- Chapter 38.2 - Asking What One Already Knows — Wanting to Make Little Dragons with My Lady
Cang Lan looked up, kissing her chin and then slowly moving upward to kiss her lips. She said with a smile, “I dreamed we got married. But at first, the one you were marrying wasn’t me. Later… later…”
Yu Xuanji’s voice came from above, soft as she asked, “What happened later?”
Cang Lan smiled and kissed her chin again. “Later, I snatched you away. You became my bride and came home with me.”
Yu Xuanji ran her fingers through the top of Cang Lan’s hair. “It was just a dream. You see my face all day; it would be strange if you didn’t dream of me. Besides, Ming Huang said you shouldn’t try to recall your dreams, or you’ll become delusional and prone to fantasies. Listen to me—don’t think about it anymore, alright?”
Cang Lan nodded, though she let out a regretful sigh. “But that dream felt so real. It was as if it were right before my eyes. I wish I could have stayed in it forever.”
Yu Xuanji’s expression shifted slightly. Her lips were a bit dry as she spoke with a hint of grievance: “What’s so good about a dream? I am right here by your side. If you want to see me, you can see me every day. The first thing you see when you wake up is my face. Why chase after something so illusory?”
Hearing this, Cang Lan keenly sensed that Yu Xuanji seemed upset. She climbed up, cupping Yu Xuanji’s cheeks in her hands. “My lady, I was just speaking casually. Because I had never seen that version of you in a dream, I just…”
Yu Xuanji interrupted her, staring into Cang Lan’s eyes. “Whether in a dream or reality, I am me. I will always be your lady. I will never change.”
Cang Lan was suddenly pulled into a tight embrace. She nodded. “Mhm, my lady is right. You are the same inside and outside of dreams. You are already by my side; how could I be so fickle as to think of someone in a dream?”
Outside the cave, the three great demons, including Huang Liu, had each been struck by Lu Xuan, causing them to vomit up the “poisonous substance” they had eaten.
The three demons knelt on the ground, weeping with gratitude toward Lu Xuan for saving their lives. An Zhi stayed close to the Iron-Eating Beast (Panda), staring at her intently.
The Iron-Eating Beast moved somewhat slowly. She turned her head toward the two humans and asked in surprise, “Why are you staring at me like that?”
An Zhi cupped her chin in her hands, staring blankly at the beast. “Wow, you’re so cute in your human form too. And you talk so slowly—it makes you even cuter!”
Seeing her sister’s lack of composure, Ting Lan whispered, “Stop embarrassing yourself. She’s a demon.”
The Iron-Eating Beast was indeed startled by this human girl. She looked a bit dazed, and it seemed like she was about to drool. She looked like she might have some mental issues.
Seeing this, the beast tried to dodge away, but An Zhi chased after her, looking devastated. “Giant Panda, where are you going? Do you not want to play with me?”
The Iron-Eating Beast widened her eyes. “The King said we shouldn’t play with fools.”
The moment the words left her mouth, An Zhi turned to stone.
Ting Lan sighed helplessly and pulled her hand toward the cave. An Zhi, looking as if she were about to burst into tears, reached out a hand toward the beast in a dramatic farewell: “Oh no!”
Ting Lan pulled her hand back. “Stop making a scene and come back with me.”
Outside the cave was a mess of chaos. Yu Xuanji heard what sounded like An Zhi’s crying and prepared to get up to see what was happening.
Cang Lan, however, easily pinned her down. She said with a smile, “Don’t go, my lady. I’ll go see what the commotion is about.”
Stepping out of the cave, Cang Lan saw Ting Lan pulling An Zhi, while An Zhi was clutching the Iron-Eating Beast’s paw. Human and demon were locked in a tug-of-war.
Seeing Cang Lan, the Iron-Eating Beast looked relieved, as if she had finally found a savior. “King, save me!”
Cang Lan said sternly, “What is going on?”
The Iron-Eating Beast was the first to complain. “King, this human girl is harassing me! She keeps rubbing me all over. My fur is about to be pulled out!”
Cang Lan saw An Zhi sitting on the ground wailing. She thought for a moment—these two had been by Yu Xuanji’s side for so long, if…
Her eyes darted around, and she turned to the Iron-Eating Beast. “You are a thousand-year-old demon. Can’t you just indulge a young girl for a bit?”
The Iron-Eating Beast had expected Cang Lan to take her side. Now it was her turn to cry. “Waaa, King! No, King!”
Cang Lan turned to An Zhi and said, “If you like her, I will have her play with you every day. But there is one condition: you are not allowed to pull her fur anymore.”
An Zhi argued her case: “I didn’t pull her fur! I’ve just never touched a giant panda before, so I found it fascinating. I wouldn’t dream of hurting her.”
Cang Lan was puzzled. “Giant Panda? What is that? This is clearly my Iron-Eating Beast. She was once the mount of Chiyou before I subdued her. She is not some ‘panda’ thing you speak of—it sounds like a weakling.”
Seeing An Zhi about to argue further, Ting Lan quickly stopped her. “Just be content with what you’ve got.”
Ting Lan explained to Cang Lan, “Yes, the Iron-Eating Beast used to be called that, but since they’ve become so rare, they’re now national treasures called giant pandas. They’re the same thing.”
An Zhi nodded vigorously.
Cang Lan was a bit baffled by this explanation and said dismissively, “Fine, fine. Call it whatever you want. I’ll let her stay and play with you. But one thing: you are not allowed to come inside and disturb Xuanji and me. Do you understand?”
Ting Lan and An Zhi said in unison, “Understood!”
An Zhi’s “claws” reached out toward the Iron-Eating Beast. With an expression of noble sacrifice, the beast transformed into a large, round ball of black-and-white fluff and rolled into An Zhi’s embrace.
Cang Lan nodded in satisfaction, thinking that things had finally settled down. She returned to the bedroom to rejoin her lady.
In the bedroom, a faint fragrance lingered. Yu Xuanji was sitting on the bed, holding a special “extended edition” storybook gifted by Tushan Bai, which even featured her signature on the cover.
Yu Xuanji’s lips curved into a smile. She looked at the scene in the storybook where the Black Dragon King was poisoned by her own cooking. She thought to herself that Tushan Bai was truly prophetic.
However, since she could write it, it meant that Cang Lan poisoning herself was not a rare occurrence.
Yu Xuanji felt immense pity in her heart, but she couldn’t help the smile that crept onto her lips. She read on, eventually unable to stifle a laugh.
This laugh was caught by Cang Lan, who was peeking from the doorway. As Yu Xuanji looked up, Cang Lan swept in like a whirlwind, snatching the book away. She said coldly, “What is my lady reading?”
Yu Xuanji smiled gently. “Nothing much.”
Cang Lan didn’t believe her. She felt Yu Xuanji must be laughing at her. Could she be laughing at the fact that she had poisoned herself and passed out today?
In that moment, Cang Lan felt she had lost all face in front of Yu Xuanji. What puzzled her, though, was why everyone else who ate her food collapsed while Yu Xuanji remained perfectly fine.
Cang Lan was curious, but she was too embarrassed to ask. It was just too humiliating for a dragon.
Yu Xuanji saw the question in Cang Lan’s heart. She said with a smile, “Today’s cooking was actually a big improvement. It was just a bit too salty. It would be better if it were a bit lighter.”
Cang Lan took this as a compliment and leaned in to nuzzle her. She said happily, “I knew my lady cared for me. Since you like it, how about I cook for you every day?”
The smile on Yu Xuanji’s lips froze for a heartbeat, but her face showed no change. Then, her smile deepened. “Alright.”
After washing up, Yu Xuanji saw Cang Lan sitting quietly at the desk, practicing her calligraphy. She walked over, feeling pleased, only to see that the entire page was covered in three words: “Yu Xuanji.”
Yu Xuanji sighed helplessly. “A-Lan, why do you keep writing my name? Why aren’t you practicing the copybook I wrote for you? At this rate, when will you be able to read Dream of the Red Chamber on your own?”
Cang Lan said as if it were the most natural thing in the world, “My lady is the most important person in my life. I must be able to write your name to perfection.”
Yu Xuanji laughed. “It’s just a name. Why does it need to be ‘to perfection’…”
Taking the paper from Cang Lan’s hand, Yu Xuanji’s words cut off, and the smile on her lips slowly vanished.
Seeing this, Cang Lan leaned in to claim a kiss as a reward. “My lady, do you think my drawing is beautiful?”
On the paper was a rudimentary drawing of a room, looking like the work of a three-year-old. Yet Yu Xuanji could tell that Cang Lan had drawn the scene of their wedding.
She was the one with the veil over her eyes; Cang Lan was the one lifting it.
Yu Xuanji’s lips moved as she asked, “Why did you draw this?”
Cang Lan licked her lips. “My lady, after I woke up, this scene kept appearing in my mind. I couldn’t see the woman’s face clearly under the veil, but I know it was you. It could only be you.”
Yu Xuanji swallowed hard and slowly rolled up the drawing. “A-Lan, it’s late. Let’s leave the writing for tomorrow. You lost some of your essence today; it’s better to rest early.”
Lying in bed, both were preoccupied with their own thoughts.
Yu Xuanji lay with her back to Cang Lan, her eyes wide open with no sign of sleep.
They didn’t read Dream of the Red Chamber. Cang Lan didn’t mind, but as she held Yu Xuanji, a romantic thought began to bloom in her heart.
She wanted to snuggle with her lady, kiss her lady, and make little dragons with her lady.
A hand quietly pressed against Yu Xuanji’s lower abdomen. She blinked gently; without turning around or asking, she knew what Cang Lan wanted.
Yu Xuanji didn’t stop her. Instead, she became indulgent, slowly stretching her neck to reveal her fair throat.
To humans and beasts alike, that was the most vulnerable spot. Yet, Cang Lan easily took it between her teeth.
Yu Xuanji was willing.
This was a long-standing hunting habit of Cang Lan’s—to seize the prey’s throat with sharp teeth and deliver a fatal blow.
Yu Xuanji slowly closed her eyes. The skin on her neck felt itchy.
Cang Lan snuggled up with a giggle, embracing Yu Xuanji from behind. Her lips pressed against the other’s earlobe. “My lady, I noticed that certain scent is gone from you. Is your period over?”
Yu Xuanji’s palm rested on Cang Lan’s hand on her belly. She asked, knowing the answer, “What do you want to do?”
Cang Lan nuzzled against her for a while, her face flushing as she bashfully buried her head in the crook of Yu Xuanji’s neck. “My lady is asking what she already knows. My lady is so naughty.”
Seeing her shy appearance, Yu Xuanji couldn’t help but tease her. She squeezed Cang Lan’s slender fingers and asked, “I don’t know. Can A-Lan tell me?”
Cang Lan was so shy that her tail popped out, tapping lightly against the empty part of the stone bed. After a moment, she quietly slipped under the covers, her tail familiarly wrapping around Yu Xuanji’s waist.
“I want to make little dragons with my lady.”
