marks on her neck, then touched her own neck, and shook Tushan Bai’s wrist.
Tushan Bai followed her gaze and blushed instantly. She pulled the skeleton away. “Ignore them. Morals are declining. Don’t play with them in the future; you’ll be badly influenced.”
Cang Lan touched her neck, looked in a mirror, and smirked. “Hmph, she’s just jealous that I have a wife.”
Yu Xuanji smiled helplessly. “A-Lan, that little skeleton is called Xiuxiu, and she is also Tushan Bai’s wife.”
Cang Lan said nonchalantly, “Hmph, but I can kiss my wife and do all sorts of shameful things. Can she and her wife do that?”
Yu Xuanji covered her forehead. “So you know they are ‘shameful’ things. You can’t be so reckless in the future, especially in someone else’s house. You must remember this so we aren’t laughed at.”
As they were eating breakfast, a “cloud-piercing arrow” flew in, aiming straight for the center of the dining table. Cang Lan caught it with quick reflexes.
The feather dart was transparent, made of spiritual energy. In Cang Lan’s hand, it turned into crystal smoke and vanished instantly.
Cang Lan protectively pulled Yu Xuanji into her arms. “Wife, someone is trying to assassinate us.”
Tushan Bai prepared to protect the little skeleton, but the skeleton hugged her waist instead, standing in front of her with a fierce look.
Suddenly, a note appeared on the table. Yu Xuanji noticed it first and opened it. Large characters were written on it: “Tushan Bai, give up your life!”
Yu Xuanji looked at Tushan Bai and placed the note before her. “Tu Shan, have you provoked some enemy?”
Tushan Bai stared at Cang Lan and said, “Enemy? The biggest enemy I have in the Barren Wastes is standing right behind you.”
Yu Xuanji and Cang Lan looked at each other. Yu Xuanji curved her lips. “Who else besides her?”
Tushan Bai shook her head, unable to think of anyone else. “I don’t know. Ever since my storybooks went on the market, almost every bird and beast has become a fan. Many storytellers take turns narrating my tales. Could it be a competitor?”
Yu Xuanji mused, “It’s possible. Don’t go out for a while, lest you be targeted.”
Cang Lan tilted her chin up and burned the note to ash. “With This King here, what minor demon would dare show itself? They must want their bones crushed to dust.”
Yu Xuanji held Cang Lan’s hand and said to Tushan Bai, “Tu Shan, don’t worry. With A-Lan here, nothing will happen.”
Catching Crawfish
After breakfast, Yu Xuanji wanted to go for a stroll. Although Tushan Bai’s place wasn’t as grand as the Denglin Fairyland, it was quite pleasant. A stream flowed outside with small fish and shrimp.
Yu Xuanji carried a wooden bucket, smiling as she prepared to go out. She had already rolled up her pant legs when Cang Lan blocked the door. “Wife, it’s dangerous outside. Where are you going?”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “I’m going to catch some small shrimp. How about I make spicy crawfish for you at lunch?”
Cang Lan had never heard of the dish. Though she wanted to eat it, she resisted the temptation. “No. Tushan Bai is being targeted for assassination. It’s dangerous; I won’t let you out.”
Yu Xuanji said, “They are targeting Tushan Bai, not us. Besides, you are the most powerful dragon in the world. Wherever you are is the safest place. Since you’re afraid something will happen to me, why don’t you come and catch shrimp with me?”
With just a few words, Cang Lan was charmed. She took the bucket and fish spear, held Yu Xuanji’s hand, and smiled. “My wife is right. With me here, what is there to fear? Whoever bullies my wife is crossing Cang Lan.”
