- Chapter 74.1 - The Little Zombie Strikes [First Update]
They hadn’t gone far when Xu Yushu let out a low growl. Tang Jing quickly called out, “Wait.”
“What’s wrong?” Chen Chang came over and asked.
Tang Jing glanced around. At some point, the fog had thickened even more now, visibility was reduced to just two meters. “There are zombies in the fog.”
Chen Chang froze. “How do you know?” His eyes lit up when he noticed Xu Yushu growling in a specific direction. “She can sense them?”
“Yeah.”
Chen Chang hadn’t expected that bringing a zombie along would have such an advantage. He immediately signaled the others to stay alert.
Soon, growls echoed through the dense fog, followed by the sound of rushing footsteps.
Thanks to their early warning, the group handled the situation methodically and quickly dealt with the zombies.
Chen Chang remarked, “Now I finally understand how you managed to travel so far alone with just the two of them.” As long as one stayed calm and courageous enough, having a weapon was all it took to handle zombies.
The group also noticed that the fog around them was growing denser. Traveling under these conditions wasn’t ideal, especially without vehicles. Even if they had transportation, unfamiliarity with the roads made driving risky, who knew if they’d accidentally drive into a ditch?
Soon, they arrived at a gas station where several vehicles were parked. This was good news, but the bad news was that there were also over a dozen zombies gas station attendants, the shop owner, drivers, and passengers who had come to refuel. None of them had survived the outbreak.
After clearing out the zombies, they entered the convenience store.
With supplies running low, everyone began scavenging for resources.
Tang Jing took Xu Yushu to a corner to rest.
Zhou Tiantian stood at a distance not too far, not too close. Although there were other women in the group, and it might have been better to stick with them, she knew that staying close to A-Jing was the safer choice. She couldn’t be sure if those people would save her in a crisis, but A-Jing definitely would.
Even though A-Jing could be fierce, Zhou Tiantian was well aware of how much she cared for her.
Once they had gathered enough supplies, the group didn’t linger. They prepared to move on.
After this small resupply, everyone had upgraded their weapons, which now posed a significant threat to the zombies.
Thanks to Xu Yushu’s early warnings, their journey proceeded relatively smoothly. As dusk fell, they stopped traveling and took shelter in a nearby house.
The door of the house was wide open, the floor inside stained with blood. The owner lay in a pool of blood, their stomach torn open by sharp claws, intestines spilling out.
The gruesome scene made Tang Jing and the others retch the moment they stepped inside.
“They died recently,” Chen Chang said grimly, noting the color of the blood and the body’s temperature.
This unsettled him because they hadn’t encountered any other zombies along the way. If the person had just died, the zombie responsible should still be nearby yet they saw no sign of it.
They were exposed, while the zombie lurked in the shadows. The feeling of being at a disadvantage was deeply uncomfortable.
“Let’s deal with this body first,” Chen Chang said.
“Who’s going to handle it?” someone in the group asked.
To prevent Xu Yushu from being agitated by the scent of blood, Tang Jing didn’t enter the house immediately. Instead, she stood guard at the door, waiting for the cleanup to finish before going inside.
To her surprise, someone inside actually called her in to clean up the corpse.
The person said with righteous indignation, “You’ve been staying with that zombie all this time, you must already stink. Might as well be you who cleans it up.”
Chen Chang frowned and said, “Gao Tian!”
Gao Tian was part of Chen Chang’s team, and Tang Jing naturally had no obligation to discipline someone else’s subordinate. She tugged at the rope around her waist and said, “We’ll go to another room and set off together tomorrow morning.” With that, she decisively turned and left.
Xu Yushu seemed to sense that Tang Jing had been wronged. Her cold, pale eyes fixed on Gao Tian with a glare, and a low growl rumbled in her throat.
“Ah Jing,” Zhou Tiantian hesitated for a moment before following Tang Jing’s footsteps.
After Tang Jing and the others left, Chen Chang said, “Gao Tian, if you keep acting so unreasonably, we’ll go our separate ways.”
“Chen Chang!” Gao Tian looked at him in disbelief.
After all, the two of them were good friends from the same dorm. How could Gao Tian accept that his own buddy would abandon him for an outsider?
“These aren’t ordinary times,” Chen Chang said gravely.
The others in the room fell silent. Eventually, three of them stepped forward on their own and threw the corpse outside into the pond.
On the way over, Tang Jing had noticed a small courtyard not far away, its front yard overgrown with weeds clearly uninhabited for a long time.
Zhou Tiantian trailed hesitantly beside her, occasionally glancing back toward where Chen Chang and the others were staying. She asked in a hushed voice, “Ah Jing, is this really okay? Won’t it be dangerous?”
Tang Jing replied, “This way is safer.”
In this apocalyptic world, human hearts were the hardest to predict. Stab wounds in the back were common sometimes even from those you trusted and loved the most.
“Oh.” Zhou Tiantian still didn’t quite understand, but she didn’t press further.
As they pushed open the courtyard gate, something seemed to dart swiftly over the wall. Xu Yushu, following behind Tang Jing, let out a threatening growl toward the right side of the courtyard wall.
“What was that?!” Zhou Tiantian grabbed Tang Jing’s arm in fright.
A breeze swept past, leaving the surroundings eerily quiet. If not for Xu Yushu still vigilantly watching that spot, Tang Jing might have thought it was all just her imagination.
That speed wasn’t normal for a zombie especially not in the early stages of the virus. How could such a formidable zombie already exist? And judging by the vague outline, it wasn’t very large.
Her first thought was of the corpse with its belly torn open earlier. The body had just cooled, and there had been no trace of zombies nearby except for this one.
Perhaps the zombie was afraid of Xu Yushu, as it made no further moves.
The two sides stood at a stalemate, neither making a move.
Finally, the hidden zombie seemed to realize it wouldn’t gain anything here and turned to flee.
Tang Jing only caught a glimpse of a blurry shadow, the fog was still thick, making it impossible to see where the zombie had gone.
Sensing the danger had passed, Xu Yushu leaned against Tang Jing, nuzzling her head against her shoulder. Though her expression remained blank, Tang Jing couldn’t help but feel she was seeking praise.
She smiled and praised, “Well done, Senior.”
Zhou Tiantian blinked in confusion, unsure what was happening.
With the threat gone, the three of them entered the courtyard, pushing aside the waist-high weeds until they reached the house. The door was locked with a rusted padlock, weathered by time.
In this apocalyptic world, trespassing was the least of their worries, survival came first.
The room was covered in dust but remained tidy.
“Let’s rest here for the night,” Tang Jing said.
The three of them didn’t go into the inner rooms, instead settling in the main hall and finding stools to sit on.
Tang Jing untied the rope around her waist and secured her senior sister in a chair, then stretched her own back.
Before she could finish stretching, Xu Yushu on the chair let out a sound, “Hah.”
Tang Jing immediately tensed, grabbing the firewood chopper from the table and following the direction of the noise. She realized it was coming from where Chen Chang and the others were.
Zhou Tiantian jumped up from her stool in fright and rushed over. “What’s wrong, A-Jing? Did Senior Sister notice something?”
Tang Jing pressed her lips together. “If nothing’s gone wrong, that zombie just went over to their side.”
Seeing that the zombie hadn’t come their way, Zhou Tiantian relaxed slightly, though her heart remained uneasy. Then she thought, They deserve it. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be here in the first place.
Thankfully, Senior Sister was with them otherwise, A-Jing would have had a hard time dealing with that zombie alone.
