- Chapter 39.1 - Sweet and Delicious, the Bed Collapsed
Outside the skylight, the moon was bright and the stars were sparse. Occasionally, a cold crow would flit by, flapping its wings. Yu Xuanji curled her lips, a shallow smile lingering in the corners of her eyes. Seeing Cang Lan’s flushed cheeks and shy expression, she couldn’t resist the urge to tease her. She asked with a smile, “What did you say just now? Your voice was too quiet; I couldn’t hear you.”
Cang Lan was both anxious and embarrassed. Being questioned like this by Yu Xuanji even made her a little angry. She sat on the bed, puffing out her cheeks and crossing her arms over her chest. Turning her head away, she grumbled, “My lady clearly heard me but insists on teasing me for fun. I’m not talking to you anymore.”
The smile on Yu Xuanji’s lips deepened. She put down the Bai-Ze brush she was holding, resting it on the table. She laughed and said, “Alright, alright, I heard you. It’s just that my copybook isn’t finished yet. I took a look just now; I wrote an entire book of characters for you, but you’ve practiced less than two pages in total. You spent all your time just looking for my name to practice.”
Cang Lan guiltily glanced out of the corner of her eye at the barely-touched copybook and said, “I…”
Yu Xuanji reached out a hand toward her. “Enough, no excuses. If you haven’t written them, you haven’t written them. From now on, I’m setting a rule: only after you finish one page of the copybook can we have… ‘bedroom activities.'”
Cang Lan’s eyes lit up, and she sat up abruptly. However, Yu Xuanji’s next sentence hit her face like a barrage of hailstones.
Yu Xuanji said, “But I have to inspect it. If the writing isn’t up to standard, you must practice again. It only counts once I say it’s passed. Do you understand?”
Cang Lan sat on the bed with a dejected face, fiddling with the scales on her wrist. She replied listlessly, “I know. I’ll start practicing right now.”
Seeing Cang Lan walk over obediently, Yu Xuanji smiled with relief. But in the next second, the world suddenly turned upside down as she was hoisted onto Cang Lan’s shoulder with one arm.
This “bad dragon” patted her lower back and even gave her a pinch, saying with a wicked grin, “But I want to ‘warm up’ with my lady first. That way, I’ll have the strength to practice writing. What does my lady say?”
Yu Xuanji was tossed about so much she couldn’t get a full sentence out. No matter how much resentment or annoyance she felt, it all eventually dissolved into a sigh.
Cang Lan hurriedly stripped the clothes from Yu Xuanji’s body, tossing them carelessly toward the floor. As the top and pants landed far away, Cang Lan was desperate to press close. However, Yu Xuanji pressed her arm against Cang Lan’s neck and pointed at the clothes on the floor. “That’s a bad habit. What did I tell you before? Don’t throw things around. Go pick them up and put them away properly.”
Cang Lan wailed in protest, but she still obediently picked up the clothes and hung them neatly on the nearby screen. She jumped back onto the bed like she was claiming a reward. “Look, my lady, I put them away. Can we now?”
Yu Xuanji thought for a moment and smiled. “Well, alright then, you… Hiss!”
The dragon lunged forward without any sense of restraint. Yu Xuanji lost her balance, and the back of her head slammed into the headboard. The headboard was made of stone, but fortunately, it was covered with a layer of soft animal hide padding. Otherwise, Yu Xuanji might have seen stars or met a “glorious end” on the spot.
Cang Lan lunged again for another “attack.” Yu Xuanji’s thighs were pinned down, and a palm pressed right against her sensitive inner thigh, causing her to gasp in pain. She heard Cang Lan cry out in alarm, “My lady! Are you alright?”
Though Yu Xuanji wasn’t injured, her head was buzzing as if a dozen bees were circling inside. Cang Lan gripped her shoulders and shook her, making her feel like her brains were being scrambled. She quickly grabbed Cang Lan’s wrists. “I’m fine—”
Cang Lan sat back on the bed, looking as if she were about to burst into tears. Two dragon horns silently emerged from the gap between her forehead and hair, and a black dragon tail drooped behind her. “My lady, I know I was wrong.”
Yu Xuanji stroked her head. She felt that this “bad dragon” was exactly like a large dog that knocks people over in its excitement, then hangs its head and tail in contrition after doing something wrong, sitting obediently to beg for forgiveness.
Seeing this, Yu Xuanji couldn’t stay angry even if she wanted to. Witnessing this, Cang Lan slammed a fist against the headboard and said, “Blame this bed! And this headboard! Why is it so hard? How dare it hit my lady’s head! See if I don’t smash it to pieces!”
Yu Xuanji quickly reached out to stop her. At the very moment Cang Lan’s palm wind was about to strike down, she gripped both of Cang Lan’s hands together and said, “Alright, alright. The bed is innocent. If you break it, we’ll have to sleep on the floor tonight.”
Cang Lan pursed her lips. With her hands held tightly by Yu Xuanji, she couldn’t move, so she lunged forward and nipped at Yu Xuanji’s lips.
As their lips met, Yu Xuanji closed her eyes.
Cang Lan prepared to extinguish the mermaid-tallow candle, but Yu Xuanji caught her wrist and shook her head. “A-Lan, I want to see your face.”
Cang Lan’s lips curled into a smile; this was exactly what she wanted.
The black dragon tail intertwined with snow-white legs. Cang Lan looked down at Yu Xuanji’s pale pink cheeks and slowly took those soft lips into her mouth. As she kissed her, Cang Lan murmured, “My lady is so sweet. Your mouth is sweet, eyes are sweet, nose is sweet, ears are sweet—everywhere is sweet.”
Yu Xuanji’s shoulders quivered under the friction. She involuntarily arched her neck, pulling Cang Lan closer. Her eyes were filled with ripples, like a layer of shimmering water, and her lips were licked to a glossy shine.
Cang Lan, being pulled by the neck, heard Yu Xuanji say, “Is only the mouth sweet? There’s a place you haven’t tasted yet.”
Cang Lan asked in confusion, “There’s actually a place I haven’t tasted? Where is that?”
Yu Xuanji pressed Cang Lan’s neck downward and said with a smile, “The place you mentioned before… where babies are born. Did you forget?”
Cang Lan’s face turned bright red. She swallowed hard and stammered, “I-I-I-I-I… can I really?”
Seeing Cang Lan’s tail perk up, Yu Xuanji smiled and cupped her cheeks. “You can do whatever you want to me.”
Cang Lan’s eyes lit up, and she began to shift her position, seeking her next target.
Yu Xuanji looked up, her eyelashes fluttering. Her palm gently stroked the top of Cang Lan’s head. Suddenly, her eyes widened, and she gripped Cang Lan’s hair tightly, her other hand clutching a cold dragon horn.
Cang Lan felt a pang of pain and looked up at Yu Xuanji with an innocent expression. She licked her lips and said aggrievedly, “My lady, you’re hurting me.”
Yu Xuanji bit her lower lip hard and pressed her foot against Cang Lan’s shoulder to push her away. When she spoke, her voice was thick with emotion. She smiled and asked, “Exactly who is hurting whom, hmm?”
Cang Lan said with a giggle, “My lady, my dragon saliva is good stuff; it can heal wounds. Don’t push me away.”
Yu Xuanji hadn’t expected her to go straight for a “bite.” All these days, their kissing had always avoided Cang Lan’s dragon saliva, as she feared that consuming too much would make her lose herself and fall under the control of this “evil dragon.”
Hearing such an excessive request, it was impossible for Yu Xuanji to agree. However, she couldn’t refuse too harshly, so she made up a random excuse to brush it off.
But this “bad dragon” deliberately pretended not to understand and continued her subtle mischief. Sometimes she made Yu Xuanji cry out in distress, but in the blink of an eye, the little dragon would assume a frail, tearful posture. The moment Yu Xuanji saw that expression, the scolding at the tip of her tongue would do a U-turn.
Between the “chase” and the “escape,” Yu Xuanji dove under the covers, wrapping herself up tightly. But in Cang Lan’s eyes, she was like a sweet, delicious little pastry that only needed to be unwrapped to be enjoyed.
Cang Lan poked the hidden Yu Xuanji, who only curled up tighter. Seeing this, Cang Lan hatched a plan and transformed into her original form to slide through the gaps.
Amidst the back and forth, Cang Lan could have heard a faint sound of cracking, but it was entirely drowned out by her own laughter and Yu Xuanji’s gasps.
The two were locked in an inseparable kiss when the sound of stone splitting grew louder. Yu Xuanji’s eyes snapped open, and she bit Cang Lan’s lip. “Something’s wrong!”
With a crack, the stone bed split right down the middle.
As the entire bed slid apart to both sides, Cang Lan scooped Yu Xuanji up in a horizontal carry. She grabbed a blanket to cover Yu Xuanji’s body and stepped onto the water surface.
The collapse of the stone bed made quite a noise. It instantly startled An Zhi and Ting Lan, who were fast asleep. They scrambled out of bed and ran over before they had even properly put on their clothes.
The Ginseng Baby rubbed its sleepy eyes, clutching the ginseng doll Ting Lan had sewn for it. It followed on its short legs, mumbling in its sleep, “What happened? An earthquake?”
Lu Xuan, who was sleeping curled up on a swing in another stone chamber, heard the commotion and thought a monster was attacking. He transformed into human form and came out to see what had happened.
Yu Xuanji curled up inside the blanket, wishing she could turn invisible. She poked Cang Lan’s abdomen and whispered, “A-Lan, leave! Let’s go!”
Cang Lan didn’t know where to go either, so she simply carried Yu Xuanji barefoot and flew out of the cave, disappearing in the blink of an eye.
An Zhi and Ting Lan arrived with flashlights, only to find the bedroom empty. Not even a hair was left.
Ting Lan said anxiously, “Where are the Master and Cang Lan? Could they have been kidnapped by some monster?”
Huang Liu’s eyes widened in horror as he gnawed on his fingernails. “The battle was so fierce the bed collapsed. Could the Great King and the Madam really be in danger?”
The Iron-Eating Beast huddled with An Zhi, trembling as it said, “The Great King has made many enemies over the years. Could they have formed a group and come for revenge?”
An Zhi walked to the edge of the stone bed, feeling the cracked surface. She shone her flashlight and said, “This was a bed made of naturally formed jade. It looks like it was worth a fortune. A pity it broke like this.”
Lu Xuan stood expressionless, looking as if he wanted to say something but hesitated. “Don’t worry, it wasn’t monsters seeking revenge. This bed…”
Huang Liu clung to Lu Xuan’s leg, crying with snot and tears, even secretly wiping them on Lu Xuan’s pant leg. He wailed, “Lord Demon Sovereign, please, you must save the Great King and the Madam! The Great King has done plenty of bad things and often bullies other monsters. She might have been captured to be skinned and eaten!”
Lu Xuan said through gritted teeth, “I said they are fine, so they are fine. It’s just a collapsed bed. They will return tomorrow. Also… is my pant leg a good place to wipe your face?”
Huang Liu squeaked and was kicked away by Lu Xuan.
Lu Xuan pressed a hand to his forehead, looking at the mess of the bed. He ground his teeth and said, “Enough. They will be back tomorrow during the day. Find a new bed. Take this one out and throw it away.”
An Zhi asked in surprise, “Throw it away? This is top-quality white mutton-fat jade! A small piece is worth a thousand gold. If we take it out and sell it, we’ll be on the global rich list instantly.”
Lu Xuan turned to leave. “Suit yourself.”
Seeing An Zhi so obsessed with money, Ting Lan shook her head helplessly. “We don’t even know when we can leave. Here, even mutton-fat jade is no different from an ordinary stone. What do you want it for?”
Huang Liu added, “This kind of white stone bed is everywhere in the Desolate Lands. If you want one, I’ll take you to find it. Since the Demon Sovereign said to throw it out, let’s throw it out. Maybe it’s the Great King’s wish too.”
Ting Lan looked at the bed thoughtfully. After a moment, her face flushed crimson. She pulled An Zhi away. “Go, go, go. Stop looking.”
An Zhi was confused but followed Ting Lan anyway. She asked, “Ting Lan, what are you doing? I’ve studied jade; the Human Realm couldn’t possibly have mutton-fat jade of this quality. We’d be rich if we moved it out.”
With a red face and a look of hesitation, Ting Lan said, “Still talking… do you even know why this jade bed collapsed?”
An Zhi shook her head. “It got brittle over time?”
Ting Lan pressed her fingers to her forehead. “You… forget it, I can’t explain it to you. In short, let’s have Huang Liu take us to find a new piece of jade tomorrow.”
