- Chapter 75.1 - Breaking Up
At that critical moment, everyone was too overwhelmed with their own survival to pay attention to others, let alone a grown guy like Gao Tian.
But now, this same guy was accusing them of not saving him, even claiming that his capture was their fault because they hadn’t let the little zombie grab him first. Such an absurd conclusion was enough to shatter everyone’s worldview.
Tang Jing wasn’t interested in their internal disputes. She pulled the senpai and Zhou Tiantian aside, waiting for Chen Chang to resolve the matter.
While waiting, she carefully examined the little zombie on the ground.
At first glance, this zombie seemed no different from the ordinary ones. But upon closer inspection, she noticed its pupils were white with a faint hint of pink. This discovery startled her.
It reminded her of this world’s zombie classification system.
Zombies were categorized by the color of their pupils: white for ordinary, pink for primary-level, blue for intermediate, and red for advanced. As for the Zombie Emperor, their pupils would turn black, just like humans.
The virus had only broken out two days ago had zombies already started evolving?
Tang Jing frowned, a sense of unease creeping over her.
“Hah.”
Unable to figure it out for now, Tang Jing decided to take things one step at a time. But when she looked up, she saw the senpai happily rolling the little zombie around with her foot, while the zombie itself lay there with its eyes closed and mouth open, seemingly enjoying it.
Tang Jing: “…”
Zhou Tiantian, terrified, sidled up to Tang Jing, cautiously eyeing the bizarre scene.
Chen Chang, who had just finished discussing the matter with the others, walked over and saw the same sight. His eyelid twitched uncontrollably, what kind of heartwarming scene was this?!
“Brother Chen,” Tang Jing greeted him.
Chen Chang gave an awkward smile. “We’ve come to a decision. If Gao Tian shows no signs of turning by tomorrow, we’ll continue bringing him along. But if he does,” He glanced at Xu Yushu, leaving the implication unspoken. “We’ll have to tie him up here to make sure he doesn’t attack anyone.”
“Mm.” Whatever conclusion they reached didn’t affect Tang Jing. All she needed was for them to stick to the agreed departure time.
This was a temporary team, after all. The best outcome was for everyone to stay out of each other’s way.
Gao Tian was now tied up with ropes. Whatever Chen Chang and the others had said to him must have worked, because the previously arrogant guy was now sitting quietly in place.
“We’ll go rest over there,” Tang Jing said, standing up.
Chen Chang quickly added, “Lou Jing, why don’t you stay here instead?”
If another emergency arose, they could still lend a hand especially the senpai in their group, who had proven incredibly useful.
If Gao Tian really did turn into a zombie tomorrow, Chen Chang had half a mind to bring him along as an early warning system. But considering how unhinged Gao Tian was while still human, who knew how much worse he’d be as a zombie?
With the matter settled, everyone relaxed and found spots to rest.
In the end, Tang Jing didn’t stay. She took the senpai and Zhou Tiantian back to their original spot, along with the little zombie, of course.
Zhou Tiantian couldn’t understand why Ajing insisted on keeping the little zombie. “Ajing, why don’t we just kill the little zombie? He’s too dangerous like this.”
The rustling of insects came from the grass nest, and the surroundings were eerily silent. If it weren’t for the two zombies nearby, one might have thought everything that had happened over the past two days was just an illusion.
“No need,” Tang Jing said, holding the little zombie as she pushed open the courtyard gate and stepped inside.
“But…” Zhou Tiantian wanted to argue further, but the pitch-black night behind her frightened her into quickly following. Watching Ajing silently tie the senior to a chair and place the little zombie on the table, she pursed her lips and closed the door behind her.
“Let’s sleep,” Tang Jing said.
Zhou Tiantian plopped onto a stool, fuming. “Why are you always like this? You never listen to me. Fine, you can bring the senior along, but now you want to keep this little zombie too? How are we supposed to travel like this?”
Tang Jing had just lain down on the chair but sat up again upon hearing this, fixing her gaze on Zhou Tiantian. “So, what do you want to do?”
Zhou Tiantian had always been somewhat intimidated by Lou Jing. Initially, she had pursued her because Lou Jing was beautiful, talented, and had many admirers, she just wanted to join the crowd.
When she finally won Lou Jing over, she basked in the envious glances from others, relishing the attention for a long time. But after they got together, she gradually found Lou Jing boring. All Lou Jing did was study, and even when they went out for meals or movies, it lacked the romance other couples had. Several times, their outings ended in arguments.
It made her want to break up more than once, but Lou Jing’s dazzling reputation made her reluctant to let go, so she dragged things out until now.
“Fine, you can keep the senior, but if you insist on bringing this little zombie too, then we’re breaking up,” Zhou Tiantian blurted out the word “breakup” casually she had said it several times before.
Tang Jing stared at her. Just as Zhou Tiantian expected her to start coaxing her, Tang Jing replied firmly, “Fine.”
“You!” Zhou Tiantian hadn’t expected her to agree. Anger and hurt welled up inside her, her eyes reddening as tears began to fall. “Lou Jing, you don’t love me at all.”
Tang Jing lowered her eyelids, her tone indifferent. “Yeah.”
“You’re always like this. Other people treat their girlfriends so well spoiling them, pampering them. But with you, I have to chase after you and beg for attention. Why should I?” Zhou Tiantian wiped her tears, but they only flowed harder.
“I get it. The senior turned into a zombie because she saved me, so it makes sense to bring her along. But what about this little zombie? He’s so vicious. Isn’t he just dead weight?” Zhou Tiantian sobbed as she spoke. “You can’t just play the hero like this.”
“If you’re not happy, you can join Chen Chang’s team,” Tang Jing lifted her eyes to look at her again, her expression grave and exhaustion evident in her gaze.
She was tired of this. Giving in once or twice hadn’t solved anything maybe it was better to part ways.
Seeing that Tang Jing was serious about breaking up, Zhou Tiantian panicked. A few days ago, she might have been willing to split up, she could always find someone else. But now, in the apocalypse, death lurked around every corner.
She knew Lou Jing was responsible and righteous. No matter what, Lou Jing would protect her life. But if she really joined Chen Chang’s team, she’d end up like Gao Tian.
“No, I won’t go.” Afraid the other party might actually make her go, Zhou Tiantian quickly added, ” I was just joking earlier.” Feeling somewhat guilty, she buried her face in her arms on the table, trying to avoid the topic.
“Zhou Tiantian, I can safely escort you to the shelter, but let’s not be friends anymore.” Tang Jing didn’t let the matter drop. Some things were better addressed openly.
[System: Host has forcibly altered the romantic relationship with Zhou Tiantian. Deducting 20 points. Remaining balance: 380 points.]
The benefits Senior Shi had secured for her were finally coming into play.
Unlike in the previous two worlds, where she had to rigidly follow the original plot without any deviations, Tang Jing no longer had to endure such constraints. If she could end the romantic relationship with Zhou Tiantian, she could feel less guilty about getting closer to Senior Shi’s character, Xu Yushu.
“You’re really breaking up with me?” Zhou Tiantian glared at her.
Tang Jing didn’t want to waste words on this, but some things needed to be clarified to avoid future complications.
“You just asked if I ever loved you. Now I’ll ask you the same, did you ever love me?” Tang Jing countered.
“I…” Zhou Tiantian faltered, momentarily speechless.
Tang Jing pressed on, “When you repeatedly cornered me to confess your feelings, what did I say?”
Zhou Tiantian couldn’t help but recall the day they officially got together.
Lou Jing had just stepped out of the lab when Zhou Tiantian, who had been waiting for a long time, intercepted her. Looking up with sparkling eyes and an earnest expression, Zhou Tiantian confessed for the fifth time. After hesitating for a while, Lou Jing finally sighed and said, “We can give it a try.”
Those words resurfaced in Zhou Tiantian’s mind. She pursed her lips and lowered her gaze without responding.
“I took this relationship seriously, but you didn’t,” Tang Jing paused before continuing, “Of course, it’s also because I’m not the kind of partner you wanted someone who’d give you romance, spend time shopping for clothes with you, or sweet-talk you.”
Zhou Tiantian panicked. “You, you knew? How did you know?” She was certain she’d never mentioned it.
Tang Jing looked at her. “Because every time before you threw a tantrum, you’d stare at other couples.” Once or twice might have gone unnoticed, but by the third or fourth time, even the most oblivious person would catch on.
“I…” Zhou Tiantian had nothing left to say. She’d forgotten Tang Jing was a top student. How could she not notice?
“Then why didn’t you say anything?” This was what Zhou Tiantian couldn’t understand. Every time she lost her temper and stormed off, she’d return after a few days, and they’d resume their relationship as if nothing had happened. She used to think sweetly that Tang Jing had forgiven her, but now it seemed that wasn’t the case.
“It’s normal for a girlfriend to have minor tantrums,” Tang Jing said. “Besides, pointing it out wouldn’t have changed anything.”
“But now.”
“I’ll be taking Senior Shi and this little zombie with me. And since you don’t truly love me either, maintaining this relationship is pointless.”
The next day, Chen Chang noticed the tension between them. He wanted to ask but hesitated, finally settling his gaze on the small zombie Tang Jing was carrying. Surprised, he asked, “You’re bringing it along?”
“Mm,” Tang Jing replied without further explanation.
The reason she had kept this little zombie with her was to observe how it leveled up. If she could figure out the trick, she planned to apply it to her senior. That way, once her senior’s level increased, she might regain her consciousness and it would be even better if she could retain her human memories.
“Oh, alright.” Since she was the one bringing it along, Chen Chang didn’t have much to say.
Not seeing Gao Tian in their group, Tang Jing guessed he hadn’t been spared either, likely left behind by Chen Chang and the others.
The group set off again.
Days of thick fog made their journey difficult traveling by day and finding shelter in abandoned houses at night.
By the sixth day, they reached the highway, spotting a flickering red signal in the distance, a beacon from the refuge.
Today, the fog had thinned slightly, improving visibility to about five meters, which was good news for them.
