- Chapter 19 - Youthful Memories, So, That Is How It Was?
As Su Jingyang watched Chu Jingtian sitting there working so hard, a smile spread across his face. It made him genuinely happy just to stay by his brother’s side and watch him focus.
During his years abroad, he had missed Chu Jingtian constantly but had no way to see him. Now that he could finally look at him openly, it felt like a momentous occasion.
After finishing a large batch of tasks, Chu Jingtian noticed Su Jingyang staring at him. He looked back with confusion. “What is it? Are you hungry? If you are, should we head out for a midnight snack?”
Chu Jingtian was puzzled, not quite understanding why Su Jingyang was looking at him with such an unreadable expression.
Thinking about how Chu Jingtian had been too busy to eat properly, Su Jingyang nodded. They headed out together to find some food. They found a quiet corner in a snack street near their luxury housing complex.
Sitting down, Chu Jingtian looked at the familiar surroundings and smiled happily at Su Jingyang. “Do you remember this place? Back when you were in junior high, I used to bring you here for late-night snacks all the time.”
He smiled at the memory. Back then, they would sneak out to eat because once they finished dinner at home, they weren’t allowed to eat anymore.
Su Jingyang nodded, looking at Chu Jingtian with delight. “Haha, that’s right! Back in high school, we used to sit here eating barbecue and talking about life.”
Back in junior high, “life” mostly meant complaining about things happening at home. Chu Jingtian remembered how lively and active Su Jingyang used to be, and he couldn’t help but sigh softly at the memory.
Looking at the grown man Su Jingyang had become, Chu Jingtian smiled. Although Su Jingyang no longer had the innocence of a child, he would always be a younger brother to Chu Jingtian, holding a special place in his heart.
“You haven’t been here in so long! I was wondering when you two would come back for some barbecue. It feels like it has been years,” the stall owner remarked. She was a middle-aged woman who still recognized them.
Chu Jingtian looked at her in disbelief. “I can’t believe you still recognize us, Auntie. I thought you would have forgotten us by now.”
“Of course I remember you! Your faces haven’t changed much, and you used to love eating here. How could I forget you two brothers?”
“I still remember how you used to fight over a single egg. You were so cute back then. I’m glad to see you two still have such a great relationship!”
The woman laughed as she quickly brought over their dishes, adding a few extra items on the house. She seemed as if she hadn’t aged at all over the years.
Seeing that she hadn’t changed much either, both men smiled and greeted her warmly. Sometimes, youthful memories are found in these small details. Things they didn’t think much of at the time had become beautiful memories.
Coming to this shop always made them feel the auntie’s warmth. When they were younger, they rarely saw their parents because they were always working. Thinking about how busy his parents used to be, Chu Jingtian sighed softly and continued chatting with the owner.
Relieved to see that business was still as good as ever, the two slowly began discussing their current lives. After saying goodbye to the owner, they walked home along a quiet path, laughing as they went. This was a rare moment for them to be alone together.
“I can’t believe our youth ended so quickly. Time really flies. I still remember you fighting me for that egg, saying you needed it because you were still growing.”
During their youth, they had spent their time bickering and dreaming about the future. Comparing those dreams to their current reality felt like a stark contrast. Like many people, they had been full of dreams when young, only to find that growing up was very different from what they had imagined.
“Yeah, brother,” Su Jingyang said, turning to look at Chu Jingtian with a smile. For him, spending time like this was pure happiness. These quiet moments made him realize how comfortable their relationship still was.
They had forgotten the pain of their past separation. It felt as if they had returned to the old days, walking down this path together, moving from school uniforms to business suits.
They had been through so much. They used to think they would never be apart, yet life had been defined by their separations. As children, they didn’t understand why their parents always worked overtime. Now that they were the same age their parents had been, they understood that while they wanted to spend time together, life was often too rushed.
“Well, we’re back at the door. Go home and get some rest. Thanks for today,” Chu Jingtian said.
Watching Su Jingyang walk toward his house, Chu Jingtian smiled. He was reminded of the days in high school when he would pick up his younger brother after class. His brother was no longer that shy little boy who would sweetly call him “brother.”
As Chu Jingtian was lost in thought, Su Jingyang turned back and smiled. “Goodbye, Brother!”
Chu Jingtian paused for a moment, then waved back. Time was passing so quickly. He felt a bit sentimental realizing how fast the years had gone by.
Instead of dwelling on messy thoughts, Chu Jingtian headed inside. The time spent with Su Jingyang had brought back beautiful memories, helping him forget the bad ones. Even if life had its rough patches, how could he not be happy when remembering such sweet moments?
When Su Jingyang walked into his house, he was surprised to see the lights still on. A couple walked out to meet him.
Su Jingyang looked at them sternly. “Mom, Dad, you’re at an age where you should be sleeping. What are you going to do about work tomorrow if you don’t rest?”
“Listen to this brat! Now you’re telling your parents to rest? You didn’t even greet us properly. I guess when sons grow up, they aren’t as sweet as daughters,” his father joked.
Su Jingyang looked at them, feeling a bit stressed. “Mom, Dad, weren’t you supposed to be on vacation? Why are you back here?”
“Can’t your mother and I come back from vacation whenever we want? You’re so eager for us to leave. Are you dating someone? Are you too embarrassed to tell us? Is it that person you liked when you were little?”
“What are you talking about? Go get some rest. I’m going to sleep too,” Su Jingyang interrupted, quickly running to his room.
His father, Su Qiannian, watched him bolt away in disbelief. “Wife, look at him run! Do you think he’s in love? He looks exactly like I did when my mother used to question me.”
“What are you overthinking for? Your son is an adult now. Even if he is in love, it’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
Standing next to Su Qiannian was Su Jingyang’s mother, Luo Susu. She sighed as she watched her son leave. “He really is an adult now, no longer a child. He grew up so fast. Everyone else already has grandchildren, and here I am, still a lonely mother. When will I have a grandchild?”
“Wife, don’t worry about grandchildren yet. Why don’t we have a daughter? You’re still young and beautiful,” Su Qiannian suggested.
Before he could finish, Luo Susu kicked him. “You old man! You’re really trying this with me now? I told you after our son was born that I didn’t want any more. And now you say this?”
Afraid his wife would keep scolding him, Su Qiannian quickly massaged her shoulders. “Wife, I’m sorry, I was wrong. I won’t say it again. Let’s go to bed; we have a flight tomorrow.”
Luo Susu looked at his fearful expression and decided not to argue further.
