- The Alpha Who Played Me Has Re-Differentiated Into a Delicate Omega
- Chapter 10 - What Preference?
“It shouldn’t be. I’ve dated Cui Yu before, and she and I weren’t a 100% match.”
Jiao Jin analyzed the possibility of Director Cui’s claim with cold logic. The two of them had crossed every line imaginable three years ago, and their pheromones had been acquainted for a long time. How could they only now discover they were an “Absolute Match”?
“But Xiao Yu underwent a secondary differentiation, and her pheromones changed because of it. Tell you what, expose your gland and let Pei Ning take a sample of your pheromones. We’ll run a match against Xiao Yu’s. If it really is an Absolute Match, then you can’t be blamed for what happened.”
In truth, Jiao Jin was curious and wanted to know why Cui Yu had suddenly fallen into a heat. She nodded and proactively peeled off the suppressant patch from the back of her neck.
A scent, a blend of light gardenia and the aroma of Lingnan lychee, spilled out instantly. Cui Peining felt her legs go weak the moment she caught a whiff. Her face flushed red, whether from anger or embarrassment. “Who told you to take it off so fast?! I haven’t even put on my mask yet!”
It should only be a trace amount, why is the Second Miss blushing too?
Knowing that this technically counted as acting like a rogue, Jiao Jin quickly reapplied the patch. Out of guilt for nearly causing Cui Yu an accident, she lowered her head and spoke sincerely, “My apologies.”
“What are you acting for now? You’re usually so fierce, what, you act like a good girl in front of your superior?”
Even though her face was red to the point that her voice sounded weak, Cui Peining continued to scold her aggressively. She turned her head away, unwilling to meet Jiao Jin’s rare, gentle gaze, but accidentally exposed her own bright red ears.
Jiao Jin smiled helplessly. So, simply being a bit nicer to her was “acting like a good girl”?
Jiao Jin shook her head. “Go put your mask on. I still have to move house today. I have a lot on my plate.”
“Hmph, you think you’re the only one with things to do? You’re the only busy person in the world, huh?”
It wasn’t even a back and forth between two people anymore, it was more like the second daughter’s one-sided display of tsundere and spoiled-miss behavior. Director Cui sighed, feeling that she really shouldn’t have pampered her children so much.
“Xiao Jiao, Peining, you two look after Xiao Yu for a moment. I need to go to the Bureau of Memory to notify them about the change in management.”
The Director had rushed here while on the road, and now that the cause was known and Cui Yu’s heat had stabilized, she had to hurry to the Bureau. She needed to inform the subordinates that the original manager was ill, and she had another very important task to attend to.
“Okay.”
As they spoke in unison, Cui Peining became displeased again. “Why are you copying me?”
Jiao Jin didn’t even want to acknowledge her. In the eyes of this Second Miss, even her breathing was probably a mistake. Jiao Jin bypassed her and headed toward Cui Yu’s ward, leaving behind a sharp cry of: “Hey! How dare you ignore me!”
After knocking, Jiao Jin heard a weak, soft “Enter.” Compared to Cui Peining’s racket, it was like “listening to immortal music that clears the ears.” Jiao Jin walked in with a heart full of guilt and saw a woman sitting obediently on the hospital bed with her legs crossed.
“A-Jin? Do I have a fever? My face feels so hot.”
The delicate, dainty voice paired with the innocent, dazed rubbing of her cheeks sent the “cuteness meter” off the charts. Jiao Jin stared blankly for a second before snapping back to reality. “Actually, it’s a heat. I’m sorry. Before I left today, I was worried you’d be scared without me, so I released a trace amount of pheromones in the room. I didn’t realize it would trigger your heat.”
“Is that so? You don’t need to apologize. Didn’t you do it for my own good?”
“But the result is you sitting in a hospital bed.”
Not wanting to see her looking so guilt-ridden and self-reproachful and honestly feeling warm just being cared for by this person. Cui Yu smiled and changed the subject. “By the way, from the biology I remember, a trace amount of pheromones isn’t supposed to trigger a heat.”
“According to General Cui, it seems to be because our pheromones are a 100% match, though I don’t know if that’s true.”
“Haven’t we… done it before? How could you not know if we’re a 100% match?”
Only then did Jiao Jin remember that Cui Yu didn’t know about her secondary differentiation. Seeing the woman turn even redder with shyness, Jiao Jin cleared her throat and explained, “No, when we were dating, you were an Alpha. I don’t know what you went through to undergo a secondary differentiation into an Omega, but it’s likely because of that. Your pheromones changed, and that’s why they became a 100% match with mine.”
Confused, Cui Yu furrowed her beautiful brows. “So, when I was dating you, I was an Alpha? Were we one of those rare Double Alpha couples?”
“Yes.”
“Eh… then, do you like Alphas?”
Jiao Jin keenly noticed a flash of loss and insecurity in the woman’s eyes. In reality, she didn’t have a particular preference for any gender, yet Jiao Jin nodded. “Yes, I like Alphas.”
“B-but, the current me… our pheromones are a 100% match. If you like Alphas, then I…”
The words “I am an Omega” didn’t make it out. Cui Yu lowered her head in distress, feeling as though she had lost at the starting line.
Deliberately misrepresenting her sexual orientation just to see this sad expression, perhaps it was a streak of malice at work. In the past, Jiao Jin was always the one who was flustered, panicked, and defeated, but now she could tease Cui Yu. Jiao Jin got the result she wanted, but she didn’t feel the joy she expected.
Why?
Could it be that she had already begun to pity this foolish, clingy, crybaby of a person?
Thinking about it from another angle, the current Cui Yu was simple, cute, frank, and sincere, and she cared about Jiao Jin more than anyone. Jiao Jin felt a pang of doubt, was it really right to hurt her like this?
The Cui Yu who had lost her memory hadn’t actually done anything wrong.
Jiao Jin sighed, but unwilling to take back her words and look indecisive, she checked the IV drip that was almost finished and pressed the call button for the nurse.
“A-Jin, do you… do you really only like Alphas? Is there no chance at all for other genders?”
Jiao Jin glanced at the woman, who looked pitiful, and her heart finally softened for a moment. She didn’t answer the question directly, only saying: “I told you before, but you don’t remember now. My nickname isn’t A-Jin (Ash). It’s A-Jin (Hibiscus), with the ‘wood’ radical.”
“Oh, so it’s A-Jin. That really does sound better than the other one.”
She was so easy to coax. Just knowing a nickname was enough to make her happy, feeling as though the distance between her and Jiao Jin had shortened once again. However, after the joy passed, she realized the question hadn’t been answered. Fearing that asking too much would make her seem petty, Cui Yu stared at the pure white quilt for a while, silently repeating the previous question three times in her head, attempting to engrave it into her deep memory so she could find the right time to ask it again later.
