Huang Liu was still counting the tribute items. Seeing Yu Xuanji and Cang Lan walking over together, she stood up straight: “Great King! Madam!”
Yu Xuanji saw Huang Liu holding a writing brush, drawing and writing in the ledger. She said, “Huang Liu, let me see your ledger.”
Huang Liu obediently presented the ledger. Before Yu Xuanji opened it, a shallow smile hung on her lips. But when she received the ledger, that faint smile gradually disappeared, replaced by a furrow in her brow.
Seeing Yu Xuanji frowning, Cang Lan asked in confusion, “My Lady, is there something wrong with the ledger?”
Yu Xuanji shook her head. “No problem with the ledger itself, but who drew the things on here?”
Huang Liu patted her chest and said with a face full of pride, “Madam, I drew those! I’m responsible for recording all the tributes presented by those demon kings!”
Yu Xuanji looked at those nonsensical “earthworm characters” in the ledger and nodded with a smile. “Well, recording it this way is quite clear at a glance. Carry on.”
Praised by Yu Xuanji, Huang Liu took the ledger back with a grin. The big, golden, fluffy tail behind her stood up high as she bragged to the Iron-Eating Beast (Panda): “Look, even the Madam appreciates my talent and praises my competence. From now on, besides the Great King, I am the boss.”
The Iron-Eating Beast blinked its small, jet-black eyes and slapped the arrogant weasel away with one paw.
It was also the first time Yu Xuanji had seen so many treasures in the cave dwelling. After patrolling around, she found that most of the tribute treasures were gemstones. It seemed the Dragon Clan really did love shiny things most of all.
Seeing that Yu Xuanji also liked them, Cang Lan grabbed her hand and said, “My Lady, these gemstones are only a few. The depths of the Dragon Pool are filled with the gemstones I’ve collected over these thousands of years. If my Lady likes them, I will give them all to my Lady for safekeeping. What is mine is yours.”
Huang Liu and the other two great demons were secretly listening from behind, feeling their teeth go sour from the sweetness of it.
The three demons huddled together and whispered. Huang Liu said, “Good grief, it seems the Great King has truly fallen into the river of love. She wouldn’t even let us look at those treasures of hers.”
The Gray Wolf Demon agreed: “Yeah, yeah. Last time I just touched it once, the Great King got angry. Yet she actually said she’d give all the gemstones to the Madam.”
The Iron-Eating Beast said, “The Great King and Madam are so affectionate. Why hasn’t a single egg been laid after all this time? I want to play with a tiny little dragon.”
As the three demons whispered in the back, Cang Lan’s face turned red. Unable to bear it any longer, she said through gritted teeth, “You don’t think this King can’t hear you, do you?”
The three great demons scattered in fear, fleeing the cave dwelling to the Bodhi tree outside.
Squatting under the tree, Huang Liu continued the Iron-Eating Beast’s thought: “But I feel that the birth of a little dragon cub isn’t far off.”
After leading Yu Xuanji to see all the tributes, Cang Lan was twirling that legendary Baize Brush in her hand. She twirled it so much that it flew right out, rolling on the ground for several turns.
Seeing Yu Xuanji’s gaze sweep over the brush, Cang Lan guiltily picked it up and gripped it tightly in her hand, flashing a toothy grin at Yu Xuanji.
Yu Xuanji shook her head helplessly and reminded her, “The Baize Brush won’t break, but you shouldn’t keep dropping it. I’ve heard a small sprite lives inside; if it gets angry and runs away from home, the brush will lose its divine power.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, she saw Cang Lan holding it with both hands above her eyes, staring at it and chanting, “Where is it? How come I don’t see that sprite?”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “It’s just a legend. Perhaps that sprite is currently inside sleeping.”
Cang Lan usually sank those gemstones into the depths of the Cold Pool to prevent other demons from stealing them; however, under her watch, such a thing was virtually impossible.
Among the tribute treasures, there were several things Yu Xuanji liked, such as ink sticks and ink slabs from thousands of years ago, as well as sets of beautiful tea sets.
Cang Lan knew Yu Xuanji liked stationery and felt the Old Phoenix’s stuff was too ordinary, so she picked out a few items from the middle, intending to put them in the study for Yu Xuanji to play with.
Almost all these tributes were ancient artifacts from a thousand years ago. Yu Xuanji could tell their quality just by a slight touch.
Yu Xuanji took a liking to a set of azure-colored ice-crackle tea sets; the color was as beautiful as the moonlight under the sky. She stroked the tea sets soothingly, her fingertips slowly grazing over them, her eyes reflecting a look of joy.
Cang Lan saw at a glance that Yu Xuanji liked this set of tea sets. She smiled and said, “Since my Lady likes it, I’ll get some tea leaves and wash the teapot and cups. I happened to study how to brew tea recently. The tea I brew will surely be the best in the world.”
No sooner said than done. Cang Lan carried Yu Xuanji to the Bodhi tree, placed her gently in a chair, and disappeared in the blink of an eye.
Yu Xuanji rested her arm on the stone table and her chin on the back of her hand. Watching Cang Lan’s fleeting back, she curved her lips helplessly.
Cang Lan did everything quickly. At the thought of Yu Xuanji being able to drink the tea she brewed, she was full of energy, wishing she could scrub a layer of skin off the teapot.
The ice-crackle pattern was relatively fragile. When Cang Lan wiped it, she could clearly hear the sound of cracking. She examined the cup curiously, pinched it gently with her hand, and poured some water in.
Although it was called “ice-crackle,” it didn’t leak at all. After observing for a while, Cang Lan finally carried the tray out.
Bored while sitting under the tree, Yu Xuanji picked up a twig and began drawing in the sand. First, she wrote the two characters “Cang Lan,” then drew a simplified version of a small dragon next to them.
This small dragon had its claws and fangs out, its tail swaying behind it. On a whim, Yu Xuanji took out the Baize Brush and drew a faint golden dragon in the air. This dragon flew vividly in the sky for a while before being scattered by a flock of passing crows.
As soon as Cang Lan stepped out, she heard the “caw caw” of crows. she hated these annoying crows most of all; they were pitch black and always gossiping, their calls being horribly unpleasant.
After driving away the “intelligence officers” of the Barren Lands from the sky, Cang Lan brought the tray to Yu Xuanji and placed it on the stone table, ready to enjoy the private world of a couple.
Cang Lan very diligently poured the boiled tea into the tea sets. Holding a cup with both hands, she impatiently brought it to Yu Xuanji’s lips: “My Lady, hurry and try the tea I brewed.”
Yu Xuanji’s eyes squinted from the rush of hot air. She knew that this temperature was like lukewarm water to Cang Lan. She smiled and said, “A-Lan, the tea is too hot. It will burn me.”
Cang Lan was stunned. “My Lady, I don’t think it’s hot at all. I was even afraid the water temperature wasn’t high enough and the tea wouldn’t taste good.”
Yu Xuanji smiled. “But I am just an ordinary human. Water that is even slightly hot can burn me.”
Cang Lan quickly took the cup back, blew on it several times at her lips, and like a child who had done something wrong, she placed the cooled tea by Yu Xuanji’s hand. Full of apology, she said, “I’m sorry, my Lady. I actually overlooked such a small thing. It’s my fault.”
Yu Xuanji stroked the skin on the back of Cang Lan’s hand, which she hadn’t yet withdrawn, her fingertips grazing it twice. She said, “How can this be your fault?”
Cang Lan said guiltily, “But I didn’t realize it early on. I truly deserve to be punished!”
Yu Xuanji held the teacup to her nose. She lightly inhaled the tea fragrance and smiled: “Good tea. The fragrance is rich and the tea aura is fresh. It’s better than what I brew.”
Praised by Yu Xuanji, Cang Lan scratched her hair and laughed sheepishly, staring at Yu Xuanji with a face full of expectation: “My Lady, hurry and taste the flavor.”
Yu Xuanji took a sip of the clear tea. She paused for a brief moment, then finished the entire cup of bitter, strong tea with a smile.
She had no idea how many tea leaves Cang Lan had put into the teapot. In all her years of living, this was the first time she had tasted something so bitter.
Yu Xuanji sighed: “It is indeed an excellent tea.”
After finishing a cup of tea, Yu Xuanji took the ice-crackle cup in her hand to toy with it.
The teapot filled with hot tea occasionally made two crisp cracking sounds, which were clear and pleasant to the ear.
Just as Yu Xuanji was about to pick up the teapot to look, the teacup in her right hand suddenly shattered into shards from a slight bit of force. One sharp edge stabbed directly into her fingertip.
“Hiss…”
Yu Xuanji sucked in a breath, her brow furrowing slightly. She placed the fragments from her palm onto the tabletop. Just as she was dealing with the shards stuck to her palm, Cang Lan walked out carrying a plate of freshly washed fruit.
Cang Lan was grinning as she held the sliced fruit platter, thinking Yu Xuanji would be very happy to see it.
Edible fruit was exceptionally rare in the Barren Lands. This was a peach tree that Cang Lan had had Huang Liu and the others search for a long time. After absorbing Cang Lan’s spiritual energy, it bloomed and bore fruit the next day.
As she drew near, Cang Lan saw striking blood dripping from Yu Xuanji’s fingertip, and there were broken porcelain pieces on the stone table, faintly stained with blood.
Cang Lan’s scalp went numb. She dropped the fruit platter and rushed forward, grabbing her wrist tightly. Before Yu Xuanji could speak, without thinking, she leaned down and took the bleeding wound directly into her mouth.
Yu Xuanji was about to stop her, but it was too late: “A-Lan! Don’t…”
Upon hearing this, Cang Lan looked up with a face full of confusion, the tip of Yu Xuanji’s index finger still in her mouth. Her eyes were full of heartache and self-blame.
Her soft tongue licked back and forth over the salty, warm wound. The deep gash began to undergo subtle changes, healing rapidly upon contact with the dragon saliva.
After licking for a short while, the wound on Yu Xuanji’s fingertip had completely healed. Except for a trace of glistening dragon saliva, one could not see any sign of a tiny wound at all.
“Look, my Lady! The wound is better!” Cang Lan looked up proudly as if seeking a reward, holding Yu Xuanji’s fingertip with a smile: “I told you before—my dragon saliva is the best golden sore medicine in the world. Just a little bit, and not even half a scar will be seen.”
Cang Lan finished her words and found that Yu Xuanji was not paying attention to her. She stared at Yu Xuanji in confusion: “My Lady, why is your face so red? Oh! Your hand is so hot too!”
Cang Lan quickly reached out to touch Yu Xuanji’s forehead, and she instantly became anxious: “My Lady! Your forehead is burning! You couldn’t be sick, could you? I’ll go get medicine for you!”
However, Yu Xuanji grabbed her wrist and pulled her back with force.
Cang Lan was pulled so hard she stumbled. She sat on the ground, looking up at Yu Xuanji’s crimson face, and was thoroughly startled: “My… My Lady…”
Yu Xuanji’s lip color was originally a faint red, but at this moment, they were like a ripe, vivid red berry—a gentle squeeze could burst forth soft, rotten, and sweet juice.
Cang Lan stared at Yu Xuanji’s lips in a daze, at a loss.
Yu Xuanji’s chest heaved up and down. Her breathing gradually became heavy, and the sounds leaking from her throat were soft and cloying: “A-Lan, besides healing wounds, do you know what else your dragon saliva does?”
This time, Cang Lan finally realized what was strange about Yu Xuanji. From the inside out, she was emitting a sweet and strange fragrance that was passing through her nasal cavity, invading and penetrating her internal organs.
Cang Lan’s body froze like a stone. She didn’t even know how to move her hands. She shook her head in a daze: “I don’t know.”
Yu Xuanji clenched her molars, her endurance reaching the point where the veins on her forehead were bulging slightly: “You really don’t know?”
Cang Lan was terrified by Yu Xuanji’s current appearance and stammered: “I… I don’t know…”
Yu Xuanji swallowed hard, her voice coming out as a sweet, cloying strain. She leaned close to Cang Lan’s ear, the corners of her eyes flushed with a trace of moist red, her voice alluring and enchanting:
“It is the best aphrodisiac in this world.”
