- Chapter 6 - Understanding Your Life, Caring For You
At this moment, Chu Jingtian felt as though a thousand words were trapped in his heart, yet he couldn’t utter a single one. Seeing his mother standing before him, the emotions swelled until they were overwhelming. He could no longer suppress his true feelings; he rushed forward and pulled her into a tight embrace, his tears falling uncontrollably.
Zhao Qingya looked at the son clinging to her and gently stroked his back, trying to soothe his turbulent emotions. As she comforted him, a soft, radiant smile spread across her face. For her, this moment was incredibly moving. After being away for so long, her child was finally willing to come home and be part of the family again. As a mother, she was deeply touched and struggled to find the right words.
“My child, as long as you are willing to come back, this home will always be your harbor.” Zhao Qingya spoke softly, her eyes full of warmth as she continued to stroke his hair.
Hearing his mother’s comfort, Chu Jingtian choked back a sob and hugged her even tighter. This was the most significant and moving moment of his life. He was finally home, able to face his mother and speak his heart. The realization made him tremble with excitement. In this silence, their shared bond expressed more than ten thousand words ever could.
Standing to the side, Su Jingyang watched the scene with a matching smile, his eyes fixed tenderly on Chu Jingtian’s face.
In the living room.
Zhao Qingya quickly poured a glass of warm water for Chu Jingtian, her face beaming.
“Child, so many things happened between you and him. Why didn’t you tell the family? If you had told us, we would have handled it for you long ago.”
Zhao Qingya’s voice was laced with helplessness. She didn’t know how else to lecture him. As they talked, she could see the lingering tears in his eyes, and her heart ached for him. Sometimes, children don’t listen to their parents and don’t understand the pain they might encounter, thinking only that their parents are trying to control them.
But parents often see people more clearly than their children do. They can discern a person’s true character. Someone like Zhou Nian had seemed narrow-minded and cold from the very first time he visited their home. Most importantly, back when Chu Jingtian first brought him over, Zhou Nian’s feelings for their family seemed indifferent at best.
Even then, they could tell Zhou Nian was an irresponsible man. Thinking about how Chu Jingtian had endured years of cold violence in that house felt like a knife to Zhao Qingya’s heart.
“You must remember that if anything happens in the future, you have to tell us. If you don’t speak up, how are we supposed to know what you’re going through?”
Zhao Qingya sighed, her heart heavy with the sight of her son’s grievances. How could a parent not suffer when their child suffers? Their child, who had grown up happily in their arms, had been handed over to someone else only to face such misery. This realization planted a seed of resolve in her heart.
Chu Jingtian listened to her words, finding comfort in her motherly concern.
“Mom, I’m truly sorry. I used to think there was no going back, that I couldn’t undo my choices.” His tears began to flow again.
To the old Chu Jingtian, this reunion had felt like an unreachable dream. Before, he hadn’t even dared to stand near Zhao Qingya, let alone touch her. Hearing this, Zhao Qingya frowned slightly and gave him a gentle, affectionate pat on the back.
“Don’t ever say that again. Now that you’ve divorced that scumbag, stay away from him. Don’t have anything to do with him ever again.”
Her eyes were full of heartache. Seeing her child so thin and weeping with such grievance made Zhao Qingya’s resolve harden. She wanted to soothe his pain and ensure he never encountered such a situation again.
As they were talking, the sound of the front door opening echoed through the house. They looked toward the entrance and saw Chu Jianhua returning home. At the sight of his father, Chu Jingtian lowered his head, unsure of how to speak or even look up. He felt a deep sense of shame and vulnerability. He knew it was his father; no one else would be coming home at this hour.
Sensing his father’s presence, memories of their past flooded back. As a child, Chu Jingtian would wait by the door for Chu Jianhua to return. He would always be so excited, throwing himself into his father’s arms and mumbling, “I want to stay with Daddy forever.”
Those days were gone, and they were both adults now. Sometimes Chu Jingtian wished he could turn back time and reverse his mistakes, but he knew what was done was done.
Chu Jianhua walked slowly toward his son and patted his back.
“So you finally know to come home. Do you have any idea how much your mother and I have worried about you all these years? Every New Year, we worried about you. We wanted to ask if you were warm enough, if you were hungry…”
Tears welled in Chu Jianhua’s eyes. These were tears of pure heartache for his child. He had known bits and pieces of what Chu Jingtian was going through from his sources at work. Thinking of the hardships his son had faced made Chu Jianhua feel a mix of frustration and sorrow.
Chu Jingtian felt his father’s pain and didn’t know how to face him. Chu Jianhua, seeing his son’s sorrow, let out a soft sigh and patted him again.
“Child, I’m not here to scold you. But in the future, even if you are with someone else, at least call home to let us know you’re safe.”
To Chu Jianhua, though people said a married son was like water splashed out, his child was a gift from heaven. Since Chu Jingtian was their only child, they were naturally terrified that he was being mistreated or oppressed by that family.
Chu Jianhua noticed how much weight his son had lost and reached out to pinch his cheek.
“You used to have so much life in your face; you’ve never been this thin.”
His voice was a mix of helplessness and lingering anger that quickly softened into concern. Chu Jingtian lowered his head, deeply moved and unable to speak. He realized that despite the years of silence, his father had always cared about his life. The tears fell once more.
“I’m sorry, Father. I was an unfilial son for not coming to see you for so many years.” Chu Jingtian wiped his eyes and stood up to face him.
He was now a head taller than Chu Jianhua. In the past, his father had seemed like a giant, someone immense and unreachable. Now, looking at the man before him, Chu Jingtian smiled through his tears and pulled his father into a hug.
Once, Chu Jianhua was the big tree providing shade; now, the son had become a towering tree that could support the aging one. Seeing the white in his father’s hair, Chu Jingtian’s tears dripped onto his father’s shoulder. Chu Jianhua felt his son’s distress and gently patted him until his emotions stabilized. He continued to comfort him, ensuring Chu Jingtian felt the warmth and security of being home.
