The Aloof Little Puppy Is Super Obedient - Chapter 8
Chu Jingtian nodded as he listened to his parents. He was now fully committed to acting in their best interest. After graduating university, he had considered taking this path, but he had abandoned it for that man. Thinking back, sacrificing so much for such people was truly not worth it. He clenched his fists tightly.
Upon returning home, Chu Jingtian carried his suitcase upstairs. When he stepped into his room, he froze in shock, unable to find the words. The layout was exactly the same as the day he left to get married.
A nanny walked over to his side, a warm smile on her face. “Young Master, you’re back. While you were away, the Master and Madam meticulously maintained and cleaned this room. They wanted to ensure you had a comfortable place to stay whenever you decided to return.”
As she spoke, she tidied up some stray dust, her eyes beaming. “Goodnight, Young Master.” With that, she smiled and took her leave.
Looking at the room and reflecting on the nanny’s words, Chu Jingtian was deeply moved. It was a difficult feeling to put into words. In this house, he was his parents’ most cherished treasure; yet in another’s home, he had been the most despised burden.
He walked slowly into the room and noticed a photo frame on the desk. Tears welled in his eyes. It was a photo he had taken with his parents before his wedding. Back then, he had planned to take them traveling after graduation. Looking at the picture now, he felt only bitterness. It brought back memories of a past that felt so distant. So many years had passed, and while the people remained, the circumstances had changed entirely. He no longer felt like the person in that photo. He gripped his hands tight, remaining silent.
He sat down, looking at the familiar arrangement of his desk. He slowly began to accept and embrace this reality, allowing the warmth of home to wash over him.
“Zhou Nian, by being with me like this… won’t that old woman at your house say something?”
A young man lying nearby spoke with a smile, looking at Zhou Nian.
Zhou Nian let out a light laugh and relaxed. “Don’t worry. How could I ever let you down? Besides, I’ve long since severed any real connection with that old woman. Now that you mention him, I realize I’ve almost forgotten he exists…”
The young man smiled brightly at the response. Zhou Nian sighed contentedly and leaned in to kiss the man’s lips.
Heh. Zhou Nian felt a surge of triumph, thinking about how Chu Jingtian had failed to get the better of him.
The next morning, Chu Jingtian arrived at the company early.
Stepping into the office, a smile graced his face. He felt the vibrant energy of the workplace. It felt bitter to remember how he had once abandoned all of this for “love.” The past seemed so ridiculous now that he didn’t even know how to describe it. He never imagined things would turn out this way, but he swallowed his regrets and refused to dwell on them any longer.
He was back at his post. He was determined to master his role and fully restore his working life. With a smirk, he walked into his private office.
He had barely sat down for a few seconds when a knock sounded at the door. Chu Jingtian signaled for the person to enter. A man in a black suit walked in, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and a serious expression.
Seeing him, Chu Jingtian smiled. “Aren’t you usually very busy? How do you have time to visit my office today?” He spoke with a playful glint in his eyes.
The man was Zhang Yang, his best friend and roommate from university. Zhang Yang sat in the chair across from the desk, a smile on his face.
“What? I just wanted to see you. Are you saying I’m not welcome in your office?” Zhang Yang crossed his arms, looking at Chu Jingtian.
Underneath the smile, Zhang Yang felt a wave of relief and happiness. But he also felt a pang of heartache and bitterness for his friend. He had been frustrated beyond belief when Chu Jingtian abandoned everything for love. Now, seeing the determination on Chu Jingtian’s face as he returned to the company, Zhang Yang finally felt at ease. Seeing his friend back at work was the best thing he could ask for.
Chu Jingtian chuckled at Zhang Yang’s serious demeanor. “Why are you so concerned with my business all of a sudden?”
“I just care about you. Do you really want me to stop?” Zhang Yang looked at him with feigned offense. “Seriously though, I’m just joking. But really, what brought you back today?”
Zhang Yang walked over and squeezed Chu Jingtian’s shoulder. “Chu Jingtian, I’m telling you, I’m so glad you’re finally back. I spent so much time worrying if you were happy. I never expected you’d actually break up or rather, divorce that man.”
Zhang Yang sighed, the frustration of the past years surfacing briefly. He remembered when they were starting the business; Chu Jingtian was the most formidable person in the company. To see someone so strong give up their career for “love” had been a shock.
“I’m older now, and I’ve wised up,” Chu Jingtian said with a sigh. “We weren’t compatible, and I didn’t want to be obsessed with it anymore. Plus, after the things he did, how could I not leave him?”
He thought back to how he had been deceived by simple, hollow gestures much like being fooled by a bowl of plain porridge. He wouldn’t allow himself to be tricked by such trivial things again. He steadied his hands, clearing his mind of distractions.
Zhang Yang saw the resolve in his eyes and nodded. “As long as you’re serious about returning to work, I know you’ll conquer this market and stand firm!” He spoke with absolute confidence.
Even though Chu Jingtian had been away from the field for years, his previous achievements were legendary within the company. Once he reclaimed his position, there was no doubt he would excel. Zhang Yang remembered how hard Chu Jingtian used to work, often staying up late, and it had pained him to see that drive wasted. Now that Chu Jingtian was ready to inherit and lead, Zhang Yang felt much better.
“Seeing you take over makes me feel a lot more comfortable. You can’t let yourself be fooled by scumbags anymore!”
Zhang Yang still didn’t understand why Chu Jingtian had been so infatuated with Zhou Nian back then, often saying cringeworthy things like, “Baby is the love of my life…” or “I’ll give up everything for my baby!”
Thinking of those sappy lines, Zhang Yang cringed. Chu Jingtian turned red with embarrassment. “Alright, stop! Don’t bring up those ridiculous things. Remembering that is making me die of embarrassment..”
Seeing his friend so flustered, Zhang Yang laughed and patted his shoulder. “Fine, fine. I’m only bringing it up to remind you: you have to recognize people for who they really are. Sometimes, the person you see isn’t the person everyone else sees.”
