The Aloof Little Puppy Is Super Obedient - Chapter 36
Inside a dim room.
Zhou Nian sat on the sofa, holding a wine glass and staring at the liquid inside with a look of disbelief. Ice cubes floated on the surface.
“I say, Big Brother, why did you call me out so suddenly today? If something is up, just say it. Why drag me all the way over here?”
The man who walked in spoke with a hint of dissatisfaction. He slowly approached Zhou Nian and sat down beside him.
“I called you because I need to ask you something,” Zhou Nian’s voice was icy.
The man sitting next to him looked at him in shock. He never expected Zhou Nian to have a serious reason for seeking him out.
“Wow, I really didn’t think you’d still have things to ask me. Fine, speak up. What is it?”
This man was Gu Nanfeng, Zhou Nian’s close friend.
Zhou Nian took a sip of his wine and asked tentatively, “Would you say… that during the time Chu Jingtian was with me, he lived a miserable life?”
Zhou Nian was genuinely confused now. He didn’t know how to make sense of the past. He asked the question because he honestly didn’t know how to judge his own actions over those years; he needed someone else’s perspective to reach a conclusion.
Gu Nanfeng stared at him, unable to believe that Zhou Nian was asking something so obvious.
“I never imagined you’d ask such a simple question. Since you’re asking, I can give you a very accurate answer about how you treated the person you discarded.” Gu Nanfeng’s expression turned serious.
He remembered when Zhou Nian and Chu Jingtian got divorced; he had been stunned. He never thought it would actually happen because Chu Jingtian had loved Zhou Nian for so many years. No one expected Chu Jingtian to be the one to let go.
“You really don’t know, do you? You probably thought your feelings were one way, but do you know what you were actually like to him?” Gu Nanfeng continued. “Do you have any idea how much Chu Jingtian did for you during those years? And in return, you were always cold and indifferent to everything he offered.”
Gu Nanfeng went on to recount a long list of grievances.
Listening to him, Zhou Nian felt a sense of bewilderment. He hadn’t realized how many things Gu Nanfeng had observed. His mind became a blur, and he didn’t know how to stabilize his rising emotions.
The years had passed so quickly. He had never truly considered how Chu Jingtian had spent them. Now, hearing an outsider describe it, the memories of how Chu Jingtian lived in his house began to resurface.
Chu Jingtian had been deeply unhappy. He had never been able to relax, not even once. The most vivid memory was of Chu Jingtian always wanting him to stay home, but Zhou Nian would always go out to party, wanting nothing to do with him.
There was never a kiss, never a touch. At the time, he thought Chu Jingtian was a joke; he had only married him for the benefits he thought Chu Jingtian’s background would bring. But after the wedding, when those benefits didn’t materialize, he grew to loathe Chu Jingtian and avoided any contact with him.
Thinking of this now, he felt a strange sense of guilt creeping into his heart. He didn’t know how to express it. It was a suffocating feeling, a heavy weight he didn’t know how to steady. These memories had been suppressed in his mind for so long—sealed away because he didn’t want to face the reality of his own behavior.
Even though these were things he had done himself, recalling them was agonizing. Realizing how poorly he had treated Chu Jingtian, he felt a profound sense of remorse. He desperately wished he could go back and change things.
“So… you’re saying I was a complete bastard? I was that terrible to him?”
“If you want to go there, I could talk for miles,” Gu Nanfeng replied. “You were beyond awful to him. I don’t even know how you did it. And now that you’re divorced, you start regretting it? Why didn’t you care when you were actually together?”
Gu Nanfeng looked at him with confusion. He couldn’t understand Zhou Nian’s logic—ignoring the relationship while he had it, only to mourn it once it was gone.
Zhou Nian listened, remembering how he had treated Chu Jingtian and the look of utter disappointment on Chu Jingtian’s face during the divorce. Actually, it wasn’t just disappointment; Chu Jingtian had looked relieved.
The realization made him clench his fists. It was a bitter pill to swallow. He took a deep breath, trying to push the thoughts away, but the memories were too painful to ignore. Tears began to well in his eyes.
“So I really was that bad to him… No wonder he doesn’t want to see me. No wonder he wants to run the moment he spots me…”
He remembered trying to talk to Chu Jingtian earlier, but Chu Jingtian wouldn’t even give him the time of day. The thought made his tears flow uncontrollably. The memories were now sharp and vivid, a painful existence he didn’t know how to manage.
He was finally seeing how despicable he had been. He was filled with a regret so deep he didn’t know how to face the world. Everything felt like a cruel joke. He tried to swallow his grief and turn his emotions into a motivation to move forward, telling himself not to overthink it.
He wondered why he felt nothing when they were together, yet felt such agonizing pain now that they were apart. Was he truly in the wrong? He had tried so hard to stay in control, but the pain was winning.
He sighed, pushing the feelings down and trying to find some form of emotional solace just to make himself feel better. He needed to stop this spiral of fear and anxiety. He finally understood that he wasn’t as composed as he used to be. Initially, he had been terrified, but now he was beginning to grasp the full extent of his loss.
Elsewhere, Chu Jingtian was having dinner with Su Jingyang. Suddenly, he sneezed.
He looked around, confused. It was the middle of summer, why would he suddenly sneeze? He shook off the feeling and stabilized his mood. It was nothing major, and he certainly wasn’t going to let any stray thoughts about his past mess with his head.
The most important thing was to not let those messy, old emotions ruin his current happiness.
