- Chapter 28.2 - The Tail is Too Thick, It Won’t Fit
The dragon drew closer. An zhi and Tinglan slowly closed their eyes, quietly waiting for death.
At that moment, a gentle woman’s voice rang out.
Tinglan’s eyes snapped open.
The dragon’s gaping maw instantly snapped shut, and the crushing pressure vanished.
Tinglan scrambled up and looked toward the sound in disbelief. A woman dressed in black was slowly walking out.
Cang Lan walked to Yu Xuanji’s side and said, “My Lady, some thieves broke into our home. I was just about to deal with them.”
Yu Xuanji asked, “What thieves?”
Cang lan’s voice wasn’t loud, but Tinglan and An zhi heard her clearly as she called their Master “My Lady.” The two scrambled up, looking at Yu Xuanji in utter disbelief. “Master?”
Yu Xuanji curled her lips into a gentle smile. “What ‘Master’? Alan, I think they just came in to seek shelter from the rain. It must be a misunderstanding; let them go.”
An zhi looked at Cang Lan as if she’d seen a ghost, stammering, “You… you… aren’t you already… mmph!”
Suddenly unable to speak, An zhi looked to Tinglan for help, pointing at her mouth and shaking her head vigorously, making muffled sounds.
Tinglan tried to speak, but her lips felt as though they were stuck together with glue; she couldn’t open her mouth at all.
Cang Lan decided they didn’t look like good people. She turned to Yu Xuanji and said, “My Lady, these two don’t look like anything good.”
An zhi’s eyes widened. She waved her arms, pointing at Yu Xuanji and then at her own mouth, gesturing frantically.
Cang Lan found it increasingly strange. These two seemed to have been placed under a silence spell. They were talkative a moment ago, but now they couldn’t speak.
Yu Xuanji smiled, looking entirely oblivious to what was happening.
Cang Lan, holding the philosophy that it was better to kill a mistake than let a threat go, said, “My Lady, I think these two thieves look shifty. They tried to claim a connection with you the moment they came in. They probably have ulterior motives—maybe they’re here to steal.”
An zhi suddenly managed to shout, “Don’t you dare frame us!”
Tinglan grabbed An zhi’s arm from behind, frowning and shaking her head: Say less or you’ll get us killed!
Cang Lan stood with one hand holding Yu Xuanji’s and the other on her hip, cold-sneering. “Framing you? You two thieves break into this King’s grotto in the middle of the night and dare to say I’m framing you? You must be tired of living.”
An zhi looked at Yu Xuanji piteously. “Master, please say something! Tinglan and I entered the Barren Lands specifically to find you. Seeing that you are safe and sound now, we are relieved.”
Cang Lan looked at Yu Xuanji in confusion. “Master? My Lady, do you know these two thieves?”
An zhi gritted her teeth. “We are not thieves!”
Yu Xuanji shook her head blankly. “I don’t believe I know them.”
Two lines of tears streamed down An zhi’s face. She said in disbelief, “Master, you… you haven’t lost your memory, have you? I’m An zhi, and this is Tinglan. You gave us our names! Have you really forgotten us?”
Yu Xuanji lowered her gaze. “I had a fall a few days ago and forgot many things.”
Cang Lan stepped in front of Yu Xuanji, warning coldly, “My Lady has amnesia. You two thieves better not try to deceive her. If I find out…”
Cang lan’s human fingers suddenly grew sharp, silver-glinting dragon claws. A ball of blue flame rose from her palm, illuminating the entire cave.
An zhi backed away a few steps. The karmic fire of a true dragon could easily incinerate her soul, erasing her from existence entirely.
Yu Xuanji said, “Alan, I suspect they really do know me, otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to call out my name so accurately. I have never known my true identity; why don’t we let them stay?”
Alarm bells rang in Cang lan’s heart. She knew she absolutely could not let these two stays. If these thieves really knew Yu Xuanji and started telling her about her life before the amnesia, her lies would be completely exposed.
I’m doomed, I’m doomed!
Cang Lan gritted her teeth, holding Yu Xuanji by the waist from behind. Her pale gold eyes stared coldly at the two girls who were neither human nor ghost. She could sense from their aura that they weren’t human, but spiritual entities that could possess soulless objects.
But how could Yu Xuanji know such people? And they called her Master—did Yu Xuanji also harbor some unspeakable secret?
Cang lan’s eyes darted around. “I think they have bad intentions. If we keep them, it’s like nursing a tiger that will eventually bite us. My Lady, I’m only thinking of your safety. Their words cannot be trusted.”
Yu Xuanji took Canglan’s hand, her thumb slowly stroking the dragon girl’s palm. She laughed. “A-lan, I know what I’m doing. With you here, I don’t need to worry about my safety.”
Hearing this, though she was extremely reluctant, Cang Lan finally nodded. She struck two scales into their bodies and said coldly, “My Lady is kind-hearted and willing to let you stay. But if you do one thing wrong or say one wrong word, you will be reduced to ashes instantly. Consider yourselves warned.”
An zhi rushed forward to argue, but Tinglan caught her waist from behind, shaking her head with a solemn expression.
The two were settled in the study. The Ginseng Baby was sleeping in its little bed. When it saw two pretty sisters walk in, its eyes lit up. “Wow! Pretty sisters! Did Long-long bring you to sleep with me? Long-long is the best!”
Cang Lan expressionlessly set up a barrier, isolating the three annoying creatures inside, and turned to leave. She was fuming. She stomped into the bedroom, yanked back the covers, and dove in, clinging tightly to Yu Xuanji’s waist.
Yu Xuanji felt a dull thud in her chest from the impact. She took a deep breath, knowing the little dragon was throwing a tantrum again. She gently pulled her into her arms and asked softly, “A-lan, why are you unhappy?”
Cang Lan rubbed her head against Yu Xuanji’s chest, whimpering several times. “Why is My Lady so nice to everyone? Why can’t you only be nice to me? I’m so jealous of them.”
Yu Xuanji stroked Canglan’s hair, her fingers sliding through the strands to massage her warm, soft scalp. She smiled. “I am your wife; in this world, I will only be truly good to you.”
Cang Lan felt resentful, thinking Yu Xuanji was just coaxing her. She couldn’t help saying, “But you speak so gently and politely to those people, and you even let them sleep in our house. Our home isn’t a shelter; why let every random ghost and monster in? What if they’re bad people?”
Yu Xuanji’s stroking was practiced and soothing. Soon, the jealous little dragon began to soften, her voice becoming a bit weaker than usual. “It’s not that I’m complaining, but My Lady, you’re just too soft-hearted. You’ll be taken advantage of sooner or later.”
Cang Lan lay on top of Yu Xuanji, nuzzling her neck. She gave a devious smile. “How about this: tonight, while they aren’t looking, I’ll throw them into the Death Desert ten thousand miles away and see if they can ever get out.”
As soon as she said that, her chin was gently pinched by Yu Xuanji. “Alan, they haven’t committed any heinous crimes. Do you remember what I told you before?”
Cang Lan answered gloomily, “Be broad-minded and treat others with courtesy. Don’t go around killing people; stay calm. I remember everything My Lady says, but I just hate those two.”
The more Cang Lan thought about it, the more uneasy she felt, sensing her position was in jeopardy. “My Lady, I heard them call you Master. Your relationship must have been exceptionally close, and…”
Yu Xuanji asked, “And what?”
Canglan’s heart was full of doubts. She recalled what the Ghost Immortal named An zhi had said, and she immediately lost her composure. From Anzhi’s behavior, it seemed that ghost knew her too.
Her heart hammered against her ribs. The strings in Cang lan’s mind tightened. “No… it’s nothing. I just think those two seem to know me, yet I don’t know them. Could there be something wrong with my memory?”
Yu Xuanji rubbed the back of Cang lan’s neck. “Perhaps they have the wrong person. There are many people in this world with similar faces and voices. Maybe they are just mistaken.”
Cang Lan nodded with an “oh,” then heard Yu Xuanji continue, “Since they are close to me, perhaps they know what happened before I lost my memory. Tomorrow, I will go and question them thoroughly. Maybe I’ll even recover my memories.”
Cang lan’s eyes went wide. She rolled them guiltily, holding her breath and not daring to say a word. She coughed twice, trying to cover it up. “But I really think those two are devious. They cannot be easily trusted.”
Yu Xuanji asked with a smile, “Then what do you suggest? Should we keep them, or let them go?”
Cang Lan licked her lips. “If you ask me, it’s better to pull them up by the roots.”
Yu Xuanji chuckled. “But they are my only hope for recovering my memory.”
Cang Lan was displeased, muttering, “Does My Lady really want to recover her memory that badly?”
Yu Xuanji thought for a moment. “It’s not that urgent.”
Cang Lan stiffened her neck for one last stand. “Recovering memories sounds good, but what if those memories are painful things you’d rather not remember? Wouldn’t My Lady regret it?”
Yu Xuanji’s hand paused briefly while stroking Cang lan’s hair. Her gaze drifted toward the distance, as if looking at something far away. She murmured to herself, “Would I regret it…”
Cang Lan looked up and kissed Yu Xuanji’s chin, then shyly turned her head away. “The past is unknown, but if it really consists of unbearable memories, it might be better not to remember at all, to save yourself from a lifetime of heartache.”
Having said that, Cang Lan gave Yu Xuanji a bright smile. “Does My Lady think I’m right?”
Yu Xuanji cupped Canglan’s cheeks, pressing her forehead against the dragons, and curled her lips. “In that case, I will listen to you.”
