- Chapter 55 - The Wedding Night
Wu Xingyue stood by the door for a long time, gazing at her master seated by the bed. For a fleeting moment, she felt as though she were still dreaming.
She had truly abducted her master, and today was their wedding day.
“Lord Lingyu, are you growing impatient?”
Tang Jing remained silent.
Wu Xingyue hadn’t expected a response anyway. After all, having been master and disciple for so many years, she knew exactly what kind of person her master was.
She walked over, bent down, and looked at her. Though the veil obscured her view, the mere thought that her master would belong to her tonight filled Wu Xingyue with satisfaction.
“Lord Lingyu,” Wu Xingyue teased, her tone playful.
Tang Jing shifted slightly, causing the veil to sway. A composed voice came from beneath it. “What is it?”
Wu Xingyue’s smile deepened. With a light laugh, she asked, “Do you resent marrying me, Lord Lingyu?”
Tang Jing said nothing.
Wu Xingyue continued, “But I am very pleased.” She straightened up, walked to the table, poured herself a cup of wine, and downed it in one gulp. Her eyes, brimming with amusement, turned toward the figure by the bed. “I’ve admired Lord Lingyu for so long, yearning day and night. If not for the inaccessibility of Xianyu Mountain, I would have snatched you away long ago.”
Tang Jing looked at her through the veil. “So, the incident at the estate was your doing?”
“Indeed,” Wu Xingyue replied with a smile. “To be honest, I was afraid Sect Leader Bu would send someone else. That would have been disappointing. But fortunately, it was you, the one I most wished to see.”
Tang Jing’s hands, resting on her knees, clenched tightly.
Knock, knock. The door creaked open, and a servant’s voice came from outside. “Elder Qiu Yue, the hour has arrived.”
“Come in.”
The door swung open, and several maids entered, standing respectfully by the entrance.
“You two, escort Lord Lingyu out,” Wu Xingyue commanded with a slight tilt of her chin.
“Yes.”
Every ritual of the wedding ceremony had to be observed.
In the quiet of Nanchun Estate, the jubilant sound of suona horns suddenly filled the air. Red double-happiness characters adorned the doors and windows, and the halls were festooned with lanterns and decorations, creating a lively atmosphere.
“First bow to heaven and earth!” the wedding officiant’s voice rang out.
“Second bow to the ancestors!”
Tang Jing, her acupoints sealed, couldn’t move on her own and had to rely on the maids to press her into bowing.
“Bow to each other as husband and wife!”
“The ceremony is complete! Escort the couple to the bridal chamber!”
Wu Xingyue didn’t linger to drink with her subordinates. Instead, she took Tang Jing’s hand and led her step by step toward their new chamber.
The bridal chamber was lavishly decorated red candles, red wine cups, everything in auspicious crimson.
Wu Xingyue guided her to the table, pressing her shoulders to make her sit. Then, lifting the hem of her robe, she settled beside her and picked up the wine jug, filling both cups to the brim.
“My bride, the union wine,” Wu Xingyue said, offering her a cup. Only then did she realize, seeing the red veil still covering Tang Jing’s face, that in her nervousness, she had forgotten to remove it first.
She set the cup down and leaned forward to lift the veil, but then remembered the matchmaker’s reminder, it had to be done with a jade ruyi scepter.
Flustered, she glanced around the room and finally spotted the prepared jade ruyi on the bedside table. She stood up to fetch it.
Tang Jing did not miss a single one of her movements. Just the thought that this person was her revered senior made the corners of her mouth curl up uncontrollably. When she noticed the other approaching, she quickly composed herself.
As the jade ruyi slowly lifted the bridal veil, Tang Jing’s face was revealed.
Her master usually dressed in plain colors, exuding an air of aloofness and detachment. This was the first time she had seen her master wearing such vibrant attire, and for a moment, she was utterly captivated.
As the candlelight flickered, she suddenly snapped out of her daze. After sitting down, she raised her cup again and offered it, saying with a smile, “My dear wife.”
Tang Jing did not take it.
Wu Xingyue continued to hold the cup out, but gradually, the smile faded from her face. Her fingers tightened around the wine cup as she sneered, “Could it be that my dear wife wishes to back out now?”
Tang Jing lowered her eyelids, sitting upright and unmoved by the other’s sarcasm.
Wu Xingyue forcibly placed the cup into her hand and raised her own, compelling her to drink the ceremonial wine. Her gaze was filled with anguish as she watched Tang Jing.
After finishing the wine, Wu Xingyue crushed the cup in her fury.
Tang Jing, however, placed the festive little cup on the table, still keeping her eyes downcast, as if unwilling to spare her another glance.
The more Tang Jing acted this way, the more Wu Xingyue was determined to force her to look at her.
“We’ve already performed the wedding ceremony and drunk the nuptial wine. It’s too late for the esteemed Lingyu Master to back out now,” Wu Xingyue said before bending down to pick her up and carry her toward the bridal bed.
“You!” Tang Jing, who had remained composed until now, looked at her with shock and anger.
This was the first time since the ceremony that Wu Xingyue had seen such vivid emotions on her master’s face, and it filled her with delight. “My dear wife, the spring night is worth a thousand pieces of gold,” she said, placing her on the bed. With a wave of her hand, the curtains fell, concealing their figures.
Tang Jing propped herself up on her arms, retreating as Wu Xingyue approached, her face flushed. “You!”
“My dear wife, are you afraid?” Wu Xingyue stared at her unblinkingly. This lively version of her master was something she hadn’t seen in a long time. Trembling all over, her eyes were filled with a morbid obsession.
Seeing her like a madwoman, Tang Jing pressed her lips together tightly, though deep down, she was secretly anticipating what was to come.
