- Chapter 54 - Forced Marriage
Wu Xingyue clapped her hands twice toward the forest, and the quiet woods instantly rustled with movement.
“What are you trying to do?” Wen Mingyu shouted.
Wu Xingyue chuckled lightly. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
Tang Jing extended her arm, shielding Wen Mingyu behind her. Then, numerous members of the Nine Palaces Sect emerged from the dense forestat least twenty or thirty of them.
Her lips pressed tightly together, her eyes filled with vigilance. From the moment she had entered the forest until now, she hadn’t sensed any of these people’s presence.
Wu Xingyue, who knew her master well, naturally noticed her reaction but offered no explanation.
“Elder Qiu Yue!” The disciples of the Nine Palaces Sect bowed in unison.
Without wasting words, Wu Xingyue waved her hand, and the disciples immediately stepped forward, drawing their magical artifacts.
Tang Jing hadn’t expected them to attack without hesitation. She quickly raised her defenses and called to Wen Mingyu, “Find a place to hide!”
Wen Mingyu glanced around, there was nowhere to hide, nowhere to flee. Stamping her foot in frustration, she cried, “Master, there’s nowhere to hide!”
Tang Jing spared a glance in her direction and frowned. From then on, she tried to stay close to her disciple while fighting.
Wu Xingyue, standing to the side with her arms crossed, frowned in displeasure at the situation and finally joined the fray.
“Master, be careful!” Wen Mingyu had been keeping an eye on the woman in the red wedding dress, wary of a sneak attack. Sure enough, the woman moved straight toward her master. How could she not panic? Without thinking, she screamed a warning.
Tang Jing was already struggling to keep up with the onslaught. At the sound of her disciple’s cry, her movements faltered for just a moment and a sword struck her back.
As she repelled the two attackers in front of her and turned, she heard the voice of the woman in red. “Palace Master Lingyu, your precious disciple is in my hands.”
Everyone around them stopped fighting and took a few steps back, clearing the center.
Wen Mingyu now had a sword pressed against her neck, its wielder standing right behind her. At such close range, she could smell the faint, familiar fragrance on the other person, though she couldn’t quite place it.
But she quickly snapped back to reality and ground out through clenched teeth, “You’re despicable.”
She had seen the woman’s sword aimed at her master, only for her to suddenly pivot and appear behind her in the blink of an eye leading to this predicament.
“Aren’t we of the Nine Palaces Sect always called despicable by your righteous sects?” Wu Xingyue replied with a faint smile.
The surrounding disciples burst into laughter, as if they had just heard the funniest joke in the world.
Wen Mingyu’s face flushed red with anger.
Tang Jing glanced at her threatened disciple before turning her gaze to the woman behind her. “What do you want?”
“To marry,” Wu Xingyue declared, as if she had planned this for a long time. “If you marry me, I’ll let your disciple go.”
Tang Jing’s grip on her sword tightened.
“Impossible!” Wen Mingyu, despite the sword at her throat, was the first to protest. “My master would never marry you! Give up on this delusion, you demoness! If you have any guts, let me go, and I’ll fight you one-on-one!”
Wu Xingyue smirked, thoroughly amused. “But what if I insist on making your master marry me?”
Wen Mingyu was so furious she nearly forgot about the sharp blade at her neck. “Demoness!” she spat. “If you have the nerve, just kill me!”
“You think I wouldn’t dare?” With a slight increase in pressure from Wu Xingyue’s hand, a thin cut appeared on Wen Mingyu’s neck, blood slowly trickling down.
“Wait.” Tang Jing quickly interjected, “Let her go.”
Seeing her so anxious, Wu Xingyue truly wanted to disregard everything and kill Wen Mingyu. But she couldn’t. If she truly exerted force with her sword, the distance between her and her master would only grow wider.
Yet, what could she do? She really wanted to slice through that fragile neck then her master’s gaze would finally fall upon her.
Hidden beneath the red bridal veil, Tang Jing couldn’t see the obsessive look in those eyes.
Even so, Tang Jing could sense the madness emanating from this Elder Qiu Yue. If provoked, she would truly harm her disciple.
“Has Palace Master Lingyu made her decision?” Wu Xingyue pressed her.
Surveying the surrounding members of the Nine Palaces Sect, Tang Jing realized she and her disciple had fallen into a trap they had long laid.
The question was whether this trap had been set specifically for them or if it had been lying in wait, ready to ensnare anyone who stumbled in.
Wen Mingyu was knocked unconscious and left in the woods, while Tang Jing was forcibly taken away by the Nine Palaces Sect.
Blindfolded, she had no idea where they were taking her.
The members of the Nine Palaces Sect had long heard of Palace Master Lingyu’s reputation. Now, seeing how easily Elder Qiu Yue had captured her, they couldn’t help but entertain other thoughts.
Wu Xingyue had long since removed her red bridal veil. Noticing the gazes of her subordinates, she swept a murderous glare over them, freezing their breaths in fear. Only when she looked away did they dare to breathe again.
Exchanging furtive glances, they quickly fell into line.
Elder Qiu Yue was usually amiable, but when she acted, she was ruthless leaving her victims in agony, unable to live or die.
Remembering the gruesome fates of those who had once disrespected Elder Qiu Yue, their faces paled, and they slowed their steps, hanging back to avoid drawing her attention.
Tang Jing was led into a courtyard and across the threshold into a room. “Palace Master Lingyu, we shall wed tonight,” Wu Xingyue declared, reaching to undo her robes.
Tang Jing grabbed her hand.
Wu Xingyue’s fingers trembled, a flush creeping up her cheeks. The warmth from her master’s palm sent a scarlet hue to the tips of her ears.
Emboldened by the fact that no one could see, she maintained a steady tone. “Palace Master Lingyu, what is the meaning of this?”
Behind the blindfold, Tang Jing’s eyes flickered with rare tension and unease, though impatience dominated. Her thin lips, pressed tightly together the entire journey, parted to utter a hoarse reply, “I’ll do it myself.”
Wu Xingyue looked up at her, hesitated briefly, then relented but with a condition. “You must not remove the blindfold.”
Tang Jing turned away without another word.
Wu Xingyue wasn’t angered. The mere thought of her master bowing to her in marriage that night filled her with such joy that she could overlook her master’s indifference now.
Once the door closed, Tang Jing tore off the blindfold, disregarding the red-clad woman’s earlier command.
She glanced around, finding the room utterly ordinary.
Then she looked down at the bridal gown in her arms and noticed the embroidery matched that of the woman in red.
She didn’t change into the wedding dress immediately. Instead, she asked the system where Senior Shi Wanqing was.
[System: Search complete. Target is currently outside the door.]
Hearing this, Tang Jing raised her eyebrows, pleasantly surprised. She truly hadn’t expected to meet her senior so soon.
Afraid of making a mistake, she carefully asked again, “Is it Wu Xingyue?”
She knew the woman in the red wedding dress was Wu Xingyue.
[System: Yes.]
With the confirmation, Tang Jing grew even happier, looking at the wedding dress in her arms with joy. Just the thought of her senior forcing her into marriage made the corners of her lips curl uncontrollably.
Though she knew the other was just following the script, she was still delighted after all, no matter what, it was the two of them getting married.
Once she came to this realization, she quickly changed into the wedding attire. As she was about to cover her head with the red veil, she remembered she hadn’t yet tied the blindfold over her eyes. After putting it on, she finally draped the red veil over her head.
The moment she finished, the door was pushed open from the outside, and someone stepped in.
