- Chapter 41.1 - Feeding the Dragon with One's Body — Craving a Snack, Eating the Wife
Cang Lan carried Yu Xuanji through the sky for a long time but could not find a suitable place to land. In her urgency, she spotted a cave on a nearby cliff and spiraled down toward it.
Seeing Cang Lan heading for the cave, Yu Xuanji asked worriedly, “A-Lan, where are you taking me?”
Cang Lan smiled. “Wife, look, there is a cave ahead. Shall we go in and take a look?”
Yu Xuanji fretted, “It’s well and good, but if other demonic beasts live inside, wouldn’t it be inappropriate to barge in like this? What if we provoke them?”
Cang Lan declared, “I am the greatest in this Wilderness. Who would dare provoke me?”
Yu Xuanji smiled helplessly. “The old habit is acting up again. What did I tell you before? You even promised me you took it all to heart.”
Without needing to think, Cang Lan blurted out, “Prioritize harmony, treat other demons with courtesy, and avoid killing. I remember everything my wife said.”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “That’s good. It’s not right to intrude upon someone’s grotto-heaven at will. Let’s just go home. What do you think, A-Lan?”
The Immortal Realm was temporarily inaccessible. Cang Lan felt it was too embarrassing to return; especially after what happened at the Dragon Pond the previous night, she truly didn’t have the face to go back, let alone face Lu Xuan’s stinky expression.
Thinking it over and having nowhere else to go, Cang Lan had a sudden inspiration and said to Yu Xuanji, “Wife, sit tight and hold on. I’m taking you to a good place.”
Yu Xuanji smiled resignedly and gripped Cang Lan’s two dragon horns. “Fine, I’ll see just where you’re taking me.”
Tushan Bai was at her desk writing the latest chapter of her storybook. Crouched at her feet was a small white skeleton, looking up at her expectantly. Where the little skeleton sat, there was a prayer mat. She held her chin with two bony hands, and after a while, she began to nudge against Tushan Bai’s feet.
Tushan Bai put down her brush and looked down at the little skeleton who had been caught red-handed and was pulling her hands back. Grabbing her by the crown of the skull, Tushan Bai said, “You’ve been following me for a while now, and I still don’t know your name.”
The little skeleton pointed to her mouth and shook her head.
Seeing this, Tushan Bai sighed. “I forgot you can’t speak.” She picked up the brush and gestured at the paper. “Can you write? Write it for me. I can’t just call you ‘Hey’ all day.”
The little skeleton jumped onto the table, but Tushan Bai blocked her, pressing her back down. “No. Even if you aren’t human, you shouldn’t lose your manners. Go and pull that chair over and sit on it.”
As soon as she spoke, Tushan Bai’s lap felt heavy. The little skeleton jumped directly onto her lap, straddling her and hugging her waist.
Tushan Bai originally wanted to push her off, but the little skeleton looked up at her with two hollow eye sockets. For some reason, Tushan Bai actually saw a hint of pity in those vast eye holes. She said helplessly, “Fine, fine, I give in. Just sit still and I’ll watch you write.”
With a gentle hug, Tushan Bai picked up the little skeleton and sat her in her lap with her back to her. Although she was in the form of a skeleton, she was very light and could be lifted with one hand.
The little skeleton turned to look at the brush and tried to grasp it with her long finger bones. However, as soon as the brush touched her hand, the smooth, rounded finger bones couldn’t grip the barrel. It slipped several times, and ink splattered onto the paper.
Over the years, Tushan Bai had been exploited by Cang Lan countless times, so she was extremely patient when facing such minor issues. If the brush fell, it could be picked up; if the paper was dirty, it could be turned into something useful—as long as she didn’t run into that evil dragon…
A dragon’s roar came from outside. Tushan Bai pinched her philtrum hard, thinking to herself that she really shouldn’t talk about people behind their backs—whatever you fear most will come to pass.
Oh wait, that evil dragon wasn’t a person; she was a heinous, malicious, and unpardonable scoundrel.
Tushan Bai had intended to guide the skeleton’s hand to write, but since the evil dragon was here, it surely wasn’t for anything good. The smile on her face vanished instantly.
Cang Lan held Yu Xuanji’s hand as they stood in Tushan Bai’s courtyard. She shouted toward the interior, “Tu Shan, this King has arrived. Come out and receive me!”
Yu Xuanji gave Cang Lan’s palm a light pinch and shook her head, signaling her not to speak so rudely.
Cang Lan pouted and changed her tune: “Tu Shan, your dragon is here. Come out and see me.”
Yu Xuanji sighed and rubbed her forehead, wondering where the little dragon learned such phrases—probably from An Zhi and Ting Lan.
Tushan Bai came out slowly, with the little skeleton clutching her sleeve and refusing to let go.
Cang Lan recognized the little skeleton immediately as the one she had subdued before. She asked curiously, “You and this skeleton spirit seem to get along quite well. When I captured her that day, she was extremely fierce; even my subordinates were almost no match for her. She seemed like a tough character.”
As she spoke, the “tough character” shrank back timidly behind Tushan Bai, looking so delicate she seemed as if she would break at a touch.
Seeing the little skeleton so afraid, Tushan Bai put her hands on her hips and blocked her. “What are you saying? Little White is very obedient. She isn’t scary at all. Don’t think you can bully people just because you’re the Dragon King. I, Tushan Bai, am not to be trifled with either.”
Cang Lan was bewildered. “A few days ago, you came to question this King about why I placed this skeleton spirit by your side. I didn’t expect the tables to turn so quickly—now this King is the villain.”
Tushan Bai tapped the back of the little skeleton’s head and said, “Go back inside first. I have something to say to this Dragon King.”
The little skeleton shook her head violently. During the shaking, the smooth, round skull attached to her neck was suddenly flung off.
The three of them had different expressions. Cang Lan quickly stood in front of Yu Xuanji to protect her. When they looked again, they saw the skeleton’s body groping blindly on the ground, unable to find where her head had gone.
Tushan Bai sighed helplessly, walked over to pick up the head, and skillfully reattached it—in fact, she had done these many times. The little skeleton would suddenly fall apart when she was excited or agitated. Sometimes the body couldn’t be put back together, so Tushan Bai had to assemble her bone by bone into a complete skeleton.
Initially, Tushan Bai had attached the thigh bone to the arm and the shoulder blades to the chest, causing the little skeleton to fall apart while walking. Later, having no other choice, Tushan Bai studied a set of bone scriptures and memorized the entire human skeletal structure. Only now was she adept at reassembling her.
Watching the comical sight of the skeleton, Yu Xuanji’s grip on Cang Lan’s hand tightened slightly as her gaze fell upon Tushan Bai. Tushan Bai looked over at that moment, her smile gradually fading as she led the little skeleton away.
Cang Lan called out from behind, “What’s going on? Are you not welcoming this King and my wife?”
Tushan Bai said expressionlessly, “I am not.”
Seeing Cang Lan about to get angry again, Yu Xuanji held her hand firmly and said to Tushan Bai, “Miss Tu Shan, I have a way to make her speak.”
Tushan Bai paused and turned to look at Yu Xuanji, saying with a half-smile, “Isn’t Miss Xuanji a mortal? Why do you know such strange arts?”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “I once studied Daoist methods in the mountains. I can be considered half a mystic.”
Cang Lan asked in surprise, “Wife, you studied Daoist methods? I’ve never heard you mention this.”
Yu Xuanji winked lightly at Cang Lan and whispered in her ear, “I’m lying to her.”
Cang Lan smiled mischievously and said loudly with understanding, “Aow, so my wife is actually a half-immortal.”
Yu Xuanji: “…”
Inside the house, the little skeleton hid behind Tushan Bai. Cang Lan watched as Yu Xuanji sat at the desk and took out a sheet of white paper. Cang Lan eagerly stood by her side to help grind the ink.
As soon as Yu Xuanji picked up the brush, Cang Lan began to diligently massage her back and shoulders, acting as comfortably as if she were in her own home. Tushan Bai, who was originally curious about what she planned to do, now really wanted to kick them out. Her eyes ached from the sight, and she wished she could poke them out.
Yu Xuanji smiled helplessly and said, “A-Lan, stop fussing. Focus on grinding the ink.”
Hearing this, Cang Lan immediately restrained herself and stood obediently to the side. Taking advantage of a moment when Tushan Bai wasn’t looking, she kissed Yu Xuanji’s earlobe and said with a smile, “Wife, see how obedient and capable I am? What reward are you going to give me?”
Tushan Bai’s teeth felt sour from the sweetness; she could hardly stand it. Just as she was about to snap, she heard Yu Xuanji ask, “Miss Tu Shan, what kind of person do you want? For example, features, skin tone, build… tell me, and I will draw her for you.”
While Tushan Bai was thinking, Yu Xuanji hooked her arm around Cang Lan’s neck and gave her a peck on the corner of her mouth, saying softly, “Very good. We’ll talk at home. There are outsiders here.”
Cang Lan felt unsatisfied but turned to Tushan Bai and said, “Hey, think faster. This King’s and my wife’s time is very precious.”
Tushan Bai turned to look at the little skeleton, pinching her bones to gauge her dimensions, and said, “I don’t know what she should look like. Probably a girl of sixteen or seventeen, quite thin and small, with a pale face and a pointed chin, messy black hair, and eyes—”
The words stopped abruptly. Tushan Bai pulled her hand back as if she had touched a hot potato. She choked up and said with a raspy voice, “Probably like that. Just draw whatever.”
The little skeleton’s wrist was suddenly let go. Before she could react to what had happened, Tushan Bai had already slowly turned away, silent.
Yu Xuanji picked up the brush and began to slowly outline a human figure. Cang Lan stood quietly to the side, even her breathing careful, for fear of disturbing Yu Xuanji. For a moment, there was not a single sound in the room.
Cang Lan watched as Yu Xuanji drew a few lines at random, which gradually turned into a face. When it came time to draw the features, Yu Xuanji thought for a moment, then finally put down the brush and held up the paper to show everyone.
Tushan Bai turned around and, seeing the faceless girl in the drawing, was stunned. “Why is there no face?”
Yu Xuanji set the drawing down and said, “You didn’t tell me her appearance just now. I didn’t dare to dot the pupils, because I know she must be someone very important to you.”
Tushan Bai stared into Yu Xuanji’s eyes and curled her lips into a smile. “Yes, she is my late wife. Her face is forever indelible in my heart. Therefore, I cannot conflate her with this skeleton; it wouldn’t be fair to her, nor to this little skeleton.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the little skeleton hiding behind her rushed toward Yu Xuanji, reaching out to grab the drawing in her hand.
Cang Lan blocked Yu Xuanji, easily grabbing the skeleton by the neck and lifting her into the air. Her eyes burned with fury. “What do you think you’re doing?”
