- Chapter 40.3 - The Nuptial Chamber and Candlelight
Cang Lan gave a deep sigh, pulled back the wedding quilt, and then removed the intricate hairpins from Yu Xuanji’s bun one by one.
Her black, lustrous hair fell like a waterfall, covering half of Yu Xuanji’s face. She stole a glance at Cang Lan and found that she was focusing intensely on helping her comb her hair.
Once her hair was combed, Cang Lan embraced Yu Xuanji as they lay down, tucking the quilt around her before putting on her shoes to leave the bridal chamber.
Before she could take a single step, her wrist was gripped tightly. Cang Lan looked back to see Yu Xuanji curled up in the quilt, with only her eyes showing, clutching her wrist and refusing to let go.
Cang Lan laughed and asked, “What is it?”
Yu Xuanji emerged from the quilt and asked cautiously, “Are you not going to sleep with me?”
Cang Lan asked, “Do you want me to sleep with you?”
Yu Xuanji nodded.
Cang Lan curved her lips, pulled back the bright red wedding quilt, and lay down beside her.
Both of them stared straight up at the red bed curtains. Yu Xuanji’s heart pounded like a drum—thump, thump—so loud it was deafening.
Cang Lan blew out the wedding candle, and the room was instantly plunged into a pitch-black darkness where one couldn’t see their own hand. Yu Xuanji was the same.
In the darkness, Cang Lan heard a rustling sound beside her. Then, her chest was pressed against something soft, and something soft and cool touched her neck.
Cang Lan thought it must be her chin.
Warm breath puffed against the skin of her neck. Cang Lan curved her lips and took the initiative to embrace Yu Xuanji’s waist, her palm resting on her back as she slowly and continuously channeled spiritual energy into her.
Nourished by the spiritual energy, Yu Xuanji slowly closed her eyes. Her heart, which had been about to leap into her throat, settled back down, and she soon fell asleep.
The next day, Yu Xuanji was awakened by a pleasant aroma. Her stomach was growling with hunger. She rubbed her belly and slowly sat up in bed, only to find the person beside her was already gone.
Lifting the quilt and getting out of bed, Yu Xuanji looked at the elegantly laid out courtyard and curved her lips into a smile.
Peach trees were planted in the courtyard, and it was currently the season for them to bloom. A fragrant breeze blew past, and Yu Xuanji slowly closed her eyes, feeling the gentle spring wind on her face.
Something warm and fragrant suddenly touched her lips. Yu Xuanji opened her eyes to see a green qingtuan (sweet green rice ball).
Cang Lan was holding the qingtuan against Yu Xuanji’s lips and said with a smile, “I went out and bought some delicious food. I was just about to wake you up to eat together, but I didn’t expect you to be up so early. Eat it while it’s hot.”
At the dining table, Cang Lan brought out the food box she had brought back. She placed a large bowl of glutinous rice porridge, some fried oil cakes, and the qingtuan in bowls, along with a plate of stir-fried green vegetables.
Cang Lan laughed and said, “I know your health isn’t good, so breakfast shouldn’t be too greasy. I’ve prepared this light porridge and side dishes. Once you’re feeling better, I’ll take you out for a big feast of meat and fish, all right?”
Yu Xuanji smiled and said, “I like whatever you provide.”
Cang Lan was stunned for a moment, and her lips slowly curved into a smile, though a hint of guilt flickered across her face. “Wife, the porridge and vegetables were bought from outside. I don’t know how to cook.”
Yu Xuanji took a sip of the warm glutinous rice porridge and laughed. “What does it matter if you can’t cook? Since you can’t, then eat what I make. I know a thing or two about the culinary arts.”
Cang Lan laughed. “You’re so good, Wife.”
While Yu Xuanji drank her porridge, Cang Lan’s gaze occasionally drifted to her complexion. After a night of spiritual energy nourishment, Yu Xuanji’s face had gone from pale to much rosier, and even her lips had turned a light pink.
However, in the next moment, Cang Lan saw a spider crawling on Yu Xuanji’s lower leg. She held her breath and tried to flick it away with her finger, but the spider unexpectedly crawled inside Yu Xuanji’s clothes.
Cang Lan’s face filled with terror. “Wife! A spider crawled into your clothes!”
Yu Xuanji frowned, put down her spoon, and calmly pinched the spider out, holding it in her palm.
The spider was quite beautiful, its body glowing with a faint blue light, as smooth and shiny as silk.
Seeing Yu Xuanji actually holding the spider in her hand, Cang Lan was so frightened she nearly jumped. She, a magnificent divine dragon, was actually trembling with fear because of a tiny spider. Such an embarrassing thing must never be known by Yu Xuanji.
Yu Xuanji looked at the brightly colored spider in her palm and laughed. “A-Lan, look, it’s so pretty.”
As soon as she spoke, a sharp pain shot through her finger, making her heart quiver. Yu Xuanji looked down and frowned; the spider had somehow bitten two tiny holes into her index finger.
In an instant, the world began to spin. Darkness fell before Yu Xuanji’s eyes. She bit her lower lip hard as her body began to twitch uncontrollably. Her teeth bit into her lip until it was bloodied, and blood began to spill from her mouth.
Cang Lan, who was always sensitive to the scent of blood, no longer felt any fear of spiders upon seeing Yu Xuanji’s terrifying state. She swiped her sleeve to knock the spider away and rushed forward, shouting, “Wife!”
Cang Lan caught Yu Xuanji in her arms before she fell. She gripped Yu Xuanji’s bitten hand and directly put the wound into her mouth, sucking out the poisonous blood that had seeped deep into the skin.
Seeing that the symptoms of poisoning were not subsiding and the veins on Yu Xuanji’s arm were turning a deep purple, Cang Lan sliced her own fingertip. She pinched Yu Xuanji’s chin and let drops of her own blood fall onto her tongue and into her mouth.
Cang Lan had never been moved by matters of life and death, but today, Yu Xuanji’s condition made her lips turn white with fear. The life and death of humans were fated, but she didn’t want Yu Xuanji to die, and she would absolutely not let her die.
Cang Lan activated her spiritual power, letting her essence blood flow from her fingertip, continuously feeding it to Yu Xuanji.
It was also her first time sincerely praying to the heavens.
After a moment, Yu Xuanji suddenly snapped her eyes open. Her eyes had turned a crimson red, and she directly pounced on Cang Lan, knocking her to the ground. She opened her mouth and bit directly into Cang Lan’s neck.
A sharp pain came from her neck, and Cang Lan’s head also hit the corner of the table hard. She lay on the ground gasping, one hand still pressed against Yu Xuanji’s back to protect her.
Cang Lan slowly closed her eyes. When she opened them again, Yu Xuanji was leaning close to her ear, calling her name. “A-Lan… A-Lan…”
A circle of little spirits was standing around watching the excitement. Cang Lan’s eyes widened, and she buried her face in Yu Xuanji’s embrace. In a flash, she transformed into a dragon, coiled around Yu Xuanji, and quickly flew away.
The little red spider looked up at the large hole in the roof and asked, “Sister Lan, have they eloped?”
Lan Yan nodded. “Most likely.”
Returning to the Desolate Lands, Cang Lan originally wanted to hide in the cave of the Dragon Pool, but she saw her subordinates huffing and puffing as they moved a new jade bed.
Yu Xuanji sat atop the black dragon, clutching its pair of horns tightly, and asked, “A-Lan, where are you taking me?”
Cang Lan didn’t know where she was going herself. In any case, it was impossible for her to return to the immortal realm in the short term. Recalling the fragmented dream she’d had, Cang Lan said, “Wife, didn’t you say you wanted to go to the Moon Palace to see Chang’e?”
Yu Xuanji said casually, “When did I ever…”
Her words stopped abruptly. Yu Xuanji’s fingertips twitched slightly, and she said with a smile, “When did I ever say I wanted to see Chang’e? Are you dreaming again?”
Cang Lan replied, ” I can’t quite remember clearly either. After I fainted just now, I seem to have dreamed of you again. The dream was even continuous, but I can’t recall it for the life of me right now. Could it be that I’ve lived too long? But I’ve only just reached adulthood.”
Yu Xuanji kissed her dragon horn and said, “If you can’t remember, then don’t think about it. Have you forgotten what Ming Huang said? He told you to use your brain less and worry less.”
Cang Lan laughed. “All right then. Wife, sit tight and hold on. I’m taking you to elope!”
On the sandy ground of the Desolate Lands, Huang Liu was waving a small red flag to cheer on the iron-eating beast and the grey wolf demon. He looked up and saw a massive black dragon flying through the sky. “Wow, the Demon Sovereign was right; the King and the Madame really are back.”
In the blink of an eye, the black dragon vanished without a trace. Huang Liu scratched his head and asked in confusion, “Why did she run away again?”
Lu Xuan stood nearby with an expressionless face and said, “She’s lost all her dragon face. She probably won’t be back for another ten days to half a month.”
