- Chapter 11 - No Standing
After her body temperature had thoroughly subsided, Cui Yu acted split and acted spoiled to get discharged from the hospital. She had learned that Jiao Jin was moving and hoped she could help out.
In truth, Jiao Jin didn’t want a patient doing manual labor, but when the glamorous woman called out “A-Jin, please?” over and over, it could turn even a heart of stone into a soft reed. Jiao Jin struggled to maintain a calm expression, but the moment Cui Peining followed them downstairs and got into her car, her face shifted to one of helplessness. “Second Miss, what are you doing here too?”
“Aren’t you moving? I’m going to help my sister, is that a problem? What does it have to do with you?”
“Fine, fine, I really can’t afford to offend you Cuis.”
Acting as a dutiful chauffeur, Jiao Jin brought the two young mistresses to her studio apartment. It was actually very clean and tidy, but Cui Peining still wore a look of disdain. “So small? How are my sister and you both supposed to live here?”
To be honest, even the most even-tempered person could be provoked by this high and mighty Second Miss, but Jiao Jin endured it and went to pack her luggage.
Instead, it was Cui Yu who frowned and glanced at Cui Peining. “Why would you say that? I think A-Jin’s home is very cozy.”
“Sister, why are you still protecting her?”
Knowing that Cui Peining was her sister, yet having lost her memory, Cui Yu couldn’t accept such a spoiled and willful Second Miss, even with the innate sense of closeness she felt. Cui Yu became uncharacteristically stern. “It’s not about protecting her, it’s the truth. I’m very happy living here.”
As an extreme “sister-con,” Cui Peining lowered her head and stopped speaking.
“Peining, you need to apologize to A-Jin.”
“I have to…” Apologize to her?
The indignant words weren’t finished before she surrendered under Cui Yu’s cold gaze. With the DNA of fearing her elder sister deep in her bones, Cui Peining bit her lip and suddenly bowed deeply toward Jiao Jin, who was packing clothes. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that about you just now.”
Hearing the commotion behind her clearly, Jiao Jin felt a long-lost warmth at the moment she was defended. She shook her head and refocused on packing.
She didn’t have many clothes, but having a penchant for cleanliness, she needed to bring her own bedding and quilts. She pulled out some vacuum bags. While she was vacuuming the air out, she noticed Cui Yu had come to her side, her eyes full of concern. “Are you unhappy because of what Peining said?”
So, she came to check on my mood?
Jiao Jin’s chest rose and fell slightly. In truth, that soft, beautiful voice was clear even in a noisy environment, but Jiao Jin pretended not to hear. She raised her voice slightly, “What did you say?”
She then pointed to the machine extracting air from the compression bag, her meaning obvious.
“I said, are you unhappy?”
“What?”
Since her throat was naturally thinner, even shouting intentionally couldn’t compete with the surrounding noise. Cui Yu sighed and gently patted Jiao Jin’s back as if to comfort her.
Feeling both warmed and amused, the “little white rabbit” was actually trying to comfort her now. Jiao Jin stuffed the quilt, now compressed to the size of a coat, into her suitcase. Her own things were packed.
Only then did she realize Cui Yu didn’t have a suitcase. Jiao Jin pulled out a suitcase left behind by her younger sister, Jiao Ran. “Do you have anything you want to bring?”
“Just bring everything you bought for me yesterday.”
“Alright.”
Jiao Jin had intended to pack for the patient herself, but seeing Cui Yu run over to take the bags for fear of being a burden, she watched her arrange them neatly into the suitcase. She seemed quite organized.
Cui Peining watched this, feeling speechless. She wanted to snap at Jiao Jin, but remembering that this person was now her sister’s “reverse scale” and weakness, she stifled her anger.
Her sister used to roll her eyes whenever Jiao Jin was mentioned, so how did she become like this?!
With a helpless sigh, Cui Peining followed the two chatting women into the car. Her resentment almost permeated from the backseat to the driver and passenger seats in front.
The three-bedroom apartment prepared by General Cui was much more luxurious than Jiao Jin’s minimalist decor, but it wasn’t gaudy. The overall design used a black and grey palette, if anything, it suited Cui Yu’s pre-amnesia “sexual frigidity” style of sophisticated elegance.
Normally, Jiao Jin knew she would definitely stay in the smaller guest room, so she headed straight for that room. However, she saw Cui Yu who she thought would definitely stay in the master bedroom with the private bath and balcony, walk into the second bedroom directly opposite her.
Equally surprised by Cui Yu’s decisive and unhesitating action, Cui Peining, being a sister-con, naturally wanted her sister to have the best room. But at that moment, she also saw Cui Yu smiling at Jiao Jin, saying, “I’m staying right across from you.”
So, she wanted to be closer to Jiao Jin’s room.
Her teeth felt sour from the sheer “sweetness” of the scene. Cui Peining already regretted intentionally letting Jiao Jin take the protection order. She thought living with her sister would be happy, but now, this wasn’t three people living together, it was just the two of them plus herself.
Cui Peining had already had the Cui family servants send her luggage over. Resentfully, she dragged her suitcase into the master bedroom, suddenly feeling that the large space made her feel even more lonely. Dammit!
After everything was settled, Jiao Jin drove to the Memory Bureau to take up her post. Her subordinates already knew about the change in leadership and held a celebration ceremony for her.
The whole afternoon was spent on the party. However, knowing that everyone was just a worker and it was good to relax for an afternoon, Jiao Jin thanked them and finally went to the Director’s office.
Why had she wanted to work at the Memory Bureau for so many years?
Because she actually had no memories from before the age of six. When she first opened her eyes, she was told by the orphanage that she had undergone memory processing surgery. They said she used to have frequent nightmares because of her memories, so a philanthropist paid for her to have all memories before age six removed.
Memory processing surgery was a hot topic nowadays. Due to the extension of human lifespans, people often ended up with many unnecessary memories. Thus, the Memory Bureau was established over a decade ago. Staff here could implant chips in people’s brains to extract and archive memories. If someone regretted the surgery, they could come back to have the chip removed and restore their memories.
Jiao Jin wanted to join the Memory Bureau specifically to retrieve her own memories.
However, because she had no guardian and the Memory Bureau had just been established at the time, she was essentially used as a test subject. Three years ago, while she was still dating Cui Yu, Jiao Jin learned that none of the chips were labeled with her name.
In other words, the memory chip for the person “Jiao Jin” could not be found at all.
Only now, as the Director of the Memory Bureau with the authority to view all memory chips, could Jiao Jin begin searching for her memories step by step.
She opened the file labeled with memory chips on the massive computer screen. Instantly, millions of videos appeared before her eyes, listed under various names. Jiao Jin looked through them one by one, but realized it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
However, she truly wanted to know her past. When she suddenly saw a video labeled “Jiao Jin” (using a different character for Jin), her eyes widened. She clicked it without hesitation, only to find some first person perspective intimate videos.
She turned off the projector in frustration. Looking out the transparent glass window, the night was already blanketed by moonlight. The bright, cold glow illuminated a small red dot on her wrist, it was a call from her younger sister.
“Xiao Ran, what’s wrong?”
“Sister, I just got a call. From the tone, it sounded like that mean woman Cui Peining. She seemed to think my number was yours and told you to hurry back.”
When the payment was made, the burning flame avatar had actually indicated it was Jiao Ran’s number. Jiao Jin ignored Cui Peining and asked, “How has Xiao Ran been at school lately? Sister will go see you tomorrow, okay?”
“Sister must be very busy right now, right?”
“It’s okay. Xiao Ran is the most important.”
“By the way, sister, Cui Yu was also on the phone. I recognized her voice, but she actually asked who I was to you, sounding very jealous. Are you two… back together?”
Jiao Jin felt a bit helpless. So much had happened in the last two days, and Jiao Ran’s classes were busy, so Jiao Jin had only now remembered to explain. “No, Cui Yu has amnesia. Remember that kidnapping case I told you about? She was the victim. For some reason, she lost her memory and has latched onto me.”
“I see, that scared me. Sister, you definitely must not get back together with Cui Yu. She was so awful three years ago, even I was angry.”
“Yeah, don’t worry, I definitely won’t get back with her. Has Xiao Ran finished a whole day of classes? You should rest well. Sister will see you at school tomorrow.”
“Okay! I’ll definitely get a good night’s sleep so I can wait for sister in my best state!”
Hanging up with a smile, family truly was her greatest source of courage. She had always used her sister as her motivation, enduring any hardship. Now, after their talk, even the sadness of not finding her memories had vanished. Jiao Jin picked up her coat from the chair and drove back to the Cui family’s three bedrooms apartment.
Just as she inserted the key, the door opened automatically as if it had heard a magic spell. Jiao Jin looked up to see the woman who seemed to have been waiting at the door for her return. Her features were like a painting, her nose slightly red. Cui Yu bit her lower lip softly, looking pitiful as if she had been crying earlier.
Seeing that she seemed to have something to say, Jiao Jin stood at the door without moving, waiting for her to speak.
“You… I, I wanted to contact you just now, so I had Peining call the number from yesterday’s transfer. But… but, who was that girl?”
She didn’t want to sound like she was interrogating, after all, she had no standing and no reason. There was only a persistent ache in her heart. Cui Yu bit harder and harder until her lower lip lost all color.
Jiao Jin laughed helplessly and leaned against the doorframe, crossing her arms with a lazy expression. “Cui Yu, are you my girlfriend? Why are you being so nosy?”
“I… I’m not…”
She began to grow anxious. Being looked at by such sharp, vibrant eyes actually made her heart race. Especially after hearing the words “girlfriend” laced with a smile, Cui Yu’s body trembled slightly, and the quiver in her voice couldn’t be hidden. “But… but I want to be.”
What did that mean?
Jiao Jin’s gaze fixed unblinkingly on Cui Yu’s lowered eyelashes, dense and long, like the fluttering wings of a butterfly, revealing the tension and shyness the owner tried to hide.
Jiao Jin’s smile widened a bit, but it held a touch of mockery. What was this called? What goes around comes around?
Before, it was always her begging for Cui Yu’s affection. Now, it had turned into this woman gathering all her courage to say. I am not your girlfriend now, I have no right to control you, but I hope to have that status in the future.
Shaking her head, Jiao Jin seemed entirely indifferent, her voice cold. “Cui Yu, you’re talking about the past. The current me could never be with you.”
“Why is it impossible?”
She was clearly sad and hurting, yet in the next second, she was still trying her best to fight for it. Her eyes, which had finally lost their redness, were once again stained with the colors of sunset and tears. Cui Yu grabbed Jiao Jin’s wrist, despair in her eyes. “Is it because you like Alphas?”
The grip was a bit painful, showing how hard she was holding on. Jiao Jin looked at the woman who was like a bow pulled to its limit, seemingly about to snap. She nodded, becoming the archer who snapped the curved bow.
“Yes. Because I like Alphas.”
